@Sabian Vorachev the jets 1.0 moved to Phoenix and currently are the Arizona coyotes. The thrashers were a brand new expansion franchise that failed in the market and was moved to Winnipeg, becoming the jets 2.o.
Ray Ferraro ripping in to this play, is the best commentary I've ever heard on an NHL broadcast. I highly recommend listening to it if you haven't already.
If Stefan Scored we would get Patrick Kane and he would cost us McDavid,Draisaitl and our other good first round picks but we would have Patrick Kane soo ya also its hella funny to see him miss the empty net
Fun fact: After Stefan missed the net another Czech player Ales Hemsky scored for the Oilers to tie the game, Hemsky would later spend his final NHL years in Dallas. The Stars still won the game in overtime.
I feel bad for dipietro. I remember watching him in 06-07 when I just started getting into hockey and he looked really good. Probably would’ve become Vezina caliber one day before the concussions started. Honestly I have more sympathy now for Stefan knowing about his own concussion issues. It’s too bad...
I agree, to make it even more hurtful, fromwhat I hear he was well known as a a super hard working and deticated guy and was chiseled like a Greek sculpture ( according to past teammates) so it’s sad to see how his career ended up. He did however bite off a little more than he could chew when he fought Johnson. But either way seemed like a great guy.
DiPietro wasn't an out and out bust like Stefan. He had his moments and like you said around 2006 it seemed like he turned a corner in his career before injuries caught up to him. Stefan and Yakupov were busts by amy measure. At best either of them were barely 3rd line players on some terrible teams. DiPietro was an All-Star once and you can make a great argument on him making a few more.
Legendary commentary at the time. "That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Patrick Stefan, you should be ashamed of what you just did. That does not belong in the National Hockey League." There's more but that's the famous bit. I do feel bad for the dude man. Even now that get's airtime on a regular basis.
"He had the highest of expectations while his body kept breaking down on him so he couldn't reach them" That is exactly how my life feels. But at least he got into the NHL, many wont make it that far.
The narrator says that instead of 'shooting' the puck in the empty net, he was going to casually back-hand the puck in the net. Any coach will tell you, if you have an empty net, you skate it all the way into the net. You don't shoot it from afar. Bad luck for Stefan but he was doing what his coaches had told him...
2:38 on the right is Pavel Brendl, another huge bust from that draft (there's plenty). He tore up the WHL for a couple years, although he literally played no defense, and cherry picked most of the time. Never played a full NHL season. Would be a good subject for a video.
I used to follow hockey a lot more closely, and in those years I saw so many poorly managed bottom-feeder teams rush their new talent to the NHL. Not every first overall pick is a Crosby or Ovechkin, ready to step in right away. Let the young guys keep playing in the juniors, building their confidence and getting them hungry for the show. Otherwise 9/10 times they just end up chronically injured and under performing. So much lost potential.
To be fair I feel really bad for Stefan because his career a lot of injuries, and whenever you google your named a blooper comes up. I mean the poor guy had a hip replacement at age 38, and if that doesn’t explain why he was bust I don’t know what does.
To be fair that was the weakest draft in NHL history. Two first round picks that year went for one almost any other year. Idk where you got your information, but Burke said he was able to make a bunch of moves because of the weak class and lack of interest by the other teams.
I was neighbors with his nephew always went to his mansion in Laguna and his family is awesome, playing street hockey with him and me in net, he was the best in my eyes. He was ripping like 80mph shots at my street gear probably made me a better goalie
You also have to take into account that the Thrashers suffered typical expansion woes. But out of all expansion teams from the great expansion in the 90's Atlanta had only has one playoff series appearance and that was a sweep by the Rangers in 2007 (after Stefan was traded ironically) after having their best season in the entire history of the franchise - they've never made the playoff before or since and eventually were sold and moved to Winnipeg, Mantioba to become Winnipeg Jets 2.0.
Looking back at this, Stefan shouldn't totally be at fault for the empty net miss. The puck hopped over his stick in a very uncommon fashion and then he tripped trying to turn immediately.
Other notable draft busts during this era: - Alexandre Daigle (lack of motivation beyond his sophomore season) - Chris Phillips (his one-dimensional style of play was not considered fit; he became a great shutdown defenseman) - Rick DiPietro (series of knee injuries) - Alexander Svitov & Stanislav Chistov (drafted into the Russian Armed Forces shortly after the NHL Draft that notoriously wrecked their careers) - Erik Johnson (not exactly a bust by any means, but a grievous knee injury in a golfing accident) - Nail Yakupov (character & attitude issues, egregiously surfaced after Ralph Krueger was fired) - Ryan Murray (chronically injured) - Nolan Patrick (concussions & chronic migraines)

Totally off topic. The Atlanta Thrashers won 14 games in their inaugural season. The Thrashers always struggled and never caught on in Atlanta. If they were put together using the same inter-league draft rules that Vegas enjoyed and were competitive right from day 1, would there still be a team there? Back in the day the NHL Old Boys Club of owners (think Harold Ballard in Toronto) didn't give expansion teams much oxygen and screwed themselves by letting franchises fail. Failed franchises lower the value of all NHL teams new or old. Seattle paid a hefty price for entry largely based on Vegas's success. A much better formula these days.
Rick Dipietro’s career took a nosedive when he got injured during the All-Star week-end… far from a bust IMO. The 15 years contract made him look back.
It was the announcer that made the highlight so popular, saying "Patrik Stefan you should be embarrassed for what you just did". It really wasn't that bad, more bad luck than anything. The puck just bounced over his stick at the exact wrong time. We see pucks bouncing over sticks all the time in the league. I've seen a lot worse in the NHL. Now of course it didn't help that the Oilers scored right after to tie the game lol. It's all these factors that made the highlight so popular!! Knowing his concussion history I actually feel really sorry for him.
The miss is one thing. The panic reaction is much worse. All he had to do was keep the puck in the corner with him and time would run out. Since this players go directly towards net so bad ice can’t hinder puck from going in.
Never has a blunder symbolized the epic fail of a top draft pick hockey career. Whenever a highly rated hockey player is drafted and fails now, his career gets compared to Stefan.
I find it very interesting that this guy's career went the way it did. Had he been drafted either later in the first round or later in the draft, he could have easily become a steady, contributing NHL player. The year he came in was a pretty weak draft year and he was selected first overall basically because it wasn't possible for Atlanta to get the second pick so they could take the Sedin twins and also because there just wasn't a lot of high end talent available. He wasn't scouted as a 100 point player in the first place! He was a good player but not a great player and if you look at his stats, they weren't bad at all! Sure, he wasn't a guy you could build a team around but he sure as hell would have been a top 6 on any team in the league. Too much hype is put on first round players and it's become a problem that is so serious, it's like NHL teams have a systemic problem analyzing and developing talent similarly to what MLB teams were portrayed as doing in "Money Ball". It's not reasonable or logical 99% of the time to put a label on an 18 year old kid that tells him how good he's going to be in 3-5 years and for his career. Even simple mathematics proves my case because of the simple fact that a first round pock today isn't what it was at various points in the history of the league because of the changing numbers of franchises. Anyone selected after pick number 21 today would have been a second round pick from 1979 to 1991. The reason this is important is because teams misjudge their player's abilities based on where they were drafted and this causes players to "fail" because they haven't reached predetermined and artificial expectations. It's an enormous flaw and in my opinion, the first NHL team that manages to figure it out will have a good deal of success!
Unlike Daigle Patrik Stefan was never touted as "the next Lemieux" or anything crazy, it's questionable if he would even be no. 1 draft pick if any other team would've had the choice so he never had the insane expectations worldwide like Daigle. I remember a lot of people at the time even questioned if Stefan was the best no. 1 pick. Also Daigle was a far better player than Stefan even though he was a bigger bust than Stefan based on expectations. Dipietro was never projected to be a high draft pick at all, the Isles made him one, so he shouldn't be there with Yakapov and Daigle because those two were concensus top picks.
@@nicolasgarant9124 Jack Hughes still has the shape of a teenager, barely 170 lbs. He needs to build a man's frame and add 15 to 20 lbs of muscle. To give you an idea, Crosby is 1 inch taller yet, he weight 200 lbs...
That's part of why not sending him to the wolves year 1 could have been a good idea. A lot of prospects return to the juniors to focus on putting some weight for the pros. He couldn't even compensate his struggle to score with assists since his wingers couldn't score for shit either. Far from a bust, but maybe a bit rushed. Some work in the offseason and maybe some upgrades throughout the Devils in general should help.
"Stefan steals, and he'll ice it! OR AT LEAST I THOUGHT HE WAS GONNA, UNTIL HE BLEW IT! THAT'S UNBELIEVABLE! And here come the Oilers the other way! HEMSKY IS LOOSE! HEMSKY! HE SCORES!!! *CAN YOU BELIEVE WHAT WE JUST SAW!!!*"
He absolutely is. No idea how this guy thinks Stefan is worse. Stefan went first because it was a weak draft and Brian Burke. Yakupov went first because he was legit believed to be the best player in the draft and a future star.
Its pronounced closer to Sh tef ahn not Stefen. Don't know why English speakers struggle with vowels so hard. For example Kos in Koskinen is constantly mispronounced Kas or Taras in Tarasenko is mispronounced Teras. That nitpick aside, very well done video. For future video, Jim Carey as the kids these days won't know who he is.
I enjoy your videos but I'll be honest, it comes across like you've only been watching hockey for a couple of years!! I think you were a bit harsh on him as well. The puck bounces over sticks all the time in the NHL, which you would know if you grew up watching and playing hockey, which you clearly did not!!
Stefan may have been damaged goods before being drafted. However, the real bust from the draft was Pavel Brendl...so lazy that Jeff O'Neill named his dog that!

Stefan’s empty net miss and subsequent Hemsky goal with seconds left on the clock is still one of my favourite sports moments of all time.

Well, after 1 year, Stefan is better then Jack Hughes, 2019 1st pick and Hughes had a much better team to play with...
That entire Devils offence was about as dry as the Sahara desert. Jack Hughes never had a chance.
Rick got hurt too much .
I still think Yakupov is the bigger bust between the two based on play style and career in the nhl
He absolutely is. No idea how this guy thinks Stefan is worse. Stefan went first because it was a weak draft and Brian Burke. Yakupov went first because he was legit believed to be the best player in the draft and a future star.
Puck jumped over his stick
Wow the finnish liiga not even mentioned........ sorry there was a second.....
Finally
Its pronounced closer to Sh tef ahn not Stefen. Don't know why English speakers struggle with vowels so hard.
For example Kos in Koskinen is constantly mispronounced Kas or Taras in Tarasenko is mispronounced Teras.
That nitpick aside, very well done video.
For future video, Jim Carey as the kids these days won't know who he is.
Mike Danton @ 4:04
Cool beans
I wonder what would have happened to Stefan if Atlanta had the same expansion draft rules as Vegas
Love the video but the way you pronounce Ilves made me cringe...
Hi
The way he said ilves made me sick
So basically he single handily is the reason the thrashers never became anything worth talking about . Screwed from the jump
I'm not listening to euro hockey pod cast put on by people that have never put on skates and know nothing about hockey.
He’s all good....look at Nail Yakupov, cringe.
His last name is pronounced “Stefaan”. A long a. At least get it right
whos the goofy guy to the left of mcdavid
Fake news. The puck hopped up on his stick before the net , could happen to anyone.
