  • On June 21st 2008, Jared Staal was selected in the second round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. Five years later on April 25th 2013, the youngest of four siblings would make his NHL Debut with the Carolina Hurricanes. Though he would finally get the chance to join his three older brothers in the NHL and have the opportunity to carve out an impressive career of his own, his time in the best league in the world wouldn't last as long or be quite as successful as his siblings...
This is the story of the other Staal brother!

There's only one other time that I can think of when three brothers played on the same line in the NHL. During the 1940s, Doug, Max, and Reg Bentley from Delisle, Saskatchewan briefly played together on a line with Chicago. Reg would be the one who would play the majority of his career in the minors, while Max would be the most successful of the three, winning the Hart Trophy once and the scoring championship twice, while going on to win three Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs.

@Brian Ullrich Marc Staal did not play in that game actually. He was still out with the eye injury. He suffered that injury on 3/5/13 against the Flyers at the Garden and it was more or less a season ending injury. I say more or less because he did come back for game 3 against the Capitals on 5/6/13, but he played so bad in that game that it was evident that he was rushed back, so he sat out the remainder of the playoffs.

Mad respect for Jared, he worked very hard no matter where he was assigned. I can understand comparing him to his brothers, it’s not necessarily fair. • @SilverzeroBreaks
    @SilverzeroBreaks 3 роки тому +77

I like your positive take on Jared Staal's story. A lot of people would see him as a bust compared to his older brothers, but that's the sad part of his story. He will always be in their shadows in terms of his pro playing career. Perhaps he will carve out a successful run as a coach instead. Not everyone is destined to be a NHL star. If you ever do another "forgotten brother" story, the Subban brothers are a good one too. Though Jordan is still an active hockey player, so it might take a bit more time to see how his career plays out.

    • @deckmonkey1459
      @deckmonkey1459 3 роки тому +6

The point stats make him look terrible but look at how many minutes a game he played. Anyone playing 12-14 minutes a game is great player. Fourth line guys might play 2-3 minutes, so he clearly had a different role other than scoring. It's really hard to live up to what his brothers did as soon as they got in the league. Eric and Jordan were were pretty much stars immediately and champions early in their careers which is the exception even for superstar, hall of fame players. He's always been in their shadow and been talked about as not being close to as talented from the time he started playing hockey, not just as a pro. The real fact is that he's lived a dream for most people, taken all of his opportunities, reached his full potential as a player and probably has no regrets. That's success.

I really like how you broke down Jared's style of play and how he differed from his brothers, as well as the positives you brought to light in his career. It's so true, he still got to play in the NHL and that is an accomplishment in itself. Even though his kind of play is duplicable with other players who might have another element to their game -- better skating, greater agility, etc. -- it's still a role worth acknowledging.

I think either myself or my brother may have actually played against Marc when we were kids, out at Norwest Arena in a hamlet called Stanley (named after the very same Lord Stanley). The arena's sign actually has it being the home of the Staal brothers. I'm not sure if they still do or not, but the family has or had a sod farm just outside Thunder Bay city limits. Also, they happen to have a cousin, Jeff Heerema, who played briefly in the league as well. He would score three goals in ten games with the Hurricanes during the 02-03 season. He would go around the AHL for a bit after that, and well as playing in the DEL, EBEL, and the EIHL before calling it a day on his career after finishing the 11-12 season in Nottingham.

Jared Staal played AAA MIDGET for the Thunderbay Kings of the Norther Lakes Hockey League, a Teir 1 AAA Midget League, not a JR. League.I would know, I played for the Sault Ste. Marie Indians in that same league.

Before you start feeling bad about Jared Staal and tell me: "oh he was picked 49th, that's not his fault..."
Here's a few players that have been picked AFTER Staal in the draft:
    Derick Stepan
    Travis Hamonic
    Marco Scandella
    Michael Stone
    Zack Smith
    Adam Henrique
    Dale Weise
And a little someone called BRADEN HOLTBY
Let's also not forget that TJ Brodie and Gustav Nyquist was selected 111th and 114th respectively too
    *mic drop*

*So? Every draft has NHL players in late picks. The later you go, the bigger the crapshoot it becomes. Datsyuk, Lundqvist, Zetterberg, etc. Majority will be misses. Kyle Beach was 11th overall and he didn't even make it to the NHL at all.*

Although Jared is not the high scoring forward like Eric and Jordan, his style of play is what puts the high scorers on the board. His style is very different and he should not be compared to his brothers. Even Marc being a strong defensemen, Jared is by himself. I don't see him being less talented, just different.

The problem with Jared's career is he plays a role that every team NEEDS to be a successful, and there's a lot more competition for those roles than the ones the other three brothers were able to carve out for themselves. Though I guess one could argue Jared was in the same position but was better able to sell Pittsburgh on his skills.
Could you imagine all 4 on the same team when they were all active in their prime? Three lines of grinding your ass purple.

Some of the most famous hockey families in the history of the NHL are:
    -Sutter
    -Staal
    -Hughes
    -Stastny
    -Subban
    -Nylander
    -Tkachuk
    -Reinhart
What’s interesting, is that there are families who had both brothers playing and now sons playing as well (Sutter and Stastny). Let me know if I missed any.

    • @AzNightmare

*Nah, they would both just say STAAL. That's what the BENN bros did when they both played in Dallas. That's what Rick Nash and Riley Nash did in Boston (they're not related). For whatever reason, only Vancouver went with H.SEDIN and D.SEDIN. They all have jersey numbers anyway, so the initial isn't really important.*

I feel bad for Jared. Think about it:
Eric is the greatest Hurricane of all time. He has 1,000 points, and is a member of the Triple Gold Club.
Jordan played 1,000 NHL games and won a Cup. He's only 33, he's still got a few years left in him.
Marc also played 1,000 NHL games.
Jared played 2 games only because Jordan and Eric lobbyed for him to be called up and the games were meaningless.
