Would it work if I just let the ice thaw for like 48hours and clear the drain plug so I wouldn't have to remove all the freezer parts

I just finished and hope this does the trick. The grommet was all gummed up just like you said. I cleaned the Grommet good and only took out one of the shelves and poured real hot water into the back portion of the freezer. At first it just kept over flowing and draining to the bottom. Then it thawed I guess because it started flowing down the drain. Thank you so much for the step by step assistance!!

Great video, thank you. You did a thorough job of explaining. I can't understand why Whirlpool and others make it so difficult to clean and repair their products. Greed? Its easier to get a new one than go thru all that? There must be a better way to design these. Keep it simple without the need for a drill.

With my similar Whirlpool WRF535, one of the annoying habits is that Ice can spill behind or fall through the slotted trays and accumulate on the bottom of the freezer. Eventually this interferes with the door closing completely, causing frost to build up. Thanks for the tips on how to get the door and bottom tray off quickly. Easy!

For anyone who finds this video the rubber grommet has been replaced by a plastic tube you can find at any parts place. You really need to clear out all of that ice and ensure the drain is free of ice before you replace everything. That upper rack is tricky to remove as well. They have a separate video on it.

My refrigerator was only 4 months old when this happened and the ice was 2" thick in the bottom of the freezer. I took off the little black rubber drain tip and left it off, otherwise it would just happen again. That was Sept 2017, have never had a problem since. That was 5 1/2 years ago. Works fine without that piece.

The only difference is that I don't have the ice maker in the freezer. The valve in the back was filled with dust and what looked like hair.

If you do not want to open all the freezer section parts then just turn off the freezer section and close freezer for 3 to 6 hours and most probably all ice will melt and drain out. Clean drain first from back.

BTW, if you put a paper towel on the bottom (not blocking anything) if it leaks/freezes again, you can lift the sheets out easier. Also, poor air circulation (overpacking the fridge or freezer) will also cause it to freeze up, then your fridge temp will increase. Many think their refrigerators are broken, when in fact, it's a simple fix. Not a fan of bottom mounts.

Seems the crappy engineers designed the floor of the freezer as the evaporator tray..... forgot it was in the freezer... lol. What a Fracked up design this is. I hope this fixes my problem any way.

Couldn’t you just unplug it for a few days to fully defrost all of the ice build up?

The rubber valve is clogged and dirty you need to remove it and clean. The drain is full of ice too that will take many days for the ice to become water.
You need to do exactly what he told for good result and you will not do it again less than one year after.

How about telling the people in the background to be quiet while you're taping?

This is the problem with appliances today: poorly made. There is no reason a consumer should ever have this problem but due to poor design, too-small parts, etc., it is unfortunately a common problem. I just purchased my first bottom freezer fridge and in 4 weeks, had a huge mess in the freezer, frozen stalagtites of ice everywhere. I was not about to "repair" a brand new fridge. They were happy to bring another of the same model, since I've been a good customer, and if this one does the same thing, it's going out the door also. Have had wash machine issues also, due to the crappy new electronics and other parts. Now on my 5th washer in 20 yr, absolutely ridiculous. Transmission went out on one model, after only 6 yr of just me using it. Junk! And don't go by the "back in the day" brand names; they've all sold out to other people and are not the reliable appliances of yore.

What a Fracked up design. How did Whirlpool's engineers ok this for production? Why is it not covered in the owner's manual, at least what to put into the drain on a regular basis to keep it clear? Why not have it removable from the back where the drain is? Make it more accessible would be common sense. I had mine defrosted about 2 1/2 days once to try to stop my fridge from peeing on the floor, and it still didn't work. The Rubber of that valve that is supposed to drain the water to the evaporator tray is crappy and deteriorating. There has to be a better design.
I knew Whirlpool was crap, but now I'll make certain to never buy another.

They have since made an upgraded p-trap design to address the problem

@@gking854 Would be nice if Whirlpool would have a step-by-step instruction posted on their website at least.... Thanks for the update.
