If you’ve struggled to play hihat barks like these that you’re hearing right now [referring to b-roll] and you’re wanting to be able to spontaneously incorporate these at will into whatever grooves you like… Then today’s lesson is for you!
Here’s the catch that may be YOUR holdup: You’ve gotta train your left hand to play barks in time with your kick drum - Otherwise this whole thing will always be a struggle.
But don’t worry, because today I’ll teach you “The Triplet Bark Exercise” that will have you nailing hihat barks, able to create your own funky grooves. YOU CAN DO THIS!
I believe that ANYONE can learn the drums, and I believe you’re far more capable of becoming a great drummer than you think you are. Don’t sell yourself short! SUBSCRIBE for more Non Glamorous videos that get straight to the point of solving drumming frustration. Stay Non Glamorous, Everyone!

Stephen, what I love about your teaching is obviously your non glamorous approach, but above all your ability to answer all the questions that arise in my mind while watching your videos, the very moment they do! That means you really know how to take the viewer's/student's seat.
It's so incredibly helpful to find something this focussed and detailed. This is exactly how I need to be instructed. I find myself chomping at the bit to get behind my kit and try out all your advice. I've been playing a month now, and I haven't missed a day's practise. You are so inspiring and helpful, I'm very grateful to have found you on UA-cam!! Today I managed to play the groove on day 16 of your guide, which was so tricky for me with the constant left foot chicks. I honestly love this journey I've started at 62! Thank you!
Very helpful ! I'm a big Matt Cameron fan and he tends to add a lot of barks throughout his playing. Will be working on this.
the verse in War Pigs is the first hi hat bark that comes to mind for me
Brilliant lesson - thank you!
☮️🙏🥁🎵
Learning Mr. Brightside right now. Great timing!
Non-glamorous drummer adapt, overcome, improvise.... a board on an old drum hoop as a laptop shelf. This is one of the things I like about your videos.
Good stuff…thanks!
hi Steven,
My name is Ivan. I am just starting my drumming journey. Wanted to thank you for the lessons. I practiced hihat barks today, and it was great. Keep doing the great work you do! 👍🥁
Great lesson I’m thinking the Crunge? Will definitely be working on this thanks. Wishing you a Glamorous New Year
Always a needed, right on time lesson ,on the worship drummer journey
I hear THAT!
Nah! I won't bother, you just too much fun to watch. 1 and ah, 2 and ah, GO! LOL! Appreciate you Stephen. This will be epic once I figure out the technique.
Great vid and can’t wait to get a real hihat+stand to use with my e kit
It's a great upgrade. And you don't have to lay out hundreds for a Roland VH. I've had good luck with a $60 Chinese controller and the stock HH cymbal from my old TD-11.
A good song to practice regular barks might be "Swing Town" by the Steve Miller Band😊
What? No house slippers?! Ha, just kidding. This is the first time I’ve seen shoes in one of your videos! Always good information though, thanks!
How'd you know I needed this rn??? Lol
It’s so funny I’ve been working on this exact thing a lot lately as well
Take the money and run. Steve Miller
Live Wire - Motley Crue. Tommy does great work on the hats. Barks. Chicks. They even solo it. Matt Cameron on Outshined too.
Tom Sawyer by Rush comes to mind.
That's the first song that came to me also! I'm way far from being able to play the whole song, but running the main groove is great practice for this.
Steve Gadd on steely dan's AjA
Charlie Watts plays those barks all the time, sounds really great but isn't easy to copy. Pretty much any more recent Rolling Stones song. Miss You has a lot of good hi-hat work. Also, She's So Cold. Aerosmith, Walk This Way. Led Zep - Fools In the Rain. Bill Withers - Use Me. Welcome To Wherever You Are - INXS. You can google more yourself :) Half those songs I never heard...
Hmm 🤔, so that’s what it’s called. I personally feel that tha quality of tha spring that lifts back up yur hi-hat pedal plays a major roll on how hard it is to play “barks” on tha hats. I play heel down and have to put a lot of effort into keeping my hats completely closed bkuz of tha unusually stiff spring in my hi-hat stand which ruins my barks technique.
🤩👌
Patience Danielson
Why left hand?
Bark, is that what it's called now?
Jeez so that's what they're called, I've been wondering what those funky things on Geek USA were called for years. I suppose I could've just asked, but where's the fun it that.
Johnny the fox (Thin lizzy)
Actually, I was trying to do these barks in Dream Theater's The Count of Tuscany but couldn't manage to do it successfully.
I will practice your method. Let's see the result. 😊
20 mins lol man
Hillsong, ugh
Too much intro, precaution or weak points. Would be better to use precious seconds for details. Such as Kick on Left stick alternate with Kick with Right Hihat. Or counting.
I went to your channel to find an example of your feedback. Oh wait, you don’t make any videos! Tisk, tisk.
yeah that explanation is a lil incomprehensible
You talk too much we have a limited time to practice and learn. This is why bc I don't listen to your channel despite all the interesting subjects
You are not a drummer
