the sopranos-tony between life and death

- this is a great scene of the episode called mayham(s6e03).while tony lies in his bed at hospital, his soul in a parallel universe is fighting for survival.this is the final scene of this fight, where tony is in a crossroad.in this symbolic scene the living and the dead are calling him and he has to choose a side....
Meadow was always his guardian angel. She was why that rat didn't kill him outside his motel room. Her voice prevented him from walking into death. She wasn't there when the man came out of the bathroom in the diner. She was just a moment too late.
Or what if she showed up right on time and Tony actually lived?
That’s if you believe the theory that Tony was killed in the final scene. There’s no evidence provided to prove that.
I read somewhere else that when Tony made that huge bet on the horse named “Meadow Gold” and the horse ended up losing by a nose, that it was foreshadowing about the series finale when Meadow arriving a few seconds too late to see Tony’s killer and warn him. Thought it was a neat theory.
@@BlueCollarHero1 what evidence do you have to support that Tony was killed in the series finale?
@@davedaddy101 I wouldn’t say there is direct evidence. I would say there is enough to draw a conclusion that Tony was killed. Every time the door to the diner opened, Tony looked up and saw his family walk in. When Meadow walks in,, the screen turns black.
There were some suspicious characters in the diner. There was a group of Boy Scouts in the diner (same when Bobby was killed). Speaking of Bobby, they talked about death when he and Tony were on the lake. “You probably don’t see it coming” Bobby said. This a long shot, but when Christopher was waking from his coma he kept mentioning 3 o’clock. That was the position of the bathroom where the guy potentially went to the bathroom to get the gun to kill Tony, Godfather style. The Godfather was Tony’s favorite movie.
It’s a fascinating and clever ending for this show. Heck, it’s still being discussed today.
Do you have evidence he lived?
I always start tearing up when Tony starts hearing Meadow's voice as a little girl.
Same here. Very heartfelt
Weirdo
Yeah hit me hard
Always think of my kids during that moment. Gets me everytime
Imo i thought it was a lil Corny...
I like how they had James Gandolfini and Steve Buscemi drop the hard North Jersey accents and use their normal speaking voices.
Yes that was cool
I’m never noticed that till you said.
@John Smith it was a dream, how’s that breaking character?
@John Smith first time he was dreaming while in an induced coma. Probably not gonna be dreaming his typical dreams
@John Smith sorry about my sloppy response earlier, I was a bit distracted with family stuff; i edited it since it was completely unintelligible
but yeah to each their own. i liked it but i understand what you’re saying
This show is so damn good at capturing the eerie quality of dreams. The fearsome nature of the "man" who greets tony, the voices in the wind, the way tony can't quite see the people in the house that they call his family. I also liked the season 5 dream with the coach.
Ben L I'm impressed by something I said ( about to say ) above ?
This isnt @DREAM this is @N(EAR)D(EA((R=18=666))TH)E(XPERIENCE)
I can't think of any other show I've seen that is able to portray a dream sequence in the same way as I experience it in my head at night.
It's true, no series has ever done dreamscapes with the realism of Sopranos, funny cos it's a paradox, dreams/reality.
The man was his cousin who he killed, which adds an extra layer to the death dream
They did this so well. It's a really upsetting scene.
Yeah, every time.
I got a bit of a Shining vibe from this scene. A bunch of doomed souls haunting a building waiting for someone from their past lives to return for eternity.
Upsetting?!?...
The we love daddy part.. feel sorry for him... tbh... and the shining yes defo.. jeez

Damn, 2013 comment.
2022 now, and Paulie Walnuts, Tony Sirico is gone too. Shah of Iran, Butchie, Carm's dad, Jinny Sac, Vin Mackenzian.
A lot of other people who entertained us are gone prematurely - James Horner, Anton Yelchin, Bill Paxton, Robin Williams, Ph. Seymour Hoffman, Ray Liotta, Norm McDonald, Paul Walker. Many more.
Entertainment took a heavy hit during the last decade.
@Tableú Awww, bless your heart. Obviously, you're going through something right now. I hope they find some meds that work for you and things get better.
@Tableú That doesn't sound so bad. Have you ever been stuck at a Holiday Inn Express in Cleveland on a Tuesday night?

@Tableú I didn't ask you to cite supernatural literature. Do that again, and I will cite some of my own. What lake of fire? Where is it physically located?
I imagine Kevin Finnerty was who Tony would have been if he had a loving mother and had he not followed his father into the mob. Also when he says "I don't want to." My heart absolutely breaks.... he sounds so vulnerable with a childlike innocence. Fantastic acting.
Kevin Finnerty is definitely someone Tony wanted to be deep down inside
His moral struggles of running the mob and hurting people, of hurting his family and friends
Kevin Finnerty, slightly flawed, but is a good person, who cares deeply about his family and not doing wrong to other people
Fantastic writing, first and foremost
Kevin finnerty is supposed to be a representation of his sinister mobster side and the confused salesman is supposed to be the version of tony that went the straight arrow route instead of becoming a mob boss...its like his football coach said in tonys dreams ....." U picked the easy way out."
His “whole life” is in the briefcase, that he can’t let go. Meadow is his constant guardian, keeping him from death. What a superbly written episode , and another gem in the series.
I love the use of this dark, faceless woman that constantly haunts Tony's dreams. I feel like it's the idea of this idealized woman, this mother figure, this lover, whom he can never prove himself too. Whom he can never please. It's reflected in every woman that Tony loves and dates. All his goomaras, his daughter, his mother etc.
even if this was 10 years ago, pretty sure somebody said if you pause at that frame the face is the one a demon would have. that's at least what i kinda see as well

This was a strangely unsettling scene. I just think it was Tony B acting so cordial and so proper and Tony S not noticing who he was. Also the aura around the house felt very evil, all those lights but the figure in the doorway is almost pitch black and the wind blowing with the the little girls voice. It didn’t even feel like what purgatory would be, it felt like what hell would be. the devil is the king of lies and deception, so of course he’s guna make hell look warm and inviting.
Tony made a living of walking people into rooms they never left again
Or, perhaps the sins of the living don't count for much in the land of the dead.
I think we all see what we want to see in this scene.
As soon as I heard the mariachi music I was like “.....ain’t this guy Italian??”
@@MomMom4Cubs nah, he’s right. That lady was pitch black and there was literally mariachi music playing instead of classic Italian hits they’re used to playing at their own funerals and stuff. It felt way too eerie to come off the way you portray it to be. Remember Tony was positive he was going to hell which is why his humanity slowly corroded throughout the seasons and was a sociopathic maniac by S6. If he let go of that suit case it was game over for him.

19 deaths he was going to hell
Maybe, or there's no hell and it's just Tony's subconscious and he was just headed to complete oblivion, but yes "Blundetto" definitely had the vibe of politely insisting that Tony cease to exist.
The way he tells him, "You need to let go.." with a hint of contempt is foreboding.
Note to self: dont give steve buschemi the brief case
But DO accept the egg from Danny Devito.
at 1:54 when tony says his whole life is in the suitcase, you see Tony B entity staring at the suitcase like its a tasty meal. then tries to lure him to death. Very creepy.
That looks to me like a regular look 👀
if you listen, tony spoke in past tense. 'I lost my _real_ briefcase, my whole life _was_ in it' implies that he doesnt have his life with him in that moment
i think you’re reading too far into it
That was a demon posing as someone familiar to Tony. Luring him in to hell
Exactly
“I always liked you. You were always the best of them Lloyd. The best God damn bartender from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine or Portland, Oregon for that matter”
And if you look very closely at the lady standing on the porch (his mother) her face resembles a rotted dead corpse.
For some reason the silhouetted people in the windows just creep me out.

The Mexican music is that made this scene what it is.. the song is called “la Féria de las Flores” typically a song played as the body is being lowered into the ground...

And I've been through some things. Especially considering they wouldn't let us see him the entire time he was sick. It's like a sudden death that's extended if that means anything. I had to get my last words over the phone as I couldn't get there in time when he started to let go. I'll feel like I'll never be the same. We were very close. I wish you nothing but the best. Sorry for your loss
Major condolences. Been there and done it. Losing a parent, regardless of the child's age is brutal. The only thing that scares the shit out of about death is leaving the ones who love you behind.

The way he says “you can’t bring business in there” is an important line. Business in the sense of “unfinished business”. All the messiness and loose ends of life we leave behind. I imagine the moment before you die you probably think for maybe just a split second all of the things you never did, tried or finished. All the things you never corrected and all the people you said you’d reconcile with but never did. This dream is basically Tony deciding weather or not to just accept all the things he left unfinished by giving up the briefcase of life. It’s all those loose ends with his dysfunctional family, all the chaos that would ensue in the underworld if he died and all the people that count on a man so powerful...and of course all the stress and turmoil that go with it. Or choosing to just “let go” and embrace the release and nothingness of death. But right at the last minute he somehow hears his family’s call and realizes that maybe life is still worth living on some level. As tempting as it is to just “let go” of such a chaotic, botched existence, maybe the connection of family makes it all worth returning to.
It was his soul
That’s one way to see it and I liked it. However, I see it as If the case was his life and he was holding onto it. Letting the case go and getting in the house was accepting death.
sinners fear the lake of fire, thats why they cant let go of their miserable life and cry for redemption
@@Neko.Virtual go suck christ's cock somewhere else.
Life is worth it. Maybe Tony didn't got what would've made him a well-rounded human, adept at all or most factors of life. However, he still got something. He still got a life. What he may or may not have realised -since I didn't watched the show I'm unsure- is that it could've been much worse.
Example: Livia could've really become a murderous sociopath and kill her own son in his young age.
What I need the one reading this comment to understand is that while we may not always get what we wanted in life, it could've been much worse. You could've been not here on this earth while you complain that you didn't got what you believe, would've set everything right. Sure, do complain, do criticise but also realise that things might have never begun instead of a botched or innately flawed and rigged beginning and a difficult childhood and onwards.
Yeah. Briefcase obviously is the soul. "My whole life is in there".
Really? I didn't see it as that. I saw it as his life before he became apart of the mafia, he has his whole life ahead of him and gave it all up to become apart of the mafia and he is now entering hell
I see it as his "baggage" more specifically - all of Tony's attachments to his mortal life that he will leave behind upon death.
Maybe grasping at straws but in pulp fiction its widely accepted that Marcellus Wallis’ soul is in the brief case. Maybe the idea was used here in this scene.
It was his soul. Thats why he said he lost his real one. He lost his soul when he joined the mob

Probably one of the most metaphoric scenes in the history of Hollywood. The writers put so much emotion and human relation into the scenes in this show. Absolutely Breathtaking!
It’s not Hollywood it’s made completely in ny/ nj but I get what you’re saying
Listening to meadow calling his name and it being the only thing to call him back from the brink is such an emotional gut shot. Since having kids it makes me tear up. Incredible scene
Shamefully,...i barely got around to binging Sopranos during this quarantine. This was one of my favorite scenes. It had me teary-eyed, especially when he heard Meadows voice as a little girl telling him not to leave. Well done.
My father had a very near death experience in the hospital not too long ago. Not from COVID but septic shock, pneumonia, and legionnaires all in one. He told me about seeing some old friend who passed, his friend who has been dead asked him, “ you want to come in!? Everyone wants to see you”. And his friend listed others who had passed. My father said “I’m not ready, I need to go back”.
I been watching sopranos again and just saw this scene and man did it have some familiar and eerie aspects to what this scene is like. And same with his story it was a brightly lit room only it was a house outside a small street the width of a hallway. Weird……
This episode is about reincarnation back into the matrix. Tony couldn’t accept his karma with Kevin finnerty (the situation with the monks) so this realm trapped him back into this world with the FLASHY house and BRIGHT LIGHTS, all a facade. The real truth is the darkness which is meadows voice. If your father went back into the light, he comes back to this false realm and the matrix trapped him with his friend who passed which took a lot of emotion out of him. However, if he goes into the dark which Tony should’ve done he would’ve found pure happiness but we would never know because everyone else goes into the light…remember if your in a coma or dead REMEMBER TO GO INTO THE DARK

This is a common story, but there's a Twilight Zone episode called The Hunt about a man who dies and almost walks into Hell but is saved by his dog. Gave me vibes of this scene.
I think I remember the one you mean. The 'door man' claimed to be an angel or something, right? And the dead guy believed it, but then his dog started barking and going apeshit? I think you were spot on. The house with the white lights was the entrance to hell and they were all waiting for Tony, to torture him for all of eternity. The suitcase represents his life. The moment he gives up that suitcase and goes inside, that’s the moment of no return. Now, David Chase leaves to each and every one of us, in our own imagination what it would be like to enter that house going into hell. That is the unsettling part. All the demons inside are waiting for Tony. All his past associates, including his mother. The 3 O’clock message from Christopher is meant to mean, the hit man coming out of the bathroom heavy with a gun, takes Tony out from Tony’s perspective, it’s 3 O’ clock from where he’s sitting. After the screen turns to black, Tony is thrown into the pit of hell for all of eternity to suffer for all his life’s indiscretions.
Sound insight. I feel the same way. Something very menacing about that party.
fuck jesus
@@davidgoulden5956It’s like Livia, his father and all the people he’s wronged/killed in his life or all the people who he strongly dislikes, are just waiting for him in there. Ready to torment him for all eternity.
This scene makes me cry. Its a sad day. Strength be with his wife, children
This particular scene makes me cry.
This episode and the previous one destroyed me. I've never had a show sum up some of my feelings this way before.
I’ve never cried from TV or movies but this did almost do something to me
Yet ANOTHER example of why this show is the greatest of all time
This scene always creeped me out. The way you can see people but you don’t see one face, a voice coming from the woods, it just always left me feeling uneasy for some reason.
I always Buscemi was playing the devil here. He was friendly kind and courteous "You can't take any business with you" I liked that the suitcase represented Tony's unfinished business, his life, his kids, his wife etc. The Devil appears as a smiling friend much the way the mafia sent the killers to bump people off, they came with smiles on their faces. When Tony looks as he tires to take the briefcase he knows this is no friend to me, that house that white light doesn't lead to heaven. I think Tony lived the rest of his life knowing when his time came he was going to hell, despite what he once thought. He always imagined he was deep down a good guy or not as bad as people like Ralphie, however they were all waiting for him on the other side in Hell. Thank god David Chase was not afraid to play around with these concepts and ideas. The ending of Many Saints when Christopher narrates form beyond the grave and it comes full circle as Tony looks into the coffin, he always said to Adrianna he was going to hell for Tony. Then we here him say "That's the guy my uncle Tony. That's the guy I went to hell for" beautifully, tragically, perfect ending.
As if there's anything poetic or romantic about actually going to hell.
@@spencerfrankclayton4348Check out this guy Dante Alighieri
"False apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness." - 2 Corinthians 11: 13-15
The big and spacious building is hell.
Livia at the door is the most unsettling thing about this brilliant scene.
It was brilliant, when he said “everyone is in there”. So his dad and everyone he killed and he knew in his mob life who died were waiting for him in purgatory, then on their way to hell they all will go. And what makes it so brilliant is Livia at the door of the purgatory, waiting for him she’s going to hell with them too.
@@tkuvma2796 you don't go to hell from purgatory.
@@TheJkuyYou can. Purgatory I believe, at least in Catholicism, is a state in which one is awaiting judgement from God to Heaven or Hell. It’s for people God doesn’t call up for judgement immediately, he’s still thinking about it.
@@Wadiyatalkinabeet_ no, purgatory in Catholicism is the state where the soul is purified in order to enter heaven. Whoever is in purgatory has already been saved and can no longer be condemned.
@@tkuvma2796I always thought it was a contrast- his daughter was trying to bring him back while his mother was waiting to take him to hell (chilling)
The Twilight Zone episode "A Stop at Whilloughby" .***spoiler*** had a character finally letting go of his briefcase (business) and meeting his ultimate demise. Thought that was pretty interesting after watching this episode.
I just had to watch the episode after your comment Rod Serling was a genius I wonder what he could have done with CGI but your right on the money the similarity is obvious but I wonder if kevin finnerty would have liked willoughby
Whether they intended to or not, I really think this scene perfectly capture a part of our psyche that is different for everyone but similar in format. Tony’s favorite place, his uncles country house where he was arguably the happiest (as a child, like most of us), filled with family during a festive party. I don’t know if anyone else feels like this, but I definitely have an idealized version of some sort of event that happened when I was a kid in a big old house like this, and I’m sure if I’m ever near death that’s probably what I’ll picture too.
Not necessarily. He is in purgatory and experiencing a completely separate existence. It's metaphorical, if he joins the dead members of his actual earthly family in the stately house, he will supposedly die. If he rejects them and walks away he clings to his identity as Tony Soprano and lives!! This is my favourite episode EVER.
Scenes like this tells how sopranos was far far better than breaking bad and all those shows
Breaking Bad can’t hold a candle to The Sopranos. All respect to Vince Gilligan, Chase is just better.
This show man…Absolute masterpiece. Greatest scene on the whole show. Breaking Bad can’t hold a candle to this.
I agree... watched all of BB, but after watching Sopranos I realized how hyped up BB was. Memorable scenes in BB are far and few.
@@spuriusscapula4829 must've been on your phone then if memorable BB scenes are "far and few"
I was in a motorcycle accident when I was 19 years old. Britt Ekland was on the TV in the hospital room + brought me out of a 12 hour coma.
Cried like a baby in this scene, one of the most oddly emotional scenes I've ever seen. I think it was the little girls' voice that triggered my emotions
One of the most touching scenes of the Sopranos
This is one of my favourite scenes of all time. It makes me emotional every-time I watch it.
because he is dead. this scene suggest that if tony go ahead, he will be dead too. but he want to stay. tony dont want to die.
Also, anyone pick up on the fact that the house KIND of looks like a fancier version of the house on Uncle Pat's farm where Tony killed Tony B?
Nucky and Tony Soprano. Two amazing actors. God, this show was amazing.
This scene gives me chills
This made me tear up seriously...... i miss this show, and James. R.I.P 🌹
The “ daddy? Don’t go daddy ! “ gets me every time
James and Steve are master actors. This dream scene itself could be another drama series, or movie entirely away from The Sopranos. They act totally different characters, accents and mannerisms so convincingly in this dream from who they really are as Tony S and his cousin Tony B.
Meadow being there when he sees the light and comes back. Meadow coming through the diner door before he sees darkness. Sad as hell 🥲
One of the best scenes from one of the best TV shows EVER made !! 👏👏👏
My favorite comment on this video is, "What makes you think that was heaven?"
This is honestly my favorite scene in the whole show. Its so subtlety unsettling and eeiry. Even knowing how its going to go you feel that spooky anxiety of something unknown Tony is walking towards
Breaking bad's ozymandias has always taken the hype as being the greatest TV episode but still nothing compared to tony's coma dream sequences.
“Ozymandias” can’t hold a candle to “Join The Club”
This show was extremely good and I felt that a part of me died when the show ended, however absurd it sounds. The whole dream scene is incredibly realistic and David chase is a true mastermind. Will there ever be another Gandolfini ? I doubt.
Agreed!! It's not absurd at all... I think it hits harder because Gandolfini has passed.
Reminds me of Tupac lyrics: "There will never be another me an' no matter what they do
There will never be another you"
