- Plant based oils of all kinds are an intricate part of our natural hair's health and regimen! Whether it be coconut, olive, almond, or grapeseed - there are tons of options out there regardless of if you're looking for a moisturizing oil or a sealing one.
But even with how popular oil usage is for our curls, there can still be some confusion on the difference between moisturizing oils and sealing oils, how to tell which one you're dealing with just from reading the label, and why oil even works for our hair in the first place.
That's why this video answering ALL of these questions and more was created, so wonder no more - let's get right to it!
AND I'd like to give a very special shoutout and thank you to the producer and singer of my new jingle - @destinystonemusic ! As an older natural. I want to first say how proud I am of you. This was a wonderful teaching video. You did a great job and I learned so much. Please keep your channel going.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! :)
to anybody wondering the "moisturizing oils" are avocado, extra virgin olive and coconut. these are the only ones i know of and think there are unless i'm wrong. anything else can be a sealing oil minus essential oils. castor, grapeseed, etc etc. hope that helps someone!
😂
Thank you because it helped me. I was doing it wrong before.
But oils can't be moisturizing, only things with water can be moisturizing ...oils can be penetrating oils or sealing oils
@Kesha Hunt I ain't listening to you. They call moisturizing for a reason.
@@keshahunt1476right water is what moisturizes your hair!
Serving us some science. Very well explained, thank you.
Right! I'm glad you thought it was well explained! That was one of my biggest concerns
Gosh! Thank you so much! I’ve been looking for such scientific video on the topic for so long!
Thank you soooo much for making this video!!!, There is so much misinformation or lack of info out there and this video was sooo informative and helpful! Thank you. Also, love your energy ♥
Totally found by accident will be subscribing. Love the way you actually try to respond to your subscribers’ questions. Not all UA-camrs do that and they are not for me. Treat your subscribers well. It’s actually respectful since this is a business for many. Great job and fantastic information. All the best!
Super great video. Very detailed and well explained. Thank you so much 💜
Love the break down! Great video. Thank you!
Wow what a well planned, edited video! So informative and well explained! :)
This was the most helpful video on oils! Thank youuuuu for explaining it this way for the science brained people.
Wow I am now smarter having watched this video as well as grateful 🙏🏻 thank you, this was great! 💕💕 on a binge now lol!
This channel is underrated. Love the details I get here.
Thank you so much, glad you enjoy the content! 💕😊
Love a Natural that knows her stuff! Yes I’d love the see more on the oils.
Sis, you did an excellent job creatively developing this content! I learned from your presentation and articulation, and I'm old enough to be your mom! Great job!
My natural hair is colored and I use alot of heat to stretch, so was so dry and damaged. Did a hot oil 2x followed by a hair mask, and it has saved my hair. Feels and looks amazing! So glad I found your channel. This saved my hair as I thought Id have to chop it off. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Amazing video, keep up the great work!
Finally I see the use of Organic Chemistry in my life 😎😎😂. I love your videos... very educative and simple to understand.
My hair moisturizing then sealant . Thanks for the understanding of the oils.
Very informative and easy to understand, thank you!!!
Your discussion on sealing vs moisturizing oils is totally enlightening for me, College Curls! You are AWESOME! You remind me of the parable…give a person a fish you feed her for a day, teach her how to fish and you feed her for a lifetime! You are an awesome teacher!
The air where I live is so dry water poured on a plate can dry in 20-30 minutes. Yikes! What is it doing to my hair? Applying coconut oil to my 2B, 2C hair was a frizz fix for just a few hours! I can’t wait to identify some sealing oils!
Wonderful video 🤩 Finally know how to read the label !! Ps keep up good work
Thank you💕 now look at oils soooo different. I will be in the grocery section rather than the hair section from now on. I found this video because over 6 months I’ve been trying different oils still on the hunt for the best one. I truly wish a lot of us had been taught this info when we were kids lol. My poor hair has been severely neglected over 20 years. Now she gets princess treatment only lol.
Yup! Need to read the ingredients.❤
Very educational. Thanks for this video💯‼️💗
absolutely awesome video! Thanks
Your videos are so helpful and they actually explain everything so thank you :))
Thank you so much for your support! 💕I’m glad they are helpful in explaining processes thoroughly - exactly what I wanted! 😊
This is an excellent video! Soooooooooo informative!! Everything I needed to know
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wish my chem teacher would teach like this 😩 you’re awesome !
this was so helpful!! thankyou ❤️🌈
I love this video so much!
Thank you! I'm learning some stuff!
This is one of the most informative natural hair channels
It truly is.
Really good explained, thank you
I just geeked out over this video!!!
I just geeked over you geeking! 😁 Thank you for all the support! 💕
this is what i need!!!! thanks
Great video I love learning thanks for posting, moisturizing oil
Thank you for taking the time to break this down. I love knowing the science behind it. I love making my DIY but now I feel more justified in adding one oil and eliminating others. Everyone has potions that work but I need to know why.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching and this awesome feedback! Yes, everyone does have their potions and you really just figure them out through trial and error, but knowing the science definitely helps have less errors in your trials lol
Love all of the informative information 😇👍👌❤️ it
Yes please make the video on the specific fatty oils in different oils😁👍🏾
Great job!!
New subscriber, even though I'm not natural lol,I just love how you teach..❤
Your videos are awesome! I love the animations
I’m so glad you enjoy them ☺️ thank you so much for watching and commenting! 💕
I want that video. This is so informative, thank you. This series is so helpful.
I will get to work on that, thank you! 😊
@@CollegeCurls Subscribed. Can't wait!
could you make a video discussing the different porosities of hair? I am a recent subscriber and you explain the science in such an easy way to understand 😅❤️

12/10 video, thank you
A well put together video needs more views
Thank you so much! Hoping one day it will, but I greatly appreciate you taking out the time to watch :)
Could you make a small list of moisturising and sealing oils? Loved the science but I’m still a little confused haha
Love that suggestion - will definitely plan that video! ☺️
yeah, examples would have added to this video. Was a great video, just need examples.
Thanks for the explanation. It definitely will help me save some coins because I won’t be buying too many oils that do the same thing.
Glad it was helpful for both information and coin saving - two of the best ways it could’ve helped in my opinion! 😊 Best of luck! 💕
Bruhhhh. I love the science 🧬 🧫🧪My mind is blown
Glad you love it! Thanks for all the support! 😊💕
Thank you this was great. Both oils are needed...but ppl are saying leave oils alone. What's that all about?
Girl, I took some serious notes. Thanks for helping your sistas out.
Lol you’re welcome! 😁💕
New here...what a great channel this is 🤩 Love all the information given and the cartoons especially 👌🏽 I‘m going to try both type of oils btw.
Awesome, thank you so much! ☺️ & yes, definitely try both, can only help! 💕
Can you do a list of most of the oils and butters that are penetrative in the hair shafts ?! Pretty please.
This is so helpful! Wow I love it!!
Awesome, so glad you enjoyed it! ☺️
Excellent video!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Well done!!
Nothing wrong with dropping some science on the community.
Not everyone likes using natural oils but for those who would like to give them a try, this video provides a good understanding of their functions.
Thank you so much for your kind words and support! :)
Well I love blue magic hair grease also my hair is locked I also use Jamaican black castor oil and tea tree oil I just recently started try aloe vera juice and go over to buy some 100% pure aloe vera oil
I've been using hair grease more lately and my hair has been loving it! I need to do separate videos on the benefits of that and jamaican black castor oil soon! Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
@@CollegeCurls good and can you also do a separate video on aloe vera oil please🙏
Love this
Yes I would love that video
Great! Added it to the schedule!
Thank you sooo much!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
You are so welcome!
Very informative, thank you. 👍🏾
You’re welcome, thank you for the support!
is Amla oil a moisturizing one? thx for this insightful video sis ^^
I love this and thank you nee subscriber and plus I would to see which specific fatty acids are in your favorite oils; I will like for you to us natural black owned brands, that's if you make that video.
I love that suggestion for both the specific fatty acids in my fav and with black owned products - I will definitely look into planning that video! & thank you for the support! 💕
Video Idea: Which specific fatty acids are in your fav/product oils?
Got it ty so much 💓
Ughhh she's so freakin smart!!!!
Lol thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! ☺️💕
What are good moisturizing oils for low porosity hair and good sealing oils for low porosity hair?
So what are examples of the moisturizing curls? The sealing oils? Which ones are more moisturizing than others, or a combination of both? Video was very informative- TYFS
Great video 👌🏿
Thank you so much! :)
i’m a bit late but can you use both in the same time like a moisturizing oil first then a sealing oil ?
So I am looking at 2 products:
Coconut Butter and Grape Seed Oil (GSO). The CB has 14g of Sat. fat and 0 of the mono or poly fats...the GSO has 14f fat and 2g of sat fat, 0 poly and mono. Does this clearly indicate that both of these are sealing? Your example compared one to the other's Total Fat as nearly the same. Could you clarify these for me?
Hmm, so I guess my question is if you do a hot oil treatment after shampooing do you still need to deep condition? I feel like you should alternate between the two because you could be over doing it.
Girl it was still confusing. Please tell me what oils to use for moisturizing for high porosity hair and which one seals??? I’m slow but want to know lol
So sweet almond oil is sealing or penitrating?
Thank you for this video. I knew nothing about saturated fatty.....
You’re welcome, I’m so glad to hear it helped! Thank you for watching and commenting! 💕
@@CollegeCurls Thanks!
Love me some mineral oil tho can't cap. Of course not for a hot oil treatment but my high density, low porosity, course strands LAUGH at a regular sealing oil. Drinks it up like its a moisturizing oil tbh. But those big particles in mineral oil will highkey keep me moisturized for a couple days to a week depending.
You know what Jonathan, I think I actually need to make a video on the benefits of mineral oil because since making this video I have learned alot about how it can be useful especially for the hair with characteristics like mine and yours. Thank you so much for watching, pointing this out, and commenting! :)
Nothing is wrong with mineral oil in grease...the mineral oil used in hair products is very refine and does no damage to the hair
can u use a mosturizing oil, and than apply a sealing oil straight after to seal in the moisture? i love the illustrations btw!
I would like to know the answer to that question too or even if you can mix both and one will moisturize and the other would seal
@@latasiatatum5996 same
Can you mix moisturizing and sealing oils?
damnnn sis🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌
Can I moisturise my hair with water and avocado oil mixed with Jamaican castor oil ? Pls help
I enjoyed the science facts, however is there a minimal amount of each fat content that makes oils a best oil for moisturizing vs sealant?
Thank you for your support! 😊💕 & Great question! In all honesty, I’m not completely sure if there is a minimum percentage that must be met, but I don’t believe there is. Naturally, the higher the percentage is would make it stronger (as either a moisturizing or sealing oil), but I haven’t heard of there being a threshold that has to be met for it to even qualify to begin with. 💕
Thank you whats the difference between plants based oils and the the vegetables ones?
Good question! Plant based oils are oils that come from actual plants. While you would think vegetable oils come from vegetables, that’s not completely true. Vegetable oils contain a mix of other chemicals, compounds, and additives that are mixed in during the processing of the oil for different reasons. Long story short, they’re just not as pure and natural as the plant based ones
Girl you made my head hurt lol lol lol
Need some examples of each type
Interesting! What happens when mixing moisturizing and penetrating oils together? I.e. mixing rice bran and coconut oil or another mix of multiple oils? Will the moisturizing oils have deeper penetration, less penetration, or about the same?
Actually nothing out of the ordinary happens! The moisturizing oil will still penetrate, but the sealing one will still sit on top the strand! Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
Now I finally understood the difference 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. Thank you so much 🥰.
You’re welcome, I’m so glad to hear it helped! Thank you for watching and commenting! 💕
Question !!
6:33 min : What were the other oils you left behind in the "no" cool kids section
Thank you so so much for this video. This is so so amazing!!
Thanks so much! I'm still a little confused, is it possible to make a go to list of actual oils and which is which like is coconut oil a moisturizer or sealant?
It's a moisturizer for scalp. Ex. Blue magic, Dax 🤷♀️ The sealant is olive oil, Jamaican Castor oil and etcetera. The products to grease scalp, is the moisturizer. The products that sits on your strands of hairs are the sealants. I think that's what she's saying.🙏🙏💚💚💚💚
@@sunshinehand1223 thank you😍 that is very helpful!!@
If you use gel and diffuse do you recommend using a sealing oil before diffusing or after?
I would slightly use the gel, along with a sealing oil.
Great UA-cam channel!
I'm indian I have wavy dry coarse hair will these oils work the same way on my hair?
Yes. Just use a small amount!
How do you know when to oil your hair? I live in a very dry climate (Las Vegas)
It depends on your hair to be honest (how well it retains moisture), but in a drier climate, tour hair could likely benefit from incorporating oil into your regular, daily moisturizing routine. I use oil in both my regular routine and hot oil treatments usually twice a month when my hair appears fuller or lacking in luster/shine no matter how much I moisturize with other products. If you’re looking for good daily moisturizing methods that incorporate oils, I would suggest either the LCO method or LOC method. Here are the links to both - LOC method: ua-cam.com/video/9mrXruHMtMo/v-deo.html and LCO method: ua-cam.com/video/GwuJQTtxgys/v-deo.html I hope these help! 😊💕
How is an oil not plant-based if it's vegetable oil?
Should you apply an oil before or after showering?
There isn't a hard rule for applying oils before or after showering, but, if you have the option, doing so before showering may help the oil absorb into your hair and scalp better as a steamy shower would open your pores more. And it can be a plus if you're a little messy after oiling your hair too lol :)
Your great , thansk
You are! :) And you're so welcome!
