He also throughout the story, he gets taller with Alisaie. My female Miqo'te is the shortest you can be for the race and in ARR, I think he went up to my chest in height, now we're in Shadowbringers and he's almost as tall as my character. lol
The twins are growing and we're witnessing it as the story progresses. It's great!
I actually feel like he sounds like a teenager in HW and beyond, and in ARR sounded like an adult trying to voice a child

Absolutely. The actor's portrayal is up there with Shohreh Aghdashloo for that smokey goodness. Different, but just as unique and interesting.

I just finished ARR and transition to Heavensward
She went from a commander to a.... well maybe her when she started her career as a babe and not had to deal with the kind of shit the commander of a pirate faction would have to endure.
The last thing old Merlwyb said in ARR was "DAMN IT ALL" before storming off. It was a great example of the kind of bluntness in her life that had probably moulded her.
I'm just hearing her new voice for the first time, and there is nothing in that.
They should have re-recorded ARR with the new actors, to prevent all new players from having experience this very jarring transition. It would be in the players interest that they never know differently.

The power in that voice was amazing.
The new VA has exudes the power of a wet fart.
Though it does seem to match closer to the JP VA.
She was one of those super rare cases like Cowboy Bebop and FMA where the DUB is better than the original VA.
I miss "SEVEN HELLS" Merlwyb so much. I looked forward to her scenes just to listen to her gruff voice. I clung to the delusion that her actress might have stayed behind...a piece of my soul broke when that magnificent voice actress departed.
Is it just me or her old voice actor sounded like Elenwen from Skyrim
You could hear her voice struggling later on in the game though. I guess older voice actors really struggle with the constant multiple recordings and straining their voice for not the greatest pay.

Not the original one. Yugiri had 3 voice actresses. The one who voiced her in Heavensward was the one who tragically passed.
Sian Blake was the voice actress for her in Heavensward. Churns my stomach to know what happened, but I'm glad the piece of filth was brought to justice.

I was honestly surprised when I learned Y'shtola's voice actor had also changed from ARR because the new voice actor sounds so identical to the original and it scares me lol
agree, but the new voice had a little subtle "sus" in it, so I personally like it a lot more

Very much the same inflections and vocal habits. Either they intentionally got someone with a similar voice or the VA is amazing. Yda is pretty good too.

The old Alphinaud voice is like a smart cheeky tactician who's self assured of what he does. The new Alphinaud voice is a more serious tactician.
His ARR voice made me think he was plotting something when I first met him. Of course, as time went one, he started fumbling the ball more and more.

I agree Alphinaud certainly sound cheeky and full of himself, but i feel it fits and he learns and get more mature after failures.
Fun Fact: Old Alphinaud was Sam Riegel and Old Thancred was Taliesin Jaffe both from Critical Roll (Popular DnD Stream on Twitch/UA-cam).
He sounds comically British. His accent is so thick you can cut it with a knife. The voice acting is better but the voice sounds horrible.

I honestly think the Alphinaud voice change comes at the perfect time. ARR has him as a cocky, self-assured child prodigy who projects the image of perfection, which is what he is right until the end of that story. As soon as Heavensward rolls around his confidence is shattered, and we get to see more of him as an actual kid, who doesn't have every life skill he needs, is nervous under pressure, and can occasionally be a bit dorky and insecure. Each voice fits each part of his character arc really well.

Yorkshire Ala Mhigo was the best decision. Giving M'naago, Ilberd, Raubro and Conrad similar accents cements Ala Mhigo as a place with its own identity, I love it.

The old voices weren't bad just a bit on the cartoony side. (Alphinaud was played by a ninja turtle). The new voices really lend to the necessary emotional depth found in the later expansions.
Correction: Alphinaud’s voice was played by Sam Riegel! Sam frickin Riegel! 💕 (He may or may not voice a ninja turtle lol)
In seriousness though the last VA crew weren’t given ample time to prepare and were kind of rushed through the process. That’s why even though the VAs themselves are talented, their scripts often had a lot of voicing errors. You can literally hear the difference in the delivery of their lines now vs then. SE are taking better care of them now. So glad Yoshi P and their team took over.

@@e.k_liadon ARR's voice acting sounds like they just gave the voice actors the scripts with only their individual lines and said "just read this." Later voice acting sounds like they had some actual direction, maybe a storyboard or early animation samples for context.
I just got to Heavensward and just before Tataru was sooo cartoonish it was WTF ?! Then voice toned down and fit the scenes

it's weird, i've gotten used to the new actors for the most part but hearing them side by side just makes the new voices sound alien all over again. taliesin jaffe was great as thancred and it's really a shame they didn't keep him. i will say sam riegel has early alphinaud's little shit personality pretty well perfect, but i like how colin ryan handles his more humbled, grounded persona from heavensward on.
Sam Rigel wasn’t able to consistently keep up the accent so the change over was for tge better IMO. Honestly the only things lost here for me are Talesin and maaaybe Thancred’s VA in ARR. I really appreciate the change to not have all Lalas be squeekers. That would have gotten so old.

Would it be wrong to redub the ARR cutscenes with the new VAs? No offense to the original VAs and not to undermine them, just for the sake of consistency. Just where appropriate.

not going to lie they got pretty close with Y'Shtola's second VA. Thancred's sound similar enough so long as you dont hear them side by side. Yda and Papalymo had different sounding voices, but they got their style and rhythm close enough. Uri's just sounds like his voice got deeper
I actually kinda miss Urianger's old VA, since it was the same as Ignis in FFXV: it had the tone of responsibility and maturity....sometimes, the new Urianger feels like he's smug with his knowledge XD
Fun fact the voice actor who does the voice for the character Urianger is the same voice actor who does final fantasy 12 Balthier.

@nathanosworth4640 Emery Gideon didn't voice Ignis , he voiced Balthier in XII . Adam Croasdell voiced Ignis . And unlike Urianger , Ignis did more than studying and divining . He was the steward of the group and the more diligent of the group .
(possible spoiler alert) I’m actually really glad they changed Urianger’s voice actor. Hearing Gideon/Balthier’s familiar voice when un-hooded Urianger first appeared would’ve gave it all away
I'm a bit of a Gideon Emery fanboy but honestly I agree
I personally am in love with the new cast and they felt more fitting then the original. But I do have a soft spot for some of the old voices. Like Yda being voiced by Mela Lee, Minifila's old VA, and Pipin being voiced by Max Mittelman.
But the old cast also had VA's that are pretty common now in dubbing work. So it's nice to hear some fresh voices that you don't hear like everywhere. lol

And frankly the switch from Yda to.. Yda was weird. Why did the character go from a complete ditz to a pragmatic strategist?

I think what I liked most was when they stopped trying to make the lalas all sound like children. Nanamo and Tataru especially. I think the most grievous change, however, was Merlwyb's change. No shade on Tracy Ann Oberman as an actor, but she took what Jean Gilpin created and turned it into a pirate caricature. It's never sat right with me.
Yes! Tracy just lacks the “oomph” that makes Merlwyb so badass! I miss her old voice ;3;
Literally the only 'old' voice I wish they hadn't changed - her old voice was just so perfect for a tough commanding woman. The most recent voiced scene was better than the ones in stormblood (where she sounded positively girlie) but still not as good as the original.
I just figured they were trying to emulate the Japanese version. They do higher pitched voices, seemingly, for that given their sizes.
@@ssjup81 So in the Japanese voices the Lalafell dont all sound high pitched some of the ones in Ul'dah actually had rather deep voice actors doing lines and Pipin is voiced by the person who's known for Adult Link shouts in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time who's also done a bunch of other stuff since
Dunno man, it made lalafel voices actually Unique. Sure it sounded weird in the beginning, but when its a pattern of the race. It makes a lot of sense. The new case everyone sound the same. Average "Wolverine-fallen hero-cool guy voice nº1" and "Average female voice nº1" I hardly can distinguish the characters(With exception of Alphinaud)
I used to feel really attached to ARR Alphinaud and felt it was a bizarre getting use to him in HW. Listening back now to ARR after having nearly completed Shb I cannot believe I liked old Alphinaud. Holy lord the change.
i’m in the exact same boat, i remember being so upset when starting HW and hearing alphinaud’s voice chance, but listening back i just think that the new one fits so much better lol

I love Yda's A Realm Reborn voice but it definitely wouldn't match in the upcoming expansions; especially for Stormblood. :D

Whenever I hear that voice, I'm reminded of Rachel Alucard from BlazBlue, voiced by the same actress. A gothic aristocratic condescending vampire. Couldn't be farther from Yda.
@@Galacticavatar She'd probably change the voice to show that she's a different person (I know some characters voiced by her which have aggressive tones, namely Scarlet from Trails of Cold Steel)
Thancred's is the most upsetting change to me.
Merlywb's is the most tragic change. I can't watch scenes with the new voice actress without cringing.
I think it suits him as a dad now.

as I just got the first cut scene of HW Alphinaud is pretty bad, like there is no snark left and he became british? or do they all become british?
@@ProfessorGunk They changed studio so now they record in the UK. Alphinaud is a little rough at first but it's a fit eventually. After the events of ARR he's in more of a humbled role who looks up to certain other characters in the story for a time.
Urianger sounded like he went from Narrator’s voice over to Actual supporting cast member
Absolutely insane that Sam Reigal voiced Alphinaud and Talisan Jaffe did thancred. They're such exceptional voice actors but you can tell it all had no direction

No-one talks about Papalymo. He was a crap character and a bit of a bully towards Yda.

yeah, i just replayed ARR and HW, and i don't get the bully vibe. i definitely get an "annoyed by her general impulsiveness and tendency to not think things through" vibe, that sometimes creeps over into snarkiness, but it never came off as bullying to me
I miss Taliesin Jaffe as Thancred, literally my favorite VA and my favorite character

whenever the original urianger spoke i couldn't help but picture Balthier. odd that that voice came from someone who's not the leading man.
The post-ARR voice of Y'shtola is the same voice as Sara in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
It's fun hearing her voice in something else.
As well as that, the ARR Urianger is Fenris of Dragon Age 2 fame. And I guess Samson too.
Most of the new voices are nicer, but I miss Thancred's old voice actor, i miss that sass!
You can say that again, I mean... even though he takes a more tactical approach to things, he's still snarky at times

Alphinaud's change actually matched quite nicely with the change in his personality. both voices fitted the kind of person he was and has become
It feels like they had a good starting point for them all in ARR but then hit the perfect stride when HW came around. Granted it was incredibly jarring and almost somewhat upsetting at the time but following getting used to them it was undoubtedly a very positive change.
I like Urianger's vojce so much
Yshtola is so similar but much more emotive
I think Alisae had a pretty good voice switch too
A reminder that most of this ARR VAs were the same(as far as I've seen) as the ones in 1.0. So they were asked back to a somewhat failing game at the time with probably the knowledge that they would not be hired back since they were moving to a UK(?) Studio over a US one. I did like most of the old Scions VAs along with Raubahn, Merlwyb and Gaius and who knows if they could of gotten back into the grove into HW. That being said I love the current VAs and it's cool to see how Alphinaud's VA has improved over the years.

I much prefer the new cast. The voices fit better and the acting is better. Papalymo especially went from nails-on-a-chalkboard annoying to perfectly tolerable.
Yep, the whole "From tragedy and sacrifice, we rise to greet a new dawn" line might've sounded about 10x more cringey
I liked the old dub, but I have grown to like the new dub better. I especially like Alphinaud's new voice because he actually sounds more like a teenager.
I like how Alphinaud sounds like he has it together and then he just drops it comes Heavensward-onwards, because his refined voice was just some affectation he did to distance himself.
alphinaud's voice actor change was rough... he went from the guy from mephisto from blue exorcist trying to play a teenager, to well his new va, and it was hard to adjust to until I got further along.
With really only one exception I MUCH prefer the new voice actors to the old. This may not be the voice actors' fault, mind you, but just the level of direction they were given for their roles. Still, the newer voices just sound a lot more "fantasy" and I appreciate it.

It does! But that doesn't fit his face now that we see it. I think it sounds too old for him, but it is one of the better original voices.
@@leonie7754 well I guess the VA referenced the fact that Urianger is a little bit old fashion - in his manner of speaking and I have no idea if Elezens live hundreds of year that would probably consider his age - old.
It's funny, cause his new VA could probably be legit heard as a BBC announcer. Hell, he played a villain in a BBC radio drama.

I really appreciate the new English voice acting, just the same, do I dislike the quality of the audio dropping from some of the voices like post-hw Minfillia, sounding like she's almost swallowing the microphone.
The contract with the company supplying the voice actors ran out, and SqE had to go elsewhere

I love Yda's voice so much. I wish they revealed that Yda was actually alive and them BAM, it's the old VA.

I love Sam Riegel but he made Alphinaud so unlikeable.
Alphinaud as a character was super unlikeable. He was a rich, stuck up snob who thought way too highly of himself despite the fact that he couldn’t actually deliver and it was the WoL’s efforts that created the change he was looking for. Then when he created the Crystal Braves, his Ego was on max! Lol
I honestly think if Colins voiced Alphinaud in ARR he wouldn’t have the same level of “arrogant rich prick” that Sam Riegel brought to the table. I think Colins’ depiction of his voice after ARR really reinforces that sense of “Just got my Ego shoved up my ass,” that Sam’s depiction wouldn’t bring to the table. I think the timing of voice changes for Alphinaud was perfect storyline wise in that respect.
What, they dumped Taliesin Jaffy(?) as Thancred? :O That guy was the highlight of my MSQ.
maaaaan i liked Yda's ARR voice shes such a great actress shes kikimora in owl house, rachel alucard in blazblue, she has such a fitting voice.

So i dont follow voice actors, i just play games and watch animes and dont give it much thought. But now i'm a turned Critter and am in love with the Critical Role community and the nerdy bunch of voice actors playing. I have been playing FFXIV since original 2010 launch and now 11 years later i'm just discovering that ARR voices of Thancred was voiced by Tallison Jaffe, and Alphinaud by Sam Riegal? I'm such an ostrich. trying to find any video footage of it is hard though, i like seeing the actors do the voices. I can't remember Alphinauds original voice sound
nothing quite like going through three expansions with the new voices and then going back to an alt in ARR and hearing the old voices out of nowhere

Papalymo received the biggest improvement from the voice swap.
I'm not entirely sure if I like new Alphinaud or old Alphinaud better.
After playing through HW and STB I had forgotten what Sam Riegel's voice sounded like for Alphinaud, but after hearing it again I'm on the fence :/
I used to love his ARR voice and was bummed when it got changed. But I've now gotten used to his new VA (after hearing it for so many years) so I prefer it. :x
Tataru's ARR VA didn't have a high peek, because she started talking at the end of ARR
I love all the new voices better (the ones in the video, i cant remember who else changed). Maybe it's the writing and the voices. I find it rly distracting if I feel like theyre acting out a Shakespeare play. The new voices have a lot more emotion and feels natural.
I miss old cid and that other character from 2.0 that has a prominent voice and comes back in Stormblood, I’m being vague for spoiler reasons.

Bethan Cullinane is Livingway and Mappingway's voice. Haley Alexander voiced Nanamo in 2.0. From what a search says.
People need to give the old voices more credit, I think people just default to "Oh, they changed the voices so obviously they were bad!" but look at these names, Sam Riegel, Gideon Emery... these are top VAs!
What about Alisaie? She is voiced during the Final Coil of Bahamut turns 3 and 4. She also got a significant personality change as well
It's certainly a different performance between the two, but you also gotta remember outside of the starting bits with Alphinaud she didn't appear outside of Bahamut raids and didn't reappear until Stormblood. so it might be right to say most don't remember what her old voice actor sounded like.

Alphi's old voice actor really had that Pretentious Spoiled Little Shit down pat. Changing his va right as he finally has to take a good hard look at himself, his failures, and his values made for a good transition.
(That said. I prefer [and recommend!] the French audio for HW. even if Alphi's va is pretty much the only voice I Don't like lol!)

Just got to Heavensward and the VA change is jarring to say the least, some are better but quite a few are worse. Merlwyb and Urianger in particular sound much worse than before, but I guess that's just how it goes with long running games.
They get much better the deeper into the game you get, just like how the ARR voices got much better with each patch all the way to 2.5. It also doesnt help that the actual _quality_ of the recordings in Heavensward is pretty bad too. Merylwyb in particular has some very good voice acting in Shadowbringers.
Yeah I'm just getting to stormblood and i actually prefer all the original voices over the new ones. they just sound so generic and vaguely british
