- "The biggest impact on your health is not with a blockbuster drug, it’s not with a new pioneering surgical technique, it’s with the simplest solution. It’s how we feed ourselves".
Dr Rupy Aujla is an NHS doctor who believes modern medicine is fundamentally missing a focus on nutritional medicine. Despite diet being an essential ingredient to our well-being, medical students in the UK often receive just a few hours training in nutrition.
Rupy's TEDx talk explores the medicinal effects of different ingredients and debunks some common 'diets', focusing on how we can make 'culinary medicine' rather than fad diets the default option.
Rupy founded ‘Culinary Medicine’ - a non-profit organisation - specifically to address this gap by teaching doctors and medical students the foundations of nutrition as well as teaching them how to cook.
In his role as clinical adviser to the Royal College of GP's and more recently being accepted as a fellow on the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme - Rupy has big aspirations to bring the concept of 'Culinary Medicine' to the profession globally.
Recently Rupy and the Culinary Medicine team have successfully taught Year 3 University of Bristol Medical students as part of their undergraduate training and they're working with University College London to deliver a course to their students this year.
Rupy is equally passionate about sharing good nutritional advice and delicious healthy recipes with the general public via his company 'The Doctor's Kitchen'. He aims to inspire patients about the beauty of food and the amazing clinical research behind the ingredients he uses. He has two best-selling cookbooks - ‘The Doctor’s Kitchen’ and his second book 'Eat to Beat Illness' which was released in March 2019 and quickly became a Sunday Times Bestseller.

This is why I'm completing a degree in nutrition science before I go to medical school.
This video changed my life; now I'm 100% sure what I want to study in university and what I'm really interested in.
Dr Aujla is doing an incredible work in social media promoting this approach. Finally getting the medical profession concerned about nutrition and not just prescribing drugs for everything,
appreciate that ana
Finally, a Doctor that promotes healthy eating to his patients as an alternative to taking medication.
thanks eddie!

What good does promoting healthy eating really do. Some 10% are eating properly anyway and need not preaching. Rest 50-60% are junk food addicts and wont change a thing and rest 30% are on food stamps and starving and eat what they can scavenge. So preaching on diet exercise is wasted effort. Find a study where advice on healthy food and exercise made a real difference in a community over ten years. There are some examples of 5-6 years long benefits but they vanish as people resort to their older habits. I fails all the time.
It is not an alternativ is a complement keep taking your madication but also eat healthy
I watched this video twice. The first time was for the wonderful information. And second time was for the hot doctor.
Finally someone comes in with a fresh and neutral view on foods and health. Trying to compliment all health professionals , and not argue about who’s “right” and who’s “wrong”! Awesome work Rupy- keep going 🙏
you know it stefan
This is amazing! As a medical student, I wish my school had a culinary medicine course... in fact I may just try to help implement that during my last year. I started a UA-cam channel for my future patients and it’s focus is going to be on lifestyle change like nutrition!
appreciate that mate :)
I work for the Dept. of Aging & Disability in the Cape May co area of NJ. Part of this program's 'job' is to feed the needy, and elderly. my job is to bring meals to the Elderly.
The first 6 months of working there, I also ate a meal. Within 6 months, I ended up gaining 20 lbs. I have since Lost that weight - but what I realized is how UNHEALTHY the food that we are serving these people, actually IS !!! It's loaded with sugars, salts, and who knows what ... under the idea that we are doing a good job for those who can't afford a meal? Honestly - not one of these people need this food. The over all expense of each meal for the County Govt. is about $11 - we ask for a $2 donation from each client.
I've also figured that IF I gained 20 lbs - what is this food doing to those who are really much older than me?
Honestly - IF you want to look at the WHOLE SYSTEM in which we are living - YOU might be fighting a losing battle. Our Society has become fooled into thinking that we live with a Healthy Food System - when IT is far from it....from all angles. From the Grocery Stores to Doctors - to Manufacturing companies that are marketing their Food as Healthy. Our Society is HOOKED on Sugar!
WE have become mentally lazy to even research what is going on. We SIT too much, and making our Self Sick in the process.
Maybe you need to Change YOUR Whole Course - and make a Radical Change to be taken seriously? Hook up with Professionals that feel the same way you do - There is Power in Numbers!

@@adejumobidarecharles4578 No what?
@@adejumobidarecharles4578 Food has a direct effect on your health, and with obesity rates climbing, it's no wonder that people are getting sicker in their younger years as much as the elderly.
I can vouch for what he is preaching. In the past i used to eat healthy and workout, then i drifted my focus towards making money and working hard , i still worked out but little by little i started neglecting my diet so my weight kept bounching up and down.
In the past year, with every meal i would eat, regardless of what it was, i always add a salad, some tomatoes cucumbers red onion lettuce and a little vinegar and i must say that indeed my weight has stabilized, i do have more energy but now eventho i'm heavier than i used to be (now at 88kg), i feel more agile, flexible, i don't run out of breath like i used to.
So people, make small changes, add a salad, eat an apple, baby steps. Stay healthy because no-one will take care of you like yourself.
small changes and it works!
"Medicine is NOT healthcare.
FOOD is HEALTHCARE.
MEDICINE is SICK CARE."
~ someone I don't know
I don't know either.
Excellent presentation. As a dietitian I enjoyed it. Especially liked how he spoke about the food environment and determinants of health.
thanks mate. the environment is so important
Dr. Rupy Aujla, you made me cry!
YES!! This is everything I teach in Food Freedom. No wonder Rupy is one of my favourite doctors. We need more of his colleagues recognising the power of food for health
absolutely, thanks Kate!
Food Freedom me no more food from now onwards like going braless?
Bless you for being a blessing. Revolutionizing medicine = true health care!
The video was very informative. As a medical doctor, I found it very enjoyable. It's important to note that many diseases are a result of unhealthy eating habits. Food can be a form of medicine, so it's crucial to be mindful of the quantity, type, and preparation of the food we consume.
I don't think you have any credibility as a doctor. I think you are just a lousy phony like everyone else because of how you behave.
“Let thy food be thy medicine “
Thank you Dr Aujla ..
excellent way of explaining.
Old school doctors knew nothing about nutrition.. thus went onto prescribing pills for the digestive system which in return ended up having so many side effects …leading up-to early death..Thank you for sharing this awareness.
That was a really well delivered talk, if only all doctors were as capable of bringing science down to earth in this way.
A doctor of the future 🙏🙏 thank you Dr Aujla. Culinary medicine is the future of medicine 🙏🙏
Currently 18 and ill be taking up bachelors in dietetics in few months ...hopefully ill be able to bring awareness and help many to know how important of a role food plays in our lives ❤...
There's a lot of misconception about diet and some people see it as a "one size fits all" thing , which is not the case , and from my experience , ive seen people ignore healthy foods and just eat absolutely anything....that might lead to harmfull condiitions years later , well i guess not many are aware of how complex food really can be , and in this day and age there's a rise in ultra processed food and industries keep manufacturing low nutrition eatables
I believe everyone does need to know and be more aware that we need to eat carefully and prevention is better than cure ,
Anyways this was just my opinion ♡. and id like to read others opinions too why not
Love Rupy's message. Your body is your temple, must provide it good nourishment. Let go of the past habits and the cravings...
thanks nicole!
Dr Rupy Aujla is amazing ... So great to see a mainstream doctor being so forthright about the importance of a (mainly) plant-based diet. 💚
Absolutely Jason, we have to try :)
Which stream did you catch him out of. Was he drowsing ?
An eye opener.. Thank you Dr.
Wow incredible. This is so true and thank you for supporting the community.
Thank you Rupi, each and every word of yours has been resonating with my philosophy of nourishment and preventative action through our wholesome food. As an Indian dietitian and practicing NZ Registered nutritionist, always believed in power of FOOD as PRANA Shakti which not only nourish our body, but also mind and our soul. It has been such a delight to hear this from a Doctor. Indeed much needed good health and wellbeing, bright future for all
I totally agree, there are many ways to nourish the soul :)
We need more videos like this from knowledgeable professionals 👌🏼
This is the best podcast ever Much gratitude n thanks
We couldn't agree more! Thank you for sharing!
Wow this was excellent! 👏🏽 one of the best talks I've heard in its simplest form
Love this!
Brilliant, great presentation and tremendous information on eating healthy. Following a carotid artery blockage followed by a stroke and resulting Carotid endarterectomy in 2018 I decided to find out more about diet and healthy eating. Since then I have lost 3.5 stone, eat a mostly plant based diet, control alcohol intake to 10 units per week and follow the brilliant advice of a lot of your guests on the Doctors Kitchen like Pro Tim Spector & Pro Robert Thomas.
Thank you very much Dr Rupy.
GREAT JOB! This man sounds exactly like me. I live this and have for many years now. I am total agreement
Great talk and helpful insights from a doctor on food.
Really impactful speech doctor!
Absolutely loved it
Fabulous so inspiring
Very informative and helpful
Thank you.
Great talk. Balanced approach.. thank you
appreciate that Cathy
Amazing humans well done, this gives so much hope 💪💪💪❤️🙏🙏🙏
Excellent talk, I agree on all points and am all for nutrition over pharma meds. This needs to be more common knowledge especially amongst doctors and those in the medical community.
Love this! Great talk :)
Great doctor, welcome from Nepal
So good to see someone who prioritizes eating healthy over taking medication.
Thank you. I try, every day, to add, 'just one (or three ) more' to the point my recipes might be questioned but, who cares? Not me. I truly believe that we are the result of what we eat.
Well said!
Thanks for the video
I pray more people learn about nutrition. It may not fix everything because damage is already done but it can reverse some illnesses and if doesn’t have bad side effects as most medicines do.
I greatly appreciate the argument which Dr. Aujla brings up through the viewpoint of preventative medicine. The way he speaks towards food as a preventative source against cardiovascular disease, and specific inflammatory syndromes which we as a medical community see time and time again is a necessary message for our patient population. While his point is notable and necessary for so many people to hear in this medicine first, lifestyle change later culture, we need to consider justice for those in communities which may not have the luxury of having these foods nearby. Although Dr. Aujla brings up teaching his patients how to cook and shape their diets within a NHS appointment, you still need to consider the constraints placed on certain communities. In many low-income communities, grocery stores may not be found nearby. On top of that, research has shown that in these same communities, the display of junk foods may be marketed more heavily than that of certain healthy foods.1 With this brought up, I don’t want to take away from what Dr. Aujla is saying - a healthy diet should be one of the main tools practitioners use to keep patients healthy and we should be practicing proactive medicine rather than reactive medicine. But, in order to do so, we must first consider the patient populations we work with and seek justice for all our patient populations. This means making sure that these patients have equal access to food and an equal playing field (no junk food marketing campaigns, no having to travel at great lengths, etc.). Health prevention is a great message, but we need to give our communities the chance to position themselves in order to accomplish such things.

Love doctor Rupy
Food has the power to define your genetic expression. This means it impacts the quality and quantity of life itself expressed in you. Let’s choose to do right by our health!
it does, we've done a podcast on this too :)
We are so evolved and so technologically advanced but then we’re only just recently learning and understanding the importance of something so basic like the fact that we should eat properly to be well. Then our ancestors were better than us, because they did that, they may not have been so advanced as us but they did it right. We are so far removed by what being human means that is very scary. Hopefully we can go back to basics.
I wish I could like this video more than once!
Thank you. Inspirational.
my pleasure Martin
AWESOME.
Totally agree.
great video from one of my favourite lifestyle medicine medics
thanks Katie!
Yes, to all of this! Thanks for sharing a wealth of easy to understand information I’m able to pass along to my parents to watch. I’ve been following you online for over a year and cooking out of your books. As a lifelong vegetarian since 13 years old and healthy eating advocate, I’m hopeful you’ll inspire more doctors to inform their patients about the best preventative medicine - food. Keep going!!!
what a lovely message, thanks so much for the support Jill
What's the name of his channel, please
Thanks
Let Medicine be thy food and Food be thy Medicine. A Fantastic vision and presentation
Expect a major intervevntion from "our" friends in Big Pharma, cos there ain't no profit in preventitive medicine.
Well said: having spent some time in medical care, I became aware that it would be quite easy to go down with scurvy in an NHS hospital. Having asked someone to bring me some fruit, I was advised not to eat a grapefruit, it would interfere with a pill I had been prescribed. When I took a look at what this pill was, I noted its long list of side-effects - likely reaction to the toxins contained therein. Contraindications for grapefruit: nil. I ate the grapefruit and not the pill. After I got home - this was a heart triple by-pass surgery - I dumped all the medication they'd given me a week later and felt better the very next day. That was a couple of years ago. I haven't touched a pill since, nor any junk food. I'm 72, fit and well.
Wonderful to know that you realised the importance of fruit and nutrition over pills ..
I just can say, the Doctor has said the true about nutrition, so, let's be conscious about how the food can improve the health and well-being. The nutrition is the best preventive medicine. I hope study Nutrition next year in London
this guy 🖤
love u rupy!!
Excellent and such an important message. I hope the Coronavirus crisis will persuade politicians of the real need to support a major change in our food systems. We need to reempower farmers and growers, reduce the role of multinational conglomerates whose interventions generally raise prices while lowering nutritional value, and ensure that everyone, whatever their income, has access to tasty and nutritious food. Not easy but we have to try.
I think it's shifting our engrained beliefs and hopefully for the better :) thanks Margaret!
You bring up an excellent point! It is true that especially during the pandemic- worsening food desserts, difficulties with supply chain management, and more difficulties with food access. It has also been documented that certain cultures/nations, largely due to their diet, have increased or decreased longevity. Perhaps this warrants government officials at various levels to do full research or enact legislation to ensure proper balanced nutrition for school lunches, or more full encompassing nutrition within public schools and even medical schools. Promoting dietitians and nutritionists. I agree that food is the body's fuel and can make a huge impact and be part of the healing process.
Thanks Dr good clean food is medicine
The change was made by my husband, when his Osteopath suggested changing his breakfast from sugar cereal to egg beans and kale. His colour has gone from grey to healthy!
fantastic!
Wonderful! Also part of a healthy lifestyle is exercising. It is as important .
agreed :)
Slight correction- not so much "exercise" as physical activity
The narrative of this content is rich with motivational elements. A book with related themes had a profound impact on me. "Your Body Your Temple" by Sophia Wintergreen
What was shocking when I went to the UK was the lack of fresh foods on the shelves.
Very informative and well articulated. Being a recent graduate of Bristol University and competing in the Boxing team, my nutritional diet allowed me to compete at an optimal level whilst balancing my final year workload. The ideas are similar to Dr Joel Fuhrman. Food is medicine!
thanks Aman!
Great talk - I'm starting to think lack of fiber is the biggest issue for most people
It really is :)
❤❤❤
Amazing Rupi
thanks Martina!
I had a terrible struggle to get a blood test on the NHS my gp wasn't too happy to send me for a cholesterol check its one thing trying to stay healthy by healthy eating and exercise, another to establish a base line when the NHS is not geared towards investing in prevention
❤️ from 🇮🇳
Food plays some part in health? I never knew that until now. Thanks for the info.
😂😂
Let thy food be thy medicine and they medicine be thy food.
this is a good talk. How to adjust this talk for students age 11-16 to listen to and learn as part of their studies in Food Preparation and Nutrition
yes absolutely, I'm working on something like that
Food is life
absolutely
You talk passionately, that is what we do at Herbalife Nutrition. We, wellness coaches teach our clients to eat right. Putting value on Nutritious over Delicious.
Best to avoid MLM schemes though
you judged us. You dont need to do the business. You can stick to just being a customer.
I would add if cost is difficult to justify eating well/colorful grow what you can, you don't need an expensive greenhouse/garden just some soil and a little knowledge. Great presentation.

First person to like this video..!! ;)
I saw an ad here in UA-cam of a local department store offering discountts to those who will present a vaccination card.? Why arent they offering big discounts to their customers who are buying 50% or more of vegetables, fruits and other healthy products of their total purchases instead.? They know for a fact that prevention is better than solution or cure.
Ive noticed in some supermarkets, they even price vegetables and fruits way too high than unhealthy products. If these people really are concern, they should promote and support healthy lifestyle because I think this is a wake up call to all of us, we need to change our ways of living...we need to eat healthy.
They problem is that they really aren't concerned about other's health. They are concerned with making a profit. I honestly do not find that unhealthy food is cheaper. I look at a pie or cake & think, I can buy 2 pounds of berries for what that cost!
FOOD IS MEDICINE!
😢
The UK- "Chips" with everything
it always makes me wonder why food in hospitals is such a poor quality?
