Thalidomide and similar derivatives are still used today for cancer treatment. It's extremely controlled and you are specifically NOT allowed to get pregnant on it anymore. There is a REMS program to mitigate this, but the drugs do help patients with blood cancers live for years and years.
@ats-3693 they even warn men who take it not to have unprotected sex because they can't rule out the possibility of thalidomide in sperm causing birth defects.
Interesting fact about thalidomide. It is what is known in organic chemistry as *chiral* which means that there are two different structures, one that points to the right and one that points to the left (it's a bit more complicated than this). The right-facing molecule (R-thalidomide) has the desired anti-morning sickness effects, while the left-facing molecule (S-thalidomide) causes birth deformity. The only difference is the rotation around a single carbon-nitrogen bond in the chemical structure. And, even thought it is possible to separate out only R-thalidomide, in a biological environment the body can actually convert between the two to produce S-thalidomide regardless.
i had an antidepressant that was like the benoxaprofen, helped with the depression and shit, but going outside in the sun was almost like torture, would almost immediately be hot and sweaty and then would "over sweat" and quickly get to where it feels like i was going to pass out, absolutely terrible, whats the point of feeling better if i cant go out and do anything ya know?
I find it distressing that in many MANY cases of folks having a mental disorder that it's never really a "treatment" or a "cure", it's more like "Oh, you don't like your depression? NO PROBLEM! We can trade in that tired old depression for marked weight loss, anxiety, hypertension, personality changes, sleep disorders........." the list just never stops. Oh, and you still might also be depressed. Now let's talk about some of the rebound effects of coming OFF those drugs.
Thalidomide isn't banned though, just prohibited for the original use. It's a really effective immunomodulator. Besides being used to treat cancers it's also used to treat skin disorders, especially complications that come from having leprosy. If birth defects were a reason to ban a drug, then accutane wouldn't be able to be prescribed.
I know right. In my country it is prescription only but we use it in hospitals all the time, also nimesulide is approved here. Was surprised to see both although I guess the side effects are pretty valid to warrant a ban.
This is a major exaggeration for clicks and views. It's not an uncommon act for this account. Metamizol is prescription only in a few places in the EU but still prescribed often, specially for people with chronic pain who can't take NSAIDs for whatever reason (gastritis, stomach ulcers, asthma, you name it) as they would be much more susceptible to liver damage due to long term use of paracetamol then they are at risk of agranulocytosis because it really is very rare.
Here in Switzerland Metamizole is prescription only. I got several Metamizole IVs in the hospital when I had my appendix removed last year, both before and after the surgery. Metamizole is pretty much the strongest non-opioid pain killer and I believe it was proven that higher Metamizole consumption is correlated with lower opioid consumption because there just isn‘t a proper non-opioid alternative to it so in places where it is banned people with bad pain are more likely to receive opioids when in certain cases Metamizole might‘ve been sufficient.
Oh I love Hungary, I live in the US because my mom and dad came here when they were young… but my whole family’s from there. I was just visiting earlier this year. Somethin so special about it to me. ❤

Phentermine has been confirmed to be safe to use if you dont have heart problems, but it is not a long term prescription. Its supposed to be a temporary prescription you take for under a year.
I have chronic hypoglycemia, and chronic tendinitis! it's great when you go to eat, but your sugar is so low that you're nauseous and the smell and sight of food makes it worse. you go to pick up your fork, and the tendons in your hand refuse to let you :) (reenactment dramatized for comedic effect, based on a true story)
Metamizole and nimesulide are not banned in Poland. The former is OTC and the latter prescription only. I've taken nimesulide in the past for strong headaches caused by sinusitis, it's very effective for that purpose.
Phenmetrazine actually doesn't sound too terrible. Paranoia and jitters isnt too bad of a side effect. The worst is the addictive nature of it but even so i can probably see that proving useful for someone who wants to work out often. Id argue that the Venlafaxine im on needs banned because of how bad its withdrawal symptoms are.
Tylenol isn't problem free, either: use it a lot and you'll be looking for a new liver. A word about cholesterol and statins: Statins - ALL statins - should be banned outright. They work by breaking the 13-step process by which the liver manufactures cholesterol, which is all well and good; but at the same time they prevent the liver from making Co-enzyme Q10, which keeps the heart beating regularly. As the body's store of Q10 depletes, arrhythmia develops; if untreated that becomes ischaemic heart failure (the heart beats so weakly, it can't circulate blood to the extremities; then it can't beat at all). Of course, there is such a thing as a Co-enzyme Q10 supplement, but they're expensive to buy (over here anyway), so quite a few people can't afford them, and the doctors won't prescribe them in tandem with the statins. The other issue is that any cell in the body can make cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol has been shown to be protective against cell damage. In the UK these drugs have been given out like candy, and blood test results appear to have been falsified in order to prescribe these drugs. Why? Because doctors and consultants got bonuses from Big Pharma (and they still may do) for prescribing these drugs, notwithstanding whether they're either necessary _or_ safe.
