Ling was never the empress. Her son promote her after her death. As for Ruyi, there were little to none information about her. She's not even buried with him. Looks like the only empress that he really cared for was the first empress.

I don't think she was the manipulative person we saw in the drama (Yanxi Palace) though. I will gladly watch this on repeat--specifically to watch Rongpei bitchslap a bitch. Only regret that empress Dowager wasn't just tricking Ling into confession with the sole intention of turning her over to Ruyi. Spare Ruyi the agony.
