Due to wife's medical problems I'm missing my forge progress but planning better days ahead.
Always you are my favorite teacher
Thanks
Goodluck to you and your wife.
She’s lots more important than a forge, but we’ll pray for you both.
I finally pulled the trigger on the Viking set. Overall cost without butcher tool and with shipping is $43. Should be here tomorrow can’t wait to get started
I'm glad you made this video because yesterday I was hammer on a peice of spring steel and because I didnt have these tongs it flew up and stabbed me in the face. I will be buying a pair of these shortly.
Looking like a handy dandy kit or package.
Love seeing your process!
Hurry up next week!
I wanna see his Vikings Knife!
Blessed days
Crawford out 🙏🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
I made my brother a pair of lifting tongs for his foundry furnace (meant to grip a round crucible) and I almost messed it up because of needing to bend them in opposite directions. Good thing all I had to do was reheat and resend the end of one side. It was a good learning experience though. Thanks for passing along your knowledge. God Bless.
Many thanks for the Tip with the Pre manufactured Tongs. For the first selfmade Tongs is much more easy. Thanks
Bought the Viking knife bundle from them. Told them you sent me :)
OMG, how have I spent my adult life not knowing about this craft?
I got a few pair of these back when I first started out. Good workable tongs. Great watching your take on making them. Very helpful to a beginner or even a seasoned maker. Thanks John!
Thank you sir for inspiring me to get out there again.
Happy to kens products seeing more airtime! Just bought a bundle from him earlier this week
Another great video :). I learned a lot of techniques from you over the years. You are one of my inspirations that made me to start blacksmithing.
I am looking forward to see your version of the Viking knife.
Thank you and have a great evening. :)
Kens is just up the road from me. Great people great products. Shame that all those Chinese bootleggers are ripping off his tong designs.
I probably wouldn't be that angry about it except for the fact that they try to pass it off as his product with links to his videos on how to make them.
Iam new to all this but i will buying from ken very soon
@@Peter-od7op You'll enjoy making Ken's tongs, not just because you'll have a set of tongs when you're done but actually making them is pretty fun too. The nice thing about them is that getting stock to the right shape and size is the hardest part of making tongs, and that's pretty much already done for you. You're free to do just the necessities to make tongs, or you can spend time customizing them however you like. Start with the flat jaw tongs and size the jaws to your other tongs, so making the rest is easier. The rest of the tongs are just preference but the flat jaws are the perfect tongs to make the other tongs. After you're done it's easy to resize the flat jaw tongs to whatever stock you want or keep them that size if you wish.
@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper ty so much for reply. My 16 year old and myself ty
@@Peter-od7op Of course, good luck!
Looks like a very nice set, and good for any time you're working with flat stock. I use box jaw tongs for a lot of flat work, but having a set like that would be very handy when working with scrolls so the curve can bypass the hand, allowing you to get up close to where you'll be working at on the bar.
That's cool, I was already thinking about ordering that kit from Kens Custom Iron, just as a beginner project to see if I'm up to the task. Now, I know I'm going to order it. Thanks for the video.
Ken is the best. Awesome quality and the price is right. A little creativity and you can make any tongs you need out of his blanks.
Just ordered a set, perfect timing as my next big project was going to be a blacksmith's knife, looking forward to the next video!
I absolutely love Ken's custom iron. Great quality products, affordable prices and they are quick resolve any problem that may arise.
Great video. Always well explained. And your camera angles always show enough of what your doing. No OV’’s
Nice to see you vrom Germany Jens

Another great video! As a note, I have purchased several items from Ken's Iron, good stuff and knowledgeable people.
All ways enjoy watching you making tongs John some thing different every time . :)
Super handy tongs for knives and flat bar.👍
You are a true inspiration. I love your videos. Thank you☺️
Handy flat stock tongs. Thank you for your work sir.👏
I really enjoy your videos!
Thanks!
I think your videos on forging are the best I've found you tube. I have learned alot from you thanks and keep up the great work that you do.
Wow, thanks!
Excellent design, John! 🐾🔥⚒👍
Thanks 👍
really amazing dear i love this work
I will have to try a set with long jaws like that, I usually make mine with a much shorter jaw.
Jaws design is awesome.Give firm grip on stock. Looking forward to viking knife. It was originally designed by a Dutch smith Thijs Van se Manakjer in 80s.👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thijs van de Manakker is an amazing blacksmith, check out "forging a celtic spearhead"on UA-cam if you havent seen it yet.
@@bortgov8624 Thanks for sharing. I will definitely check out that video
LOL I own this blank.. totally need to make them. (I find kens custom is totally eaiser than from scratch)
Dussack made as early 1500's also call a lady's house knife thanks for sharing blessings to you and your family 🙏 stay safe
p.s I made over 20 of these knife's
nice set of tongs have to check it out
I'm always a little perplexed at how you find the center of the boss for the rivet hole.
I generally do it by eye. It takes practice but it can be learned. Otherwise you can measure across the boss.
I just bought 2 tongs at a garage sale today for $5. So proud of myself. Cant make them for that! 😂
Nice!!
Хорошая работа !!
i believe the type of knife in question is called both a viking knife and a ladies' knife because during the viking age women in nordic countries would carry such a knife as a daily-use tool. it's simple, effective, cheap, and compact.
So I have been blacksmithing for about 2 weeks now. Normally for an hour or 2 after work. I have made a couple S-hooks and I bought the tong bundle. I did the Flat jaw tongs last weekend and im working on the slotjaw tongs now. I'm having the problem that when I'm drawing the reins out they start to twist. Any pointers? Am I trying to draw out to much material at once or is it something else. It starts twisting when I'm about to transition from square to octagon. Thanks
I would love to be an apprentice blacksmith to a master but I don't know anyone that does it so I try to learn from ur videos as much as I can.
John, you love using your power hammer and I understand why. Could a treadle hammer be used the same way?
Yes but its much slower and will wear you out faster
Not too interested in the knife world myself, but I'm sold anyway. I will be interested to know how to temper W1 steel.
I'd like to see you use your induction forge more, so I can see the types of things it can be used for. Drawing out the reins seems like it might be a good use...
I do plan to use it more videos
love your videos, learning a lot , But Kens shipping prices make his product more expensive than buying the same thing on Amazon.
Those blanks sure takes the work out of forming a boss and hinge! How long did you draw the reigns out to.
I didn't measure but not much. Just making them more comfortable.
So would JB weld work in a forge welding application? If one couldn’t afford a welder to tack a billet together
I seriously doubt it. But you can bailing wire a billet together.
@@BlackBearForge didn’t think about that, I have some bailing wire.. thanks for the advice
Love these tongs and this is a great video, but I do think your intro got cut short
I've seen that a couple other times in videos uploaded today. I've also noticed the sound cuts out a couple seconds before the video ends. Maybe UA-cam is having issues.
Alrighty, then. Love your videos. It's almost like having personal instruction from an experience smith. BUT, here's a dumb question from a newbie hobbiest: Why the offset? Wouldn't the grip be stronger if the jaws lined up with the reins?
The offset allows material to pass along side the joint and reins for better control of longer stock
@@BlackBearForge thank you.
I figure, your camera issue could be solved with a medical style pendant that is mounted high but is able to swivle..similar to a vocal boom or industrial lamp stand...similar to a dentistry office capability...?three segments adjustable and locking, that works off a main adjustable socket...of course hand smithed would definitely look a little steam punked but artistic...
HELLO FROM LITTLE PATUXENT FORGE WHERE CAN I GET A PAIR OF THESE TONGS
There is a link near the top of the video description.
