- In this video I'm going to show how to fix a Milwaukee Crown Stapler.
The unit won't fire staples and just makes a noise, if you have this problem, then this video is for you!
I'll show you how to disassemble the unit, diagnose the problem, and hopefully repair it!
If you need to refill, the adapter I use is 1/8" BSP

@@BuyitFixit i have a m18 9inch cut off saw that packed in. Its kinda way past repairable now after me tinkering, i would like to see you get to the bottom of one of those.. warning though, on mine every board had yellow gunk on it..
@@mtl1100 I have a feeling they might be similar to the mitre saw. It seems the brake mosfet blows and feeds power back into the microcontroller/motor driver chip which then fails. You can check this by keep pressing the trigger and see if the chip starts getting very warm. Unfortunately you can't get those chips DRV91670 I think it was.
So I just bought the Metabo 18g cordless because they have an access panel to the schreider valve and you can fill it up yourself using an accessory hookup that lets the air into the gun. But before you do that there is a procedure to put the nail gun into maintenance mode which lowers the driving pin so you can fill the chamber with air. I’m wondering if Milwaukee also must have a maintenance mode??

I'm very happy. because my 18gauge nailer gun keeps jamming and stops firing. In Mongolia, there is no Milwaukee store, and there is no repair shop. But I just managed to fix it. I took it from my salary for one month without telling my wife lol. Thank you for your post

Thanks for making the Milwaukee Stapler Repair video. I have several Milwaukee M18 Nailers, so It's a real help. However the Grease to use is Silicone Grease because Petroleum based Grease can destroy the o rings.

Bit late to the party I know but must say well done fella. You’re the only chap I’ve found that actually stripped one of these down. I currently own the 15 gauge and loved it so much I’ve just brought the 18 gauge. I like to service my guns but moving from the flywheel dewalts to these gas driven nailers i was thinking it will have to be a send in back job. I work on my PCP’s so I’m not scared of a bit of pressure so I’ll definitely have a go when the time comes I think. 👍🏼

The simple science behind it is that the nitrogen molecules are a little larger then the other molecules in air so it's less likely to leak out. It doesn't change how the unit functions after all air is 78% nitrogen anyway. Good video as always. Nice fix.

I'm not sure if I put anything in the video description, I did with the framing nailer which is a very similar repair. I used a PCP air rifle stirrup pump which can be found on Amazon for about £40
I only got 2 years of medium duty use out of this stapler. Ill be doing this repair so hopefully it works

The anticipation when you press that nozzle for the gas had me on edge lol. Again out of gas.
Yeah seems a common issue. I think it must slowly escape over time.
It may have leak pass the dry Seals

Thanks 👍The pump I used is for a PCP air rifle. It can get up to high pressures. For this nail gun you might be able to use another pump as it doesn't need to go as high as this pump will go.
Please say socket head cap screws - allen key is the L shaped tool sometimes used to install and remove them.

If you get the opportunity do a Dewalt cordless stapler, I've replaced mine with the model that your working on in this video already. My Dewalt was barely used but never worked right, intermittent firing not sinking staples & ridiculous wind up & down times
I think my son had one, I remember it whirring for a bit before firing the staples with not a lot of force, or it might have been the brad nail gun. It didn't seem that good either way.
If it is rubber seals,lithium grease is better as it won't rot the rubber like normal grease !

Milwaukee has a massive flaw. And u showed it. Which if it wasnt for you making these fix videos id have bough the Milwaukee. Went with ryobi cuz they have an external fill port and use reg air.

Great video!! I watched your other one on the the 16gauge nail gun. I have a 23 gauge pin nailer which won’t drive the nails flush. I’ve tried the adjustment and it just won’t sink them. Wondering what the issue could be?
It might well need a bit more pressure in it, the only other thing I could think is if the adjustment sensor had some how moved and wasn't in the right position.
Great to see how easy they are repaired, but what a faff to get to the valve. Is it possible to rotate the cylinder 180 degrees and have the valve come out the top of the gun for easier access for future re-gas?
Thanks 👍I'm not sure if you could rotate the cylinder, but it's not something that should need a re-gas very often, if at all (only if it's leaking).

Hi Mike, no it's still working fine, although I've only used it a few times.
I fill my 18ga milwaukee with 160 psi. I found a dewalt cordless tire inflator that max out at 160 psi and it works like a dream for a couple months. At around 100 psi i have to refill it to 160 psi
Sounds like it may need a new set of seals on the piston. Perhaps check the cylinder for wear also. You might be able to smooth any scores out with a fine grade wet and dry sandpaper.
How do you find that tool to blow air?

I have the same tool gun, but my problem is when I fire it kicks back and/or the staples don’t go completely in. I have adjusted the depth. I have send multiple guns(same model) to Milwaukee but they can’t even seem to get things right when they send it back to me. I usually have it set on the fast option. Do you have an idea of what it can be?
Sorry, nothing springs to mind. What happens if you apply pressure to the top of the tool (above where the staples come out) when using it? The only other thing I could think is possibly not enough pressure, but if it's kicking back it sounds like it's not being pressed with enough force against the thing you are stapling?

Could be something jamming it? You would need to take it apart probably and have a look.

Mine is turning on but does nit strike or make any noise , has enough air in tank , any ideas?
Hi Branislav Glavic. I think if the tank was completely empty it would not make any noise.
Does it still work after 3 months no leaks I would’ve thought Milwaukee could’ve said something on the manual about customer self repair but I believe they said to send it to them to get a repair but after the limited time you’ll have to pay them to send it to a near repair center that sucks they could’ve made it easier and add a external refilling portion . As these tool is not so cheap more if we use it rarely😂
Yes still works fine. I've not used it much though so I can't really say if it would need refilling with more usage. Milwaukee fill them with nitrogen apparently for consistency in hot and cold environments, air is 78% nitrogen. You can get nitrogen refilling kits on Ebay for air conditioners but air seems to work just fine.

The tank (usually filled with nitrogen) had lost pressure. I refilled it with compressed air (79% nitrogen) to around 110psi

Just 1/8 BSP I'm fairly sure. Dont worry about centre pin as pressure will just open the valve.
Greetings: I am totally unfamiliar with air rifle components so could you describe the fitting setup you are using to charge the Milwaukee pneumatic cartridge? It appears that a female Schrader fitting would be required to do the job. Please advise ~ thanks!

@@BuyitFixit Yes, I did but it remained unclear as to the correct fitting being used. As I mentioned, I am not familiar with air rifles and related hardware. So, what fitting is compatible with the Milwaukee "dashpot" fitting? I think you mentioned a 1/4" ASA but that isn't a fitting that I am familiar with. CGA fittings, Swagelok, VCO style are what I have used previously. Cheers!
The fitting I used was a 1/8" bsp thread coupler. I already had the rifle pump which goes up to 2000psi so that's why I used it. You don't have to worry about pressing the centre pin as the air will just force the valve open. I think some people have had success with bicycle pumps that do quite high pressures, might be worth having a scroll through some of the comments as I'm not too sure on what they used. Hope that helps.
@@BuyitFixit Hello again: Do you think BSP was used on your tools since they were probably sold in the U.K.? I live in the States and doubt I could find many BSP fittings here! Since I believe the MIlwaukee tools are made in Tiawan I am surprised that they aren't metric. Regardless, your 2 videos on the framing and stapler were excellent! Regards,

actually how much PSI is the air pressure m18 fuel 18GA finish nailer boss?
I think I've answered this before in the comments, bit I think its around 90 psi. You can always add a little bit more if you find it's not powerful enough and not risk damaging it by too much pressure.

Can you use wd40 instead of grease? Or machine oil?
I wouldn't have thought so as WD40 isn't a lubricant. Oil perhaps but someone said in another comment that lithium grease might be better as it shouldn't rot the seals.
@@BuyitFixit hmm, wd40 is used as a lubricant though. Especially for squeaky hinges and for bikes gears. But its probably best to get grease as you did.
@@wherami A few people I know always said it's not really a lubricant but I just did a search and it is, although probably not the best for this job.

Originally pure nitrogen. Air works fine as its 78% nitrogen anyway.

Indeed! I doubt it really makes a ton of difference just filling it with air compared to pure nitrogen.

I did buy a Milwaukee one-key one..however everything is potted in hard epoxy resin so they don't seem to be very repairable
@@BuyitFixit oh you mean like where the circuitry and brushless motor control stuff is? I hate that they do it like that. Kobalt does it too at least on their 80 vol tools. Turns what could be a simple repair into destroying it way worse trying to get into it.
Also I found It to be strange wording whe you said spares and repairs. I thought maybe I had been missing out on a lot of good deals on eBay because I've always known it to be for parts or repair. But when I typed it in it was all like United Kingdom stuff so I don't know if that's intentional so you only get results from your own country or if that's just a cultural thing as far as the wording
@@bradbradleys6091 The whole entire circuit on the drill including the mosfets is in the handle and all encased in hard epoxy. Literally only a switch and a few wires going to the motor is what isn't in epoxy.

This one seems complicated to repair for nothing. Just my opinion.👍👍
One of my most popular videos was the Milwaukee nail gun as it's a common problem. I still get a lot of thanks for that one as it's helped a lot of people repair their nail gun. This one was a very similar fix apart from the pressure isn't as great in the cylinder, so hopefully it will help someone with the same problem.

The H280 is a so called "Hazard Phrase", stating that the equipment contains pressurised gas. "Contains gas under pressure: may explode if heated"

Using nitrogen makes sense as it is inert and also commonly used for hydraulic pressure buffers.
I don't quite understand the purpose of that gas reservoir, though. Is it something that's used as a spring? Or does it deplete in normal operation?
I actually would have expected an air reservoir and an electrical pump that charges pressure for accelarating the staples out of the stapler. 🤔

Thanks👍It's being used as a spring. The motor ratchets the piston back and there is a solenoid that releases it when firing🙂
