If you’ve played Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum, you have heard this song so many times. Perhaps hundreds of times if you frequented places like the Battle Tower or the Battle Frontier! Sinnoh’s battle themes are some of my favorite in the entire Pokémon series, and they certainly have that sort of “Masuda magic” to them.
This may surprise you, but Battle themes have actually been some of the hardest tunes for me to cover. Because of the way that Junichi Masuda’s writing is extremely melodic and not super harmonically intricate, I’ve had a hard time adding my own spin onto his music. When I was presented with the opportunity to write something for this bunch of musicians in the Sinnoh Fusion Ensemble, though, I knew this would be a great opportunity to take on one of the battle themes I’ve most wanted to cover but had the hardest time figuring out how I wanted to: the Trainer Battle theme! Similar to what I did on my previous Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald album, I added in one of my favorite trainer encounter themes in the beginning, and also added the Victory theme at the end!
To beef up the arrangement a bit, I decided to add two really big solo spots. The first is a huge violin shred feature for one of my best friends at Berklee, Emily Gelineau! She appeared in my Wii Music video, and is back as part of the Sinnoh Fusion Ensemble on electric violin, which adds such a nice top end texture to the band! She has a gargantuan shred solo smack dab in the middle of this tune, and absolutely nails it! The second solo spot is a “percussion battle” between percussionist Ricky Matute and drummer Francis Peña. I know that these dudes are super bros so I wanted to try and pit them against each other in a crazy rhythmic battle to see what would happen! Thematically, I think this section is super cool, since, you know… this song is a trainer battle theme, and dueling solos are essentially the musical equivalent to a trainer battle!
I hope you dig this new, aggressive arrangement from the Sinnoh Fusion Ensemble! Lots more to come in the future!

@@darkmariofans That really would be the dream. Toby Fox however, is much more well known than Carlos, and he only composed one song, so it's very unlikely. But it would be so awesome.

Haha, I don't know if I could have shred as hard as Emily on this... I wanted to use the videos with these people to give everybody a chance to shine, I don't know if my own solos are necessarily always the best thing for a piece, but I'll keep this comment in mind for the future!

Jã Marcos yeah, same here, I can’t wait to see or play the Diamond&Pearl Remakes but I’m genuinely terrified that they will disappoint me in such a horrible way and destroy my childhood, because Pearl and especially Platinum were my childhood and I have so many fond memories of the games being so good damn excellent
William you can’t compare a brand new game to a remake that just won’t do. That’s like comparing XY with ORAS. They are two separate entities. A remake is, u like the original, not brand new. It’s an old idea with a fresh coat of paint.
In summation, 2019 is the best year because of this channel. Great arrangement!

Nostalgic Essay time again: Oh you're doing the spotted themes and not just the actual battle themes that's crazy, man! The spotted themes never really stuck with me my first playthrough because I was an impatient kid and all but on my most recent playthrough I noticed them and gave some of them a listen, and despite them being short loops, they are super nice to listen to. I also love the energy in this piece, it really captures how a Pokemon battle would be if you didn't just take turns and it was in real time. That's what I think anyway. And that victory theme at the end really made me smile. Another short loop that is real nice. It didn't need to end with that but it felt so right. There's some real nostalgia in this vid.
I didn't even know this Spotted Theme had a second half to it (the part with the violin melody!) They're such good themes
@@insaneintherainmusic They're great to just listen to once in a while because half the time I forget they exist. And the parts with the violin in this medley just kinda made me stop everything I was doing and just be amazed. And all I was doing was watching the video. It blew me away, especially since in middle school the band and orchestra were separate and I never really got to see what string instruments could do. Orchestra and band were together in highschool but I couldn't take it due to scheduling and now here I am in college with the musical talent if an eighth grader who honestly wasn't even that good back then.

Twinleaf town and the medley are very close almost tied but I liked the guitar in Twinleaf Town a bit more than the violin.

I’m starting to notice how a lot of your YoS covers feature specific unique instruments; Twinleaf being a standard sax feature, Route 201 busting out the EWI, Old Chateau with both the theremin and bass clarinet, Route 228 with a killer sousaphone part, and this having a large violin focus. It’s really good stuff!
I guess that's just how my arranging brain is working right now!

I loved it, but there is one thing I found missing (and of course, rearranging will change some things). Around 2:15 there is a segment in the original that has great percussions, and those seem to not have made the cut, and my nostalgia feels their absence.

honestly this theme is soo much better than the official one. I am actually so mad that they did not reach out to you for at least some sort of involvement with the official remakes. Oh well I guess its time to learn how to mod games and add it there myself...
I think DPPT's battle theme is great due in most part by nostalgia, as it was fairly simple from a musical standpoint. But this, this adds the technicality that elevates the song above being great. Fantastic shit!

Carlos' be flexin his hot tenor sax. He has insane tone, music knowledge, an extremely wide range (for tenor sax, his range is insane), and has really fancy handwork. Ur the best tenor I've seen on anything.
