Same here, I never had voice chat and yet I play games like Battlefield which is a team based game that voice chat is a must but I don't have voice chat so I just play like any player is supposed to: like a team, hell im pretty much one of the few people that actually plays like a team while others who have voice chat just talk shit to eachother.

Jimmy Neutron I'm no Xbox or PS fanboy (profile pic) but Wii U's games are very cartoony thus taking much less processing power to run. Wii U would probably catch on fire trying to process a PS4 game (let's take the Order for example) at 1080p 60 fps. Heck, Project CARS was just cancelled for the Wii U because the devs could only get 720p 23 fps o_o.

Game is linear as hell, 2-4 hours long, is half QTE, and *_still_* needs letterboxing in order to even do *30fps* (because the PS4 can't handle it at a full 1920x1080). One thing that i don't understand. I've played in the global test fire's, and didn't experience lag in any of my matches. How come splatoon online system is it this good (assuming it will be as good as when the game comes out) while in other games like smash bros i struggle to find a match that "at least doesn't lag too much"?
Gabriel Killmann Splatoon uses servers to host their matches. Smash uses point to point connection. In other words, if you have shotty connection, or the person your fighting does, the match mat experience lag

This idea is about as strange as a plumber stomping on brown mushrooms and turtles and punching blocks to find different mushrooms to consume and grow larger in his quest to defeat a giant turtle monster that kidnapped the princess. If only Nintendo made that game...

i pre-ordered this game as i played the demo and had a lot of fun, i hope the free DLC comes out soon as only 2 online modes to start is a bit weak with 5 maps but i know they said 2 more modes a several maps are coming, not to mention ability to play with friends.
Now I'm really excited for game! And it already comes out in... wait, two days?? cool :D and they were really careful with the ink colors. No sperm, blood or shit ink. I just don't know what the exact reason for black is. Maybe it would be a reminder of Deepwater Horizon or somethng.
Are the Turf War and Splat Zones modes only available for online multiplayer or can you play them in local multiplayer as well? Sorry if you answered this in another video, I didn't watch the Q&A one. Also if there is multiplayer are the pro controller the only other alternative besides the gamepad?
Sadly I was only able to play the testfire for half an hour (thanks Nintendo for only having the demo at certain (inconvenient) times) and that wasn't enough time to convince me on this game. Maybe if the price goes down and more content gets added I'll consider it, but right now I'm not interested.
SuperThobal If you're on the fence, waiting won't hurt. By the time the price comes down, all the content will have been added, so you'll get the game at a lower price and more on the disc.
Well you're going to have to wait a while for a price drop man, Nintendo exclusives stay at full price for a while, shit Smash Brothers Brawl JUST went down to $30 new and I saw Mario Galaxy for $40 new.

But yeah, if you're on a budget, in a way Nintendo is a bad console for you, cause the prices of their games are known to hold out for some time. But thanks to various stores and online sites and used copies, it's not that hard to come across a fair price. Little sad Nintendo Selects was a one off thing. It was so brilliant, take old/surplus 1st party Nintendo games and re-release them for 20$ Would never have picked up Twilight Princess if it wasn't for Nintendo Selects.
Great review, I was just wondering how you felt about the lack of 4 player split-screen mode. Do you feel like it needed to be included? Right now it feels like a missed opportunity to me, much like the lack of any battle arenas in Mario Kart 8.

It's funny that people considered the Roller underpowered, but when you use it for ambush or camp strategies,it murders the team. It's probably underrated due to the 1 hour test demos not being enough time to make it work. Some Japanese players have been getting 15:0 ratios or more using this thing. You just paint a wall and hang on it, camp at their spawn with Kraken Special, etc. This weapon gives you so much special meter. We'll have to wait until everyone gets their hands on the game to see this strategy running wild I guess. It seems really strong for someone to push at the enemy spawn with since you gain so much meter from just moving to them and less down time to refill ink. You can keep enemies away from your team while they cover the map.
Did you know that the squid jump is really similar to the warp jump in nintendo land. Its similar because in nintendo land when you go into 1st person mode and tap the symbol of the game you want to go to and you warp jump to that area, similarly to the squid jump then you tap a teammate 's icon
After completing the solo campaign and finally reaching level 20, I can happily say that this review resonates with me 100%. So now, my personal review of Splatoon is: same as André.
Sadly, I know IGNorgant will try to attack this game as much as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if they spent a full minute speaking about voice-chat.
another thing I would have found really noteworthy is the lack of option to be matched with friends/private lobbies while they announced that this will be added later on, I feel like this of the many promised modes is one that should be there day one and not several month down the line Still seems to be a great game, but I can definately see how this could be a good reason to delay ones purchase by a few month

Which, if you buy both in one you get 10 shy guy skins and 10 yoshi skins for free. Now in total you get 6 new characters, 2 new cups (8 tracks) and 6 new karts (wheels, the kart, and glider) All for £12. COD dlc? You get what 4 new maps and guns? For how much £30? Mario kart 8 DLC (along with the rest of their dlc) started after the games release. CODS dlc is most of the time availavle day one, on disc. Do you see why people don't mind nintendo doing dlc now?
So far the only gripe I have with this game is that you can't change the button layout. Like... I wish I could assign activating your special move to a different button. Pressing down the stick feels awkward and it doesn't always work right in a hectic battle. L doesn't do anything, B doesn't do anything so why can't I push those buttons instead?
CodeNameZ The nickelodeon artstyle, the music, the gameplay in which you constantly have to hold ZR to shoot, the Amiibo-DLC.. It just doesn't appeal to me.

Phew! I'm glad Splatoon doesn't seem to have any further shortcomings beyond what we already knew. I preordered this game because the Testfire was a lot of fun and I've been itching for a shooter with something different than the standard shooter fair. I only hope that I end up loving it just as much as you.

DeadMasterGG So far, there is only one local multiplayer mode... Battle Mojo (1 vs 1), where you have to shoot balloons to beat your opponent. Quite disappointing, but maybe there are more modes coming with the free DLC. I would say (if your brother is not interested in playing online), wait a little bit and see if they add new offline modes.

I actually managed to get all 3 amiibo for this, pre ordered the game + squid bundle as I'm in the UK, and managed to get pre orders on both amiibo. Should be delivered tomorrow and I'M HYPED.
I know that Custom rooms are coming out around August, but that's kind of ridiculous for a game that mainly advertised it's online multiplayer. I'm still picking up the game as soon as I can, though.
I'm just glad the updates are free, because there are plenty of companies that would sell you an incomplete game and have you pay extra to make it complete. So it sounds like Splatoon is pretty fun at launch, with even more to come during the summer.
The way Nintendo is continuing to support Splatoon with weekly updates, and with a splatfest event next weekend even, is something i am a huge fan of, having something fresh to try every few days is awesome.
Good review Andre, although I have to disagree with chargers only being useful in splat zones. During my sessions with all 4 global test fires I helped won matches 90% of the time while usually being mvp with the most points. One of the most versatile weapon classes of the game if used correctly. I'm looking very much forward to showing everyone I play against online to think twice about going head to head with my charger! :3
Im actually SO happy that voice chat was left out. I mean like, it SOUNDS like a great idea, but the last thing I need is some 12 year old racist/sexist/homophobic kid trying to make fun of me. And also, since this game is actually targeted to what seems to be any general age group unlike COD, that means many children will play it. So voice chat may actually make it unsafe for kids because of mean adults that don't know how to act appropriatly around children. And Nintendo is a company that likes to keep things family friendly.

I think Battle Dojo should a online multiplayer mode later on and include 2 on 2, 3 on 3 & 4 on 4 teams battles, but only include if it's popluar and if people want it a online mode and include teams. Plus maybe include Battle Dojo to Turf Wars like have the balloons appear in random places and if one team member hits it, it will explode with their colour ink and cover the surrounding area. ;)
Do you think there might some calculations involved in the 'random' matches up of Turf War? I feel that there probably is. And I feel that the calculation involves the weapon load-outs of the currents members in the lobby. If there are 6 people with rollers I think the game would try to put 3 on one side and 3 on the other, which 3 might be random, but I feel there is a higher probability of it being 3 rollers per side than 4 and 2. Changing weapons last second could handicap a team. That is my thought on why the developers would have you exit out of the lobby when changing weapons. Even still, it does seem a little annoying if you want to keep the current lobby.
one more comment, that smiley face at the end of the video is soooo high on love like you wouldn't believe man. oh so that's what Andre actually looks like when he adores certain games. I'm so glad this game is reviewed as a good game, I've been contemplating whether or not to get it because I just love the idea and the new flavour for the third person shooter genre, but now I'm sold.
Jeremy Kingsley They have a lot og gameplay from the different modes, if your still not 100% you should check that out to get a better feel of the game.
I have high hopes for this game, even though I shouldn't hold such expectations for a game coming out (since Sonic Boom let down a number of people). But Im glad Splatoon looks, plays and feels great! Looking forward to May 29th.
I guess the fact that it only has a few maps and getting more in updates is because they wouldn't want to delay it. Zelda's delayed and they don't have a summer release game for the Wii U (unless I'm wrong). Star Fox is coming who-knows-when. It was probably just to keep people happy between bigger releases than this, but it's a shame they had to release an "unfinished game" as some people put it. It doesn't really matter to me because I wouldn't have gotten it till later, but I feel bad for the people that were hyped for it.
spot on dude, I agree with all the positives and would like to add one negative. I'd like a custom button mapping option. My WII pad doesn't have the best right bumper and I gotta wonder how tough it would be to also make the left bumper shoot the special equipments or to let you redo the control scheme to your liking.
I wonder what kind of audience they're targeting with this game though. This game does not really appeal to me personally (haven't played it yet, just from what I've seen from it), while I do like both shooters (Battlefield, Destiny) and Nintendo games (mainly Super Smash and Mario Kart). I think what bothers me the most is that it does not seem to be very intense or competitive (and therefore not something that people would play for a long time), although I may be wrong about that. Is it primarily for the fans of Nintendo to get something new and fresh or what's your opinion on this?

Voice chat would have been nice, but after playing it, it really doesn't feel like it needs it. But being able to join a party, and play with those same people ... that's something that Nintendo needs to get on, like, yesterday. Xbox Live parties were a brilliant idea, and that was last gen. Mii Parties should be a thing already.
Remember that TF2 was realeased with 6 maps on full price.

One thing that i don't understand. I've played in the global test fire's, and didn't experience lag in any of my matches. How come splatoon online system is it this good (assuming it will be as good as when the game comes out) while in other games like smash bros i struggle to find a match that "at least doesn't lag too much"?
Gabriel Killmann Splatoon uses servers to host their matches. Smash uses point to point connection. In other words, if you have shotty connection, or the person your fighting does, the match mat experience lag

i pre-ordered this game as i played the demo and had a lot of fun, i hope the free DLC comes out soon as only 2 online modes to start is a bit weak with 5 maps but i know they said 2 more modes a several maps are coming, not to mention ability to play with friends.
Now I'm really excited for game! And it already comes out in... wait, two days?? cool :D and they were really careful with the ink colors. No sperm, blood or shit ink. I just don't know what the exact reason for black is. Maybe it would be a reminder of Deepwater Horizon or somethng.

Sadly I was only able to play the testfire for half an hour (thanks Nintendo for only having the demo at certain (inconvenient) times) and that wasn't enough time to convince me on this game. Maybe if the price goes down and more content gets added I'll consider it, but right now I'm not interested.

Metroid M is now 5$ or less. But yeah, if you're on a budget, in a way Nintendo is a bad console for you, cause the prices of their games are known to hold out for some time.

Great review, I was just wondering how you felt about the lack of 4 player split-screen mode. Do you feel like it needed to be included? Right now it feels like a missed opportunity to me, much like the lack of any battle arenas in Mario Kart 8.

It's funny that people considered the Roller underpowered, but when you use it for ambush or camp strategies,it murders the team. It's probably underrated due to the 1 hour test demos not being enough time to make it work.
Some Japanese players have been getting 15:0 ratios or more using this thing. You just paint a wall and hang on it, camp at their spawn with Kraken Special, etc. This weapon gives you so much special meter.
We'll have to wait until everyone gets their hands on the game to see this strategy running wild I guess. It seems really strong for someone to push at the enemy spawn with since you gain so much meter from just moving to them and less down time to refill ink. You can keep enemies away from your team while they cover the map.

Did you know that the squid jump is really similar to the warp jump in nintendo land. Its similar because in nintendo land when you go into 1st person mode and tap the symbol of the game you want to go to and you warp jump to that area, similarly to the squid jump then you tap a teammate 's icon

So now, my personal review of Splatoon is: same as André.
Sadly, I know IGNorgant will try to attack this game as much as possible.
I wouldn't be surprised if they spent a full minute speaking about voice-chat.

A fair comparison for dlc between the two would be mario kart 8 dlc or hyrul warriors dlc.. Now lets examine them shall we? Mario kart 8 dlc, you get two packs for 12 quid bundled together. Which, if you buy both in one you get 10 shy guy skins and 10 yoshi skins for free. Now in total you get 6 new characters, 2 new cups (8 tracks) and 6 new karts (wheels, the kart, and glider) All for £12. COD dlc? You get what 4 new maps and guns? For how much £30?
Mario kart 8 DLC (along with the rest of their dlc) started after the games release. CODS dlc is most of the time availavle day one, on disc.
Do you see why people don't mind nintendo doing dlc now?

So far the only gripe I have with this game is that you can't change the button layout. Like... I wish I could assign activating your special move to a different button. Pressing down the stick feels awkward and it doesn't always work right in a hectic battle.
L doesn't do anything, B doesn't do anything so why can't I push those buttons instead?

Phew! I'm glad Splatoon doesn't seem to have any further shortcomings beyond what we already knew. I preordered this game because the Testfire was a lot of fun and I've been itching for a shooter with something different than the standard shooter fair. I only hope that I end up loving it just as much as you.

Hi GameXplain,I was just wondering how are the local multiplayer modes, I didn't see them discussed in the review. Is it purely "deathmatch" or are there more fun modes? I preordered this game for my lil brother and just wondering if the game is worth getting if he doesn't really care for the online component? (the campaign is much shorter than I thought)
DeadMasterGG So far, there is only one local multiplayer mode... Battle Mojo (1 vs 1), where you have to shoot balloons to beat your opponent. Quite disappointing, but maybe there are more modes coming with the free DLC. I would say (if your brother is not interested in playing online), wait a little bit and see if they add new offline modes.

I actually managed to get all 3 amiibo for this, pre ordered the game + squid bundle as I'm in the UK, and managed to get pre orders on both amiibo. Should be delivered tomorrow and I'M HYPED.

So how do you play with friends in this game? I noticed you were playing with who I thought was Nintendaan, so that seems intentional.
I know that Custom rooms are coming out around August, but that's kind of ridiculous for a game that mainly advertised it's online multiplayer.

I'm just glad the updates are free, because there are plenty of companies that would sell you an incomplete game and have you pay extra to make it complete. So it sounds like Splatoon is pretty fun at launch, with even more to come during the summer.

Good review Andre, although I have to disagree with chargers only being useful in splat zones. During my sessions with all 4 global test fires I helped won matches 90% of the time while usually being mvp with the most points. One of the most versatile weapon classes of the game if used correctly.
I'm looking very much forward to showing everyone I play against online to think twice about going head to head with my charger! :3
Im actually SO happy that voice chat was left out. I mean like, it SOUNDS like a great idea, but the last thing I need is some 12 year old racist/sexist/homophobic kid trying to make fun of me. And also, since this game is actually targeted to what seems to be any general age group unlike COD, that means many children will play it. So voice chat may actually make it unsafe for kids because of mean adults that don't know how to act appropriatly around children.
And Nintendo is a company that likes to keep things family friendly.

I think Battle Dojo should a online multiplayer mode later on and include 2 on 2, 3 on 3 & 4 on 4 teams battles, but only include if it's popluar and if people want it a online mode and include teams. Plus maybe include Battle Dojo to Turf Wars like have the balloons appear in random places and if one team member hits it, it will explode with their colour ink and cover the surrounding area. ;)
Do you think there might some calculations involved in the 'random' matches up of Turf War? I feel that there probably is. And I feel that the calculation involves the weapon load-outs of the currents members in the lobby. If there are 6 people with rollers I think the game would try to put 3 on one side and 3 on the other, which 3 might be random, but I feel there is a higher probability of it being 3 rollers per side than 4 and 2. Changing weapons last second could handicap a team. That is my thought on why the developers would have you exit out of the lobby when changing weapons. Even still, it does seem a little annoying if you want to keep the current lobby.
Can't wait for the 29th! Going to pick up the game and all three amiboos and try to finish every mission on day one :D

I'm so glad this game is reviewed as a good game, I've been contemplating whether or not to get it because I just love the idea and the new flavour for the third person shooter genre, but now I'm sold.
Jeremy Kingsley They have a lot og gameplay from the different modes, if your still not 100% you should check that out to get a better feel of the game.
I'm extremely positive about it, I'm just torn between Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and Splatoon.
I have high hopes for this game, even though I shouldn't hold such expectations for a game coming out (since Sonic Boom let down a number of people). But Im glad Splatoon looks, plays and feels great! Looking forward to May 29th.

I guess the fact that it only has a few maps and getting more in updates is because they wouldn't want to delay it. Zelda's delayed and they don't have a summer release game for the Wii U (unless I'm wrong). Star Fox is coming who-knows-when. It was probably just to keep people happy between bigger releases than this, but it's a shame they had to release an "unfinished game" as some people put it. It doesn't really matter to me because I wouldn't have gotten it till later, but I feel bad for the people that were hyped for it.
spot on dude, I agree with all the positives and would like to add one negative. I'd like a custom button mapping option. My WII pad doesn't have the best right bumper and I gotta wonder how tough it would be to also make the left bumper shoot the special equipments or to let you redo the control scheme to your liking.

I wonder what kind of audience they're targeting with this game though.
This game does not really appeal to me personally (haven't played it yet, just from what I've seen from it), while I do like both shooters (Battlefield, Destiny) and Nintendo games (mainly Super Smash and Mario Kart).
I think what bothers me the most is that it does not seem to be very intense or competitive (and therefore not something that people would play for a long time), although I may be wrong about that.
Is it primarily for the fans of Nintendo to get something new and fresh or what's your opinion on this?

Voice chat would have been nice, but after playing it, it really doesn't feel like it needs it. But being able to join a party, and play with those same people ... that's something that Nintendo needs to get on, like, yesterday. Xbox Live parties were a brilliant idea, and that was last gen. Mii Parties should be a thing already.
