  • The Surge - The Surge is a union of Fallout's setting with Dark Souls-like action and exploration, and while the Surge makes some significant advancements in the 'Souls-Like' genre, it misses some crucial beats that seriously undermine the experience.
This review was conducted on PC (GTX 1080) whilst playing with a controller. I do not recommend playing on PC without a controller.

Skill Up just gets it, man. The bit about how cohesion of environment and world design is wonderful, but how adhering to theme so rigidly is paradoxically monotonous... and that there would be a way to achieve logical cohesion with thematic variety, especially in a sequel. "I hope there is a sequel that builds on The Surge" And that is exactly what happened. Surge 1 is a good start, it lays a fantastic foundation. But it just has so many aspects to it that turn it into an incredibly frustrating, difficult in a bad way and repetitive slog. The Surge 2 takes all the best elements of the first and expands upon them, then adds so many more great aspects. I'm absolutely loving The Surge 2 and am so glad they not only made a sequel, but pushed it to it's full potential.

Demon Souls may have used the formula first, but it was more of a prototype. Dark Souls then created a genre through polish and success. Think about it this way: If FromSoftware had never followed Demon Souls up with Dark Souls, do you think the genre would still exist the same way it does today? Do you think we would call it "Souls-Like"?

Huh, I hadn't really considered running past enemies. Guess that's an option too!
You do understand that enemies give you the resources you need to upgrade your gear right? :P Well, except for those goddamned 3-legged jumping bots...
Gotta say, I noticed you were using the 1st section 1-handed weapon in the last section of the game. That weapon has almost no damage, and has 'medium' proficiency scaling (so damage isn't even being upped much by your experience level with 1-handers). Given that, I'm not sure the complaint about doing 'no damage to enemies' in the last few sections of the game isn't... well, your own fault.
I see you swinging that chainsword at the first boss clones legs for 33 damage. It takes 100+ from any highly upgraded high-proficiency Single-Rigged weapon. And it's not like you're getting extra swings out of the 1-hander, because you have to back off after every swing to avoid getting stomped. Did you activate the chemical-damage injectable? That at least adds some damage to quick-hitting weapons, as its just a flat per-hit boost.
Your Rhino gear also isn't useful vs bosses. It's got reduced damage to armored opponents (not helpful) as a tradeoff to having increased impact - but bosses don't get staggered, and you're using a weapon with such low impact that even the rhino arms +60% impact is barely going to matter.
All-in-all, I really like your review, much as I really like the game. I believe though that you screwed yourself with your gear choices. To attempt a Dark Souls analogy: you're having late-game difficulties because you never realized you could talk to a blacksmith.
DId that work? Honestly I dunno, this is my first soulslike game (PC gamer here).

The 3-legged jump bots do give one progression related thing. If you break their top-arm, they drop Ancillary Core implants. These implants GIVE you Core Power when equipped.
Not exactly a form of gear upgrade, but it does let you mount implants/gear you wouldn't normally be able to.

No competition? Haha, ACG gives this guy a run for his money. Not that this wasn't a decent review, but I feel like I got a fraction of the content for double the time investment. ACG could have said all this and way more in a 15min video. I also hate how he said he wouldn't compare this game to Dark Souls, but then immediately started comparing it to other games that are completely different. I get WHY he did it, but he could have made the same point without bringing up those other games at all and avoided the needlessly wasted time talking about games I didn't come here to hear about.

I dunno, in comparison to Sekiro and Bloodborne, The Surge felt clunky to me in certain mechanics of combat, while in other ways it felt good.
After spending the time to Platinum it and get all the parts and weapons, I think the developers were a fan of not only Souls-borne, but also Armored Core. I wish there was less incentive to have a single set compared to mixing sets. Pretty solid review, but I think you missed out on the small note of how the bosses can reward V.2 weapons for killing them in specific ways. For example, the fourth boss, the Black Cerberus guard would drop the V2 version of his weapon and have a much easier fight if you used the PAX's main cannon to destroy the two big white cylinders.

At this point in time I've played through The Surge so many times its not funny, its just sad. The only thing I think that most reviewers are getting wrong is the whole "trash mobs" thing as there actually aren't any. Every single enemy in the game can be taken on in a one on one confrontation and that is kind of a key part of success in the game. Some of them you have to wait out their walking routes, others you have lure over to another location but there is always a way. Don't rush in to combat and if possible make them come to you. Once you get this you can see that its what makes this gamed excellent combat system really shine. The system is designed for single combat not mobs. Approaching this game like a hack and slash is asking for a quick death.

Yea i agree with this. Apart from some of the nanite things. Also you can beat the Black Cerebus in one Pax. Guess that's not immediately obvious but the way I saw it you weren't meant to fight out the whole thing. But yea quite often the drone helps control mobs and/or switching up weapons..The game is very fair. Boss wise I think they should have concentrated on or balanced them with more challenging humanoid enemies so you could put what you've learned to the test..

    • @Malidictus
      @Malidictus 5 років тому +2

Old comment, but I agree. It's always odd when people claim to have come from the elitist "git gud" of a game that is Dark Souls, then proceed to complain about how hard combat is in The Surge. All the while me - a pretty average player who doesn't even like Dark Souls games - was able to cheese my way through most of it, skipping no enemies along the way. It really is as simple as pulling them one by one with the Done, at which point the majority of them can be killed reliably by exploiting their telegraphed attacks. A lot of them can be cheesed to high heaven using the duck/leap dodge, as well. In fact, the superficially scary Nannite enemies are straight-up trivial this way, as most of their attacks can be ducked.
Aside from a few enemy types, this game is predominantly "trash mobs." Warren is a glass cannon regardless of his build so simple mistakes will hurt, true, but all enemies are entirely deterministic and the timing on most of them isn't even all that tight.

I agree with everything in the review 100% - very insightful observations - except for the criticism on encounter design / enemy difficulty. Thanks to the excellent enemy moveset design in this game, I found the game provided a very satisfying curve of feeling genuinely threatened and even thinking this is impossible, to learning their moves and exploiting the openings and feeling like a badass in just a couple of hours into a new area. It was incredibly rewarding.
I do not think any of the enemies in the game have too much HP, save from maybe the robot spiders. Any of the other enemies can be killed in pretty much a single combo from backstab -> charged attack with level appropriate weapons. You just need to know where to aim the shot for them to stagger or fall over.

You have to become disciplined and patient, but eventually you figure it out. I felt that Souls and Nioh for example are much more unfair feeling when random enemy combos are impossibly difficult. I found that with The Surge, the time I put into it was paid off by feeling fully in charge of my moveset and capable of taking on any enemy.

honestly I love how hard this game is because unlike what he said it's actually very very fair !! the reason he was having such a hard time with that end game enemies was that he didn't pay attention to his build and instead just used health and stamina augments and run past enemies, as for me right up until the very last boss i didn't even use a single health augment! but instead i found all the important and rare Implants and learned the best ways to kill enemies, cuz no matter how hard an enemy in this game is, there's always a way to kill them in 3-4 hits ! he just didn't use that!! like the spider enemies are so hard and can one shot you so fast but when you learn about blocking them and using an elemental weapon on them you'll take them down in 3 hits ! the game is so fair when it comes to combat cuz you are as strong as the enemies! I died so many times in this game but i never got mad each time i said "yeah that was my bad!"

It's on sale on Steam for 2.99. Do you think I will enjoy this game if I enjoyed DS2,3 and Elden Ring? I wanted to get something similar that I can sink my teeth into and get lost in. I just beat DS2 and started playing other games and I'm having a hard time getting into any of them.

@@panamike6178 Definitely! The combat is very fun/ engaging and the gameplay is top notch. The only thing I prefer in DS is the aesthetic (I prefer fantasy over scifi) It's worth playing and does a great job of creating a nightmare world of it's own.
One thing I'll tell you now, when you come across these robot headless lion abomination from hell be sure to target the tail (Every other part is clad iron) I learned this only after beating the game 😅

The most severe crime that Deck13 committed when it came to The Surge 1 is the tragically glossed over parry. The Block+Duck+Attack= The single most powerful parry in any souls like game ever made. It completely changes the game and, when mastered, allows for a far more aggressive play style and that turns you into a killing machine that flows from enemy to enemy like a some kind of.. Kung-fu Master made of old car parts and at least one tractor. I've introduced all of my friends and those willing to read my post about it on the Surge subreddit and every single person that's taken the time to get the timing down has echoed my excitement that it exists and the frustration that the only part of the game it's mentioned is basically just graffiti on the wall before you're introduced to a new enemy type which sufficiently over shadows even that. I call it "The Flying Knee of Death" and it stops Black Cerberus in his tracks and knocks the jumping scorpion robots out of the air midleap... Seriously, the only enemies that I haven't been able to parry in this fashion are the bigger bosses and I'm still not convinced that it's not a timing issue on my part. It's meant to be used like this too because if you get the timing perfect you'll send enemies flying and take a chunk of their health down with them.. I hope you read this SkillUp because, well.. You seem to like if not love those combat and game because of it as much as I do and also because this one move will completely change your outlook on the difficulty curve as well as add a whole'nother layer of appreciation for what is truly some of the best combat ever put to code in a video gsme. (The move is still in the Surge 2... Kind of.. It's there but nerfed to hell. The Surge 1 will always be my favorite because of this move and my introduction to the music of Stumfol through their use of his song Prisoner in the Medbays). Thank you all, for coming to my Tedtalk.

Your reviews are indepth and your opinions usually match my own (for example you're one of the few youtubers who also felt assassin's creed origins is a massive grind). I finally beat the surge a few moments ago. The issues you brought up really highlight the main problems with the game. The only point I disagree on is the final phase of the last boss... man... it took hours. The surge 2 has been confirmed though so hopefully deck 13 finally craft a masterpiece. Keep up the excellent work :D.

Replaying the game this week, in my memory it was so hard that the first time I played 7years ago I can not finish the game.
Playing today I realize there are so many things in the game that make the fight much easier, like the 4th boss for example, and the drone when used correctly can make some enemy so much easier.
Such a great game, only wish the map can be more clear, at the end game I still have problem finding a to b lol

Hi SkillUp, just picked up this game, and enjoying it a lot (in the nucleus currently). I agree with you on everything, except maybe encounter design. The player needs to be deliberate about engaging a mob in the best possible way. There are certain tools such as the drone which makes things easier. I do enjoy the difficult trash mob, mainly since it keeps you on your toes the entire game. BTW, for anyone reading the comment, using regular health injectibles outside of boss fights isn't the best way, I personally just stack aggression amps and a medivoltaic along with vital boosts and one single health injectible. It makes clearing the trash much easier and also rewarding.

For me, The Surge, was a way to try out a game that is "Souls-like" and I actually enjoyed it most of the time and even got it to 100% completion on Xbox One (the DLC included).
The bosses gave me hard time to take them down, especially the last one (it's attack patterns are quite unpredictable in the 1st phase and the 2nd phase wasn't that easy either).
At around 80 core power I started the Walk In The Park DLC, which almost did it's name justice as it comes to difficulty (it was a lot harder in NG+). Finally I ended up in NG++ with 130 core power and a Mk X Pax Imperator. Not sure yet if I try a Dark Souls game, probably Darksiders III until sequel comes out in 2019.

I hope you review Code Vein when it arrives. I look forward to its release, but as the development team doesn't strike me as being as experienced in developing for this genre, like Deck 13, it's a reasonable worry that flaws you pointed out for The Surge will get repeated for Code Vein, which already has enough problem being called out as 'anime Dark Souls' where 'anime' is a dirty word. I'll like to know the final quality of this game through meticulous and neutral analysis from you.

Say what you want about dark souls, Demon's souls is the hardest to me. Out of all of the souls games including bloodbourne, I haven't beaten DeS without a specific guide. I don't even know how you would beat most of the bosses without cheesing them. I always used the temple knight for the healing. I need to go back and knight it up proper.
