Ride The Lightning was also my first Metallica album. I traded Motley Crue’s Theater Of Pain, which I had just bought and hated, for a copy of RTL on a blank cassette. Best decision I ever made.
I love the classic Crue 80's albums except for Theatre of Pain lol even Vince Neil was sober enough upon it's original release to know there were only 2 or 3 good songs on that album
I always assumed that it's because of James' talk box solo and that it plays over several vocal parts towards the final chorus that he'd not be able to replicate live. I mean they could get Kirk to do it, but then again they did that with To Live Is To Die back in 2011... to uhh... mixed results.

I'm so sorry that was your first Metallica album. On the other hand, you only had up to go from there. As long as you kept listening to albums released before that.
I love it, it’s unlike any song they’ve ever written. It’s poppy, melodic but it’s still heavy and the solo is really good. My favorite part is the slow breakdown before the solo.

What'a amazing is that, as time goes on, unlike many bands, Metallica actually speeds the songs up rather than slowing them down when playing them live. I mean, some of these songs were already ridiculously fast on the albums, but to hear James still shred the way he does is absolutely amazing. When it comes to playing thrash rhythm, Hetfield simply has no equal. He's not just fast, his playing is perfect.
Your correct, but I agree that it's probably more to do with "the rush". First time I noticed it was when I saw them on the Justice tour. They opened with Blackened, and it was so obviously faster than the album it was like a punch in the face. If I remember correctly, when I saw them open for Ozzy on the Puppets tour, I think I recall a few that were a lot faster...Metal Militia and Trapped Under Ice for sure.
@@jcass1970 I saw them during the Damaged Justice tour as well, with Queensryche. Great show! It was my second concert, with the first, coincidentally, being Ozzy, with Anthrax. Nov '88 and March '89.
I think the song (Escape) is in the key of "A".....hard to play live. But Metallica has the resources to make special instruments that are tuned to "A".....and just not tuning down which can be tricky.
I know some of these have been done live, but here's one from every album (even Lulu) and some covers. All Within My Hands should be acoustic similar to the way its done on S&M 2. The God That Failed and Unforgiven III are in my top 10 Metallica songs. Its a shame they aren't played live very often. I love Prince Charming. Inamorata is my favorite off the new album. No Remorse Escape The Thing That Should Not Be The Small Hours The Shortest Straw The God That Failed Wasting My Hate Prince Charming The Prince No Leaf Clover All Within My Hands The Unforgiven III The View Rebel Of Babylon Murder One Inamorata
trapped under ice was played on my first metallica concert that I was fortunate to attend, 2022 Prague. it was a very sweet surprise and I loved it! edit: I nearly forgot Dirty Window which I couldnt even believe I hear it when it started lol
Chasing Light live is gonna be awesome. Imagine the crowd going nuts at every "LEAN ON ME!" Shadows Follow should be an absolute banger live too I think for Inamorata they'll do the same as with Spit Out the Bone. Let the hype build and drop it out of nowhere.
Attitude absolutely needs played. That song would kill it live. Big energy song. Where the Wild Things Are, such a gem. Unnamed Feeling? Yes please. I'd also love more Judas Kiss, All Nightmare Long and Rebel of Babylon, Spit Out the Bone. New album? Gimme Chasing Light and If Darkness Had a Son. And of course, anything more from Justice is always welcome. Why cure the fever, whatever happened to sweat?!
I would love to hear metallica play astronomy live. Blue oyster cult is one of my favorite 'classic rock' bands, and metallica is my favorite thrash metal and one of my favorite metal bands in general, so it would be great to hear that live. Id also love to hear the songs that were only played once live again, like escape, to live is to die, or fixxxer, as well as to hear mama said with the crowd singing. I hope the war in ukraine stops soon so that you and the rest of the ukranian metalheads could hear that live too!
I'd love to see a lot of tracks from Beyond Magnetic performed again. Those songs have parts that would go so hard live I feel and already go hard on record \m/ Would love to see Where the Wild Things Are, House that Jack Built, Low Man's Lyric, Thorn Within, Am I Savage, and Unnamed Feeling also (again for Unnammed since they've played before I'm sure but rarely).
You just completely blew past - Human…..I was there the 1st time it was played at the original S&M and besides the version of The Thing That Should Not Be, it was my favorite song that night. I’ve seen them 12 times since then and I always hope I’ll hear it again……
I saw them play Trapped Under Ice in 2009 Tampa, FL That was actually the very 1st Metallica song I ever heard and I was hooked as soon as I heard that 1st guitar solo even before the vocals kicked in. To me, back then, they sounded lime GBH with more guitars.
The House That Jack Built would be awesome live, especially during the last chorus. And I was at the same Boston concert in 2009. Was waiting for All Nightmare Long and got it and also got Justice, which was awesome.
Ignored and never played songs I would like to hear live from Metallica Load = Ronnie , Reload = Bad Seed, Low man Lyrics / electric guitar version, St. Anger = Unnamed feeling
I was there when they played Escape live. I remember chatting in Metallicas fan club that it was going to be a historical experience. It was, it sounded good live and brought me back to the first time I heard it.
There is nothing wrong with Escape and frankly, James can like or hate his own song all he wants but constantly criticizing it is kind of a slap to fans who enjoy it. Wild Things, Attitude and Prince Charming are great and would be fantastic to hear live.
Great video. I’ve seen them 37 times. I’m chasing Leper Messiah, Eye of the Beholder, Frayed Ends of Sanity, and To Live is to Die and I will have heard all the songs off the classic first 5 albums live.
Quite literally every St. Anger song sounds better live than on the original studio album. Shying away from throwing them in the setlist is kinda silly, in my opinion of course. If they trimmed the fat on a lot of those long-winded tracks they'd work very well, since the biggest issue with them is they're just so bloated and cumbersome.
Escape and Trapped Under Ice are two of my favorite Metallica songs, along with No Leaf Clover, Eye of the Beholder, The Thing That Should Not Be, Master of Puppets, Harvester of Sorrow, Motorbreath, One, Sanitarium, Nothing Else Matters, Dyers Eve, others...Anyway, I do not know their post-black-album catalog very well.
Hey. You were at the Boston show on the magnetic tour? I was there, and it was my son Bill's first concert(at 9 yo). He loved it, but it was funny seeing him(and my niece) adapt to the volume.
Just a few of my favorite metallica covers- small hours, remember tomorrow, mercyful fate- that I don't know if they've played. They played helpless at Rasputin's and breadfan at 40th anniversary.
Great video. Ride the Lightning is my fav of their albums too, and the first one I bought and listen… don’t tell me that Trapped Under Ice is your fav song too 🤘
Agree 💯 with you on Astronomy, it’s been my favorite Metallica cover since the day it was released which I remember well since I met the band that night in Philly at the release party.
Totally agree with your takes. I remember seeing Metallica front row in Italy back in 2015 and feeling incredibly lucky 'cause the setlist included gems like Metal Militia, Cyanide, Disposable Heroes, The Frayed Ends of Sanity (fully played live only 12 times!) and The Unforgiven II (only 6 times!!)
As a teenager learning guitar in the 80’s, Escape was one of my favorite songs to play. Maybe because it was easy to learn. I don’t remember the hate towards that song back then. Seems more recent. That was a solid album.
My song for me from the garage inc album was bredfan. I got to see that played live at the 40th show as well as fixxer. It was one of the best shows i could have seen from metallica with all the deep cuts they played at those shows. truly amazing fo me.
Mama Said is the top unplayed song I wanna hear! And I had my fingers crossed for the acoustic benefit show in Los Angeles last year. Would have been the perfect opportunity. Perhaps another time.

I can criticize them all I want, HOWEVER, they were and is the most commercially successful Metal band of all time!!!! Also, they are Outstanding musicians too!!!!
I, personally have the MOST RESPECT for Metal bands that DON’T COMPROMISE on their sound!!!!
Maiden, priest, Motörhead, Overkill ect!!!!! So, I hope that explains things my friend!!!!;);)
Whene i heard load and reload i thought what are they trying to do? I stopped buying metallica music from this day. The magic was gone.
Someone was holding up a huge “ESCAPE” sign at the Soldier Field show this last weekend. James definitely noticed it and grinned, lol.
A lot of bands speed songs up live because of the crowd and adrenaline.
They jammed Where The Wild Things Are on 1997 on a few shows. Bass/Guitar Doodle is how you can find it
Escape is favorite song from this album. Such great lyrics which I hold true to my life. Hope others understand this great song
I think the song (Escape) is in the key of "A".....hard to play live. But Metallica has the resources to make special instruments that are tuned to "A".....and just not tuning down which can be tricky.
I think the only song on RTL that I dislike is Call of the Katulu. Little over winded for me.
HUGE miss not playing it in Antarctica
I know some of these have been done live, but here's one from every album (even Lulu) and some covers. All Within My Hands should be acoustic similar to the way its done on S&M 2. The God That Failed and Unforgiven III are in my top 10 Metallica songs. Its a shame they aren't played live very often. I love Prince Charming. Inamorata is my favorite off the new album.
No Remorse
Escape
The Thing That Should Not Be
The Small Hours
The Shortest Straw
The God That Failed
Wasting My Hate
Prince Charming
The Prince
No Leaf Clover
All Within My Hands
The Unforgiven III
The View
Rebel Of Babylon
Murder One
Inamorata
Man, I NEED to hear Am I Savage live!!!! That bridge riff is something iconic!!!
Damn great vid Pilgrim!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
I really love the chorus in Escape, I think its crazy that people hate that song
let alone the band themselves
I like "House that jack built"too..
trapped under ice was played on my first metallica concert that I was fortunate to attend, 2022 Prague. it was a very sweet surprise and I loved it! edit: I nearly forgot Dirty Window which I couldnt even believe I hear it when it started lol
I think the outro portion of Escape (after the guitar solo) is epic. Pounding drums and bass with the crunchy guitar riff. Pure anger.
Chasing Light live is gonna be awesome. Imagine the crowd going nuts at every "LEAN ON ME!"
Shadows Follow should be an absolute banger live too
I think for Inamorata they'll do the same as with Spit Out the Bone. Let the hype build and drop it out of nowhere.
I saw Metallica in October 2009 on my 18th birthday. Trapped Under Ice was in the set and it was awesome.
12:16 No Leaf Clover was not the only new song from S&M! -Human was also debuted during this show.
Watching Metallica live has got to be the coolest experience I’ve had on Earth so far
I'd love to see a lot of tracks from Beyond Magnetic performed again. Those songs have parts that would go so hard live I feel and already go hard on record \m/
Would love to see Where the Wild Things Are, House that Jack Built, Low Man's Lyric, Thorn Within, Am I Savage, and Unnamed Feeling also (again for Unnammed since they've played before I'm sure but rarely).
The magnetic albums make me puke
6:00 tell me why i already knew you were gonna talk about freeze them all haha still mad they didn't play it there
Yeah… Jameses balls weren’t completely dropped yet when they first created “Escape” two or three years later, very hard for him to sing…
Yeah that's not why they don't play it lol
You just completely blew past - Human…..I was there the 1st time it was played at the original S&M and besides the version of The Thing That Should Not Be, it was my favorite song that night. I’ve seen them 12 times since then and I always hope I’ll hear it again……
The next unplayed metallica song I would love to see them play is The House That Jack Built.
I saw them play Trapped Under Ice in 2009 Tampa, FL
That was actually the very 1st Metallica song I ever heard and I was hooked as soon as I heard that 1st guitar solo even before the vocals kicked in. To me, back then, they sounded lime GBH with more guitars.
I love Escape. Weakest song on the album by far; Not weak at all! I've seen them play Mama Said, back in 1998
The House That Jack Built would be awesome live, especially during the last chorus.
9:24 gives me chills every time I hear it
I really hope they play Where The Wild Things Are at least once before calling it quits. Beautiful, heavy and severely underrated.
Reload is very very underated!!!
So underrated song... one of the few Jason got credit for.
5:40 I was there!!!! Yeah!!!
Escape is a great song
I’ve been waiting and hoping for them to play “The House that Jack Built”.
EYE OF THE BEHOLDER🔥
Great video. I’ve seen them 37 times. I’m chasing Leper Messiah, Eye of the Beholder, Frayed Ends of Sanity, and To Live is to Die and I will have heard all the songs off the classic first 5 albums live.
They play Leper Messiah at every show of this tour, at least that was the case in Europe…
@@radekgruchalski9549 often but not all the cities. it rotates. Hoping to catch it in the US.
Great vid 👍
I would be fine if I never had to hear, enter Sandman, ever, never, and I mean ever again…
I started on the black album. That opened me up to all the earlier albums.
Fun fact :
Over 20 years not a Single song from st. Anger was played live
Where the wild things are it’s an enormous hidden gem 💎
Trapped Under Ice goes so hard
11:29 Yes. 100% agree, I LOVE Where The Wild Things Are.
Just a few of my favorite metallica covers- small hours, remember tomorrow, mercyful fate- that I don't know if they've played.
They played helpless at Rasputin's and breadfan at 40th anniversary.
Subscribed for liking one of my favorite deep cuts, Escape!
werent they playing trapped under ice in 2000? i dont recall the first performance being in 2009.
I’ve never seen Small Hours performed live. And I would love to! Hopefully this August in Jersey.
Trapped Under Ice is my fave Metallica song of all time. The chunky gallops, the solos, just the dynamics and changes...... Metal art. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Mama Said is the top unplayed song I wanna hear! And I had my fingers crossed for the acoustic benefit show in Los Angeles last year. Would have been the perfect opportunity. Perhaps another time.
12:19 what about Minus Human??
The house Jack built... that would be awesome! But I'd like to hear Leper Messiah and The thing that should not be live some day...
Me to dude. I wore my ride the lightning tape out and what's up with escape. I love that song
