  • Hello Everyone! Thank you for joining me and I hope this video helps you with your path with gouache paint. I decided to do this video on the heels of my latest book release "How to Draw & Paint Botanicals and Flowers" available now on Amazon. With so many people interested in gouache, I have been getting a lot of questions on how to use gouache. Particularly, how to get the right consistency when painting. How much water to use to get that right consistency takes a bit of practice, but it's getting familiar with what it should look like. In this video, I help explain what type of consistency you'll want for vibrant bright gouache painting, and how adding too much water can give you a transparent watercolor-like gouache. Watch the video for helpful information on what a good gouache consistency looks like. Happy painting!

    Nice explanation! I'm a beginner so I have this problem that I can't reach the right consistency and sometimes I feel that my brush dries so fast and I have to wet it and my gouache becomes watercolor... well, it's difficult but I need more practice and maybe to try out another gouache brand.

    Thanks for this video! I recently picked up gouache after years of saying I wanted to learn it, and the consistency was always a bit of a mystery to me! This definitely helps me :)

    Thank you for the video! I am really struggling with this as a new gouache user...well new painter all together. Someone suggested I start out with gouache bc it’s a good mix between WC and Acrylic, however, I feel like I am always using way too much paint, I end up having to really wipe my brushes off good because there is so much paint in them, and my water is dirty within the first couple of colors that I use. I’m so frustrated but really want to make this work and I don’t know what I’m really doing wrong. Any suggestions would be great! This will definitely help too!! Thanks again!!

    W&N series brushes! Those are a few bucks. Thanks for putting this up. I'm just starting with Gouache and it's either coming out like water color or oil.

    Would you recommend using brushes exclusively for either gouache or watercolor? Is gouache hard on brushes?

    • @PhilipBoelter
      @PhilipBoelter  5 років тому +1

      Gouache is much harder on brushes than watercolor. However, I recommend using watercolor brushes for gouache. I personally like the Princeton Heritage Series and the Winsor and Newton Series 7 brushes for gouache. The series 7 is more expensive than the other but lasts much longer.

    Very helpful video - I’m wondering how you can get that consistency with dried gouache or is it always necessary to work straight from the tube?

    • @PhilipBoelter
      @PhilipBoelter  4 роки тому +5

      It’s a bit harder to get that same consistency. I always add just a tiny bit out of the tube to get the harden stuff going

    If I want to save a finished drawing, it can be lacquered so that it does not get damaged, what kind of lacquer does it advise me? I have heard that it is a special lacquer for gouash

    • @PhilipBoelter
      @PhilipBoelter  5 років тому +3

      I suggest just leaving it as is... no lacquer necessary

    i want to start painting and drawing but i’m not really sure where or how to start. what should i do?

    • @PhilipBoelter
      @PhilipBoelter  5 років тому +5

      I always suggest drawing first. Pick up a mixed media sketchbook, a pencil, and a pack of liner pens. I suggest sketching every day.

    Can Watercolor be worked same way as Gouache paints? I do not like painting too thin. How about with Acrylics? I have Folk Art acrylics.

    • @ManWithoutThePants
      @ManWithoutThePants Рік тому

      I'm not an expert, but with watercolor you usually work from light to dark layering colors. Gouache you can have a bit more options and you can also start with thin layer, but the main difference between watercolor and gouache is that gouache is very opaque compared to watercolors, so you can paint on top of existing colors and cover them up. You might know this already since you posted 11 months ago :).

    try to use gouache as oil paint... almost no water and different brushes ... gouache is not a watercolour.. it does not like water ..
