    The Rapper B-free was born in Hawaii so when Suga says in his verse Go back to Hawaii it's to B-free he is Korean but was not born and raised in South Korea he thinks he knows everything about Hip hop culture but he actually doesn't he likes to talk crap so this Cypher is to all the Haters and especially to B-free

    PC cafe is a term for Internet cafe. Basically he was calling out “keyboard warriors”.
    The Rain he’s referring to is a huge artist in Korea. He has a song called Bad Boy. RM is saying he’s badder than Rain’s Bad Boy.
    “Chun” means something like 3rd class/cheap. “Shil” means nothing/meaningless.
    Roughly translates to mean something like “You’re 3rd class, cause you’re meaningless”.
    Hope this helps!

    • @dddirr

    • @Renata-wh7vn
      @Renata-wh7vn 3 роки тому +38

      exactly and then if anyone's wondering what's a PC café, then they are internet cafés in South Korea, where people can literally stay the entire day and play games and can buy food like in a café, very convenient.

    • @dddirr
      @dddirr 3 роки тому +32

      As a korean, I'm pretty sure that it is related to the law which bans teenagers from accessing PC cafe after 10 o'clock. Teenagers are thrown out at 10. The translation is quite weird: "민짜" as "plain". "민짜" actually means "minor" in korean. So RM is criticizing rappers who can't rap like a minor not an adult, and he is choking them like minors feel anxiety from coming 10'o clock at PC cafe. Sorry if there is any grammar mistake!

    @shruti6373 3 роки тому +177

    Well this track is basically towards B-free(mainly) and some haters or underground rappers who criticized RM and SUGA for leaving underground rap and becoming idols. That's why jhope doesn't diss much, infact he was like "imma set it up, then RM will murder you. Imma set it up again and then SUGA will murder you" XD
    *//Some references//*
    -"Old caterpillars" - I'm SO glad you picked up on that. Most reacters just kinda glide right past that part, never realizing just how amazing that insult truly is - caterpillars have the potential within them to evolve into a beautiful butterfly and fly into the heavens - by calling the haters "old caterpillars", it means they're long past their prime, wasted that potential, and made nothing of themselves - it is both poetic and brilliant.
    - "go to Hawaii" - B-Free is actually a Korean American, and from Hawaii(I guess) so yeah, this is a very clever diss!
    - a little side note, in Korean, referring to someone as "yah" is considered very rude, as it equates to something like "hey you" in English, and is considered a very informal speech used between same age peers and friends - saying it to someone older is a sign of disrespect - B-Free is older, and Yoongi ends Cypher 2 by laughing and yelling "yah", showing he has zero respect for him, and doesn't give a shit.

    • @em5522
      @em5522 3 роки тому +12

      Hope he takes note of the "yah" part of this explanation, if Knox ever reacts to BTS's *Baepsae.* I remember DKDKTV explaining that "baepsae-ya" can sound like a curse word, but I don't think they explained that it's doubly disrespectful bc of the added informality.

    i don't usually leave comments and stuff bc i'm pretty long-winded (as seen below lmfao) but i don't see any other good comprehensive explanations of relevant info to the cyphers so i guess i'll step up to bat as a fan who saw them all release real-time
    to understand the cyphers you need to know a little about music in korea at the time of their release in early 2014. bts are part of the k-pop industry, which differs from the western pop industry in many ways but relevant here is that k-pop idols are more explicitly products than western pop artists are marketed to be; negative stereotypes about k-pop idols usually follow the trend of "fake" or "produced" and generally lacking in artisanship & the passion associated with indie artists. it's a lot of the same stuff about western pop but more extreme. this was very prevalent in the early 2010s prior to bts's major success, especially for idol rappers, who are usually trained singers that take up rapping to fulfill a marketable image within their group "instead" of a love for rapping that "real" rappers have. at the time of bts's debut in 2013, there had been no idol rappers with roots in korean hip-hop culture to challenge this stereotype.
    however, suga & rm were both underground rappers in the korean hip-hop scene before joining bts. and they were pretty well reputed, especially rm. also they were young, rm would've been younger than 16 & suga's been doing music since he was 13, which adds a prodigy layer to all this (the 3 of them were 19-20 on the first 3 cyphers). j-hope, on the other hand, was a street dancer of similarly good reputation in his field (& same age as rm) but had no background in rapping or making music before joining bts; suga & rm taught him to rap, which is why he takes more of a backseat in the cyphers after showing off what they've taught him. because the cyphers are definitely about rm & suga.
    specifically, they are a response to the disrespect that a longstanding underground rapper named b-free showed them at a small event in korea for hip-hop artists in 2013. this was before bts the group were well known, esp in korea, and not even a year out from their official debut (the summer that year). you can watch a video of what went down with english subtitles here: ua-cam.com/video/A60nxqU_uIE/v-deo.html. basically, b-free talked shit to their faces about them choosing to become idol rappers and implied, VERY misogynistically, that masculinity is required for rappers to be acceptable (which i'd hope you understand is ridiculous & outdated, even at the time).
    suga & rm created the cyphers in response to the attacks on their standing as rappers, as a reminder to b-free and his fellows of why they were highly regarded in the underground scene. plus there's a touch of bruised male ego lol. total there's 4, the 1st was released in 2013 on their second album "o!rul8,2", the 2nd in 2014 on the "skool luv affair" album, the 3rd later in 2014 on "dark & wild", and the 4th in 2016 on "wings", as sort of a closing addendum showcasing their growth as people. there's also the soundcloud-released single track "ddaeng" by the rap line (term for the 3 rappers) which many fans colloquially consider cypher pt 5.
    as for b-free, he finally apologized in 2019 after he made some very unkind comments about bts again, but it was predictably insincere lol. in any case he's irrelevant to bts at this point in their careers, they've moved on to much bigger things. also i think he's in jail now (for reasons unrelated) so maybe he deserves the dissing still lmao

    • @eli-sg9gp
      @eli-sg9gp 3 роки тому +20

      also, since that got so long & i wanted to stay on topic but i think this important, some more helpful links & thoughts for those curious:
      1) doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com - a fan-famous translator who translates all their songs well
      2) ua-cam.com/channels/VEzR8VHu0JC5xlTr53cMwQ.html - a youtube channel who has a series called "explained by a korean" where they breakdown k-pop lyrics from a korean perspective. not sure if they've covered the original cyphers but they've covered plenty more of bts's (massive) discography
      3) ua-cam.com/video/82AXPlMFL6w/v-deo.html - a video that summarizes bts's career. it has p much everything you'll want to know short of personal details abt the members
      4) those color-coded videos are terrible, they even get whose singing what wrong a lot bc they just chase views. i'd only use them to get a gist of things, both for that reason but also bc bts's lyricism is really out of this world & a huge part of their music, so to really understand their songs reading nuanced translations is def necessary
      5) be careful navigating fan guides to the members if you ever get curious; speaking as an Old Fan the fandom tends to cherry-pick content to make the boys fit stereotypes irrespective of how untrue (or true) they are. if you'd like to get to know them, i personally endorse checking out their huge variety of non-musical content & discerning their personalities on your own before looking at fandom memes & stuff, if that's something you're interested in
      i hope all this was helpful!

He has a great rap called First Love where he personifies the piano and changes his rapping voice tell a story thru his eyes and the pianos. It is one of the most amazing live stages Suga has ever done, you can tell his passion and love in the song. Suga calls all his music making instruments friends. He shares photos on social media of new mics, speakers, anything music related and usually is like "my friend" He also never throws away music. ARMY has found clips of beats he was making from like 2014 show up in a rap he produces in 2020. Suga produces songs for other artists also, and they are extremely amazing songs.

    I've been on a binge-watch session of all your bts reactions and I absolutely love the way u do these!!
    1. you listen. REALLY WELL! and then explain, and the GO BACK so all of us who haven't noticed what u were saying can see where u were going with the explanation! that's so cool!!
    2. YOUR INTUITIONS ARE SO ON POINT?? like during the mic drop reaction, and dwaechita, you made some really reasonable assumptions and they were absolutely on point. and with these cyphers too, you always point out the dopest lines and flows and its so much fun to watch. Ive learned and notices so many new things watching you explain and pause to point things out.
    I also ready appreciate you going back a little after u restart because that helps me digest and relisten to the song with ur explanations in mind! Please always continue doing these sections the way you are, and never apologize for stopping and talking because ur awesome at it!

    You're right about "The specific shots"
    In the older days, when Suga and RM (both were underground rappers) left the underground rappers' community to become K-pop idols, they were criticized a lot for "betraying" Hip-Hop as it was said. Now for your information, RM was a well-known rapper among the underground rappers, he used to be known as Ranch Randa, he was started rapping in 2007.
    Back to the story, in 2013 there was an event in Seoul to discuss the Hip-Hop culture, Suga and RM were invited. The conversation got derailed more than once to make fun of BTS, I will not go into details, but they were called by B-Free that they are girls and that they are not real artists and they were mocked severely. And that was in front of their faces.
    And, I don't like lyrics video, no hate to the creator, but you miss lots of references and there are lots of incorrect translation. I recommend you check 'doolset lyrics', they explain the references so well! You can search it up on Google.
    Thank you for sharing your reaction!

    Check out the live cypher medley. Suga raps even faster in the live version. Its crazy. And as for his breathing well he is famous for that . He is listed as one of the fastest rapper in korea and is known for his " tongue technology "
    He often uses his breathing as an instrument and has sudden tempo changes.

    Your breakdowns are soooooo good 😭 In RM's verse he uses so many complicated wordplays that aren't clear in these lyrics. There's a lot of history to the boys and who these cyphers are directed to. If you're interested in all that and why BTS are a little different then there's an awesome free doc series on yt called Rise of Bangtan, you can watch an episode here and there and it'll help you understand them better, their history is definitely important to fully appreciate a lot of their songs 💜

    I absolutely love your breakdown here. I love the way they all rap, but don't really have the knowledge and vocabulary to say why, so you explaining exactly what they're doing really brings me a whole new level of appreciation. It's like when I watched a classical musician explain all of the subtle musical elements in Suga's First Love really made me realize how much of a masterpiece it is.
    PS. A PC cafe is literally just a cafe with computers in it that people can come and use. I'm guessing they are or were popular in Korea. This is what doolset says about this line:
    My voice that ever-strangles the necks of rap minors, PC Bang closes
    민짜 (minjja) is a slang referring to the underage, and it is required by law that individuals under the age of 18 cannot stay in PC bang after 10 PM. “Immature rappers will have to leave when I announce the time at 10 PM.”

    A lot of the references too are at K music industry putting together groups with a “rapper” that never had the gritty start in the underground, never did all the work, never worked at their rap etc. They are cat-fishing everyone as rappers yet they want to come for BTS who worked up from the bottom, gave everything they had to make their truth heard.

    Knox I think it’s awesome that you’ve not gone down the usual route of big songs first then the lesser known ones. You genuinely take our suggestions on board and are genuine with your approach.
    The thing people forget with BTS is that their disco is massive, they’ve churned out 100s of songs over the years and some are really hard to find. They just genuinely love making music. RM always said music first and charts second. Some groups have a rotation of songs that always get lots of views because it’s saturated focus. I’ve been a BTS fan for years and I KNOW I’ve still not heard all of their tracks 😂 They really have grown organically through hard work and talent and not with industry methods or buying their way in. The Kpop community try really hard to downplay or erase the difficulties BTS faced on their rise up but the receipts are all out there if people are willing to look. It was not easy in the slightest, they did it the way independent artists do it but they’re lucky they are with the type of company they started with. The company’s motto is ‘music and artists first’.
    Thank you for showing their real selves with your platform. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you stick at this. I’m enjoying your journey and think I’m FINALLY almost caught up 😂💜

    this song was actually indirectly a diss referred to this senior rapper called b-free who once called them “makeup wearing idols without actual talent” on this show type of thing and disrespected them and since they were literally kids in the industry and didn’t have much fame either, they couldnʼt do anything other keep their heads low. also this song was when they were barely a year old group. b-free is from Hawaii, thus the reference too.

    The track CYPHER 02 is going after another rapper who told RM and Suga they were betraying hip hop by becoming Idols and acting like girls. Because this other rapper dissed both RM and Suga while on tape J-hope did not have a full verse because he wanted to give the other guys a chance to clap back...and boy did they! Suga's iconic laughter at the end gets me every time! Can't wait for Cypher 3! Make sure you guys do the medley after you finish all of them. They perform all of them together at a concert and it is LIT!

    Yoongi and RM were underground rappers before but they were looked down by some bitter rappers from their own country in their debut days, they were hated and criticized because they left and became idols. These cyphers are dedicated to those rappers who dissed and told them some nasty things.

    This is directed toward B-free. A “”””rapper”””” who majorly disrespected rm and suga at the beginning of their career in bts. Both boys started as underground rappers and were criticised for being “sell outs” by their supposed superiors in the rap game.
    B-free specifically referred to them as girls, saying they go on stage wearing make up and that makes them girls, they’re disrespecting hip hop etc.
    I think one of the main reasons bts is so popular is because of their roots and respect for hip hop, the rappers are real and that has always been a positive. I think them releasing these cyphers and rapper sub unit tracks is to show that they’ve never lost that and never will.
    Also even if it’s in your own time you need to watch suga absolutely murder his verse live 🔥🔥
    I would also totally recommend some of his solo work. Daechwita is a perfect place to start.
    Really love your reactions and analysis
