    I was lucky to have just one video taped secret session in my archives. We didn't have the common place technology like the Marines do today. I treasure it like gold. Forever captures my memories of that time period. One day I will post it on you tube.

    It my sound odd and it may sound weird, but this video makes me feel so emotional. It was the summer of 1989 when I was at MCRD San Diego as a young 18 year old recruit. It moments like these, just like the video, that help mold me to the man I am today. Discipline, honor, pride, integrity, loyalty, and purpose in life. Sound cliche or corny but the Marine leadership and principles I continue to use today.

      Not weird at all, I know the feeling a lump in the throat I too remember arriving what seemed like midnight at MCRDSD 1975 I was 19.

      Trust me. They understand that the guidon is going to slip on that linoleum. Plus the SDI is going to work with the guide on his movements more than the J is. They won't really mess with the guide unless he really fucks the movement up.

    Even though it has been 30 years since3 I last saw the faces of my drill instructors (graduated San Diego, Plt. 2052 Sept. 1979), this still brings chills to me. Although, we never had to drill inside. I feel for the guide having to manuever the guidon in such close confines.

Although I'm a Parris Island Marine the Drill Instructors at San Diego are Good to Go as well. When civilians lol at this they see psycho men screaming at a bunch of impressionable young men but what they don't understand is by the end of training, each recruit would put his life in the line for his Drill Instructor in a heart beat. You have to have strapped on combat boots to truly understand the concept of brotherhood. Just one man's opinion.

    Very unique training philosophy in the USMC... No question it produces results, but it doesn't necessarily stand above all others in doing so. The Brit RM's produce an exceptional man for the battlefield & they approach things a bit differently... aggressive instruction & rigorous discipline yes, (but not hysteria) - coupled with extremely high expectations & a 'you will be culled from the flock if you cannot meet them' attitude. Not too many other famed units world-wide are as into 'breaking down the individual' to this degree... the Legion comes to mind, except it has reserved the right to inflict physical violence on recruits like the Corp would have done a decade or two ago. Still an extremely proud thing to have earned the title: United States Marine.

    • @stephen6152
      @stephen6152 8 років тому +4

      The extreme hysteria is to simulate the high stress level of a combat situation. Live fire contact is the most stressful and overwhelming situation you will ever expirence in your life, and even if you're in the marine corps with a non combat MOS every marine is a rifleman first and is trained as a combatant so to deprive them of this hysteria is doing them a dis justice by not simulating the stress of a combat situation

      The yelling, screaming, and hysteria is there to train you to ignore it and to continue focusing on the mission. I can’t tell you how many times a loud noise has spooked people around me but someone didn’t affect me at all. That didn’t happen my chance.

      To be fair, yelling at someone for not catching a ball, is a little different than yelling because your "move fasters" were slightly crooked.. One makes sense, the other requires patience and keeping your head cool while fixing the entire bay because of your 1 mistake, all while pushing..

    Im still in the army and Marines are so disc is unreal. I hang with SEALs and RECON Marines but man the the smell of a Drill Instructor they go into some sort of LOck-Up mode.

    Good to go SSGT Nichols. I only hope all the JROTC kids save their critical comments about drill since this is not final drill but just another day in training for the day it counts.

    I wish I could’ve been able to go through boot camp but unfortunately Uncle Sam didn’t think I should and DQ me twice. So I became a fire fighter instead I love the thrill of the job but I hate wondering what could’ve been.

    That was great! I am I the NJROTC and can you put up a video on how to drill a squad and shinning shoes? I am a PO3 advancing for a PO2 position and that will really help me out. If you don't believe me I can recite the 11 general orders to the sentry.

    Do you still put the trophies in the squad bay portholes? We had all of the trophies, drill, PFT, rifle, pugil sticks and boxing gloves. We lost both prac trophies though. We could run, fight and shoot, but we were the rocks. This was in 1994, when we still boxed in boot camp.

    I'm not sure about marine corps or marine boot-camp, but aren't you not supposed to let your instructor break ranks unless he says breaking ranks?
