DIY Hairpin Table Legs
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 лип 2019
- These are hairpin table legs made from 1/2 inch hot rolled steel rod.
I made them for my sister who will be using them to make a table from a piece of soapstone.
The mill scale removal was done with plain vinegar. I soaked the legs for about 20 hours and then scrubbed them with a Scotch Bright pad.
They were powder coated at Superior Finish Powder Coating in Edmond, Oklahoma who did a great job.

Great work love how frugal the build was
Thanks, Henry. I love to make my own jigs. Almost as much as making the project I’m working on. Thanks for watching!
Great job for sure. My background. Im a welder for a 1/4 century. For the last decade ive been putting up slabs of wood. I make from wood all the legs for my projects. I gotta say you went above and beyond showing the method you used to create an awesome set of legs. Not all legs are created equal. Lol. Good work for sure.
Thanks so much, thanks for checking out my video!
I wanted hairpin legs for my coffee table so I followed your instructions and ended up spending around $7,500 for the tools needed to make them. But not long after I found very similar hairpin legs on Amazon for $25 for a set of four. Damn you UA-cam!
Haha, got me chuckling pretty good on that one. Remember you can use that 7500 worth of tools for the next project too! Thanks for checking out the video!
Now THAT was funny as hell...and everybody else who laughed can relate! 'Flea market flip' makes it look so easy...
You don’t have pay for shipping
Yes, but your own work is priceless.
Lol 😆 I'm over hear considering if this is something I should be making or buying.. seems like at first it's most economical to just buy them.
Fantastic, absolutely amazing, must be the best I’ve seen in years.wow well done sir.
Thanks so much! I appreciate that! 🙏
Last Leg Woodworks you are so welcome.👍
i was relieved when I saw your head. It gave me hope that I still have time to acquire all that gear. All I have is a skid, a vise, a jig and a drill....and a full head of brown lush hair!
Enjoy it while you can!! 👨🦲
Thanks for watching!
Great job, I am going to try to make some hairpin legs for one of my live edge slab tables. Great video.
Sounds great! Good luck!
Been watching your videos... As always, great work. Greetings from Argentina. Subscribed!
Thank you, Diego! Greetings to you! I'm so glad you stopped by!
Wow wow wow wow wow 👍👍👍👍👍 I didn't realize how that 10 mins went by . Great work bro !!
Thanks! I appreciate you watching!
I liked how you were sanding barehanded and then decided gloves would be neat
HaHa,, Yea, who knew it would get hot??
👍🏼Well done! Good idea for the 90degree weld. Can you make cone legs from round tube or tapered legs from square tubing? Get back to me when youve done the video.
Nice work!
Thanks!
Thanks for the great video.
You’re welcome, Michael. Thanks for checking it out!
I don’t know why, but I love and hate the fast motion. It makes working with metal look like magic. ✌️
I know what you mean. I try to reach a balance between making it watchable and keeping it to a reasonable length. Thanks for watching!
Supereb.....good work bro...keep it up...👍👍
Thanks! I appreciate that. And thanks for checking out the channel!
Okay, that was awesome and now I realise how much effort I would need to go to to make these I'm going to bite the bullet and get 4 for £40 on ebay.
Love your jigs man!
Ha! Not a bad idea. Part of the fun is making your own! Thanks a lot for watching!
@@LastLegWoodworks Oh 100% I'm just trying to make a desk and thought I'd search how to make these legs. If I had your set up I would definitely be making my own cos that looked fun as hell!
wow very nice you are a beast! Just got started doing some woodworking on and off a two years ago as a hobby and I would like to pair that with metal legs as well. Excuse my ignorance but why and what did you soak the legs in? Is that done for every metal piece?
By the way liked and subscribed.
Thanks! I did that to remove the mill scale that is produced during the hot rolling process of making the steel rods. I later learned that cold rolled doesn't have this scale so its much easier to clean up. Thanks for watching!
Nice job!!!! I’m in Yukon OK
Thanks, John! I’m going to check out your channel, looks very interesting.
These are rad!
Thank you!
Is the angle iron 1/4 x 1 1/2 and a threaded coupler for 1" pipe
The angle iron is 2 inches, but it wouldn't need that that size, that's just what I had on hand. Yes, the other pat is a coupler that has a 1 inch outer diameter. Thanks for watching!
Great joooooooob...
Amazing my bro.
Thanks! I’m going now to check out your channel. Thanks for watching!
Hi great video, what do you think should be the minimum thickness of the metal peds? (The part with the holes)
Hello, thanks! Hard to say what the minimum would be. I think it would depend on the length of the leg and the weight of the table it was holding. Mine were 14 gauge which is just barely under 1/8 inch. I probably wouldn’t have used anything thinner. If the legs were going to be very short then maybe I could have. Also welding the 1/2 inch rod to a very thin plate would have been more challenging for my limited welding skills. It helped to have an 1/8 inch of steel to weld on. . Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Ok thanks, something else, what is the size of the pads? ( The dimensions?!?)
@@alonro Sorry, I just saw this post. Here is a link to the diagram I made when I made the plates. Hope that helps. Thanks!

What was the diameter of that round metal piece there in the center 1 in inch and a half
I think that is right. I believe it was a coupler for a 3/4 inch pipe. Thanks for checking it out!
I have a chaise lounge chair that sits way too low for me. I want to raise this chair about 13 inches, can you suggest what type of leg I should use please.
I suppose you could use a harpin leg, might depend on what the lounge chair is made of.
Hello! Great video! Have a couple of questions for you and i apologize to you've already covered the answers to these but I was curious on what angle did you put your legs at on your jig before welding it to the plate in order to adequately support the weight of the table? And also I know you had mentioned that you were just making these for your sister but if someone wanted to purchase these from you or have you custom make a set of table legs like the ones here in the video what would you charge to do something like this? Again great job thanks for sharing! subscribed and following! Oh and I love the flip-flops!
5 degree angle.
Unfortunately, I would have to charge too much for these as they took several hours. You can buy them online for pretty reasonable prices. These are easy for machines to make so they can be sold cheaply. Hand making them takes a lot more time. Thanks for watching!
Me pareció que las patas van ángulo rectos no le dio alguna inclinación
I don’t care how old this video is, but I think I just fell in love😍💍
Ha! Thanks!! And thanks for watching!
cool- what's the vinegar for ?
Hello, the vinegar soak was to remove the mill scale from the metal. It has to be removed for the powder coating to adhere. Thanks for watching!
Cool flip flops
Thanks!
I saw what looked like a plan, would you mind sharing where you got the plan?
Hi, Matthew. I designed them myself in SketchUp. I’d be happy to send you the plan if you’d like it.
Last Leg Woodworks that would be great!
@@Matt_Barbee Here you go. I used 1/2 inch round rod and I took the height that I wanted the leg to be and doubled it and ten added I think about 8 inches for the curve at the bottom. This left it a little long so I could trim it even. I believe I made the angle 5 degrees. Also, ask for cold rolled round rod at the steel yard and it wont have any of the mill scale on it like my hot rolled did. I didn't learn this until afterwards. Chuck up the cold rolled rod in a drill and spin it while holding some sandpaper on it and it cleans up great. Good luck! have fun! www.dropbox.com/s/niv9c6qhigrpeqh/hairpin%20plate.jpg?dl=0
Instead of powder coat, can these be stained instead? Thanks
I’m not sure about stain because they are steel, but they could definitely be painted.
Thank for watching!
I patina mine with acid.
looks like you did loads of specialist work by yourself there, then took them off to get them painted. why didn't you spray em yourself?
They were made for an outdoor table so I wanted to get them powder coated. I took them to a place nearby for that. Thanks a lot for checking out the video!
Exlent bro... iam new subscriber.
Awesome! Thanks!
Holy crap!!!! Was that a Subaru?!?
Yes! Ha!
Where did you go?
I’m here!
You left in your car with the table legs bare metal after vinegar bath. May I assume you went to a powder coating shop to have them powder coated
I did, I thought I had mentioned the name of the place in the description but I’ll go back and add it if I hadn’t. It was a local place that did a great job. Thanks for watching!
Hola.
Every woman watching is like damn, what didn't I marry him 🤣
