I have a great tale about Van Morrison, during my time at music college one of my tutors told me a few stories about a few arse holes in the music business and Van was one. The tale was regarding a friend and acquaintance of my tutor who was a session musician. The band was rehearsing before a gig and Van Morrison was being a complete wanker with the whole band, nothing was right etc. during a meal break Morrison went out to lunch but had left his harmonica on the stage. All of a certain section that were told to stay and rehearse took the harmonica and each person put it down the back their pants and swiped it up their arse crack. Made me chuckle.
My flatmate was a session musician and had a job for a week with Van, she came home in tears every day - thank you so much for this story - I have sent it to her! ❤😂
Ah yes Van so many stories. I heard he auditioned people by staring into a wall/ corner in a room, wouldn't talk or acknowledge the player, they had to impress him. If they didn't someone else or himself would tell them to fuck off out of it. And then there is the great Zappa who forced a young Steve Vai to play insane riffs on the spot, kept adding to the challenge until Steve was like " that is impossible " to which Frank said " I hear Linda Ronstad is looking for a guitar player". Hilarious stuff. Wankers in every walk of life.
I love that story. Thank you. I’ve been suffering VM’s epic lack of self-awareness for fifty years. The easy thing (the thing I opt for) is to hate him for his unbelievable, unjustified arrogance. Eg where does HE think he ranks next to Dylan, McCartney, King et al? I think I know… But recently I got to wondering if his grandiosity is actually a symptom of underlying mental illness? His lack of logic and perspective in recent statements / records is not normal, that’s for sure.

I would add these audiophiles who pay hundreds of dollars for a record that comes in a cardboard box HRQR whatever it’s called and nobody complains about the price
@@davepounds8924 Sadly it’s something companies are pushing deliberately, very little money to be made in streaming and now vinyl records are their cash cow. They’re using ridiculously (and unnecessarily) expensive materials and whatnot just to push records above the $100 price range. Add to that all the manufacturing issues and long waiting list in pressing plants and you get the mess we’re in today. Maybe that’s why CDs are starting to have a little revival; personally, I have my limits, I won’t pay more than $50 for a single record, just no way.
Good job Mazzy! For the most part I agree whole heartedly. As an Independent/Conservative I am not always in lock step with your political opinions, however your choice for #1 was dead on!! This is why we should ignore this "Cancel Culture" thing. As someone much smarter than me once said "We either learn from history or we are doomed to repeat it" that's why this kind of Anti Semitic rhetoric is so dangerous. Cheers Class of '72.
"Ignore cancel culture" "Anti semitism is so dangerous" So, if we stop people from being anti semitic, isn't that cancelling them? You can't possibly hold both these ideas at the same time, unless you are an idiot.
Exactly. The comments section under each of Kanye’s meltdowns is filled with people who gladly, openly, passionately endorse the man’s views. They call us ‘monsters’ and blame the world’s troubles on us. They accuse us of controlling the media. It’s ridiculous and it’s exhausting, but hate-crimes are on the rise, especially against the Jewish community, and Kanye is feeding the beast.
Never met my Grandfather, my mother never met her father. He died with her maternity ward picture, newly born, in his pocket. He's buried if France. he died after surviving the Normandy invasion. Killed by a half crazed, starving German sniper who had been hiding in a tree. My Grandfather's compadres were good enough to shoot that SOB down out of the tree afterward. I agree with you 100 percent.
Bravo Mazzy! Well thought out. The first 9 were the truth, entertainment, opinion, and $ driven, but #1 .. I couldn’t agree with you more, is a serious real life issue. Trying to be challenging and free thinking here here is really uneducated, narcissistic, and dangerous in this case imo. Words, this is where it starts, did and do hurt! Thank you.
I saw a stream of Beyonce saying No one listens to albums anymore. They just listen to singles. They combine singles to an album but no one listens to a full set of an artists works.
brilliant, love the vibe,,, had me giggling so much, btw Van the man back in the day(79/80) had a bad habit of showing up to his concerts too pissed to perform, so much so that Katie Kissoon backing him, sang more than half the standards, refunds were quite common. When someone asked jocularly "kanye ye sing?" in Scotland, my mate pitched in with "can ye f**k", he is the biggest non-entity and everything that's wrong with the music world, he's truly delusional and no surprise to me that he only opens his mouth to change feet, wanker numero uno for sure, thanks again, best giggle this week by far...
IMO, you're right on the mark with #1, and I thank you Mazzy for speaking out and speaking your mind. --- Oh, and I have to add a little extra word of wankerness to UHQR releases....I can't stand that they make "UHQR" the headline on their boxes, presented in larger text than all else and given top billing above a reduced sized album cover image....The hubris to make itself the star of the show over the musicians is a wanker move IMO.
One of the best end of year top ten video lists I’ve watched in recent years. Found myself hysterically laughing out loud. So much truth in this humorous rant of a video. All great picks for this list and Kanye West absolutely deserved to be the #1 Wanker! Well done! Bravo! ❤
Haha! The Wankers of 2022 vid is here! 🥳 An autopen? BS! I received 2 noisy as hell copies of Animals, returned then both, am fine with my original. The Ticketmaster thing is just plain theft. I love Morrissey and The Smiths music too, but walking offstage because it was too cold?! Really?! C’mon… MoFi records generally sound great, could care less if they’re digitally sourced, but the lying part is tough to accept. I sold my MoFi Dylan mono records after buying the mono box. But, Kanye…He and his words are dangerous. Fantastic vid, Mazzy! Thanks ✌️🔊😊🎶
As a brit, I have no problem hearing an American user the word "wanker". Just be aware that appropriate use of this word depends on the company you are in. Close friends, fine, your grandmother maybe not. 😀
Hello from Montreal. Very honest and necessary that someone brings up the crap that goes on in music business. We should think twice when it comes to supporting artist and company’s that behave poorly, unethical and lie. Unfortunately it goes on everywhere. All the best
Wow! Love your forthrightness and honesty even though the music you speak of is not quite my bag! (But records are!) Very nice to hear a country other than UK and Australia using the "W" word! All the best from downunder!
I so agree with your comments on crap quality pressings, I recently purchased Eva Cassidy's Greatest hits on a double album (180grm), the poor quality of some of the tracks is truly distressing (they're that bad), the album was released by Blix Street Records, a Company that I had not heard of before. Contrast that experience with a Toyah Album released in 2021 called 'Posh Pop' which I purchased at the same time, and the difference in quality of pressing is astounding. The Eva Cassidy album was the equivalent of $46 U.S., and in my opinion is not worth it, Toyah came in at $22 for a single L.P. and is worth every penny. I have good equipment that I have spent a lot of time (and money!) collecting and upgrading whenever possible, the sh-t from Blix is unworthy of being played on it! Great video, keep up the good work!
Hey, Mazzy, I'm writing to get your perspective about my own personal misgiving for this past year. I'm generally pretty careful about where I go to see shows because I value my creature comforts. I don't like standing for three hours, I don't like getting squished, and I don't want to get my ears blasted off. At 74 years old, I gotta take care. I wanted my GF to hear Willie Nelson, cause he's getting way up there in age, and he's a true national treasure of a musician. I don't generally visit large venues, and I try to see shows in halls where the physical qualities are most simpatico, but Willie was playing Shoreline Amphitheater. I figured I was pretty safe as far as sound levels because Willie is an acoustic act. Boy, was I wrong!!! The three opening acts were Americana/roots groups, but electrified to the hilt! Never in my life have I had my eardrums blasted off at such high db levels - ever! The amplified kickdrum levels induced pure pain with each and every beat of the opening groups' music. What the f--k drives a venue to deliberately inflict physical injury to its patrons? Is the music more satisfying at earsplitting levels? Of course not. Generally, I vote with my feet and avoid such venues. But in this case I trusted that with an 89 year-old musician the venue's sound engineer would get the message that an audience of older folks was attending and might appreciate a more quiet show. Whatever should I do? Yeah, I used earplugs, and my ears are still ringing weeks afterward. (Willie must have had his own engineer because his mix was perfect, and the levels were just right.)
The Dead used to have great sound systems played at reasonable levels, though they often played in places with dubious acoustics- and you'd have to be a Deadhead to avail yourself of their great care for sound. Beyond that, I consider myself lucky to love classical music, because your typical classical concert-going experience and particularly the acoustical experience is worlds beyond that of typical large-scale popular music settings- and volume levels are rarely insane. Also, e.g., I got tickets for five good seats at five NY Phil concerts this season for $250 total (on a modest discount code), without spending hours online with the ticket wanker monopoly; and $50 a show used to sound like a lot to me, but between decades of inflation plus what I hear people spend on good tickets for the big pop/rock acts- hundreds, even thousands of bucks- it's peanuts. And it's amazing large-scale acoustic sound.
I had not heard that retail stores can't return defective records. I didn't have any idea this was the case. I've returned quite a few LPs that had too much surface noise or some sort of error on them with Amazon. I had no idea they would get stuck with the item and not be able to return it themselves. That may be one reason they have told me a few times just to keep the item and they would send a replacement? That is absurd that a manufacturer is not held liable for a defective product. On a side note, and similar to that topic, I think that the Walmart in store purchases should be on the wankers list. If you buy any of the Walmart Exclusive or I guess any LPs at all online from Walmart, you have 90 days to return the product for any reason and get your money back or exchange it. However, at least here in Texas and I'm sure probably elsewhere, if you buy it in a store they will not take it back If they don't have a replacement. They'll take it back if it's defective and you can only exchange it for another. But if they don't have another, you cannot get your money back, you can't get another artists LP as a replacement, and you are just SOL. That is absurd! I will never buy another record from Walmart in store. I bought about $250 worth of the $15 Black Friday records online just to try them out and see how it worked. And I have to say that about 80% of the LPs were great and perfect in their condition. I've noticed that if it's a big artist like Led Zeppelin or The Eagles, you're going to get a much better product. But some of the items seem to be coming from maybe lesser grade pressing plants, and I don't know if it's GZ Media or who it is exactly at this point. I'm still waiting on receiving another 4 LPs but having gone through about 10 maybe that I have gotten I've had two of them that were horrible pressings. The other eight or so were perfect. I'm just holding off until I get the rest of my order so that I can return or exchange the ones with issues all at one time. But Walmart online gives you 3 months so that sure does make things a lot easier and you're not in a rush or having to make multiple returns. I would think that the in-store purchases would follow that same guideline or at least give you a month to return something that is noisy or problematic. But they won't. I had bought one of their Fleetwood Mac Rumors copies earlier this year and I bought it in the store. It sounded horrible. I mean beyond horrible. They were giving me problems the next day as I was trying to exchange it for another copy. But they finally did and the second copy was just as bad. I went back again and a different person was working then and it was the same trouble. They had one last copy that was opened and just sitting in the store. I don't know if somebody had returned that one or what? I told them I wanted my money back and they wouldn't give it to me. I told them I'd like to exchange it for another LP then of the same price. They wouldn't do it. I had to take that open copy and believe it or not it didn't sound as bad as the sealed copies but it was still terrible. I wasn't even going to buy anything LP related from Walmart after that but I had a similar issue with Journey Escape that I had bought online from Walmart In December of 2021. And they were great. I didn't think I could return it and then I noticed they gave 3 months to return it. So I contacted them and they were happy to take it back and send me another copy. I could have gotten a refund from them but the second copy was almost mint. So I definitely do not recommend buying anything on vinyl from inside of the stores when it comes to Walmart. But buying it online, you're protected against problematic records. It's still Walmart either way but the stores are definitely wankers in my opinion and I think that if I pressed things maybe the corporation would hopefully resolve the issue. But I don't want to go to that kind of trouble. That really bites Mazzy that the manufacturers aren't held to any accountability if they're putting out messed up records. I hate that the retail stores have to take the hit but I know that I'm not going to take it if I buy something and it's messed up. Even my local record store will take back a brand new record if it is flawed. I think that the manufacturers should be held accountable! Oh yeah, and did you mean Ticketbastard aka Ticketmaster when you said Ticketron? I remember the days of Ticketron and maybe on the west coast it's still called that? I'm not sure? I am 100% in agreement with you on that hole debacle also! They are ticket scalpers themselves but worse. I've already seen everybody multiple times that I need to see in this lifetime unless prices change and the scam they have going on is broken apart. It blows my mind that they claim they're doing this dynamic seating or whatever it's called to keep third-party companies or ticket scalpers from overpricing tickets. Heck, they're the ones doing exactly what they say they're trying to prevent doing. What a sham! Nobody is that stupid to hear this and not know what is going on. This is one of the few times I do hope government gets involved and breaks the monopoly apart! I will never buy another ticket again if it comes through them and this doesn't change. I almost would put them at number one if it was my list. That really angers me with that story that is going on. You're really picking some good ones here and I have been in 100% agreement with what you have been saying. And I'm not even through watching the video yet haha. Keep up the good work and call them out!!! Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
Just a note: "wanker" is the person; "wanky" is the adjective; "wankery" or "wankerism" are the nouns for describing a process or activity Calling something a "wank" is a noun used in a sense like "what a wank!" .
Obviously as a Brit I love the way you use what I consider to be one of "our words". As you say very entertaining until you got to number one. I raised my sprits the way you talked abut Kanye West. As you say so rightly words matter. The idea that anyone who likes music can deny their power is beyond me. Nice one!
Well done! Ticket Master needs to be stopped. They are one reason I don’t go to LARGE concerts. I buy all my tickets through Etix, Axis and Eventbrite. Tickets go right to your phone and no charge most of the time
Couldn't agree more with your #1. As you went from #10 up, I thought "What about Kanye?" at every step. Acting like a douche is one thing, promoting a mass murderer is on a whole different level of bad.

@@frommetoyou1981 I like Swordfish Trombones. It came out in 1982 and I had it on vinyl. He also did a duo album with country singer Crystal Gayle that year, it was a soundtrack session for a movie. But I can't remember the title of it the movie. You might know.
Great insight to what is happening in the industry. I am a vinyl collector from the 70's and recently upgraded my system. Buying records these days is much different than 50 years ago. I watch videos hoping to get some understanding of the process that goes into making these records. At these prices and my budget I can't afford to just gamble on a record that sounds terrible. In the past when I bought a certain label I knew what I was getting. Information on the quality of particular processes , records or companies is still guesswork to me. Hopefully there are more channels like yours!
I had to pause at 40 seconds to give a thumbs up, it's just one of those videos I knew I'd like. The UHQR is 100% masculine bro packaging. No woman had input into that design. Same with the 1-Step box. I'm glad you mad this video, ye and the orange devil totally deserve to share the #1 position.
Glad you included the auto pen controversy of Dylan…as an autograph collector I would have bought it if I had known about and would have been horrified if upon receiving it, that it was auto penned….glad to hear that refunds are being made…I’ve been searching for a Dylan sig for a while. However, eBay sellers are representing it as a signed book! Now, with that being said, the Supreme Court has ruled that an auto pen is an “authentic” signature (this was based on President Obama used it to sign some legislation) but collectors considered it as a fiat signature. Just some background, not trying to excuse the executive’s or Dylan’s people to get off the hook.
Prince wrote Nothing Compares 2 You for a band on his Paisley Park label called The Family. The album was marginally successful here & big in Japan. It came out in 1985. Perhaps members of that group ( his friends ) are part of his estate .
I doubt very much that The Family makes any significant royalties from that album, Prince wrote, produced and probably played every instrument on it . I did own that album and "Screams of Passion" 12 in single
I used to know Andy Rourke a little bit and have a pint or two with him here and there. He always, as in for years, way back, always used to refer to Morrissey as Dorissey. It kind of summed up his thoughts about him perfectly in one single word.
When I (Brit) arrived in Canada around 10 years ago, there was a piece on the mainstream TV evening news called "Winners and Wankers". Somewhat surprising...
Well as a brit you'll know there are alot of wankers on brit telly (wanker central) they just don't announce them as such. It left to viewer 'discretion'.....😆
With you on all this, particularly Ticketmaster's longtime breathtaking scam monopoly. I saw Bob Dylan in Berlin this October. I paid 235 Euros for an online ticket. In contrast, I saw Bowie's Serious Moonlight tour in Toronto in '83. Ticket price was $5 Cdn.

I could not agree more with your list. I would like to add one more and that are artist who have already made a fortune releasing old records in super deluxe packaging at super deluxe prices. Yes I am talking abut the Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd and so on. I am sure these Superstar artist have some say in the pricing but I feel they are just as greedy as the labels who put their records out. Once again thanks for the video.
Well said Mazzy! Agreed with all (except maybe the box - at 150 bucks the package atta be freakin bullet proof! But I get where you’re coming from ditch the box and pass on the savings). Also surprised Eric Clapton didn’t make the list. I recall a great video you made calling him out for taking legal action against a woman who sold a bootleg CD.
The UHQR albums do sound wonderful, but the box really IS wasteful- at least offer identical lps without the box. And Mazzy is right- UHQR boxes are not exactly screaming 'classic brand,' like Hermes or Rolexes or whatever- they look like generic stock from a stationery store with a label pasted on. And I think it should go without saying that these editions will most likely NOT be "treasured by generations to come," as the advertising sometimes claims, which is total ludicrous wankery- at most on average a 1% chance that your children or my children or nieces or nephews or whomever will care about the stuff that musical packrats like me or others collect (out of love of the music or otherwise). The bulk of this stuff will either get tossed, or sold on ebay or wherever to anonymous folks. Cold hard facts...
Poor old Van - gave up on the old fart years ago - '87's 'Poetic Champions' ended a great run of albums. Great to see my all-time favourite 'Forever Changes' there. Thanks Mazzy, fine wankitude! A deservedly serious ending, thoughts with you.
Great list Mazzy but I would also include the streaming services that pay miserable fee’s to the artists and why not include all the shitty EU labels like DOL, Jazzwax, Waxtime, Groove Replica and several others that are making reissues from CD rips and paying zero to the artists or the estates.
As someone who has family members that suffer from extreme bipolar disorder, i have to say that i cannot bring myself to be offended by Kanye's behavior atm.. (To be scandalized by this nonsense is equivalent to being offended by a homeless schizophrenic's inappropriate ramblings in the street. The man simply needs help, not longform podcasts).
That was very interesting and cathartic for me too. I fully support your number one choice though the whole Mo-Fi waffle has dragged the VC right down for the best part of this year. K.West is tied up with that prosperity gospel fellow American Joel Osteen and probably lots of other miscalculated good intentionals too he really is a prize plum (fool). Very enjoyable video Mazzy. Please add the Zappa family trust to your list for screwing the fans with overpriced releases and for the disgraceful treatment of their own brother, Dweezil Zappa.
Yes I agree with you about this, Dweezil zappa has been treated like shit by the 2 younger siblings. Frank told his wife Gail to sell everything upon his death but she split the trust 30% each to the younger siblings and 20 % to Dweezil and moon unit. Now Ahmet zappa does not want his brother Dweezil to even use the zappa surname, can you believe that.?
"Ignore cancel culture" "Anti semitism is so dangerous"
So, if we stop people from being anti semitic, isn't that cancelling them?

Another really really Goode one..thank you
Mazzy your use of the word wanker is spot on, and completely hilarious. Keep it up.
This is nothing new. That was done already in the seventies and eighties.

Great list Mazzy and you couldn't be more right with number 1 👍
As a brit, I have no problem hearing an American user the word "wanker". Just be aware that appropriate use of this word depends on the company you are in. Close friends, fine, your grandmother maybe not. 😀
Whoa thanks Mazzy. What a great video. Can we expect a video featuring your upcoming lawsuits?
Peg Bundy from the sitcom Married with Children was Peg Wanker from Wanker county before she got married. Always made me smile!
Thank you Martin ✌🏼🤠
What the fuck do you expect, buying shite like that on vinyl 🤦🏻♀️
@@lucasoheyze4597 It's great when you make posts and get moronic responses such as yours. Get a life for God's sake.
Gutted I didn't make the list, will have to work a little harder to raise my profile in '23.
I have had the same experience lately with live shows. Not only loud but also unintelligible vocals.
Give me a small club with a jazz quartet.
100% agree with this list. ESPECIALLY #1
Terrific Yuletide rant Sir Norman- don’t ever change-
Merry Christmas

Wanker is not a strong enough word for the No.1.
Well said Mazzy about Kanye West ! Absolutely spot on! 👍👍
So agree with most of this, Mas. Great content, glad to subscibe, looking forward to more of this ranting.
Ranting is only an occasional occurrence here. It’s fun but the music usually comes first. ✌🏼
@@mazzysmusic I get that, and was kidding. A lot of what you're doing resonates.
Great video Mazzy. I agree with all of these. I would just change the position of the UHQR box issue. But other than that, great list.

Just a note: "wanker" is the person; "wanky" is the adjective; "wankery" or "wankerism" are the nouns for describing a process or activity Calling something a "wank" is a noun used in a sense like "what a wank!" .
I lived to be educated with wankerism.

We would say "wankery" rather than ism, but other than that, excellent video :)
Ticketmaster was always known as "Ticketbastard" in DeadHead circles. They have only gotten worse
Obviously as a Brit I love the way you use what I consider to be one of "our words". As you say very entertaining until you got to number one. I raised my sprits the way you talked abut Kanye West. As you say so rightly words matter. The idea that anyone who likes music can deny their power is beyond me. Nice one!

I got the Dylan poncho too! I was baffled as well as to why...
Well thanks for the info. Didn’t know that ✌🏼
As an artist myself I definitely would have taken the time to sign every album.
