- Welcoming a new baby into the family can be a big change, especially for a child with autism. Cameron is now big brother to baby Cain and in this video we share our tips and clips to help your child adjust to their new sibling.
Start by introducing the idea of a new sibling early. Use clear and simple language. This helped alot for Cameron. Visual aids like storybooks to explain what a baby is and what to expect when they arrive really helped and our baby boy doll from Smyths toys.
Social stories are especially effective for children with autism helping them understand upcoming changes in a way they can relate to.
Involve your child as much as possible like preparing the nursery or choosing a toy for the baby this helps build up excitement and makes your child feel included and important.
Cameron loves his big brother role and helps me with baby Cain all the time. Getting his dressing gown ready for after his bath, passing me a nappy during changes and turning on his swing chair.
We always reinforce these positive interactions by celebrating his role as big brother.
