You don't "buy" a new walk-in freezer Jason. You "build" a new walk-in freezer. I witnessed you build one for the Rhodes family a few years back.
That’s right you did build on for the Rhodes … also make it solar with back electric company
Unsolicited advice - put those freezers on individual circuit breakers so if one blows you don't lose EVERYTHING. And, I have not seen you use one, but get a portable generator that will power them all in the event of grander power outage. Food for thought
After watching you and your family for years, I would definitely buy poultry from you if I lived closer. You take exceptional care of all of your animals and it shows. Best of luck to you.
We just butchered 6 turkeys, 8 ducks and about 100+ chickens. We have a medium and large chest freezer in the basement alnd a full sized upright freezer. We have a small chest freezer, 2 upright freezers and a fridge/freezer in the garage, the fridge freezer in the kitchen and fridge freezer on the back porch and they're ALL FULL!! NEED TO BUY ANOTHER ONE!! LOL!
WHERE i LIVE i CAN BUY WALLAMRT OR COSTCO CHICKEN FOR $2.99 lb OR TURKEY ON SALE FOR THE SAME. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST YOU TO RAISE PROCESS AND KEEP THOSE ELECTRIC FREEZERS GOING>>>
😮
I’m so proud of what you’ve accomplished since coming from California. Best of luck to your family.
I know you built the portable cooler - FANTASTIC SERIES!!! I'm surprised you haven't built a walk-in cooler?
well, I already have a cooler. a walk in is not a priority. on day though
Hi, Jason and Lorraine! Your 18 turkeys are beautiful. I’m loving your new kitchen. Awesome renovation! Your homestead is steadily growing. Congratulations, Jason and Lorraine.
It's like Ben said in the podcast, you need one freezer for each type of meat, lol. Plus, you might need one for fruits and veggies from the garden.
Appreciate you and your family Jason. Lorraine and Penelope are awesome family assets for your farm. Plus Lorraine's family helps also. You have held many work shops to help others learn how to survive. Keep it up. Be discerning, wise, healthy, strong, safe, have a peace filled mind and be successful. Blessings and prayers for you all in His Holy Name. ☝🙏🙌💪👊
Follow your local auctions. I've seen a lot of restaurants or butchers retire/ close shops. They auction off the equipment. That's how I've obtained so many supplies for our homestead.
I started adding the water to the feed buckets FIRST and then adding the feed. I don't need to stir the feed when soaking. Total game changer for us!
I’m so glad they did take it to the barn, I kinda thought they wouldn’t. 😅 The bacon looked delicious!
I love ALL Sow the Land videos!
Buy a walk in freezer? Jason, you've done videos of you making a walk in cooler! lol I see you making a cool bot room! :D Happy for you guys!
I would prefer several smaller freezers. If one goes out, you can move stuff into working freezers. If the power goes out you can run a little generator and switch freezers every 1 - 2 hours. If you have one big freezer room you have more chance of losing everything.
Lorraine says owww and the pigs laughed at her so funny lol hugssssss
That bacon looks delicious 😊
Hi Jason, great to see you are getting into selling your poultry. If you plan to sell pork Zeke is going to need a few more ladies to service so you can stagger the growth and have a continuous supply and/or you can get a second faster growing breed of pig to supplement. Heck you can even sell CSA boxes of garden produce next year too. Can't wait to see what you end up doing! Love your videos.
Now... your homesteading start evolving not only to provide your family a good and healthful food but for others too who believe and have like minded when it comes to nutrient dense and clean meat/produce. Keep it up and love to see the day to day process of raising good food along with other stuff like build, maintainance, etc. on your homestead.
NOOOOO! Don't get anymore upright freezers. They don't do as good a job keeping things cold. You dump ALL that cold air every time you open it. The compressor has to work more using more electricity AND wearing out more quickly. Just use chest freezers. Good luck.
Oh geez
@@SowtheLandshe’s right, plus if the power goes out, the chest freezer stays frozen longer.
I believe I bought that same upright freezer 2 years ago (Whirlpool from Lowes). I've had no issues at all with it. I mainly use mine for garden produce though. I love the flash freeze option it has-- when you put a bunch of new stuff in it at once you can hit the snowflake button 2 or 3 times to turn on the flash freeze. It then works harder to freeze the new stuff more quickly while keeping the stuff already in there frozen. If I have the door open for a long time while searching for something or reorganizing it I will also hit the "flash freeze" for an hour or so. It will sound louder on the coldest setting but that just means it's working. Good luck on your meat selling venture!
Hi Jason - can you finish some of the pigs in the woods? Some of the most expensive pork in the world is acorn-fed Spanish ham. Good luck, glad to see things evolving for you guys.
On the freezer front - I have wanted to get the DC powered models so I can run them off of solar, LiFePo battery bank for night, with a back-up generator. They can also be run off of a 120/12v converter and sip energy until I have my solar components ready and set up.
Definitely get the warranty. I had one just like that. It only lasted 18 months. I was sick on how much merchandise I lost.
Go Lowe’s! Wow!
Many congratulations to you and the family on your continued success! 🎉🎉
All the animals look Great.. Yummmmm!!🛠️🤙🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🏁Be blessed🙏🙏
I'm so excited for you guys. I'm smiling ear to ear haha. 😄🧡
😊 thank you
Good for you guys. I hope you are very successful!
Thanks so much!
Hi Jason....Joan here to let you and your subscribers know that I cooked the chicken I picked up from you the other day and it was delicious! The breast meat was so white, clean and juicy. All I did was put some EVOO on the outside, a little salt and pepper and baked it in my oven on 350 degrees for almost an hour. You can taste the freshness! As a person who eats mostly boneless, skinless, organic chicken breast, salmon and salad, your chickens are top shelf! So glad you and your family took the leap of faith and moved to North Carolina...keep doing what you do! Can't wait for Thanksgiving to cook the turkey I purchased from you.
One of the best things I've done is build a 6'x6'x8' cold smokehouse! I soak my bacon in a seasoned brine for at least 7 days, preferably 10 days... then into the smokehouse for 6-8 hours! MMMmMMmMM
If I remember right, Aust at Homesteady used a Cool Bot to make a freezer room. May be worthwhile to build something that you could easily hang cuts too. I guess with selling, there may be different requirements for that.
Happy for you! I wish i was near you do i could get a turkey😢
Zeke is so cool. The chickens are so pretty. I bet you can sell their feathers.
❇️💕❇️
The turkeys and chickens are looking beautiful.
Thanks for your video.
I’m very proud of your family. When I come that way I’ll do my best to reach out to support.
I saw you build a walk in cooler for Justin way back when. I bet there is room in that barn for one
Absolutely hilarious with your big daddy pig Zeke‼️And I sure needed those chuckles today❗️
That’s funny you said you were the snack man feeding the pigs. We call my husband the “snack man” with our cats because that’s how the cats know him. He’s the one that gives the extra treats!
A walk in cooler would be nice. You could turn that room you have the freezers now into one
So exciting you guys… love the kitchen remodel too!
Uprights are the way to go!
Ok, I hear you about all the freezers, Jason, we have 4 regular size and a small one. My husband often hears me say…maybe we should get another freezer. We are only 2 people and we don’t sell meat. Lol
Hey Jason, love that new freezer. I have a chest freezer and if I were to get another Id go for a vertical one I think. I have wifi thermometers which connect to my phone. You can set thresholds so it will alert you if the temperature is out of range. They are very handy if you are able to get the network running for you.
Love following you folks. Put the freezer on plywood with castors.
Purely as a trying-to-be-helpful comment: Might want to see if that freezer is the kind that lets you move the hinge to the other side, so the door swings all the way out to the left. Could make it a lot easier to load stuff in en masse.
Build a walk-in freezer or insulate a room or two in the barn like Al did for their freezer room in the workshop-barn but maybe add freezer units in the wall if you want it to be properly below freezing.
You and your wife give exactly what the people want to see, kudos to that 👏 May God continue to give you more knowledge and energy for this massive project
Jason
This was one of your best videos.
Might be time to set up a solar array to power those freezers! Pricey at first, but pays for itself in the long run.
Good for you! We wish you much success. We have 50 5 day old meat birds right now. Harvest coming in 7 weeks. First time we have done a fall batch. Should be fine it stays warm up until Thanksgiving here in Nor Cal. Strictly, for family use. ☺️👍🐥🐥🐥
Thanks! Great video ❤
Glad you liked it! Thanks
I'm with y'all! I'm not a wing eater, either. I vote for the BIG coop for raising the broilers!
The meat birds look great. We had a tough year with our meat chicken, we got the wrong birds from the hatchery and had predictor attaches on our tractors. We started with 40 birds and butchered 9. We will be updating the tractors for next season with better wire and side protectors.
Thanks for sharing!
Never buy a walk-in freezer. As your freezers empty you can unplug them, if one freezer fails you don't loose all your meat.
Jason, check out Pete from just a few acres farm. I believe he uses multiple chest freezers - fairly inexpensive compared to walk-in, no single point failure item, electricity usage is lower due to the units cycling off/on at different times. Always love your content Thank you 👍
haha, "I'm the snack man." Now I have the "skat man" in my head. Thank you.
You keep growing like that man, you are not only going to need more freezers. You are also going to need to hire someone(s).
That’s the plan
I remember you built a walkin freezer (or was it just a refer) for Justin, So you know the technology. One of those horse stalls would be a good size. Go for it.
I don't know what it is but your animals look far superior to other channels I follow, chickens look great, turkeys even better, and pigs look great as well. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
What do you think of a Suskovich(?) chicken train? It would take more chick lifts, but you could move 2 (or more) chicken tractors at the same time. Of course, you'd need to use your mini farm truck or something, but you'd probably be using it anyway to bring out enough food n water when you go to move them anyhow.
Love the way the turkeys sound. So soft and melodic.
Do you have to buy different food for turkeys and chickens???????? Can they occupy the same space???????
Need to turn one of the stalls into a walk-in cooler like you built Justin several years ago might use less electricity than 3 different freezers.
Bbq chicken gizzards. The stores here don't seem to stock them anymore. For a while the local Wal was stocking chicken feet.
Yup Jason, I think your gonna need a bigger freezer xause it sounds like a winner, winner chicken & turkey dinner 🐓🐔🦃🐖
Here in the UK we call that streaky Bacon, we use back bacon as more meat less fat for our breakfasts or sandwiches.
Gods Blessings on all your endeavors! Y'all are the best
Your videos are very peaceful to watch. Your kitchen remodel looks great. Really makes a difference. A before picture and after will be nice to see.
I like Best Buy because when I had my ice cream shop open, I had two big coffin freezers, and one standup. I always bought the extended warranty the biggest one which is a five-year plan and every time they would come and look at the freezer if it went out for whatever reason, they would just come look at it and say OK here’s about to go buy a new freezer at Best Buy now I could get the exact same one or if I upgraded, I would have to pay the difference, but Best Buy has been the best to me in appliances, and I love their warranties..
That was awfully nice of him to go all that distance to put it in the barn for you. We haven't had great luck with Lowes delivery. Do you sell your birds to just locals?
More freezers! Enjoyed your video. 💚
I no longer have my ice cream shop, but I do have my freezers and I still have them full of meat. I empty them out. I fill them up probably in January with sales of wherever they meet at plus my son works for a restaurant depot and we get meat wholesale, but I fill them up and then I don’t buy me reallytill I’ve empty them occasionally some fresh fajitas or something like that but other than that, I try to buy bulk and then just eat out of my freezers
Jason you can always build a huge freezer ? I think you have built 2 or 3 already in the past few years so I know you have the SKILLS 😂😂❤
I believe you have an awesome idea on raising Farm Fresh turkeys and chickens and selling them people nowadays wants to know what's in their food I do
"Just a Few Acres Farm" in NY uses top loading freezers. Probably more energy efficient. I however really like the upright freezer you just got a whole lot. With Aloha...
I wish I lived in NC so I could order. If u ever decide to ship I’ll order then. Good luck. Love your channel. U need to make more videos. Love watching ur family
Fantastic progress everywhere & the land is producing great food now! Way to go! I’m not a fan of my new upright defrosting freezer; it runs away more often than my chest freezer. It is handy for finding things, though. 🤗🇨🇦
Long gone r the days when fridges...freezers would last 20+ years...
Ur lucky to get 2/3 years now...
Lots of work and a grand outcome.... just a thought, you probably have a generator?
Wow! So amazing 👏 🤩 😍
Then here's another question regarding raising chickens, if you get a house for them what are you going to move it with a bull dozer (1000 chickens) or smaller ones? Like Joel Salatin? Love the videos, no pressure, you asked :)
WRONG!!
Warning, DO NOT get a 5 year warranty from Lowes. I purchased a 1500.00 refrigerator with a 5 year warranty from Lowes in Eugene, Oregon back in 2017 . Not long after I purchase it for my new home, it began having problems with it. Making noise and leaking water from the freezer unto my floor after 5 different times of them sending techs out to repair it and months had went by during all this issue, I spoke to the manager of that store. During my 5 year warranty, they had changed warranty companies AND WOULD NOT GIVE ME A refund on this refrigerator and ALL THEY PUT ME THROUGH.
No more Lowes appliances for me!
Speaking of freezers, my parents have had the same freezer in their basement for 40+ yrs and never once have they ever had an issue with it, EVER. I have to find out what the brand is. If I had to guess it may be a GE or whirlpool.
I'm finding the peeps renting land, or a yard in the city, to grow food really interesting.
That bacon sounded delicious all the way over here in Melbourne, Australia
You need what we just put in. It’s a walk in that can be a cooler or a freezer. The guy is coming tomorrow to finish installing it.
Nice
to make tasty chicken wings, devide the wings into three, then wash them in water for five minutes in a large bowl mix cornstarch with a couple of tablespoons of chicken powered booster don't dry the wings and coat them with the mixed powder then deep fry them twice untill golden brown.
Also if you’re placing your deep
Freezer in a garage get one that is built for that. I’ve learned they last longer and do better that way
A ways to go to catch up to .JR.. Last i saw he had like 10 freezers. 😊
We had a mama fox live in a pipe on the driveway, she nabbed a couple of our chickens, took into the pipe to feeder her pups. Chickens have to learn, they must go in at bedtime lol. I know you will do well selling your poultry/beef/pork.
Power surge bars are great for your freezers too
Great video
❤ Jason oh the lost chicken. 3 a.m. I was woken by something chasing a few chickens that were in the coop, busting out the door. Those were found and put back to bed. I was still awake 430/ it happened again except it one of 2 who don't mix in. I found her, lung punctured and tares (?) At her neck and opposite the lung poke. Sat up all night thinking about what😮 could be? Looked where it hopped my 6' fence, scratches 4" across! Any idea?
Also about feed. The feral birds don't get any feed so maybe you can save $ by free ranging half the time
Freezers....at least 6.....(2 for chickens, 1 for turkey & 2 for pig.....plus 1 for MISC/Spare).
Have you considered buying Japanese beetle traps for supplemental feed. I’ve watched videos on YT of homesteaders that do just that.
The more the merrier. God bless.
Another cool video!! Hey Zeeke, don't bite the lady!!
Why don't you build one much like the trailer only larger?! Build a walk in, you know what you're doing!
Make it solar powered with a generater backup!!!
Yummy, I had just eaten a bacon and egg sandwich so wasn’t drooling! Xxx
Big chicken tractor that you can pull forward with the lil truck!
