    A short video on the New Class 800 Intercity Express Train (IET)
    Thank you to Mike Wilcock for allowing us to use his Class 800 video, Please have a look at his great videos at:
    / themichaelwilcock
    The New Class 800 is part of the IEP, Network Rail will deliver infrastructure changes and Agility Trains (a consortium of Hitachi Rail Europe and John Laing Investments) as the Train Service Provider will deliver the Hitachi-made, Hitachi-maintained trains into passenger service each day.
    In July 2012, the DfT signed the contract with Agility Trains. For Hitachi Rail Europe, this meant the start of a programme that will see investment in a state-of-the-art train manufacturing plant in the UK, the creation of 730 jobs in the North East of England, investment in new and refurbished depots across the countries and the design, build, and introduction into service of 122 highly reliable, fully serviceable, modern trains.
    The family of new Class 800 series trains will constitute a step change in capacity, improved reliability and reduced environmental impact on every train journey. Hitachi Rail Europe will carry out the maintenance for the next 27.5 years.
    Our trains are a combination of fully electric and bi-mode trains, the latter have diesel and electric propulsion. The trains can travel at up to 125 mph, in various formations from five to ten cars. IEP will provide an efficient means for passengers to travel on electrified and non-electrified routes, as well as enhancing the customer experience with more modern trains, better interiors and seating arrangements, and of course, faster journey times.
    Total of 866 carriages (122 trains) being manufactured - 369 for the Great Western Main Line and 497 for East Coast Main Line
    Financed through Agility Trains, a consortium of Hitachi and John Laing
    The first trains will run on the Great Western Main Line from 2017 and the East Coast Main Line from 2018
    The total value of the IEP contract will be £5.7bn over 27.5 years. This includes the manufacture and delivery of the trains, new maintenance depots and infrastructure upgrades. The contract is also for the ongoing maintenance and servicing of the fleet
    Hitachi has invested £82 million in a state-of-the-art Rail Vehicle Manufacturing Facility to build the bulk of the trains - 110
    12 pre-series trains are being shipped to the UK from the company’s Kasado Works in Japan
    Key benefits: environmentally efficient, faster trains, reduced wear on the rail infrastructure, increased passenger comfort and capacity (in the morning peak, capacity into King’s Cross will be increased by 28% and into Paddington by 40%)
    42 trains will be electric trains and 80 trains will be bi-mode
    Key priorities for the interior design were: safety, accessibility, capacity and comfort of passengers
    The interiors were designed in consultation with the Train Operating Companies and rail passenger and safety groups
    Hitachi Rail Europe has built strong links with the British and European supply chain

      Unfortunately, it's cost was the big problem, the other company with a proposal, bombaridar, was expecting to have the program run millions over budget. It's a big problem in America and other western countries.

    The 800 series always intended to have one diesel engine per 5 car unit and two per 9 car unit so in event of a power failure the train could get to the next station.The 802 series have three uprated diesel engines per 5 car unit.The diesel engines provide power to electric motors on the axles.

    "They should keep the HSTs."
    I see this kind of comment often. Can someone explain succinctly to an outsider the attraction of travelling on the old trains?

    • @j2m3_raiden5
      @j2m3_raiden5 4 роки тому +3

      The HSTs play a vital memory in people's hearts and since it was introduced it has been a symbol of british engineering. I personally think that people like riding them as they want to get in on old loco-hauled services which are becoming less and less frequent and more multiple units are now operating. Only locos you'll see are class 91s ,the caledonian sleeper, night riveria (forgot how to spell this) and freight lines. Also the HSTs have a long and extensive history on britain's railways

    • @thearsenalmisfit2414
      @thearsenalmisfit2414 3 роки тому

      As a passenger the comfort of the old HST is far superior to the rock hard seats of the class 800s. The more comfort claim is total BS . Plus on GWR no buffet car just a trolley which bh the time it gets to you is always out of what you want. The build quality is crap with loose panels and sliding door that rattle all trip long. And to top it off in 2021 whole fleet taken out of sevice due to hairline cracks being found for inspections.

    Better interiors?? Hmm, like sitting on ironing boards.... Quicker journey time...??... Hmm. Don't think so as has been proven by the recent speed test from Paddington to Reading nearly minute slower than the 40 year old hst they intend replacing, might add that was on electric too. On diesel bi mode don't even come close to hst

    • @DaFinkingOrk
      @DaFinkingOrk 7 років тому

      5mnz7fg That's mostly unavoidable because the narrow British loading gauge, the coaches are long (26m I think). With short (18-20m) coaches and small bits carved off at the coach ends, we can have trains that are quite a bit wider (like class 450). But overall we're kinda stuck with narrow trains in the UK. The massive trains in America and the TGV Duplex look so huge and comfortable, I hope we get a similar big spacious train on HS2 but I'm not holding my breath.
      Btw though, these Hitachi trains still aren't as narrow as pendolinos or voyagers.

    These trains are awful..I saw one last week. The interior looks like a drab office or doctors waiting room, where is the colour? Passenger comfort? 😂😂 those seats look thin and hard and First Class is anything but First Class 😦 Environmentally Friendly? Not really lugging diesel engines around on electric trains because the government failed on its electrification project. The whole thing has been one very expensive cock-up on GWR 🙄 The HST is a far superior train and will be sadly missed.

    • @colintindale9647
      @colintindale9647 7 років тому +4

      Totally agree with you on that. At least ScotRail is listening to its passengers and are going to invest in a referb program to keep on using HSTs on its main intercity services.

    • @EJC-vr5ie
      @EJC-vr5ie 7 років тому +2

      These new trains are nothing but glorified voyagers 😦 I got a feeling a lot of passengers are not going to like travelling in them on GWR...No buffet car either...awful! The quality of service offered to passengers is actually going backwards. The HST is a far superior train for passenger comfort and journey experience and GWR passengers will really miss them 😥 The operator wants to make sure that when these new trains are in service they deliver on reliability. Its a very complex and expensive train, so who knows how it will actually perform in service in the extremes, heat of the summer, snow etc. There is no plan B for GWR as the HST's are going to Scotland and they are only retaining a handful of HST shortened sets...so this trsin needs to hit the ground running with no major issues in service 🤔
