Building the Ultimate Budget Mod Sled: my 151 inch Phazer Build (emphasis on the Budget)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 гру 2017
- This is a short edit I did of my 1985 Phazer build. I removed the stock 116 track and skid and installed a 151 inch skid off a ski-doo summit and a 151 inch track off of a Polaris of some kind. Extended the tunnel and built a new seat. I also changed from a 9 tooth driver to a 7 tooth driver and raised the handlebars but have no video of that. Been riding the sled for a few days and all seems to be working well. Any questions drop em in the comments!!

Your dog looked like he was always there just in case you needed him in the shed.
Yeah she likes to follow me and keep an eye on what I'm doing lol

that is the most awesome sled build video I've ever seen. Hats off to you and your ability!
This is actually a sweet build. I had 2 of these sleds a couple years back and I wish I seen.this video then!!
Mad style on the finished sled!! One of a kind right there!
This is such a snowmobile movie song👍🏼👍🏼 awesome
Mint job budski im impressed
Realy Nice bro !!
awesome work
Thanks!
Pretty damn cool
Absolutely awesome
Mog Bean thanks
Those mod phasers are pretty sweet. If you find get a chain case from a venture it will have reverse and bolt right on with no extra work. I believe they are geared a bit lower too so it would benefit the long track.
Nice build I wish I could to that but don’t have the money. Nice job!👍
very cool dude !!!!!!
Thank you for making good movies on UA-cam all the time.
Duuuuude! So Savage!!
Great, concise video, I really like the shop upgrade though.
They’ve sure evolved over the years
Amazing job you transformed a old snowmobile into a amazing machine
Thanks!
awesome build! you did what Yamaha should have done
Thanks! They sure would have sold a ton of these if they offered them like this!
Nice build btw
Nice work look's good
Thanks!
Thanks. Time to buy a phazer
Mint👌
Awsome
I got a 97 Polaris xc 700 converted to a 155. Customer tunnel and running boards
Nice
I don’t care if a sled is old any sled is a good sled with a little maintenance. I would love to own a snowmobile like that
The old sleds look way better than the new ones imo
U live in Michigan. Cool same here
nice sled that will rip
how much do you raised the bar? and do you need to extend the trotle and brake cable?
Did you keep the right center to center measurement on your new skid as frim the donor sled? It looks like you just bolted on as is... it wont ride very nice if its mounted completely relaxed.
I have a 94 Polaris wedge. Just bought a 151" track and soon going to buy the skid. How much clearance do you have between the track and the top of the tunnel?
Ive always had the idea but never seen it done but now. This is pretty dope. Don't care what people think. What track and frame you use to make it that long? I might do a build this summer too if I can't get a sled going that I wanna ride this year. Happy 2019
Thanks, I used a skid from a 2004 summit 151 and the track is a 151x15x1.75 off a polaris of some kind, not sure the exact model though
Just bored got an 89 phaser 🤘🏻 for 100$ runs and drives with a new track
fuckin amazing
I imagine that dog was like "Don't do that, you're gonna hurt yourself" and "That's not how you take that off you fool" and "Come home now, dinner's getting cold" XD
I try not to think of what shes saying, shes very judgemental lol
My ‘88 Yamaha phazer. It seems like 1 minute its running great and then the next it just bogs down! I’ve clean the carbs 4 times. The only way it’d run better was when I replaced the spark plugs. Even then it would need new plugs every 30 minutes and it just became expensive. I changed the spark plug coil and gaskets. It has amazing compression but it just bogs down! It’ll just shut off after a little bit by itself. I don’t know what the issue is.
Cool build man should post more vids
Thanks! I'll have more vids as soon as we get more snow!
AdamintheMitten I hear ya the snow is sparse over here by Flint.
Ok thanks
where did you find those extended cable for the throtle and the brake ?? and what kind of seat was that originaly ?
You can make all this stuff withsomeijunity
build came out awseome, and you finished the whole thing in 4 minutes which is also super impressive. How much did you have into the entire build?
Well not quite 4 minutes but it was surprising quick! I estimate I've got around $800 into the build.
Looks like its a blast to ride. I think im going to pick one up this summer for some rock banging snow conditions around my area.
it is a lot of fun! that's why I built mine, snow conditions around here have been terrible the last few years, but I don't worry too much about beating on this thing.
What skid did u use and did u have to change cogs?
Chad Ebel the skid is from a 2004 summit 151, changed the drivers from a 9 tooth to a7 tooth to fit the 2 inch lug track
cool video, one question, how do you put wood in your stove is the door on the back by the wall?
Waynevmax it's still about 3 feet from the wall
I’m going to mod my phazer so if I get a sc10 skid I’ll be able to use the stock mounting holes?
Awesome build man! How much does something like this cost to do?
In the mountains it's amazing where a phazer will go. We have 2 91s that the kids ride. Did the 151 power it down alot?
I dropped the driver down a size so the gearing is a little better for the big track. It seems just as quick as it was as a 116 but my top speed is lower. I've got a video of riding it where you can see how fast it runs!
So you swapped the 9 tooth drivers to a 7 tooth, i was planning on doing the same thing on my exciter to have more space for bigger lugs, what lenth lug could fit with a 7 tooth driver? And also the round disks on the side of the driver shaft, did you change these? And for what model? And part number.
With the 7 tooth driver I could fit a 1.75 inch lug in the sled, with a little hammering on the front of the tunnel, I didn't have any round discs on the driver shaft. I believe the part number for mine was 04-108-50, just make sure yours is the same shaft size and track pitch
Where did u get the conversion??
can you build another seat and record it?
I'm building one for my son, would you tell me what did you use to cover the gas tank and attach the seat in the front? This is what I need.... !
Charles Voyer the stock seats have a plastic cover for the tank built into them, I went to the sled salvage yard nearby and found one that had been seperated from the seat and bolted it on. As for holding the new seat on, I used short wood screws.
did you have to mess with gear sizing in chain case to compensate for track length or was swapping 9 to 7 driver enough? awesome build!
I left the chain case alone, and with just swapping drivers it handles that track just fine. Thanks!
Been following some of your builds. Would you say the summit skid was a lot easier to swap into the phaser than the rmk skid? I’m planning on doing a similar build and want to steer myself towards easier swap parts. Thanks!
The summit skid was the easiest, I was able to use the factory front mounting hole.
Hey this looks awesome man! What track did you use and does it bolt right in. I’ve purchased a 1993 exciter 2 long track but would like to mod it amd bro g the ass up abit any help would be awesome.
The rear suspension is from a 2004 summit 151, got lucky and the front bolts lined right up but I had to make new mounts for the rear. The track just needs to be the same width and pitch as your stock one and then you can decide on the height, but if you go much more than an inch you'll need to swap drivers for a smaller size
How much did it cost to build the whole thing
you should have showed us more on the build like paint and the part u forgot to miss but other than that u got my like
Looking at doing the same thing with a 87 Phazer what skis did you use?
The Shekeler I'm still using the factory skis
love the vids of the ol' phazer which inspired me to make one of my own but with a srv540. my only snag i have right now is how did you determine the front mounting bolts for the new skid? looks like you did the original holes but my track wont be tight if i used them. got a 2003 summit 144 skid
I put the track on the driver's and put the skid in to determine where to put the front holes, they got lucky on this sled and lined right up with the front ones. On my 600 they didn't line up but I still used the same technique
@@adaminthemitten8940 okay. I loosened the track tensioner all the way and stretched the skid back to determine the front holes. Is that correct?
@@chrisbates3422 I would loosen it about 80% but yeah that's how I did it
@@adaminthemitten8940 thanks for the help!
@@chrisbates3422 how is your srv mod coming. Id love to make an srv a long track but i have just the one restored and dont want to f it up. Need to find another to experiment with.
Is there a reason for having the front forks scissors facing backwards? I saw a few guys do this and never knew why
The first phazers were like this, the phazer 2 had them going forward
what did you do for the throttle and break cable?
Throttle cable is factory, brake cable is off a bravo 250 if I remember correctly
Do you guys have any links to the driver we can use on this build since i believe we can use 151 2.52 pitch?
The driver I used was a Kimpex 04-108-50. 7 tooth, 2.52 pitch 25mm shaft. If you search the part number you'll find it in a few places.
Probably used the old shaft and just swapped the driver I assume ?
yup, pressed the old drivers off and pressed the new ones on
How long was the tunnel that you cut off of the other Phazer
Ethan Richert the donor sled was the same length, I just cut about 2 feet of the tunnel off
Is phazer 2 more desirable? Im not familiar with the front suspension
The phazer 2 has a little wider ski stance and the steering linkage is a little different, but for the most part they are the same
How did you get the front of the seat to mount up? I'd like to do this same seat mod.
Originally I just had the front of the seat screwed to the plastic tank cover from the inside of the tank cover. However this broke fairly quickly. Later on I redid it with a front bar like my other 2 sleds
Did you mount the new skid farther back or use the stock holes and just make a drop bracket for the back?
Used the stock holes and made a bracket for the back
I’m thinking on doing the same thing! What’s the downside to keeping the 9 tooth on?
There's 2 downsides, one is that it takes more power to turn the track using the bigger driver. The other is that without some major tunnel modifications (which in actually doing on my new sled for this year) you cant fit much over an inch lug without hitting the front of the tunnel
The last Phazer I had ended up in the trees. Cracked the helmet I was wearing and dislocated my shoulder. Good times.
Mine too, hit a snowbank 70mph flew a good 30 ft snapped the top off 1 pine tree and landed in another, drove that thing home an for another 4 years after wide open the whole time because the track was bald, sold it because I'm stupid
Do you find that it has too much downpressure on your steering? I have a 154 under mine as well and I'm debating raising the skid but I'm worried it will shift too much weight to the skis. Also- I love your seat setup. I may need to copy that. Off to AliExpress I go.
It does seem to dive pretty easy if I don't keep my weight back, but the front end still raises if I get into the throttle so it's not too bad
I'm getting a Phazer to turn into a long track sled. That motor and drivetrain is all stock except for the driver change? The one I'm doing is a 2000's Phazer 500, so the trailing arm suspension. Thought about doing a 136, but maybe a 144 if yours can turn the 151 no problem.
Yeah all stock except for the drivers and muffler. It runs a 151 just fine but I think those trailing arm phazers are a bit heavier so that might make yours a little slower
Every frigger and their mom is doing this.... im friggin gonna do it too lol
Did you switch the drivers around
Lawrence Stewart yes, went from a 9 tooth to a 7 tooth
Nice one. I'm finishing off a PZ 151 and your headlight is the best solution I've seen yet. Would you mind telling details?
Thanks. My headlight is just an 8 inch LED bar I bought off of amazon, unfortunately it didn't last long. I seem to be having voltage regulator problems. I disconnected the factory bright/dim switch and installed a toggle switch so that the light is just on or off.
I think it's because it would be getting ac power instead of DC you can get converters though
That sounds like a good theory, This sled was electric start originally so I actually planned on putting a battery in it and connecting the light right to that, that should fix it too. Thanks for the input!
Did the skid just bolt on ? What year an size is it?
It bolted right into the front holes. It is from a 2004 skidoo summit 151
What year is that sled an is the track 16” wide
85 and it's 15 wide
Nice job. Did you just reuse the front bolt holes?
Yeah, luckily that skid lined up perfectly with the original front holes
Did you make the gas tank cover?
The gas tank cover is just the plastic shell that's in the front of the seat. I just painted it black
Hey there, did you extend the track? And how difficult was it... I think retrofitting is the way to go. It's cool!
Devin Cristobal yes I did, went from 116 inches to 151 inches. It was actually super easy, had to swap drivers to account for the higher lugs, but the new skid I used bolted right into the original front mounting holes and then I just made rear mounts from some plates of aluminum.
That's wicked man, hope to build something like this in the near future. Thanks for the inspiration
Did the summit skid bolt up exactly
The front bolts went in the factory phazer holes, but I had to make new brackets for the rear mounts
Want to do this to one of my sleds.. how much did it cost?
I probably have $1000 into it, and that includes the sled which I bought for $100
whats the thickness of the brackets for the rear skid mount?
I used 1/4 inch aluminum, seems to be holding up just fine
@@adaminthemitten8940 thanks
You think this would work for a 79 srx 440? I haven't seen anybody do it yet
I've got a cousin with an Exciter 440 that he put a different suspension under, not too hard
so you used a 2004 ski-doo summit skid and that bolted right up in the front? (same bolt holes) no cutting or trim of the front of the rails?? and also whats the exact size track you got? 151x?? and will any pitch driver fit on the Yamaha shaft? just asking if i could get any (brand) or pitch doesn't really matter what its off of that pitch driver i can just buy and press on?
Yeah same bolt holes and the track is a 151x1.75. I used that pitch because I knew I could get drivers for it, if you could find drivers in a different pitch for that size shaft I see no reason they wouldn't work
@@adaminthemitten8940 awesome thank you! and whats the track 15" wide same as stock?
151 x 15 x 1.75 what your running
@@carlstephens5785 yes
AdamintheMitten thanks again!!
How did u switch the drives?
With a hydraulic press
How did you take the track off
Had to take the chain case apart and take the driver shaft out
Nice work. How tall are those risers?
Surfer qci thanks, I added about 5 inches of height compared to the stock handlebars
Does it have enough power to go in some difucult place ?
Touchette Vincent I haven't been able to do much technical riding with it because of a lack of snow but it had plenty of power. Hoping to take it to some hills soon!
What's top speed
YAMAHA PZ480 Good😃⤴️⤴️
u basically took an rmk and put it on a phaser
Nice
Hey, awesome build. I have a 1992 excited, basically body wise same machine. What skid did you use for this? I saw that u used a summit. I'd like to do the same.. did your mod change the pitch at all?.. or were you able to use the original drive wheels/shaft.?
The skid is off a 2004 skidoo summit, I kept the same pitch but got smaller drive wheels to fit the bigger track in the tunnel
@@adaminthemitten8940 ah k..and you said that you changed one of the gears in the case as well?
@@GASSmallEngine I didnt change any, mine is 17 tooth small gear and 27 tooth big gear
@@adaminthemitten8940 okay..and did you get a completely different shaft or did you get the smaller ones pressed on?
@@GASSmallEngine I just pressed the smaller wheels onto the original phazer shaft
Where did you get the seat
I got it from a powersports junkyard, I think it's off of a chinese 4 wheeler
So what do you think it weighs and did you gear it down and clutch it up any? Is that a 540?
Not sure how much it weighs, I'd say its similar to stock weight. The only gearing change I made was the driver size. I left the clutch and chain sprockets alone
@@adaminthemitten8940 Ohh very nice! How does it do in the deep snow? My first sled ever, back in the day was an SRV 540.
@@gumballer133 it does really good in deep snow, the 485 moves that track better than even I expected

Do u have a video of u riding it
I've got a couple of them, check out the channel
Hey where did you find the 151 track did it come off another phazer ?
I found it on ebay, I just made sure it was the same width and pitch as my drivers
AdamintheMitten nice is there any others on eBay I wanna pick up a phazer now they look so throw back I love em
AdamintheMitten is your forsale lol ? I’m in Toronto
@@Chino_drift mines not for sale, they are pretty easy to find on marketplace though
What seat is that?
The best I can tell it's off one of those cheap Chinese mini quads, I dug it out of a snow drift in the junk yard so I'm not 100% certain where it came from
When you put the skid on what all did you have to do?
The only mod I had to make for the skid was making rear mounts, I used the factory front mounts. I had to trim the mounting points on the skid too I guess, so that it fit in the tunnel
AdamintheMitten did you have to change any gearing
@@iantaylor4419 I did not change any gearing but I put smaller 7 tooth drivers on it
AdamintheMitten what kind of skid did you use
@@iantaylor4419 it's out of a 2004 skidoo summit
How much did it cost in total?
I dont have an exact number but I would say around $1500
And this is do able to a phazer 2 right
Yes, only difference is the front suspension
so will the stock driver run the 151 track?
As long as the track has the same pitch it will drive it. I used a smaller driver to get better gearing and so the paddles wouldn't hit the tunnel
Thanks for the reply! Im a noob to snowmobiles but what was the smaller driver off of?
@@boobooki773fuk I ordered them new online, cant remember where from though. Get your specs from the old ones and do some searching and you'll find them. Think I paid $14 a piece for them.
