Diesel AND 4X4? Such Dodge/Mitsubishis were not unheard of back in my day, but they were somewhat rare. I can recall four such configurations and they were all contractor owned and operated work trucks. Two had standard beds while the other two had custom built "tool beds". Those little trucks went where larger, V-6 and V-8 powered trucks could not. Back then mini trucks, as they were referred to, only came with 4X4 if the buyer also purchased a "4X4 Dealer Installed Kit". In our area the 4X4 Chevy LUV was the big seller followed by the Ford Courier and lastly the D50 with the diesel being the most common engine found in that truck.

I bought one of those brand new in 1984 !! Sure miss it. Best advise drain all the fuel and put in fresh. Run it for a bit before changing the fuel filter. I got awesome fuel milage with mine !!! 35 mpg. all the time!! Make sure to cycle the glow plugs a couple times when cold !! Enjoy it

This same Mitsubishi 4d55 is what was used in the ford rangers 85-87 and probably the same transmission and transfer case too.
My dream is to find the very lucrative and rare 4d55 bronco II, they were in fact made just not many people checked that off.
Oh and if you ever need engine parts, the 4d56 uses the same block and that has been in production up to 2016, so you could really make a little monster with parts that fit right into your existing block.

Since that is a timing belt engine, I would replace the timing belt and belt hardware immediately. I'd also do the water pump.
It would probably be good to have a set of new diesel fuel filters. Maybe get them from Beck/Arnley, they usually relabel OES filters. I like that, filters from 1980s Japanese cars were built like tanks.
