I've listened to this song hundreds of times, but everytime no matter where I am or what I'm doing when 2:41 hits I lose all track of reality and are transported to Djent heaven
Cause this was new and fucking groundbreaking and now bands just make weird chuggy periphery shit that all sounds pretty similar and bland despite the crazy amounts of technicality they put behind it.
VoM performing live and opening with Pillars into Crawl Back was sooooo good. Miss this time in music, thankful to have the ability to listen to their old music, even when they smashed rap into their demos, it was NUTTY
I remember when I pulled into work blasting this song. I'm usually the first one that would arrive before everyone else. The new hire came early trying to score brownie points or something, idk. 2:14 to 2:24 was playing where the song goes on about not feeling guilt or shame and the new hire didn't know how to react xD. I greeted the guy with a friendly smile and a "How are ya!" I still think that he believes i have some screws loose. I just love this band.
that's so cool. i'm really glad you enjoy it. veil of maya is one of the greatest bands of all time in my opinion. i love alicia keys, fleetwood mac, wu-tang, old jay-z, etc. but i always try to spread the really top notch stuff around to people who don't listen to metal. always so cool when someone likes it
+Malcefium Mike What do you mean what happened? They're doing much better now than they ever have. Matriarch is one of their best albums in my opinion, and I've been following Veil of Maya since I first heard "We Bow In It's Aura" a couple of years back. The clean vocals in Matriarch add more diversity and gives their music a fuller sound (not to mention the new vocalist has some brutal dirty vocals as well).
+Malcefium Mike Fanboy? Lol I'm a musician that appreciates bands' work and music in general. Try playing and producing the exact same style for several albums. Not only will fans get bored of it, but the composer as well. The only "fanboy" here is you for complaining about Veil's change instead of musically embracing it for what it is.
This was when i fell in love with this band. I loved the coorosive release as well too, but this was their best work. I appreciate the new stuff but its not the same as this. This is straight fire!
Tim Haines Ya this guy has the sickest of these kind of riffs. No one else does it like him. His staccato thinking is unmatched. It's fucking ridiculous how every single time he break into one of those the groove is simply insane. And how the band rolls them out like a nail rug makes them even better.
I was having time of my life listening to Green day and all back in 2011 when I was in 10th class 😅. Had I listened to this piece of holy djent , I would have been a djent master today 🙏
1JokeRCSS such a groovy riff man, Mark sure knows how to make the grooviest of them all, not to mention dude rips some brutal af and melodic riffs in their newer album
@Stickgoncraz Actually, many parts of catch 33 truly are random and never resolve into actual time signatures. This was basically stated by frederick of Meshuggah himself when asked why they never played the entire catch 33 live. There is no such term as "unnatural time signatures"; the term, as far as I know, is polymeter. For example, 7/8 followed by 11/8 phrase resolves to 4/4 after 2.5 measures and is polymetric. Most importantly it sounds awesome and thats all that matters!
Just FYI catch 33 sounds repetative but actually the guitar parts are actually random throughout the entire thing. The album almost hypnotizes you into thinking what you hear is repeating over and over which is why it is so trippy. This is why the band never played any of it live because it was too hard to memorize a 50 minute ever changing riff!!!!
I read this comment and started waited for 2:42 and i kinda got distracted on another page, then i started bobbing my head like crazy and was like , oh shit this must be the breakdown:P
I watched them play right after "After The Burial", and the vocalist was terrible... I've seen veil of maya several times before and loved it. But this time just wasn't the same... I was disappointed. Thank god ATB was there to make my night
for the first part its still technically 4/4, just marc plays a measure of 4/4 then a measure 19/16. that second measure is basically another 4/4 with 3 added 16th notes (two of them picked, one a rest) this odd addition causes the guitars to 'play against' the drums for the next repeats and so on. he plays that about 4 times before it changes. thats a lot of VoM's stuff though. a weird phrase repeated over the 4/4 drums
You guys need to get over the fact that they've changed a little bit. They tried the whole deathcore thing and it got stale so they added some melody. All of their albums are fantastic for different reasons. I don't see how they "sold out" with Matriarch. Might be their best album.
I'm 29, this song RIPS just as hard as when I came across it at 17. Favorite VOM song of all time. Long live Maya
r u me
I'm u
This band was so far ahead of its time man. This sound defined so many different bands.
Imagine coming up with such a unique sound you pioneer an entire new genre of music! You said it right broski
I've listened to this song hundreds of times, but everytime no matter where I am or what I'm doing when 2:41 hits I lose all track of reality and are transported to Djent heaven
I always do the weirdest headbang youv ever seen at that part.
Same. Even after all these years.
Bruh, same.
literally just happened to me lmfao
i cant stop laughing at these comments literally a wall of djent at 2:41
WHY DOES THIS STILL SLAP SO HARD?!?!?!
cause this shit is the devil and that's great
Cause this was new and fucking groundbreaking and now bands just make weird chuggy periphery shit that all sounds pretty similar and bland despite the crazy amounts of technicality they put behind it.
@@areyoujelton check out a Wake in Providence album black sun blood moon
i havent listened to this album in like 2 years at least and i still remember every single note and word. so timeless. 18 year old me would be proud
Old shit is always louder, more intense and more raw when it comes to 2000's bands, nowadays they sound very overpulished and safe tho.
Best Singer this band ever had.....it was like peanut butter and jelly..... :(
Agreed.. saw them live. Just wow
Double decker PB and J
With a glass of 2% milk

Agreed my man. I quit listening once they began to clean sing. Im not against clean singing, but dont do it 5 albums later or whatever.
VoM performing live and opening with Pillars into Crawl Back was sooooo good. Miss this time in music, thankful to have the ability to listen to their old music, even when they smashed rap into their demos, it was NUTTY
This shit still hits different than any technical metalcore that comes out nowadays
This is technical deathcore, but I agree
@@ICEESAreFuckinGoodI believe it's technical sexcore
You can't crawl back
Their drummer went so hard for no reason.
BRING THIS SOUND BACK
BRO BRING IT BACK NOW
for real the drummer hits diff so good

I love all their albums , but this one is just a true beauty
2:42 is probably one of the greatest breakdowns in metal. this will always be my favorite album
i spent 1 hr at work trying to memorize this breakdown and my boss was none the wiser. i can now tap the breakdown like a pro!
one of the best deathcore songs of all the fucking time
that's so cool. i'm really glad you enjoy it. veil of maya is one of the greatest bands of all time in my opinion. i love alicia keys, fleetwood mac, wu-tang, old jay-z, etc. but i always try to spread the really top notch stuff around to people who don't listen to metal. always so cool when someone likes it
2:41 is still one of the NASTIEST breakdowns ever conceived.
Wtf happened to VoM?
+Malcefium Mike it's torn away
mazedmarky It's Torn Away is good af as well. And VoM has been torn away.. v.v
+Malcefium Mike What do you mean what happened? They're doing much better now than they ever have. 2:41 sickest breakdown ever.

I don't know if it's the mix or something but this album will never age

that part goes fucking hard, I'm with ya bro
Such a fucking pattern. It makes me want to backfist a toddler
1:16 is my favorite
Yeah, the breakdown is actually the worst part of the song IMO. I like the actual song parts of Veil of Maya a lot more.
Yes sir! 🤘 I love both parts
Chicago and Australia make the sickest heavy music. \m/

You can feel it coming the whole track but you really feel it's presence creeping in at 2:16.. \m/
Encore aujourd'hui, ça bûche ! Bien meilleur qu'une bonne majorité du métal core des temps modernes. C'est très avant-gardiste comme style !
i love how every song by veil of maya is one big breakdown. xD
I absolutely love the breakdown in this song.
this album got me into djent and later prog metal. i'm grateful for that.
Back when the metal scene wasn't saturated to shit with metalcore djent and leadsingers who use to just scream but now think they can do clean vocals.

saw this band so many times, and now they never swing by here :C
I am back because I am seriously disappointed by the new Veil of Maya. I will now cry while listening to their old uniquer style.

Yeah they’re generic periphery rip offs now.
I crave the quads in that break. Genuinely crave them.
FUCK YES.
Also, I don't think music like this would exist without Meshuggah's influence. 2:40 and on is amazing, and reminds me of the ol' 'shuggah.
Mowgli and Unbreakable have the best examples of this.
@level5barbarian sooooooo amazing
the drums in the intro gave me a chub. the rest of the song took it from there.
Deathcore of Maya
