I've been following Senri for years now and have watched many other drummers. When you listen to the rest and then play any cut from Senri, you immediately you can hear and feel the difference. She is just simply phenomenal
You summed it up. I am only listening to jazz/fusion because of musicians like Senri, Simon Phillips and Greg Howe. They are musicians that can step beyond the limitations of their genre.
Senri is probably my favourite at the moment. The way she absolutely kills the impossible chops and just breaks into a huge grin afterwards like it was no biggie never gets old.
I have to say what I LOVE most about this video and performance by Senri. It is the way the drum part and construction of the piece musically illustrate the concept of "adventure." The principle sequence is basically a simple 4/4 structure with a fill every fourth measure. Pretty standard stuff. But the fill does not end on 1, it ends on the eighth note after it, almost as if the drums are going to leave the song behind. She quickly pulls it back, though, by hitting the snare on 2 to return to the structure. Really brilliant stuff. She even accents this by playing the china crash on the same eighth note in the third measure each pass... again, creating a feeling of things maybe getting out of control. I also enjoy some of the stops in the song, almost like little surprises that leave you wondering what is coming next. Senri is really next level. I feel like she is conceptualizing rhythm in abstract ways that haven't been heard before, at least by me. I don't know that I have ever enjoyed listening to somebody play the drums more.
I love how powerfully she plays. I have too often seen drummers who seem to think that being the loudest drummer is a sign of greatness; as in I can play louder than you so I am better than you. They tend to be hulking brutes who hit as hard as they can with very little internal dynamics. Senri proves one doesn't need to have huge muscles to have a huge sound. Her polished technique allows her to pull out massive sounds out of her drums. It's all about velocity, not how hard you hit. In fact, I've seen drummers who hit so hard they wind up choking the drum. Mainly because using brute strength tends to make a player grip the sticks with more tension and hit into the drum which doesn't allow the drum head to vibrate freely. In one or the few actual lessons I took, my teacher---a woman who also could play very loud as well all other dynamic ranges---talked about letting the sticks come off the head to draw out the sound. That made a big difference in my playing. Not that I've reached Senri's level of control or even that of my teacher. I'm still working on that many years after that lesson. Thanks, Andrew.
it is funny, I had a lesson with my drum teacher recently where we touched upon this very subject briefly. It was practicing "open" single strokes (Tommy Igoes Lifetime workout), so just use the rebound and no fingers at all. I mean even the stick itself has a frequency that can add to the tone. try it out! Try gripping your stick fully and hit the palm of your hand. then do the same, but with the stick dangling loosely in your hand. Might take a few tries, but there should be a difference in sound and also feel.
Wanna see a lot of power coming from a tiny drummer? Although I dont think she's quite at the level of Senri she's still amazing. Check out Junna on UA-cam. One of the best performers (if not the best) I've ever seen. She put's on an amazing show!

Most people would hear something like this and think to themselves: " Oh yeah, she's practiced a lot" This may be very true; those chops and dynamics are amazing BUT to be able to perform them as a whole, in the context of a song requires something extra: a 'feel'. This 'feel' (I believe), is a separate entity to jamming or practicing itself and it takes a LONG time to develop, if not at least half as long as she's been playing drums. Some drummers are great and are tight etc, but to see and hear a drummer like this, and experience her 'feel' is something other-worldly. I would be entertained by listening to her tap her fingers on the corner of a coffee table. Nice video, Andrew, I really enjoyed this one. :)

So the adventure started, Gavin Harrison I liked and listened to dozens of times, and then I arrived at the little bundle of energy, Yoyo, playing Burn, a song I was very familiar with. That progressed, naturally to Senri, and that was it, I was hooked. I've listened to dozens of other drummers here, and on Drumeo, for example, and slowly begun to understand what I'm hearing, there are some amazing players out there, but at the end of the day if somebody said you can only listed to one drummer then its her by a country mile, have no idea of what it is but she just plays in a way that connects with me.

If you want to understand how Senri Kawaguchi could develop into an excellent drummer at a very early age. The answer is talent, top level teaching and practice, practice, practice. In this clip from when Senri was only 12 years old, you can see her enjoying drumming together with her fantastic teacher Kozo Suganuma: ua-cam.com/video/HJ6A1No9NwA/v-deo.html
From Wikipedia: In 2010, at the age of 13, she became one of the youngest drummers, and only the second Japanese drummer after Akira Jimbo to be added to the Drummerworld list of top 500 drummers. Subsequent to that, as you know, Yoyoka claimed that honor at Age11.
Yoyoka is absolutely great and i like her so much i've watched most of her videos. Although I still have to say there is no way she's on senri's level.
@@nst.pierre9800 I've watched all 211 vids. Agree. She's not on Senri's level YET! The following is from one of my other posts. Nothing I say here is to diminish Senri’s abilities, she is so awesome and extremely advanced in her skill level. And I hate to compare one to another to say one is better than the other. But after watching this ("Senri's childhood Archives (ages 6 to 10 years old) 幼い頃の千里"ua-cam.com/video/24HM6KpY9X4/v-deo.html (from 2012)), it seems that Yoyoka may have way more potential than I thought. When you compare age to age, it is very clear that Yoyoka is more advanced at this stage than Senri was at the same respective ages. Senri’s current jazz fusion solos have to be some of the best in the world, so creative and engaging. Yoyoka seems to be on track to surpass that in the next 10 years. Can’t wait to see what happens with both these wonderful young ladies. Senri hasn’t maxed out for sure, so there’s no idea what she will be doing in 10 years. Both will be doing something that no one ever imagined is even possible for sure. GO GIRLS!!!
@@Glen.Black. These are great points and I agree with most of what you said. Although many things can effect your progress as a musician. Just because Yoyoka is further along at her age than Senri was at the same age doesn't necessarily mean that shes going to surpass Senri by the time she's 23 (or even earlier). Many factors effect the past, present and future progression of these two. It can go either way. One things for sure. They sure will be fun to watch. Also more than likely at a certain point when someone is that unbelievably good comparing them to another that is also unbelievably good becomes a matter of preference and opinion. I'm a guitar player so let me say this. It's like comparing Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton for blues rock. Or Steve Vai and Joe satriani for shredding and metal.
@@nst.pierre9800 Exactly. Agree with all that! The important thing is, are they having fun, and it is very clear that they both are (at least now)! Hopefully they are both able to make a career out of it (if they want to). Yoyoka has the desire to travel and play with other musicians, but she also has other interests. I selfishly hope she continues to ENJOY playing drums.
@@Glen.Black. I know Yoyoka's parents are performers too and I think she was raised in music and has shown an intense love for music since the beginning and that love doesn't seem to be fading. With everything that kids have to deal with and not having so much time for herself, now would be the time that she would slow down or quit. Since it doesn't look like she will and the fact that her parents have connections in the business,it looks like she's really gonna be going places.
I keep wondering how Senri plans to top this gem of a favourite of mine. Senri seemingly lagging behind the synthesizer at the start is simply so clever. I would suggest Andrew practise rearranging his facial muscles for a dedicated Senri Kawaguchi stank face!😃🤔 One of the better reaction videos around.
I had to buy the Kiyo*Sen album Trick Or Treat from which this song comes. Her keyboardist is 30 years older than her but they have a great chemistry, and used the right studio help to round out the album. So many great tracks on that record.
Senri is the best female drummer in the world. Totally in a class by herself. She is kind of like a cross between Joe Morello and Jeff Porcaro. She has already proven that she can play any type of music, but I can't get into what she likes. I love to watch her play, but other than her, I don't bother. But, if she likes this, she likes it. I would like to see her go back to playing rock, but this type of music makes her happy. Perfect pocket in whatever music she drums to.
yea Senri came along just great, remember subbing her on youtube and niconico all the way back when i got into drumcovers and she frequently appeared for the k-on drumcovers. must been 2010? 2011? how much older you feel seeing such a talent growing up in plain sight >.< same with Fumie Abe and where she ended up...bloody hell and i still stuggle with my rolls >.
Hello andrew I've watched 9 preformance's of senri I like this one the best so far she's an awsome drummer with out a doubt. I wish she would do some more rock drumming. Enjoyed your expret commentary as always thanks .😎
Big thanks Andrew. Remember my remarks at the first video. She can play it all. Senri is like watching a beautiful painting, so much feel and depth. It never gets dull. Comparing her with Kanade and Yoyoka at the age of 11/12, in my opinion she was not the best of the three, now she is. If the other two will have the same development, Japanese female drumming will be in the upper league of drumming as a whole for years to come. You had a question if she also was playing bass. No she was not. What I can tell you is that she has performed a session with imho the best on bass (male or female) being Mohini Dey. A Japanese and Indian diamond rubbing eachother musically and let eachother shine like the 'Tenpi' on mount Fuji.
I just love it when Senri gets a reaction. Such chops and such a musical approach and she's been doing this since I think she was six. Well that's OK I made some pretty cool stuff with TinkerToys when I was six.
“Sen-ree,” not “Sen-RAI.” Senri’s drumming combines awesome technical skills with great musicality. She’s one of the best drummers I’ve ever seen. For a totally different style of Japanese female drumming, check out the fearsome Junna’s cover of “Through the Fire and Flames,” Her joy is infectious and her ferocity is frightening.
Senri pronounces it like Sandy when she speaks (you can here her in the intro on this video - ua-cam.com/video/JF5L4eJ7ekQ/v-deo.html ) , so I totally give up.
Its if she uses her high hat as a metronome , I wasn't a big fan of this type of music, But I can say I listen to Senri at home and in my car all the time now. and am exploring more into jazz more and more, Thank u sweet girl.
A lot of that is down to playing with Kiyomi Otaka who transcribed a lot of ELP's scores for the Japanese market. Adventure is one of her compositions from the 2002 Paragraph album. ua-cam.com/video/b9ysnyiZlfM/v-deo.html
Ah! The big sister of the Japanese Drum Girls. Yes, I really wonder how Japan is producing so many of these female drummers of such exquisite talent, but I'm not complaining. Glad you reacted to this performance by Ms Kawaguchi. (Btw, it's pronounced "Senree". Only the Americans could possibly corrupt the letter "i" to such a point where many are now mispronouncing names of people and places. Yes, Iraq, Iran and Ikea are SUPPOSED to be pronounced as "Ee-raak", "Ee-raan" and "Ee-kay-ya", but guess who would go wreck those names. But I digress). I do hope you get more requests for her. She's such a joy to watch and hear. Many thanks for educating us on the finer points of her insanely skillful drumming.
Ahh ! goodonya maaate ! , been a Senri devotee for I don't know how many years , {10-12} at least. hang on a minute while I grab coffee , now let's go .> OOPS ! nearly forgot the "good " headphones .
That could easily be car chase soundtrack in a movie. I’ll have this music ready to do domestic things aggressively now. Also Andrew you got me with, you are tearing me apart!! ....lisa. 🤣🤣🤣
I haven't watched a lot of Senri's stuff (because I'm just not that into Jazz/Fusion). I know she has mad skills! Also, not particularly a huge fan of drum solos, but I found this one to captivating! As a guitarist I have wondered why I love Senri's playing so much. There are a few (not too many) male drummers that may be more technically proficient than her but they have one disadvantage. Testosterone. lol Male ego often causes male drummers to try and be too technical and often hit too hard, rather than play what suites the actual piece they are adding to. That's right, the drums like all instruments is only a part of several instruments combined to create a complete song. Us blokes tend to forget that and unfortunately our ego gets in the way. Senri, on the other hand has mastered this and is the reason why I love listening to her playing. Her drumming always seems to compliment the piece she plays perfectly. Maybe we also need more female guitar players. lol
As a guitar player myself I absolutely agree. If you want to see an amazing female guitar player(maybe the best I've heard) check out Tina S. As for an amazing female teen guitar player check out Lisa X she's absolutely mind blowing!
@@nst.pierre9800 Thanks, yes I have heard Tina but would love to hear her play live. I am sure this will change soon. Assuming that you enjoy the shredding style Guthrie Govan is the best that I have heard. In fact he can play anything. Enjoy ua-cam.com/video/y8NRJ-dfr4Y/v-deo.html
@@vietnguyen4312 I respect your opinion but I have to disagree. Tina S and LisaX are both far beyond merely "very good". Maybe they aren't quite what Senri does for the drums but not very far off either (imo). Btw I am aware of guthrie goven. He and Paul Gilbert (which she is a student of) are huge inspirations of Lisa X. On a side note if you aren't already aware of him you absolutely need to check out Ichika Nito. He is very unique and tremendous on the guitar.

They were so young back then but played Some Skunk Funk by Brecker Brothers so well together. It was quite the battle between them. BTW, just discovered your channel and watched a bunch of videos. Look forward to more. Subscribed!
Japanese female drmmers and percussionists are renowned for their technical excellence, what's different about Senri Kawaguchi is that she hits like a taiko drummer, she gets that awesome sound because she hits harder than most male drummers with that friendly smile of hers and without even breaking a sweat. It's just awesome.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I like some others would love to see her and Anika play together like with Sarah, but I am not going to hold my breath. Perhaps their styles are to divergent. Still waiting for that Billy Cobham moment, for that i am not gonna hold my breath either. Take Care.
@@rockingrandma4711 sorry youre wrong . I speak Japanese and was engaged to a Japanese woman for years. Do you misunderstand how "ree" sounds? Here's an example. Like the "ree" in reese's. It is %100 how you pronounce it. "Sen" as in sentence and "ree" as in reese's.
@@nst.pierre9800 I shouldn't have ask you to ask ANY Japanese. Some of them don't know the nitty-gritty of weird spelling Japanese in Roman letters. Japanese is often difficult to spell in Roman letters and often times it makes a big difference in meaning depending on using short or long sound. For example, obasan means aunts, if you make it long sound like obaasan, that means grandma. I'm trying to select a word that's well- known worldwide such as Mount Fuji. You don't pronounce Fujee. I don't know what you means by Jananese don't have short sound!?!? But, I can tell you in 100% certainty that you don't pronounce Senri as Senree in long ee sound. NO REESE peanut butter!
I would suggest Andrew practise rearranging his facial muscles for a dedicated Senri Kawaguchi stank face!😃🤔
One of the better reaction videos around.
I had to buy the Kiyo*Sen album Trick Or Treat from which this song comes. Her keyboardist is 30 years older than her but they have a great chemistry, and used the right studio help to round out the album. So many great tracks on that record.
Check out her drum teacher Mr Kozo Suganuma too. A beast as well. He would really be proud of Senri.
Perfect.
So good Carlos!
The spirit of Buddy Rich is alive in Senri.
Oh Lord I hope not.
Again, I have to say... fluid!
She's fantastic.
yea Senri came along just great, remember subbing her on youtube and niconico all the way back when i got into drumcovers and she frequently appeared for the k-on drumcovers. must been 2010? 2011? how much older you feel seeing such a talent growing up in plain sight >.< same with Fumie Abe and where she ended up...bloody hell and i still stuggle with my rolls >.
She also plays the piano, guitar, and violin and the bass
Amazing !!!!
Yes Mario!
jazz/fusion is where music is today
It seems to be William :)
I just love it when Senri gets a reaction. Such chops and such a musical approach and she's been doing this since I think she was six. Well that's OK I made some pretty cool stuff with TinkerToys when I was six.
Oh man... check out Tatsuya Yoshida playing with Koenji Hyakkei. He is a monster. And so is Senri :) Cheers from Seattle!
Thanks Greg!
I've already done that Junna reaction!
Senri pronounces it like Sandy when she speaks (you can here her in the intro on this video - ua-cam.com/video/JF5L4eJ7ekQ/v-deo.html ) , so I totally give up.
I am a fan of Junna's too. "Ferocity" sums her up. Plain old Intensity cowers in the corner when she's drumming.
Ther best part is the smile on her face the whole time!
Took a 5 year break to follow Senri & Kanade nice to see you all here at last!
I’m impressed
SENRI IS A MONSTER !!!!!!!
Its if she uses her high hat as a metronome , I wasn't a big fan of this type of music, But I can say I listen to Senri at home and in my car all the time now. and am exploring more into jazz more and more, Thank u sweet girl.
Great to hear Gregory
So much space in those flams 🤯
I get a ELP/Carl Palmer feel from it.
A lot of that is down to playing with Kiyomi Otaka who transcribed a lot of ELP's scores for the Japanese market. Adventure is one of her compositions from the 2002 Paragraph album. ua-cam.com/video/b9ysnyiZlfM/v-deo.html
give me Senri's technicality and Junna's attitude and style and you'd almost have the perfect drummer, lol love 'em both.
🙌
Senri had a great teacher Kozo Suganuma!! R.I.P. Kozo you have first row on a drummers heaven!!
Mesmerizing.
Yee Haa Love her
You should take a listen to Senri Kawaguchi Triangle (band) ... amazing. Nice to see her in a "band" environment as well.
Those girls are awesome "bunny ears"
Completo absurdo!
Outstanding performance. Reminds me of the great Billy Cobham in some ways.
The more raw fusion parts is quite similar to the music of Morgan Ågren and Mats Öberg. However this is very impressive all through! =)
Glad you liked it Andreas
Ahh ! goodonya maaate ! , been a Senri devotee for
I don't know how many years , {10-12} at least.
hang on a minute while I grab coffee , now let's
go .> OOPS ! nearly forgot the "good " headphones .
The bass is played by Yukiko Shibutani
That could easily be car chase soundtrack in a movie. I’ll have this music ready to do domestic things aggressively now. Also Andrew you got me with, you are tearing me apart!! ....lisa. 🤣🤣🤣
I haven't watched a lot of Senri's stuff (because I'm just not that into Jazz/Fusion). I know she has mad skills!
Also, not particularly a huge fan of drum solos, but I found this one to captivating!
Drum Solo by Senri Kawaguchi - Drumeo ua-cam.com/video/V5YDxDuyKDI/v-deo.html
Take a look for your own entertainment.
Dynamics makes drums 3D.
she is just at another level with her GOD given talent....in my view she is the best drummer on the planet today
HIT LIKE A GRRRRRRRLLLL
The Japanese short i (either the hiragana い or katakana イ) is pronounced in the same way as a short ee as in beet. See here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Japanese
More simply stated "i" is always pronounced as a long "e" in most languages including Japanese.
Thanks for the great reaction! Senri is Awesome. You might find this interesting.
Yoyoka did a cover of Senri's song when she was 7yo...lol Onyx - 川口千里 (Senri Kawaguchi) 7歳女子ドラマー”よよか” / Seven year old drummer ”Yoyoka" ua-cam.com/video/MkhGgqXywU8/v-deo.html

How can a girl who is not even 5 feet tall be so powerful as a drummer??

By the way: coffee can be hot, little sips ☺
Where were you before I hit record!?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I am sorry ☺
🥁❤
what would Buddy say?
specs on that Rogers?
Doing the work computer drum machines are incapable of doing!
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
wonder if Akiro Jimbo gave her lessons? maybe he could take some from Senri...lol
Kanade is his fav
Maybe we also need more female guitar players. lol
Empathy! I find Female Bassists always have it :)
Orianthi would be my favorite female guitar player but in my opinion Senri is at a completely different level. ua-cam.com/video/nFMOULzi6oM/v-deo.html There are many excellent female violin players but only very good guitarists in my opinion.
@@vietnguyen4312 That was when she was 13. She's gotten even more incredible in the past 3 years.
Would love it if you could react to Senri Kawaguchi and Kanade Sato 2012, Live at Vinawalk (ua-cam.com/video/4sf3DgS3LEA/v-deo.html ). They were so young back then but played Some Skunk Funk by Brecker Brothers so well together. It was quite the battle between them. BTW, just discovered your channel and watched a bunch of videos. Look forward to more. Subscribed!
The music did nothing for me but the drumming was mind-blowing.
Great to hear Martin!
a Tamagu(t)chi....
Is it fair to say that the best new generation of drummers comes from Japan? There are all women and all less than 15yo😃
Accents are the difference between sounding like a beginner or a pro.
Definitely a required skill
FYI, it's pronounced "Sen-ree" in japanese.
female version of thomas pridgen
Wondering if you could play this or quantify how much better she is? You seem like a nice bloke. I could practice alot, but was not born a prodigy.
She's on Drumeo. I'm not!!!
I don't like to get into 'better'. But I'll say she's a really great drummer.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I like some others would love to see her and Anika play together like with Sarah, but I am not going to hold my breath. Perhaps their styles are to divergent. Still waiting for that Billy Cobham moment, for that i am not gonna hold my breath either. Take Care.
You say you like drums? How about some drums with your drums? Another Senri ua-cam.com/video/ifDJgNlg3sc/v-deo.html VS Sarah Thawer
Can hardly see the featured artist tucked way down in the corner.
Pronounce Sen(ri) as in river.
Incorrect actually. Senri is pronounced Sen-ree. The "i" always makes a long "e" sound in Japanese.
@@nst.pierre9800
Sorry, you're wrong! It's short 'ri', not 'ree' !!! Ask any Japanese!!
@@rockingrandma4711 The Japanese language doesn't even have the short "i" sound in it. They would be almost incapable of pronouncing it.
@@nst.pierre9800
I shouldn't have ask you to ask ANY Japanese. My pet peeve is all those mispronounced Japanese words/names such as Tokyo, sake, karaoke, kyoto, and Senrai and whole bunch.😜
Whenever someone says "girls can't play drums" you just need to send them to this video and watch their jaws drop
