- I found the Sony NEX-3N on eBay for $69... which is literally the cheapest Sony camera I could find online in June 2023. This camera actually had some surprising results for both photo and video shooters. I was pleasantly surprised at what 10+ year old camera tech can get you for under $100.

Great video. I picked up a used NEX3N several years ago for a good price. Still like using it even though I also have 2 A5100 and 2 A6000 all using the same lenses and same vintage lens adapters. The flip screen seals the deal.
Ive had mine since it came out. because of the lightness, I have Vikings disease, stage 4 in both hands and this camera has kept me shooting. It's capable of greatness if you learn how to use it. Love it 💛

Thanks for the video.. the rubber grip for us "Small" handed people make this the "Goat"!!! for street photography. I carry this with me in a hoody/jacket with no worries. Worked great a few times just walking in around in Tokyo. Randomly snapped some good compositions. Quick autofocus with Kit lens/ Signa 18-50mm or even with the TT-Artisan 27mm F2.8, i was able to snap some great images throughout the city without even thinking too much.
It’s kinda fun seeing a resurgence in NEX camera content. I got a NEX 6 more than 10 years ago, and I still use the thing daily. Absolute beast of a camera, although I’m keen to finally upgrade to something with Sonys crazy eye AF system
would an NEX be a good entry point for Sony E mount on the cheap? I use a Canon EF mount and want to test the waters for Sony E mount.
@@David_Quinn_Photography yes and no. You get a good feel for the form factor, but the modern bodies have converged towards an overall larger body. You'll be able to use most, if not all the common emount lenses (you may have issues with newer lenses due to lack of firmware updates).
The biggest issue with the NEX cameras is that the auto focusing system they had was pretty bad. It's not unusable or anything, but when they released, they weren't even up to the standard of the DSLRs at the time - it was their biggest flaw.
They will still take excellent photos, but you will miss plenty of shots as soon as things start to move if you rely on auto focus.
Low light performance will also not be up to scratch with the newer bodies - not bad, but you will get grainier images if you're comparing ISO directly

@sharpenednoodles doesnt the NEX-5T have almost the same specs (except the sensor of course) as the A6000? O remember their ISO range being about the same, and the NEX-5T having the same amount of focus points and also the eye AF that the A6000 has
@@hoshinonaohiko the a6000 is closer to the NEX6 than the 5T, but they should be pretty similar yeah. The a6000 is a side graded NEX6. Better sensor, but worse EVF and build quality than the NEX
Im an ex full time pro photographer and used to shoot on film and then digital. (Im 51). Thinking of using film makes me cringe to this day. I think the only people who feel nostalgic about film are those who didnt have to suffer through its limitations. Even the early digital slr cameras were hugely expensive and produced photos a million times worse than this nex 3n. My first digital slr was a nikon d100 that i referred to as an expensive paperweight 😅.
I love this camera. I use it with a 7artisan pancake 18mm f6.3 ii for a cheap zone focusing camera. Also with direct flash and processed with daylight white balance u get some serious pns film vibe
What about Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS?
Went on a bit of an online spending spree and picked up the 3N and the 5T around the same time. Both have the flip-over screen, but the 5T also tips down, and it slides so you can see the entire screen from the front (where the 3N screen is slightly cut off). Even though the 5T has more to hold on to, I prefer the ergonomics of the 3N, as it's more compact, and that power zoom lever is very convenient. It's also got built in flash, which the 5T doesn't. I got my 3N for about $90 with the 16-50 kit lens. Just one problem. It doesn't work for photos. Something in the shutter mechanism locks the camera up, and I have to power down and up to move on; the photo is generally overexposed. Video works fine.
Don I had that exact same problem with my NEX-7. Stuck shutter if some sort. I hear it’s a problem on a lot of the NEX cameras that have had a long shutter life. At least it works for video!

Bought one of mine at $85 with the kit powerzoom lens and the other for $150 with an IR conversion done to it. These cameras take amazing pictures.

Thank you so much for this review! So hard to find content about this camera. I wanted to purchase it to use with a ttartisan 25mm f/2, but I can't find nothing about the manual focusing experience with this camera. Can you magnify the preview to focus with chipless lenses?
How do u transfer all the pics & vids to laptop? Using the usb cable or card reader?

By far my favourite little camera, I don't use it that much but I don't want to sell it because it is perfect for its size, with the kit pancake lens you cant find anything better at this size and price.

And also the smallest one of the bunch if I remember correctly. That 16 mp sensor still produces pretty usable images. Sold mine last year only because I found a NEX6 for €100
I think it is the smallest in the bunch! Very solid images. But yeah $100 for the NEX 6 is a steal haha
@@kraigpruett is the 3N actually smaller than the C3? Could you do a side by side of both the C3 and 3N ? Supposedly the C3 is smaller and lighter than the 3N, which makes it difficult to choose, if size and weight are important to you.

Hi i have a sony nex-3n too and it was my first camera, however its screen is busted and i really wanna save it and im struggling to find a replacement for it and i dont really want a monitor. Is there any website that still offer replacement screens for btw i live in india so maybe thats why its hard to find😢

Hi Kraig, I would like to ask if the nex3n would be great for low light photography because you certainly mention that it is great for daylight photography but what about low light?
Not the greatest at low light. It is a super cheap entry level mirrorless camera for the mid 2010's, so that is to be expected.
What about to get some good spots videos in the beach like wakeboard, surf
I have the Sony nex-3n now and I love it ! My only problem is I don’t know how to import my videos to my phone using the sd card reader, when plugged in only my pictures import, no videos
I would try to import them to a computer! That is how I do mine! I haven't tried a direct import to a phone.
Always wonder if this will work with the newer Sony 11mm f1.8.

Did you update the firmware on the nex 5? You couldn't do it at launch but later versions allowed customizing buttons so you could have fast access to iso.
Not yet. I want to but need a PC do it. Im on Mac systems and all of the drivers are unsupported to run the install

Just looking there at the A5100, compared to the 3N.., at a guess the A5100 might be better handling than the 3N, due to the difference in the sizes of the grip.

A tip. I don't know what you said on your video because I had to quickly turn the sound down because your intro music is so loud.
If I then cant hear the presenter clearly I dont watch the video as there is a very strong chance they will add music again.
I can turn my TV on even late at night and set the volume and rarely have to alter it.
We don't all watch videos during the day when fluctuating sounds levels aren't as dramatic.
Its not just you its most you tubers who are not pro video makers and seems to be a really annoying trend!
Incidentally I use old Sony mirrorless cameras every day, they are really good cameras.

Every e-mount apsc lens would work with it, including third party lenses
Full frame lenses too would work. Every e mount Sony lens or third party lens would work with it. There are over 200 lenses available

There was an offer where sony would gove you a £300 discount on a new a7riv A if you brought any interchangle lens camera. I got this for £50 but decided to not get the new one as it was slightly out of my budget.

You need a lens, it is a standard mirrorless camera.
It’s an interchangeable lens camera. No lens no photo.
Without the lens you can take portrait of Austronaut in Space Station. Sharp and crisp.

I would look into something else if your church has dim lighting. This won't perform great in low light situations!

just picked one of these up but got scammed. I was told it was working but when I tried to take a photo, I got an error saying “Camera error, turn off and turn back on” or something like that, I looked it up and the Coiled spring that activates the shutter is lose and can’t shut the curtain quick enough. Need to take it in for repair.

@@8BitPasta just got it back from the local camera repair shop a few weeks ago! New shutter + labor for $150 and with the cost of the camera itself ($70) I’m not disappointed at all! It works great!!

How does it compare agaist a6000
Great question. Image quality for photos is very similar. a6000 takes better video, and has way better autofocus overall. But again... it is hard to find an a6000 for under $350... they range form $300-500. This camera is $69 lol. So if you primarily do photo work, this camera will produce similar results as the a6000

As someone who has both, the a6000 has much MUCH better AF, dynamic range and photo/color quality. The 3N is decent, battery life is much better and is my backup cam.
However, MF/focus peaking is a pain due the 3N's low resolution screen so I only use E mount lenses for that cam

How the hell are you getting these deals? The cheapest NEX-3N that isn't beat to hell is like $180. Even without lenses, they're like $150, then you gotta spend another $100 just to get a lens for it lol

I use the iPhone for almost everything because it’s always in my pocket. The camera is just too heavy and bulky
This camera was nowhere near $1K when it was released, goodness lol. They are used anywhere from $60-180 usually. That is dirt cheap. If you can't afford that, I can't help you. Check your facts fam.
