This was one of the best explanatory videos I have seen so far about this line of mixers. Bought my model 1.4 this week and off course before buying I watched tons of videos about it to choose carefully. I was not sure if I had to take a xone 96 or this little beauty and off course, motivated by the fact that this mixers lets you create e new style of mixing, I opted for this one! To the creator of this channel: congrats for the amazing review, thanks to it I better understood the overdrive part and the sculpt eq, now is time to test what I just learned!!! Respect ❤
Played one for the first time tonight and this review exactly describes the experience. It is very rotary like. When you pair it with effects is when it truly shines.
I'd be interested to know how the sound compares to the Mastersounds mixers (especially the phono preamps) as both are designed by Andy Rigby Jones. Haven't seen any Playdifferently/Mastersounds shootouts so far.
Thanks for taking the time to put up a great review. I think PlayDifferently could have included a bit more on how to use this mixer if you’re coming from a traditional dj background. A lot of the design has been created for people that have deep mixing/mastering skills from audio production. If you have this background the design is perfect and very intentional. If you arent aware of this I think a lot of djs pick it up and just dont get it, thinking its a 💩 mixer when really it wasnt made for them. I run a drum machine and ableton with mine and its been very hard to go back to traditional mixers as nothing sounds as good.
Loved most of your review except... You are wrong when you say this is for loner DJs.. This is for REAL DJs who have played and understand f Techno and House from the beginnings.. The whole idea of mixing was to compliment the recordings by making 2 tracks blend in a new way or creating something new.. Only later was it all about just taking a track and throwing on as many effects as possible. The true art form lies in mixing and blending in a beautiful and creative way to find sounds within sounds and frequencies within frequencies of already well produced tracks and find a progression in them that takes the listeners on a journey. TrueDJs like Ritchie Hawtin and others that have been doing it from near the beginning understand this and it´s the reason a mixer like this was created and exists. The reason I say this is to not belittle any more modern DJ techniques but lets keep it real... This Dj mixer is what all DJs should be aiming to master.. but most are lazy and can't quite grasp it. If you love sound and True Techno and House this (and other high quality rotary style) is the mixer you should aim to get.
I have one and love it. The only thing I would change is the curve on the faders. Far too steep. Have adapted when mixing digital, but I really miss a gentle curve when mixing vinyl. Has anyone found a way to swap them?
Your point at the end is what the long and short of it is for me. I like to socially mix and I occasionallty mix out at shows. I need my general mix workflow to be standardized enough to play on various levels of gear from various manufacturers. I'd love to play with one of these but at the price point I can't justify having one just sitting around to play with.
I wish all music tech reviews were as thoughtful and hands-on as this one. There is something very appealing about this mixer. I just wish it had an audio interface - I’ve got too used to not having to deal a big mess of wires! The Xone 96 seems as close to the best of both worlds that we can realistically hope for.
Thanks for the review! Two ?’s, one not directly related to the review. 1. After using this mixer, is it a mixer you would consider adopting ( if you haven’t already)? 2. Is that SC6000 yours or a loaner? If yours, why the switch? Thanks again for the reviews and working to keep it alive in DYT. 🙌
1.) The problem I have is the same one a lot of DJs will have... nobody else knows how to use it. While I'd love to have it around for personal use, it's not conducive to "social mixing" or for throwing shows, etc. Which makes it an expensive proposition... especially considering that I'd still have to buy another mixer to scratch on. 2.) The SC6000 is on loan from The DJ Hookup. My daily drivers are a set of Pioneer XDJ-1000s. But the 6000 is much nicer, and the dual layer option was convenient for this video. Thanks for watching!
Hey David - I’ve just watched your video and this kit is right up my street. In your demo you could certainly hear the hawtin sound there. Amazing bit of kit and extremely well explained
Thanks for this detailed walkthrough. I think you’re spot on about who this mixer is for and who it isn’t. I’m glad I got one but it isn’t for everyone. It’s more of a want than a “need,” that’s for sure ;)
@@PassionateDJ can you do a video on mixing techniques with the Model 1? I've been playing around with it but haven't found many videos about different strategies.

Can you please comment on, when you engage the Master Eq does it add another 2-3db of level, the position of all 3 knobs is at 12 noon, so no Eq is applied, that is what mine does and I just got it last week. I can not get an answer from anyone from Playdifferently crew. Thank You
Great review. If the faders were linear or adjustable I would buy a 1.4 now based on your critique. So.......looking for a way forwards....I was wondering if the "action is all at the top" issue is related to using the mixer at home or in a studio? If the mixer was plugged into a massive festival stage - then maybe I wouldn't get the sliders that near to the top of their travel (ie there might be precision in not taking sliders most of the way up and instead making use of the lower range - maybe up to two thirds or three quarters up?). I need to try one - obviously :-) Thanks again
After also watching your recent passionate Xone96 review I actually purchased the Model1.4, as I felt the Xone96 was unnecessarily too big & complicated for me. In comparison the Model1.4 seems so neat and elegant. The faders take getting used to, but as you mentioned you preferred a non-linear curve (when you had the option on the 96). This is a massive change from a Pioneer 900, but worth it I think. Thanks again!
The fader curve made me sell this Unit. I miss it and love it but that fader curve is really something to get used too. Sold mine and bought the xone 96 instead.
Thanks for the review I purchased my model 1.4 mixer about a month ago and emailed The Dj Hook up about a compatible sound interface with the mixer, they never responded back so I decided to email Sweetwater instead and they took really good care of me.

When you demo the filters it kind of seems like the high pass takes out all the lows but the low pass doesn't ever seem to take out all the highs; is that accurate?
Yeah, I don’t think the LP takes out the highs as much as other Xone mixers such as the PX5 on the Master Filter. I have a Model 1 and first I thought I would see if I could find someone to modify it to increase the frequency range on the Master LP filter. But after using it for a few weeks I think it’s sufficient for the way I like to play. I do love the “full cut” of a good low pass though. I don’t think the channel filters cut as much as the masters. Still…. filter all day with this thing… 🔥🔥
Tnx for this any tips how to connect an iPad tracktor into the model 1 I’m a musician not a technician, these techy tings take up a lot of time figuring out Tnx 🤔
This mixer doesn’t have a sound card. There’s no way to connect an iPad digitally. I suppose the best way would be to get a USB audio interface of some kind for the iPad, then run audio cables from there to your mixer inputs. I might recommend using a laptop and proper Traktor software for this, if you are going through all the trouble.
