My biggest problem was hiring someone to play a main singing character and her voice is just okay. It’s a musical. You can have a movie musical that’s toned down a bit compared to broadway but there was so little feeling in “Stupid With Love” it just made me sad.

I'm almost 18 and I fully agree that this is gen z's mean girls. I honestly felt like tiktok was brought into it effectively. The story would never happen at my school, but I kind of felt like if it did, this was definitely similar to how I think it would look and feel like

There were some changes I wasn’t a fan of and there were some I thought were even better! It definitely was a good mix. I love “Stupid with love” a lot more from the stage production because of the beat and energy behind it, whereas in the movie it’s a bit slowed down and toned down in energy. BUT! “Sexy” is one of my fav songs in the stage production but I think Avantika KILLED it and now I play her version more! Apex Predator still wins for stage production but Janice’s “how do you outsmart” at the end was sooo good in the movie. I love both 🩷🩷🩷🩷

The original movie had all the mean girls be mean to each other. In this one it was only Regina being mean. I wish they had a scene like the telephone scene from the movie but adapt it to this time.

I am a huge fan of the Broadway show and when I first heard the soundtrack on YT I hated the changing of the music. When I went to the movies and watched it I hated it. But now that I've seen it multiple more times on stremaing, I've grown to love it

  • @solcarlosofficial

I love Renee but I think her Regina was a bit one noted. What rachel mcadams does she is so sweet to cady at first and then so manipulative in a confusing way cause she seems so sweet.
Renee always came off as a bully. Which makes me think why do so many people praise her then?
I wish we had seen more layers.
But her singing is out of this world!!! I love her

As someone who is a HUGE fan of the Broadway Musical I actually do love this movie! Yes I do hate how they changed and cut some songs, but I still really enjoyed it. With movie adaptations of musicals they can’t always be 100% accurate to the og musical, and for what it’s worth they did an amazing job with this movie. I didn’t understand the hate for this movie, it’s so good

  • @if3359

Strongly agree. Could it be better if they put some more effort into certain parts? IMO yes. Should they have cast a Cady and an Aaron that meet the singing requirements of these roles? IMO, yes. But overall I thought it was a really fun movie with some great performances, and also that Someone Gets Hurt scene! Damn!

The ONLY complaint I had about the movie was that the songs felt overproduced, but that's an artistic choice that probably happened in post. It felt like a "how do we reach these kids?" decision. Otherwise, I loved everything in the movie!

I too hadn't really been in the Mean Girls musical fandom before the movie came out. I had heard a little bit of the music but otherwise was not really familiar with it at all. I went by myself because it was the summer holidays here and I had a blast. It was probably a lot-a-bit influenced by Renee Rapp being the icon and mother that she is, but world burn changed me in ways I can't describe (as a lesbian, this movie made me at least 10% gayer). It's safe to say that this has quickly grown into an obsession with the musical which I'm not mad about.

I think part of the problem was Cady and part of the issue was music that was cut in favor of dialogue. The musical is just so good it didn’t need changed a ton to bring it up to current day. I thought the movie was good, it just didn’t meet my expectations after the musical.

  • @sophielem59

    THANK YOU FOR THAT.
I enjoyed the movie, it was fun, the acting was good and I like how they rearranged some melodies in the songs. I didn't like all of the choices but some were good!
Reneé is my queen, she was so good, but we all knew this.
Avantika just shocked me. I knew her from the DCOM Spin which was about DJ. She sang a little in that movie, but I wasn't excepting such a great voice.
Same thing for Bebe Wood, I didn't knew she could sing and she was so good! So after the movie I listened to her EP, which is great!
Auli'i was so good, her voice, her acting... And her chemistry with Jaquel was great! They were iconic together! I loved that they sang Apex Predator together! Yes Cady's part makes sense in the musical, but I feel like with the pacing of the movie it made more sense to make Damian sing with Janice. Especially considering that they cut his songs for whatever reasons they had!
Angourie's voice was... nice? I mean it wasn't groundbreaking, I wasn't shocked by her voice. It was not bad, she can sing, and it wasn't unpleasant to hear. Her acting was great, and she did a good job as Cady.
About Chris Biney, I don't really understand the casting... He didn't have that much presence and the fact that he didn't sing in a movie musical makes me think that he was casted to attract people. Which is not a bad thing per se, but it was just... weird.

I love the original, and I like this version of, frankly, the same exact movie. Personally, I love the songs, especially Regina George's who took center stage in every scene she was in. There were some removal of things that would be a little questionable today, and there were new jokes that were honestly funny. Janis felt like herself, and they made it so it makes more sense that her and Damian are friends. It was what a remake is supposed to be. It is not supposed to replace the original but to add to it, with a new presentation that still fits the narrative. If you like the original better, then you will always have it, but I personally really liked the new Damian and Janis, and honestly, Karen was a surprise in a good way.

Ok so I love the original movie and the musical is one of my favs. I’ve seen both in person so I have a lot of knowledge on mean girls. So when they first announced the production of this movie I was really excited. However when the trailer was released I was really concerned. And again with peoples reviews of it I was really scared I was not going to like the movie musical. But I watched it for the first time the other night and I LOVE it!!!! It was the PERFECT mix of movie and musical. It reminded me a lot of the musical but also a good movie production. I feel it also captured how high school is nowadays amazingly and was more accurate to true mean girls. (Also the fact Mrs.Norbury and Mr.Duvall are married make it a 10000 times better, I always shipped them;)

I pretty much agree with you. It feels like they were trying to make it an updated hybrid of the original movie and stage show so anyone who has a strong attachment to either was going to feel disappointed. For me, if Cady had been more on par vocally with Janis, Damien and Regina that also might have helped. Angourie Rice wasn’t bad but alongside Renee Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey, she felt a little underwhelming.

I was expecting to hate it from all the bad reviews but I loved it. I thought it was really funny and surprisingly it's able to stand on it's own with being an adaption of such a classic. I watched it on release day, and I loved it. I'd seen the bootleg with Reneé of it, and I honestly loved the movie so much too. The difference was not that grand, they just made it more fit toward a bigger audience. There were songs in the movie that I liked better in the film than on stage. I will defend it with my life, honestly. Reneé was incredible. Auli'i and Jaquel captivated me. Bebe's rendition of "What's wrong with me?" I played on repeat for hours afterwards. The only thing that I actually missed was the bit of Karen and Gretchen in "The Plastics" where all of them sang simultaneously. Otherwise it was genuinely good in my eyes, and hence the bashing has felt incredibly funny to me .

Renee and Auli'i(voice of Disney's Moana) both carried. Renee did perfect her songs but Auli'i proved why she's a Disney princess in her songs.
Also this movie was originally made for Paramount+ but the test audiences they showed it too really like it so they put this cheap made for TV movie in theaters. They didn't have the OG movie budget so they stayed at the school Paramount likely has on their studio lot and some small sets that worked for each scene. The musical fit in a stage so it didn't need huge sets.

I totally agree with you! Of course there were some thing that I wish had been done differently-that's true for any movie, especially those with source material(s) that are so well-known, culturally monumental, and beloved by their audiences-but overall it was a really fun movie and I'm glad I saw it! There were a lot of genuinely good and funny parts of the movie, it did what it came to do which was have a good time, lean into the camp, and make an entire generation of young queers fall in love with Renee Rapp, and I personally think they hit all those markers. After having seen it myself I'm surprised at the severity with which people online were dragging the movie, I *really* don't think it warranted the level of loathing that I saw. Is this one going to be as timeless and pop culturally significant as the original Mean Girls? No, almost certainly not. But did I enjoy myself while watching it? Yes, definitely, and that's what was important to me :)

Perhaps it's because I am GenZ but I couldn't stop laughing at all the references to modern pop culture and social media etc.
The TikTok stuff was a bit "uncanny valley", sure, but if you were to have a show about the social dynamics of a high school set in the 2020s and it had no social media at all it would be completely unrealistic, and for me, immersion-breaking.
That one shot of Cady during 'Revenge Party' was not one I would have signed off if I were a Director, but again people have allowed that to overshadow some of the genuinely amazing shots and cinematography like in 'What Ifs' or 'Rather Be Me'.

I agree! The movie wasn't perfect but it was a genuinely good time for me. I don't mind a critique but I do think there is a responsibility to ask: am I adding some new/necessary to the conversation?

I'm a millennial & a musical theater person who loves the musical. Both groups were way too judgy of this version, both before & after it released. There were things I would've preferred differently, sure. But I like the new movie!

me and my best friend saw this movie on opening night. we both had a GREAT time as mean girl die hard fans (of both the musical and original) ((the second can burn in hell)). i was genuinely shocked with everyone saying it was horrible because it really wasn’t. i mean everyone’s opinions are valid but they were making it out to be the worst movie ever made and thats not the case what’s so ever. also i must say as a raging lesbian i was going INSANE during the entire movie. my most negative thing to say about this movie is DEFINITELY who they casted as cady. no offense to the actress at all but i feel like the casting team should’ve chose someone who had musical experience for the LEAD ROLL. thats just my opinion though.

I haven't seen it but I've heard the soundtrack and that alone makes me mad like they completely changed how the songs are sung/ sounding for more of a movie with songs sprinkled in it type of movie, this is why musicals filmed on stage for their movie is way better than a musical being turned into a movie for movie goers not musical theatre people and that's why things like Dear Evan Hansen, Mean Girls and rent for example don't work as a movie (Mama Mia and The Phantom Of The Opera are exceptions to that rule). Maybe people who actually like musicals should make movies based on musicals not people who like movies who just wanna cash on a genre that's getting some attention.

I don’t think there’s a single actress on this planet that could’ve been worse in this movie than Angourie Rice. They could’ve had Tina Fey play Cady and I bet it would’ve been better. I don’t know what celebrity she’s related to, but it literally angers me that she of all people is successful right now.

    • @JackieWarner13

Someone didn't listen to Sam's talk.
Angourie doesn't have famous family. Her parents like run a random small theatre company in Melbourne who have like 1-2 credits of Aussie tv to their name from like year 2000 & they/the shows aren't even known to Australians. She's an amazing actress go watch other things she's been in like The Nice Guys, Mare Of Easttown to name a few.

@@JackieWarner13 My point still stands, I think she’s a horrible actress. And her parents owning a theater company still makes her a nepo baby.

I saw a clip of when Sabrina Carpenter played Cady on Broadway (I think she only got to do it a few days because it was literally _right_ before the covid shutdown). I honestly think she would’ve made a great Cady. She has background as an actress and singer. Plus, with her being so much more popular now due to being on the Eras tour, I think more people would’ve been drawn to see the movie. The clip I saw was her doing Stupid With Love and she sounds amazing!

@@jamiegdubois She would’ve been great, but I always thought she was too conventionally pretty to play Cady. Still would’ve been better than Angourie, but the bar is literally in Hell if that’s the standard.

Big agree!! It was so fun and I liked most of the changes! If they made it exactly the same as the musical it would be boring and it wouldn’t bring anything new. Maybe a hot take but I liked the actress that played Cady, her voice reminds me of Regina Spektor or Ingrid Michaelsons early 2000s soft pop. Her voice fit the character better in my opinion. But everyone is entitled to their opinion!

Ngl, I find the movie pretty unwatchable. But one thing I do want to say really quick is that I think people need to stop it with the whole "they made a movie based on a musical based on a movie?!? How weird and/or lazy and/or such a cash-grab!" rigmarole. Because, 1) art and entertainment can take many different forms, and there is very much an art to adaptation (which I will say I think Mean Girls does not excel at), and 2), and more importantly, it's not a new thing. Do you like Little Shop of Horrors? Do you like Hairspray? They did the same thing!

I loved the 2004 movie and liked the musical, and I really really love the musical movie 2024! It's a fun and energetic movie. I think I've watched it like 6 or 7 times already ahahha. I simply love it. Auli'i is fenomenal as Janis and she totally crushed it on every songs, expecially Rather Be Me. Reneé is Reneé Rapp, she always gets the job done in every form of Mean Girls. All the cast was amazing and funny for me. Also, I totally loved Janis and Damian frienship here more then in the OG one. One of my new comfort movies.
Like, not every movie has to be a drama or Oscar worthy, we can have musical comedies too. This is such a good time to watch.
