That first story is wild. Production NEEDED to stop the show. That whole situation could have been way more unsafe.
the first story is actually insane, but FULLY believable. i loved the analogy of the high school, because it really demonstrates the idea that actors are products and not people. absolutely WILD.
As a professional stage manager, the first is story is INSANE!! I cannot believe the SMs didn't stop it the minute that person got onstage.
It is not a revolutionary experience…in fashion you have protesters and crazy people jump on the stage or the girl before you takes a tumble,,the models walk right past them and keep going…imagine the model saying STOP THE SHOW!there is a protester or homeless person here!…I understand some among us think everything is a “I need to speak to your manager” moment,I live in Hell’s Kitchen,homeless people pull up beside you and shoot up right there,get up and leave or pass out right there…,and guess what?you survive!
A week ago there were protesters during act 2 of ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE where production only stopped the show after the 3rd protester spoke (read the Adam Feldman article about it online.) I was surprised the SM/production didn't stop the show earlier.
The first story make me so sick. I hate how much the "show must go on" sense of mind is always implied. Like if there is active danger or an actor is hurt, it doesn't make sense that the managers would rather risk the show than the actors on stage.
I think it’s shocking that in the first story, none of the actors felt safe to say “stop” and stop the show when there was an ACTIVELY BLEEDING STRANGER on stage. I love performing and acting with my whole heart, but in professional performances safety should always be the top priority, and not about “The show must go on!”.

I was living in Germany and saw Antonio Gades' travelling performance of his Carmen ballet. He stopped the show, literally everyone onstage froze, and he ordered security to remove an audience member who had taken flash pictures. He explained -- in Spanish to a German audience -- that the dancers worked close to the edge of the stage and that during the turns they couldn't risk being blinded by the flash. The show then restarted. The dancers had remained frozen the entire time.
It was a brilliant evening.

Im an actor. 2 years ago I was in a theatre festival that took place in the woods at night (site specific for halloween) one of my final characters was a girl possessed by a demon and eventually I kill my costar. The audience is circling us. A drunk man got in my face and kept questioning me and almost fought me because he thought it was real and that I was going to actually kill her. The director and stage manager were in the audience. They never stopped it. "The show must go on"
That’s so utterly disgusting… the show is not more important than performers lives! If there’s a threat the show must stop and it may resume when the situation is properly handle 🤦🏼♀️

The perception of wealth is so interesting. I have a friend who is a professional voice actor who worries month-to-month because sometimes she’ll get a huge contract and she won’t have to worry for a little bit but with a family and a mortgage she really does. Even with her income if she doesn’t work for for a month, which can happen, it can really take a toll.
When I lived in LA, there was an actor who was on a major television show for years and years and still was working , and she was a hostess at a restaurant. She still needed to work other jobs in order to afford to live in Los Angeles and pursue her dreams.
i once went to an audition for a dance job and they straight up told me i was too ugly to be in the piece i was quite upset as i was 13 YEARS OLD 😭😭

7:01 My freshman year of high school (spring 2019) there was a kid who came into the school wearing a black bullet-proof vest. Nobody knew if he was armed or not and the entire school went into lockdown. That was scary for me and everybody else. Luckily that was all that happened, but still. If a homeless person, full on BLEEDING, came into our school we would’ve for sure went into a lockdown. And this production should’ve stopped as well. I hope everyone including that person was safe after this! I believe they were but I wanna make sure 🙏🏼💙

I am so sorry you experienced SA. You shouldn't have done ANYTHING; THEY NEVER SHOULD HAVE DONE ANYTHING TO YOU! I am so sorry for the trauma you experienced. Thank you for sharing this as a warning to others.
OMG! @ryan I was literally at the show you’re talking about when the homeless person went on stage! It was wildest thing I’ve ever seen!
It happened 10 min before the end of act 1, and when I went outside during the intermission I saw him in a police car.
I’ll keep the identity of the show secret to respect your wishes.
I was at the show with the homeless man. (To respect your wishes I won’t say which show)
To be fair to stage management, it wasn’t clear to me that the man was bleeding and I was way closer to him than they were. (He entered at the stage left door and walked right past me on the aisle)
Also, he DID go on stage but he never stopped moving. So although it was for sure frightening to the cast, he never did anything that wad inherently threatening (other then walking on stage) but the actual amount of time he was on stage was less then 5 seconds. And most of the audience didn’t even realize that something strange had happened. I talked to several people afterwards who were clueless about it.

ok hi so i just wanted to say thank you for this. As an 18 year old dancer whos currently about to start her professional career, hearing all of this is exactly what i needed. The comfort and motivation i feel from hearing you talk about the realness of rejection and that it truly is never personal and you just have to learn to live with never knowing why you didnt book is exactly what i needed to hear right now as im currently in a big audition season so thank you. Funny you mention you were in a show that had a fire that stopped the show because I happen to know of a show (won’t say what or when) that a fire occurred under the stage, during performance, and the crew put it out and continued without telling cast or audience 😅😅😅😅😅😅. I wouldn’t believe the story except it came from a first hand source so…those protocols really do get broken sometimes
Australia has locked and manned stage doors. in Australia Half the time major shows casts get buzzed in by the stage door person. The lanyards are their security clearances they don’t opens doors with them. Was at a show recently where one of the principals were sick just before they made their entrance and the stopped the show not even 5mins into the show. But also Kiana Danielle tells a multiple stories of people who got onstage during Six the musical (pre covid tour) and the show never stopped which is crazy to me.
I cannot stress enough on how useful your videos have been for me, I do really love the entertainment industry and I want to go into it so bad. You've help me so much and you don't even know it. I am a younger person and i have been pretty severely sexually assaulted before and you sharing your story help a lot because I must say, I haven't told anyone, I'm terrified of doing so but your advise is unworldy. Talking about dream roles, it took me FIVE auditions in over ten years time to finally book my dream role. Yes, five. Out of those five, three times it was the same actor who got the role over me. It would always come down to him and me. When it was FINALLY my turn, it was like a dream come true. I loved every minute of it. So, NEVER give up! If you want it badly enough, it will happen.
Unfortunately, I decided to move away from acting after that experience. That was over eleven years ago and to this day I regret that decision. I go to see LIVE theater and performances a lot and wish I was back on the stage. I just get scared to audition again because it’s been so long. I feel like I’m out of the loop now. I hope to get the courage again soon because it was once my pride and joy.

I was playing in the pit for a ballet once and the fire alarm went off. We did not stop 🙃 there was no fire, but still???
Story 1 is not surprising to me in the slightest. When it’s drilled into you that you are easily replaceable and so many people would kill to have your spot, you don’t speak out in fear of losing that spot. It’s sad but true.
Thanks for talking about this. I'm currently considering a career change and focusing on theatre. It's nice to get a realistic expectation on salary.

Thank you Ryan for your honesty. We are the same age but unfortunately I didn't have the means to start when I was young so I have to catch up. Ive been acting professionally for over 10 years. You have 23 years of wisdom and I deeply appreciate how honest you are with the industry. I don't feel crazy anymore since now I know that the unfairness and hardship happens to all of us (my agent fired me 2 months ago because I got into a car accident and I requested 2 weeks off in the dead season) it sent me into a spiral. It doesn't feel like the industry is against me, I have figured out I have to fight the industry and perceiver through it since I feel the same way about entertaining; it is magical. So thank you Ryan for speaking your truth

As a guy who struggles with self confidence himself, I see you Ryan. If we did ever meet, I’d make it a point to get to know you regardless of your status. I’m sure I’d geek out a little but I believe a genuine interaction would mean more to me than a fan encounter.
Also I understand a SA situation. I’m in therapy myself now and trying to work past it so I can have a real relationship with someone. I’ve been carrying it around for 10 years and am now trying to work on myself. It took awhile, but life changes us at different times. Thank you for sharing. I’m sorry that happened to you
I would love to be a part of the entertainment industry, but I am definitely not strong enough for all the rejection and not knowing where the next job is coming from or how to deal with all the politics of it all.

Holy crap! You are the guy (so much more) that sang “I Can’t Stand Still” for Patti Lupone during that master class and she made you raise the key like 90 times!!
I saw a special on PBS of a former Broadway actor, who was in Jersey Boys, and there was a fire I believe, or some emergency situation during the show, and the show had to stop. The actor was in his police uniform costume, and the audience members thought that he’s a police officer to take care of the emergency. If I saw that situation with that intoxicated transient (meaning homeless person) at the show I was watching, I’d be distracted, in fact, disturbed by the way the situation was handled.
Story one has to be Wicked. A show that absolutely goes ape if anyone dares to riff and tears them a new one if they do i can absolutely believe would do this. Whatever it was I wish I had been there as an audience member because then it would have been my own story to tell and trust me i would not ever shut up about how disgustingly vile that was

I just want to say
These videos are so informative for me. I'm planning to go into the entertainment industry, but while these videos are warnings to incoming actors, they're lessons and reminders for me as an incoming director. I want to direct, and more than anything, I just want the people around me to have their incredible talent nurtured to be the best it can be, to create a cohesive production that brings a great experience to the people that watch it. Sometimes I feel like I'm one of the only ones who wants that. I know there are incredible directors out there, obviously there are, but so far, of the 6 I've worked with, I feel like I've only worked with one who was really great, because he legitimately cared about the show, the production, the audience, and helping the people in it be the best they could be. He inspired me so much. And then I go to my college interview for a directing program and am told I'm one of the few who doesn't say I'm getting into it just because I want to be in charge. And I'm so proud of that, because that's never been why I want to do it. I want to make something that is great and beneficial for the people in it, and entertaining for the people who watch it. And as I hear more and more stories, stories like these ones, it only makes me want to do even more. I want to be honest with people, even when the lie is easier. I want to make them feel like they're in a place where they feel comfortable making themselves as comfortable as they need to be. I want them to give them all the support I'm able to. I want to make the entertainment industry just a little bit better for those whose paths I cross. Work and rehearsal should never be places where someone feels uncomfortable or unsafe, and hearing stories like this only makes me more certain that I want to be a director, if only so I can bring just a little less difficulty and ridiculousness into the industry, and make people just a little happier. We do this because it brings us so much joy, so why do we drive people away so often?
I was in this industry for a few years and had a lot of big (Broadway) opportunities being set up for me, but I just couldn't handle the culture for all of these reasons. If you can do it, God bless you. I just can't deal with it. It was not worth it for me, especially knowing my tolerance for this was encouraging the industry and making these horrible people money. The art of theatre is, to me, the most beautiful form of art. I will love it for the rest of my life. I cannot in good faith participate in the industry. Ryan is amazing for putting this information out there for younger people to make that decision for themselves and being honest about what this is.
Not sure if you have plans to, but you should go see Sweeney Todd and make a video about your thoughts on Joe Locke’s broadway debut. I think you would give good insight as a fellow theatre kid who did a teen tv show as well as broadway

That first story is absolutely absurd and I hate that I can fully believe every second of it. I've worked both on and off the stage (mainly in directing and costuming) and I cannot stand such a prevailent "the show must go on" mentality. Why put people in danger just for the shows sake? Theatre is supposed to be our place, our escape where we are free to make art, not forced to perform. Its a privillage we get to do this for a living, why risk it?
Because once you get to a certain level of theatre, all producers care about is money unfortunately.
@@emmahughes2718 yeah :( dealt with one in particular who unfortunately cared only about the bottom line to the point that it went full circle and killed the production completely. Some of the best shows I've worked on are college level shows with only a few thousand to split between every department cause everyone there is so into their craft, it's truly a magical type of theater
If you have seniority like ol boy over here that says he has been in the industry for 20 years you can pull all kinds of diva and Karen tantrums,and stop the show to text your homegirl…,some others cannot and it is what it is …if you are the new girl and you do all that they WILL blacklist you…it just sounds so tone deaf to me

That first story is insane. 100% the show should have been stopped. I get why some are scared to speak up, but someone needed to have the strength to stop it for everyone. That was clearly not safe for anyone. I love these videos Ryan. I love just hearing everything that's happened that might not be public knowledge. I'm trying to be an actor. Wasn't until last year that I really picked it up again and have been trying. I took a hiatus because 2020 happened. Personally, I love the whole process and the performance. Hate casting for the reasons you pointed out. But I keep trying because I love it when it happens. But as an Asian American woman, I have the toughest time being seen. Agents won't look at me. I have talent. Am I the best? No. But I'm good or else I wouldn't keep going. That's not me trying toot my own horn. But I just go unseen and it really bothered me. Why no one would take a chance on me. And then a few years ago, I realized, it has nothing to do with me per say. There are a million reasons why I'm not being cast in something. Not necessarily my talent. I actually had someone at Gersh interested in me and then nothing came of it. So just not being seen can be rough. But I could listen to all your stories. I love hearing you talk about your experiences. You're the person I wish I knew years ago at the start of my career so then I could really know and be prepared.
My question is, where was the house manager? Where were the ushers?
@@hannahrosereviews5073 exactly. I used to be in the box office and and usher. The house manager would have 💯 called the cops and stopped everything. Seems like everyone was top scared to speak up and stop the show

Everyone saying the first story wild is missing the meat of this video. Dude is laying down truth bombs. Status and wealth, talking about your personal sa, toxic casting and work environment. Young people wanting to join professional productions need to hear this from a person that is brave enough to say it.
The Idea of the show must go on is only acceptable whenever it’s just a line mess-up or something like that. You don’t risk safety. My Mom was in a Production and her foot got caught on the set and she hurt herself very bad, but still did the next 2 weekends of the show. She got blood clots and had to have surgery because of that.
No one on the stage " interfaced" with him because all he did was run past them. If he remained on the stage there would definitely been a stop.

I'm brazilian, and the Musical Theater industry here is just as unfair for actors, I tried to be a part of it for two years and the nasty part was just too nasty for me, I had to remove myself and work in something else. I really admire anyone who can deal with it, I just couldn't.

What is truly crazy about the first story imo is how the man was allowed to get inside the auditorium to begin with. He should have been apprehended by security before he even reached the doors, and then neither the actors nor the audience would have even been aware of his presence and there would be no need to stop the show and no potential risk to anyone. More than anything it is a failure on the part of the security of the theatre.
As a mental health professional I’d be more surprised if someone had the presence of mind to say stop. In extreme cases like this most people have a freeze response and keep doing what they were already doing, until a situation becomes too dangerous to go on.
Additionally, as a Crisis team member I am called out to many work places where people, including homeless, are in states just like this and the business keeps operating as normal. So no this is not a show must go on case, it’s an ignore the burning building until you can’t. And that is how the human brain often deals with trauma.

Yeah story one isn’t a surprise. Saw a production of Peter Brooks…I think Hamlet? Someone in audience had heart attack. Was carried out by ushers and seatmates. No stopping of show. No “bring up house lights”. No “is there a doctor in the house”. Show. Must. Go. On.
The capper? Found out afterwards the audience member was a huge donor to the theater…and if memory serves on the board even (hmmm…maybe the theater was in the will….)
probably the reason he lost the job to the lesser known actor is because they didn’t need to pay them as much as they would’ve needed to pay Ryan with his level of experience and credits. As far as ticket sales go it’s not going to make much difference, box office wise. But where producers are concerned they just wanted the guy who would do it for the least amount of money. Sad theatre politics.

Also the thing that happened at Chicago in 2018. I feel like that's one of the best examples of the toxicity in the industry.

While I agree the first story is horrendous, you would be surprised about what a school would actually do in that situation sadly….
I was once sexually harassed once by my cast mate. So this takes place when I was about 11. I was preforming as Fiona in Shrek The Musical and there was this guy let’s call Farquaad because that’s who he played. He was 9 so naturally I was like “oh he’s just a little kid” and that was the vibe he gave me during the beginning of rehearsals. Unfortunately beginnings don’t last for long. It all started when I was with my friends at break. We were doodling silly art of Fiona. We purposely made our drawings replicate me as Fiona. Then Farquaad comes up to us and requests us to “draw her naked”. Which for a 9 year old is a weird fantasy. I felt uncomfortable because they were technically drawing me so he was asking us to show a picture of me naked. I did eventually get over it after awhile but it got worse from there. During the scene where donkey falls in love with the dragon I was watching from the wing with Farquaad when all of a sudden he pins me to the wall and starts shushing me. I told him to stop multiple times but he didn’t let go. I did end up shoving him away because I was over the average height for an 11 year old and was quite strong too. But this kept happening and one time he tried to kiss me. He would also make dirty jokes involving me doing “weird stuff”. I didn’t feel safe in that theatre and would hide away so he couldn’t do anything. At the time I should have told someone but I didn’t and that’s a terrible lesson. It stopped near the final performance but that’s because my other castmates defended me.
Was the a union or nonunion production? Equity would never let this happen.

Guessing the casting story was Almost Famous.
From what you said the person jumped on the stage then immediately ran off the stage to the back. So he must have only been on the stage for no more than 5 or 6 seconds. So then why call stop? Now if he had remained on the stage and began interacting with the performers by all means then stop the show. Since he jumped on the stage then ran back off it immediately there was no physical interference with the show. Never forget " The show must go on "
Just because he was no longer on the stage doesn't mean that he was no longer a threat. Any cast and crew backstage would have been at risk, and the person could also have come back out on stage or into the audience.

About sexual harassment, I was an actress at a local theatre, we were doing the rocky horror picture show with tons of callbacks that made the show SO MUCH dirtier, anyway during the pre-show there was a part were the director was standing on stage with me and three other actresses and he said “now everyone’s gonna put their right hand at their heart and their left hand on the shoulder OR ass, with consent, of the person next to them.” Then we said a prayer where we changed the lines into something related to rocky horror, I should have said something in the first place, you can’t just trust in everyone in the audience respecting the person next to them. When we rehearsed the pre-show I told the director that I’d prefer him putting his hand on my shoulder, at the actual show he put his hand on my ass. He did that every Show Night and I never said something. I told myself it’s a very sexual Show it just fits into the vibes of the show also I wasn’t brave enough to tell him on stage, in front of the whole audience and theatre crew, that I’d actually prefer him putting his hand on my shoulder. During the last show night I was having a bad day, I had one constant panic attack during the whole day, before the show I was feeling better, I didn’t really had an issue with stage fright either (considering that this was my first production that means a lot). But the moment he put his hand on my ass that strength was gone and for the rest of the show I was terrible with my lines and my cues, it was actually like I was under a bell jar for the rest of the show and I couldn’t get out of it.

I had a simlar to sitation to the first story in my high school. We were in middle of a run of our play and a special needs student from the aduince ran up on stage and ran staright into our cyce then procided to run around the stage pushuing and slapiing cast mebers and scerming. I got pushed almsot to the floor and we never stopped. I understand these things happend and it wasent the girls fault. But I fell seince we were all getting physiaclly hurt stage mamngment should have called stpo exspilly at high school lelvel.

Interesting that the housing status of the person was such a sticking point for you. The drug influence and bleeding are much more concerning, why make them out to be more dangerous than a drug influenced bleeding person who has a home?
Ryan’s focus in the story was actually the production staff placing pressure on its cast not to call stop in an unsafe situation. The presumed housing status was a detail mentioned in the context that this person was an unknown level of risk and therefore potentially dangerous. I’ve been homeless and didn’t perceive negative judgment of that status by Ryan - as the homelessness was not the point of the story.
You are angry at the wrong people. It is NOT production. You can say "stop." It's about free speech. In all free speech, you have to be prepared to pay a price, however. It is security that fell down on the job here. In the theater in our major city, at the door (and throughout the building) are security officers that never would have allowed a "bleeding" disheveled individual to even enter into the building.
Since he jumped on the stage and then immediately ran back off the stage no one on stage performing was in any danger.
