How interesting! I've never seen this vegetable before. Is it similar in taste to bitter melon?
Irene Grijalvo Tarrés It is bitter melon. They call it different names. In my country, Trinidad, we call it carailli.

Said it incorrect.
You add mango for sour does karela like sweetness?

Where do you find mango powder?
Thanks Chetna. I'm in West Yorkshire so there's plenty of specialist sub-continent food shops and I've often seen these karela on sale but never known what to do with them. Now I do!

Is there some ingredient which can be added a bit more to remove the whole of the bitterness from it
maybe lemon

Hey Chetna! I have a question. I want to make one of the dishes in the book when the recipe calls for dried Fenugreek leaves. I can't find them unfortunately, but I can find seeds. Can I substitute the leaves for the seeds or should I just leave it out?
Hi. Dried fenugreek leaves are called Kasurimethi. They are available online and in Indian stores.
I know. I live in Israel and we have a problem getting them here if you're not Indian (the stores are only allowed to import small amounts so it goes right to their family and friends). I ordered one online but it will take at least two weeks to arrive, so I want to know what to do in the meantime.
So the seeds are very very different to the leaves, if you can't find the leaves then skip it in the recipe and try it without it.
Super easy to find in desi stores. In a box. Called methi.
Been growing them in our, ok my mothers Canadian Garden for 3 years and found out the leaves are edible mmm, I like it this way BEST and in a curry I found, a great use for my mango powder I barely use... yeah....love the seeds.
Have never tried the leaves, thanks for the tip.
Where in Canada? I grew karella the first time this year. I had 4 plants and about 6 karellas so far. I am in Montreal. I have three baby ones on still.
@@knowledge1972 Did not grow them this year, in GTA Brampton... They are available at grocery store but I grow them for leave... this year we grew Strawberry spinach and mother really liked the tender leaf, Amaranth was dismal... Mustard was great though.
@@TheSlovenmind nice. I have never heard of anyone growing mustard. How did it turn out? I also have a lot of strawberry but we had some very low overnight temperatures, +2 or 3. So they have fared well at all. Very few berries. We were in Mississauga last weekend for the independence day. Then we visited some stores in Brampton and Scarborough. I don't know how u guys get through that traffic without losing your minds.
Wow
Hey Chetna why is bitter Can i use regular zucchini for recipes how You remove the bitterness?
Are the seeds bitter as You remove them?
So salt removes bitterness thanks
Yes
No body likes Karela in my house 😟 I love it 😀 but only get to eat it every 18 months or so 😟
Well I dont make it very often either but love it when I make it.
Bob, please give yourself a permission to have Karela once a month. Many people who live alone make what they want as often as they want for themselves..... you too do not need the entire family to partake in your favorites 💚👍
Thank you madam!!!
❤❤❤
Good 😊
Thank you! Cheers!

They are known as bitter gourd, for all those who cannot find it by the name 'karela'😊
Red onions hello!
Ill have to have a go at this, though bitter gourd is terrifying. Every time I tried it, it touched my tongue and my whole body just spasms.

I’m not a fan of karela, it’s overly bitter in my opinion
It appears that karela consumption is not advised for pregnant women due to its abortive proprieties. Just thought that you might ad it in the desc box. ;)
Etienne Ponnau Where is your scientific evidence? That fact sounds strange.
Here : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Momordica_charantia#Adverse_effects
And karela leaves seem to have long been used to induct miscarriage in traditionnal pharmacopae in India and south east asia.
Etienne Ponnau Thanks, but your source is unreliable.
So if I understand you well enough : I said something based on something I read. You found that strange but choose not to google it like any normal person and ask for a source. I kindly link you the article that first tickled my attention on the matter but, still, you consider that's it's my responsability to provide you with a source article that would qualify as reliable to your highly discerning mind. Did I understand your position well? Do you act like that in your daily life? Do you not know how to use google to find out about facts you consider dubious? Do people have to hold your hand every time they tell you something that you didn't know before?
Etienne Ponnau Hey. In the Wikipedia article you listed, right next to the section where they say karela has an abortive properties are the words "unreliable source".
When you go to the actual Sloan-Kettering integrative medicine site, they themselves have a multi-paragraph disclaimer saying the claims made in the post you are about to read are not proven by any regulatory body or is supported by the center, do you want to proceed.
The post about abortive properties is anecdotal. Ergo, at every point, your source is unreliable. I don't need to Google anything. It's spurious pseudo-science.
Do I need to handhold you through how critical thinking and deductive reasoning works? Or perhaps you should go back to English 101.
Thanks for sharing though. I do appreciate it.
You don't know how to cook bitter gourd sorry to say. It come out green and soft. Sorry
yes I like it like that! you can cook it how you like
@@FoodwithChetna I'm just saying eventhough I'm NOT a chef I'm can do better than you. Couple of weeks a I was thinking of having bittergourd because I've not had it for a long while. So Id bought 2 cook the first one ok. Mines looks better than yours then 2 days after I cook again much the same. I cook similar like what I had when I was a child, 20 years ago. Sorry
Wow
