They were wayyyyy ahead of their time man.. this band was one of the 1st metal bands to bring forward the technical edge to death metal.. the keyboard stuff they did was so evil sounding.. lol.. I fuckin loved nocturnus man.. they need to do a reunion tour and a new album.. now!! And I can not believe he brought up nasty savage..i use to love that band man.. nasty Ronnie was a crazy fucker, smashing t.vs on his own head n shit, lmao.. he was nuts!! But a sick band live.. Lol.. great video.. thanks for sharing.. cheers from Cincinnati Ohio USA..
What he says about music blurring together if you start to play too fast is so true. But it's really modern death metal that suffers from sounding very monotonic and boring, that problems isn't present in the Tampa area DM bands that were playing at the time.
+90sgamer92 I believe I know why. Back in the days, death metal drummers were not as fast as todays drummer. So they had to rely on song structure. Todays drummers seem to play an "all over the place" style. So the key element of dependency and emphasis on song structure which the old bands had to rely on which was the key to their success.
Awesome. Classic. I remember seeing this interview back when I got that old Hard-N-Heavy: Shred Fest tripe-VHS pack back in 1995. The pack is now discontinued but the interview is on the DVD called Grindcore: 85 Minutes Of Brutal Heavy Metal. The DVD is in stores now. Classic interview. Hail Nocturnus.
I just went back in time watching this interview, wow. Great band reminds me of my high school years. Intense and Unique that´s how I would describe them.
EXCELLENT CLIP !!!! Even the SOUND is great !!! BETTER THAN THE ALBUM-VERSION !!!! They're also very intelligent guys and surprisingly normal/laid-back. I HATE having missed them LIVE !!!!
My friend Anthony Giallanza took me to meet Mike Davis back in 85. I never met a more humble, friendly, and talented guitar player before or since. I spent most of my junior year of high school getting stoned and learning stuff from this guy. Anybody know where Mike Davis is?
I heard a few years ago he cut his hair off , running a computer co. or owns it? not sure , but no more nocturnus . that band was amazing with browning as a singer .
oddgriffin Ive been wondering the same thing for a long time. Wiki dont say much about Mike. Ive heard the computer thing as well. And that he had set up a guitar clinic in Florida not long after leaving the band and that Trey helped him start it. Idk though. Wish he would kept playing. Being only.a teenager then he would be even better. Hes the reason I bought The Key.
Amazing, under rated band. Misunderstood artists in their genre. So creative and individual. Some comments in this interview relate to bands such as Whitehouse, etc.
Fuck yeah this was a killer video - "Lake of Fire" is an awesome track from The Key, and the guys themselves seem quite down to Earth and pretty cool... I'd kill for one of those Nocturnus t-shirts..
wouldn't get that far if he was just a crazy fucker. From interviews and footage I 've seen at least from the florida scene I realized that most artists had a very serious and thoughtful side
just saw today, lol. I gather he's also a reborn Christian apparently and completely disowned Nocturnus and is ashamed of the lyrics on it (probably won't stop him continuing to threaten to sue Browning over use of the name though...)
It seems he's just living life with a career and is an executive for 'calling before you dig'. In today's society with H.R. easily being able to find your name online I wouldn't doubt why he might not want that to be known to his bosses.
@KingTorment , he deserves the right to pull out the morbid angel thing i think, he was part of a band at the time when they changed the direction of a whole movement, next time you see him tell him Australia Loves him
+Jack Lindsay Back then they were kinda considered the evil twin brothers under thrash...They've split since into the more technical death metal and the harder and faster grind stuff.
haha mike browning is hilarious. he lives only but 5 minutes away from me. he always has to pull the morbid angel thing whenever he performs with afterdeath so people will stay and listen lol
Yep no one would be interested otherwise. At this point he's said his story for over 30 years I'd tell the interviewer not to bring it up, but then the interview would last only 5 minutes.
One of the most underrated Death Metal band. Nocturnus was such a badass band!!
And Mike Browning is a underrated Metal vocalist.
The Key and Thresholds are incredible albums. All time classics.
Nocturnus. the most underrated band ever.
These guys definitely had the right attitude. They weren't afraid to experiment and they weren't following the pack.
This band is beautiful just beautiful, great musicians!!
God tier Musicians! When i first heard the Key it blew my mind. Still on my playlist and has aged so well 🤘
Second to none. They defined their own kind of music. Legend.

Nocturnus is a bad ass DM band. I love 'em.
I love this band

Hail Nocturnus! This is from the Hard´n Heavy videotape. I love it.
in those day a metal band with keyboards was so weird, todya is so usual]!
Nocturnus the greatest death metal band next to death I think keyboards sound bad ass in metal u can make some spooky sounding shit with a keyboard
Morbid Angel are pretty average now but in 2000 they were absolute monsters.
Fuck yeah this was a killer video - "Lake of Fire" is an awesome track from The Key, and the guys themselves seem quite down to Earth and pretty cool... I'd kill for one of those Nocturnus t-shirts..
Damn, I love the fragments of lake of fire live!
wouldn't get that far if he was just a crazy fucker. From interviews and footage I 've seen at least from the florida scene I realized that most artists had a very serious and thoughtful side
Look Louis Panzer up on youtube to see what he's doing these days. Worth a laugh

That's Dig, creator/owner of Earache Records.
CLASSIC line up..its actually live in that warehouse...whos the bass player...not bass...this tune rules
This band makes me want to watch the movie "Krull"
ehh i wouldnt call Nocturnus Grindcore, more like epic-death-thrash-sci-fi-orgasmic-techno-amazingness
Totally agree with having the keyboards!
Sublime !!!
I want a fucken Nocturnus shirt
old masters!!!!!!
Holy shit, best live video of them on youtube I'm pretty sure.
Doesn't Mike Browning look like Wayne from Waynes world? xD Nocturnus rules
This is what i'm talkina bout
They did try doing something different and the keyboards add a bit of texture. They could have done with a bass player though.
Nocturnus is one of the only 4 Death Metal bands I listen to.
What are the other three?
@KingTorment , he deserves the right to pull out the morbid angel thing i think, he was part of a band at the time when they changed the direction of a whole movement, next time you see him tell him Australia Loves him
@ioldarnech it was Jackson Warrior. I think Rob Cavestany of Death Angel were design it.
I want this live recording! Is there any way to get it, not the music video... ???
Yeah man they seem pretty hard to find.
1:58 lol!!!!!!!
Lake of fire
wow what was emperor doing in 91
@diziamonddave you got that right bro
Is that recording of Lake Of Fire the live audio from the video shoot? It sounds so different...
Greg Quady it’s live audio. They probably just did a live session.
I hardly recognize louis ? wtf !
who is the guys face at the end?
i swear ive seen him before
@SSlashDementia the old skwl Death logo on my right shoulder :D
im confused , ive been into death metal for years, but is it ok to loosely coin death metal band as grindcore?
+Jack Lindsay Back then they were kinda considered the evil twin brothers under thrash...They've split since into the more technical death metal and the harder and faster grind stuff.
@hellionsentinel, I thought it was Leornado De Caprio :))))
I've got a nocturnus tat
and a Death one =]
Who is this bassist? What happened to him? He wasn't on the album was he?
Take my friar
what year is this?
@diziamonddave You don't think Formulas...', 'Gateways...' or 'Heretic' were good albums?...
@Destroyer666AU what of?
haha mike browning is hilarious. he lives only but 5 minutes away from me. he always has to pull the morbid angel thing whenever he performs with afterdeath so people will stay and listen lol

Yeah, This will sound typical but I'm so fucking ashamed of all the deathcore bands...
