    Ordered my sp 404 today and glad I found a solid toturial channel already , for me you hit the right flow of info which is scarse. Nailed imo with the yourney of getting to learn your piecse of gear inside out. I bought a tr8-s 2 years ago used it many many hours and im still learning stuff but its all about getting yourself to that magical moment where you feel in control of your device enough to make cool stuff with it.

    Asking what someone else likes is also cool. Being curious and listening, it can lead to you finding new music or appreciating music you wouldn't listen to and can help build a connection. Save the weirdest stuff for a third date. My last partner showed me Arca. I showed them Sunn. Both outside our usual comfort areas. But we didn't start there.

  • @sinewaymusic
    @sinewaymusic Рік тому +8

    I think the dark side of tip 3 is that it's not just about learning the features, it's just as much about getting to grips with the entire workflow paradigm. Things like accepting that you have to commit to the effects and be prepared to go back more than a number of steps if it turns out you applied a bit too much reverb on that hi hat that you already resampled and printed as a stem because you had to free up the FX buses for other stuff. I find this to be the hardest part coming from the MPC and DAW workflow of working with inserts and sends. I'm not sure the SP is for me no matter how fast I get at navigating the features to be honest.

    • @VJFranzK
      @VJFranzK Рік тому

      yes, after you learn what "non destructive" is, you want to keep it separable! yet perhaps it's a reason to return to a simpler, minimal era. (infinite tracks, etc. ask to be filled, if they are there)

    • @bakerman3039
      @bakerman3039 Рік тому +2

      I think the honest answer is that the SP wasn't isn't and won't be a real beatmaking device. It is a sound creator, a fast sampler. Stop trying to make songs on this, try to make simple beats that sound freaky ... and then export it to a sequencer.

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic Рік тому +1

      @@bakerman3039 I agree, that's how you need to think about the SP to remain sane. Yet, Roland seems to work so hard on turning it into a (miserable) groovebox.

    • @VJFranzK
      @VJFranzK Рік тому +3

      @@bakerman3039 tell that to those making songs and beats on it. ; - ) but your point is well taken, it is intended as a minimal device. I just wish that the resources within were better allocated so it would be easier to use, because I believe that really was their intent! hopefully more firmware updates could improve this, but if not, consider how the mark 3 might be better designed control wise.

    • @bakerman3039
      @bakerman3039 Рік тому +2

      @@VJFranzK I would say the nice things about the Sp MK2 are the effects which really nicely emulate the older Sps, the good polyphony and the Bus effects. You shall sample your own sounds, mangle it through the effects and at the end you could build a nice loop with the little pattern sequencer (not Tr mode). That's it. That's the machine. I was very dissapointed that the 3.0 didn't get us new effects. The effects are the main reason to buy this machine.

    Good vid. My alternative tip 2, for me anyway, is don't spend hours building up a massive library of sounds 😂 I find this claustrophobic and feel a small carefully curated library is much better. But I guess it maybe depends on what genre you work with

    • @spvidz
      @spvidz  Рік тому +1

      If it works for you thats dope. I am realising that having a resource pool of sounds is really useful to have to hand rather than having to load up youtube etc when i want something, personal thing for me and it stops me getting distracted. I agree though quality can be better than quantity!

      @skibiditoiletbrainrot_ Рік тому +1

      @@ogcidman911 you could always use royalty free samples, or sample packs that happen to be royalty free. The only problem with that is that a ton of people might have used those loops. I try to avoid splice sometimes, and if I use it, it’s mainly for one shots

    I really need to spend more time with the sp. there are 2 things that I find discouraging though. 1 is that I truly love having an actual written manual to refer to. ( I understand with updates, new features are added). And 2, i loaded the dd card with about a 1000 samples and loops. But when I scroll through the sounds to load one from the sd card, only about 200 of them show up in the list. I’m wondering if the sp is recognizing one of the samples as corrupt and not displaying the rest? When I put the sd in the pc to view the samples they are all there and work fine. I don’t know what the problem is

      What do you think about the tone/warmth of the MK2 vs the original 404/404sx? I've heard the compressor on the og 404 is warmer and fatter than the SX. But I haven't seen many talk about how the MK2 compares.
      I picked up a MK2 in a trade but I'm thinking of selling for an og404 bc the simplicity and warmth is more important to me than extra features. I overcomplicate things with the gear I already have, so I was thinking a 404 would work well as something to record to besides my DAW, I'd hope that the fx (og404 comp especially) would help glue everything together too.
      Do you think this would be a good use of original 404?

    • @totalSLACK
      @totalSLACK 2 місяці тому

      @@afk_hesh I've had this exact thought. I'm trying to sell my mk2 right now, but I'm gonna get the new DIGITAKT 2. I'm way more comfortable with th Elektron workflow, and it seemslike it just makes more sense. with the mk2, I can't get a workflow down as it seems like a bunch of awesome functions thrown into the machine, but no real intuitive workflow to where I find myself doing some stuff but never really being able to use it just to trigger samples in my music, most of the time just by pressing the pad. at least the Digitakt I can use as a main brain an program samples in songs where I need them to play.

    • @afk_hesh
      @afk_hesh 2 місяці тому +1

      @totalSLACK yeah the elektron stuff looks really cool, been watching Jon Wayne's Octatrack vids and I love the creativity you can put into the workflow with it. I've been on the fence about getting a model cycles/samples but I haven't looked into them enough tbh
      Also I just realized you mentioned the 303 not the 404 in your first comment so literally all my questions were irrelevant lmao

      @@spvidz thanks, man. yeah... I will check those... I actually don't mind limitations. in fact, things that can do everything are usually a pain in the arse. but some folks--maybe most folks--are actually struck by how much of a pain the sp404 mk2 is alongside its limitations.
