Some are longer than a blue whale. Others are barely larger than a grain of sand. One species unleashes one of the most deadly venoms on earth; another holds a secret that’s behind some of the greatest breakthroughs in biology. They’ve inhabited the ocean for at least half a billion years, and they’re still flourishing. David Gruber investigates the secret powers of jellyfish.
Lesson by David Gruber, animation by Silvia Prietov.
I shudder to think that there may be a single immortal jellyfish out there that is several thousands of years old.
You adorn windows in order to conjure the thought of old jellyfish?
EDIT: OP used to say "shutter". I'm not a hyper-corrective grammar Nazi
fucking homophones.
holy shit
maybe one's been lucky and survived a million years
cooldude56g maybe
There probably wouldn't be a single one, most certainly quite a few, and not brothers or sisters, but twins, with exact same genetic layout
Kinda like bacteria
jellyfish's secret to immortality: keep yourself hydrated!
yjfy
have no brain. Thats it.
As a creature of the sea, that's a pretty simple endeavor.
Haha I was looking for this comment 🤭😁
*Went ahead and asked a Jelly fish... What's the secret to your survial??*
*The jellyfish replied: Its simply a No-brainer*
Lol, water you talking about?

THEY MAKE JELLY NOT JAM
All we need now is a peanutbutter fish.
i think it’s really cool that there is some immortal jelly fish out there that has lived through all the crazy parts of history, the jelly fish wasn’t apart of those things but it’s nice to think about how it has lived during lots of tough times in human history and still made it through ok... makes me feel a bit better

No brain though
Im glad no jellyfish has evolved to live on land but if one does I bet is going to be in Australia
Yup
Most probably hahaha
In capitalist amerika, you eat animal.
In bat-s**t crazy autralia, animal eat you!
They said something about the box jellyfish being able to kill you in five minutes. Guess what?
It's Australian.
Of course it is xD
wish there are also jelly birds, 95% made up of air
Karlnikolas Alcala lmao 🤣
then we could call them air heads
Atmospheric jellyfish are real
they would be like balloons xD
Hopefully minus the stingers 😅
"Immortal Jellyfish" woah
It's not immortal, per se, it just regenerates back to its basic form over and over again.
Nikhil Krishnan like, multiple life cycles, without the death and births inbetween?
+Tis I, FancyFangs When see the word "immortal" I think *can't* die which does not describe that jellyfish. Any sharp object will show you exactly how mortal they are.
Immortal is a misnomer, a creature that does not age can be called ageless, but they will still die if you drop them into the sun, another creature that does age but does not die due to ageing (some lobsters) can be said to never grow senile, but still pretty mortal if they get eaten by a predator. These jellyfish can effectively re-spawn as a baby, but can still be killed, so not quite immortal. I doubt anything is immortal in the true sense of the word.
The word used these days is 'amortal'. Something that won't die in the natural course of events but would perish given a freak accident etc.
In Brazil we call jelly fish with a much more apropiate name "água-viva", translating it would be "living-water", makes much more sense, rigth?
Sim, faz sentido, já que elas são 95 por cento água.
we call them "sea mothers" but i have no idea why
Well, calling them a fish made of jelly is also prety accurate to
No. I think gelatinous zooplankton is more appropriate actually.
@@switch-no-comply778 It's all about perspective man. I wanted people to call them "Hentai water tentacle professor's" but nobody agreed on that either. Probably because the name is too long.
Wait... Some are LONGER than a blue whale?!?
asalmirkhani Yup, the longest is called the Lion's mane jellyfish, about the length of 3 school buses
ImNoobToo holy shwitzanoly
ImNoobToo yeah, I did my research after seeing the video.. What a fucking beast
ImNoobToo I wanna be a Lion's mane jellyfish in my next life
Thumbasher But because bootlace worms can easily stretch to several times their natural length, it is possible the worm did not actually grow to be that length.
"Some are larger than a blue whale"
Well now I have a new irrational fear.
*longer
just don't go near oceans
@@shafqatishan437makes it sound beautiful rather scary
Don’t worry, unless you are diving super deep or visiting the North or South Pole, you have nothing to fear. On the other hand, some of the most dangerous species are microscopic and live near heavily populated human settelments, so you should be scared about that.
My only question is why don't we have more scientists studying these fascinating creatures?
Adrian Creates jelly fish
Cuz they already did..? Ocean is huge most of them isnt even found yet
Because some things just need to be left alone, Man can barely manage human studies
Research consumes a lot of money and is a long-term investment. Nowadays investors would rather spend millions in short-term scam business to profit quickly
@@chilloutlemur9979 We aren't gonna get anywhere like that ;/

but thats not the sense of "living". Immortality might be the sense of "existing"
jellyfish: im immortal
me: *puts the jellyfish in the land* your dead
Well Immortal Doesn’t Mean Invincible Wait....
immortal doesn't mean that they cant die, it means they cant die of old age. They can die of natural causes like predators and humans that plop them on land.
@@bridgetgossett.marine.biol8580 somehow I laughed at this mainly because of the use of the word plops (it's not a bad thing) 😂
Edit : The original comment was "Plops jellyfish on land. You died"

my thoughts 501 Fix your grammar first.
I don't think there is anything immortal except jellyfish
Umenemo lizards can or could be immortal...they have regenerative healing
But none of them are immortal in the sense of this immortal jellyfish.
Jellyfish are my favorite animals now. They're so cool!
you jelly?
Very.
this should be the top comment, but then again, I am a sucker for puns :)

Jelly fish: Lokks like I'm aging TIME TO TURN BACK TO A BABY AND BE IMMORTAL.

Jellyfish replies: Welp, you’ve got all the others pretty good already.
jellyfish remind me of aliens
Saurabhav super cool aliens
Yea they also remind me of a species that's never been confirmed
they are probably aliens as it is theorized that meteors and astreoids hitting the earth before it had any life contained the first building blocks for it.
Saurabhav or maybe jellyfish are native to planet earth and we humans and other animals are aliens
THEORIZED is the key word there
4:23 Jellyfish manage to take over the world... before cats.

We humans think we are so powerful and yet we can't avoid death while these simple/complex organisms can.
E.T Lindt you'll find as you explore the animal kingdom the most simple of creatures have some of the most amazing abilities
Well it is in their nature, we are supposed to die to balance the ecosystem otherwise humans will over run the earth because we dont have natural predators.
@@apdroidgeek1737 there is no such balance like that in nature
@@apdroidgeek1737 Well science has reversed all that. Humans are able to reach maximum life with modern medicine. Even new research is being funded into longevity medicine to achieve immortality. Humans are the most egotistical creature on this planet.
@@KuroKumo96 of course there is a balance which if disrupted cause catastrophe. One such disbalance is global warming causes by human activities. Nature loves balance.

Jellyfishes deserve a lot more attention than we usually give them
So we need at least 500 million years to have immortality? I can wait that long.

I live in Hawaii and in the summer, we’re plagued by Portuguese Man of War and Box Jellies.
I want to see a video about deep sea creatures that live around the hydrothermal vents. Am I wrong in thinking that these animals could have been around the longest of any "animal"? The deeps oceans have been around forever and have went relatively unchanged compared to the land masses
most deep sea creatures have gone relatively unchanged since prehistoric times.
Well the oldest are the "bacteria similar" archea. Most of them are thermophile, so they die at temperatures beneath 90°C. Also like all other species have them as grandparents.
And the coolest thing: some of these might live around Europe, one of Iupiters moons. on this moon there is water and fountains and there is the chance, that some of the 'soil' of Io, the moon which is before Europe, might have blown over and life developed.
IF there is life there, it would be independent from our sun, because the light barely reaches out there. there is just jupiter and his heat and also these sulfides, that also appear around hydrothermal vents.
I think you mean Europa, not Europe. :)
Yes^^ I just wasn't sure how she is called in English, so I guessed that it is too like the continent. Well, close enough^^

How do I like a comment multiple times cause I want to like this comment more than once
I'd definitely choose to be immortal if I could just return back to a baby. That way, I could just read about my past life instead of remembering it but not have the immortal time perception problem
Then you'd have to document EVERYTHING in order to remember your life. What if you forget something? Then it becomes lost, forever
0mn0m8w31rdc4ndy I could just write biographies, and my current life would study it by their own interest so that way they wouldn't have to.
You can't guarantee you'll be the same person, the whole prospect of it is just scary tbh. Better to upload your mind to a computer.
Kinekuri But that's what makes it so interesting! Think about it; you don't know if you'll ever be the same. Just the genes will be the same, no guarantee about the personality. That means that you won't be bound by your past lives.
It may be just me, but I'm big on material things. The idea of teleporting people by transporting information and reconstructing it through other atoms scares me and so does uploading your consciousness because I don't know if it'll accurately represent me. However, things like retaining brain functions and putting it through a robot and immortality through cycles of literal rebirth make me certain that I am still me in a literal sense.
Today we _could_ repair our our old computers and other gadgets to make them last practically indefinitely. But we do not -- everybody wants the newest model!
One day, biotechnology will get so advanced that it will be possible to repair humans and make them last forever. Do you think many people will want to stay _the same_ forever? Because if we could repair humans, we would probably also be able to "upgrade" them in many fantastic ways. Wouldn't you want to experience the world as a bird does, or be able to swim to the bottom of the ocean, or be able to comprehend the mysteries of universe better than Einstein? And if you do change in every fantastic way possible, are you still going to be you?

this animation and soundtrack gave me goosebumps! i hope ted ed makes more vids like these!
Although still impressive, in my opinion, a "life" cycle like that of the "immortal jellyfish" makes more sense for creatures predating the dinosaurs because most of them were less complex.
This is such a great video!! My only criticism is it seems like you showed the jellies stinging with their bells. While some jellyfish can and do sting through their bells and tentacles, most only sting with their tentacles and it is perfectly safe to touch their bells! Otherwise this video is awesome :)
And jellyfish don’t have a brain or blood
I love listen to David Gruber voice and jellyfish it's really help me sleep. When I had a hard time to sleep, it's really help me calm n make me sleepy, idk why but it's happen to me all the time..
Jellies are my favourite animal, and they are sadly so underrated. We need more jelly appreciation hoomans!

Uhh how do jellyfish evolve? At the beginning of microorganism, are they really just a jellyfish?
I don't know if you take requests, but why do we cry when we are sad?
i believe they did a video on that some time ago. long story short though, it's thought to be a message to nearby humans that we are experiencing emotional stress, and to help relieve our stress.

I REPEAT! THAT JELLYFISH KILLED DEATH!
These are explanations that i think how they could longer than most ocean creatures are 1. they were made from the easiest things around that time. 2. They have a lot of variations that might've made them live longer than most sea creatures. 3. Jelly fishes doesn't have an arch nemesis unlike most sea creatures so it doesn't constantly evolve for survival.
i wonna have the immortle jellyfish as a pet, so i never need to be sad ....;D

Keeping jellyfish is hard and i dont think some people sell immortal jellyfish, despite their name they are very delicate creatures. They do sell moon jellyfish they dont stingm
I was stung by a jellyfish once when I was like 10, and the scar took about 5 years to fade, and I'm still kinda nervous about going into oceans as a result
It hurt so much and the jelly was almost translucent, you could only see it by a thin purple line around its tentacles and bell
So pretty hard to see and avoid in even shallow waters

ya know you forgot about the alarm jellyfish which has developed a very interesting way of warding off predators. What this jellyfish will do if it's threatened is it will start flashing various bright colors in the hopes of attracting an even bigger predator to scare away the one that is already threatening them. Ever since first reading Ali Benjamin’s novel The Thing About Jellyfish a few years ago, jellies are among my top special interests. I really, really, really, really recommend the book. I can’t recommend it enough.
This is why they have been my favourite animal:)
My love for Jellyfishes has skyrocketed more than it was before.
Imagine 95% water lives more longer than you.
When I was on a beach in Tel Aviv, I started getting itchy all over after swimming for a while. I had noticed a bunch of dead jellyfish on the shore earlier - and these things were the size of frisbees - so I came to the conclusion that they must’ve died relatively recently and traces of their venom were still in the water.
God is so good! When I look at all creation, at how intricate things are, how things like order and function can be maintained by sometimes the smallest details, I am so amazed at God's wisdom.
