These squids can fly... no, really - Robert Siddall

- Dive into the incredible flying capabilities of squids, and how they use flight as a survival tactic.
--
In 1947, explorers noticed a strange phenomenon while crossing the Pacific Ocean. Somehow, small squid known to live deep beneath the waves kept appearing on the roof of their boat. The crew was mystified- until they saw the squids soaring above the sea for roughly 50 meters. How and why do these marine creatures take to the sky? Robert Siddall explores the high-flying capabilities of cephalopods.

So are the squid actually generating pump-jet thrust while airborne, or do they break the surface @ 100 kmph and then glide, perhaps in surface effect?
And along the same lines, if they can go fast enough to stay airborne like a plane, how far could they go if they really wanted?

Fun fact: Without these flying squids, Nintendo wouldn’t be able to come up with the idea of super jumping when developing the game Splatoon.
Nice!
The animation was on point and made the subject even more interesting !
I was surprised not to hear any mention of the ground effect on low level flight.
Imagine being trickshotted by a goddamn squid
360 squid
Splatoon
Also, Gliding close to the surface of the water, will generate a higher pressure of air below the 'wings', which helps maintain flight. For other animals, this saves energy (as much as 1/2 energy consumption) this is called the 'Ground effect'
Can I ask, does squids use the ground effect or they just glide?
I think ground effect only works well with calm sea
Both. Shoot out of the water gain speed in a downward glide, level out and take advantage of the ground effect at high speeds.
I wonder how many stall out? That would be amusing. Either wads up in a ball or invents the parachute. Huh?
Sailor: ah, this new motorboat is so nice. the money was worth it.
Squid: hallo
Sailor: *visible confusion*
Imagine thousands of years from now on they would have evolved to stay in air for a longer duration and would be able to fly at much higher speed.
Sailors look out their window and there's giant squids flying at the speed of sound
it’d be cool if they even become amphibious and can fly around the sky away from predators and compete with seagulls
SPLATOON
Crabs: *sees birds
Crab: those must be levitating gods that pick off the unworthy.
Is it just me or is the animation as breathtaking as the fact that squid can fly
Another reason why they'd fly close to the ground is due to something called the ground effect. by flying at an altitude lower than the wingspan of your aircraft, the air bounces off the water and back onto your wings, creating more lift.
4:32 is my new background lol the animation is actually amazing!

I think we’re witnessing a small step in evolution of how fish came up from the sea to land
Imagine, the squids that escape predators and fly higher and longer will breed eventually features fit for air will come up....
I don't think air has enough mass to allow them to propel themselves with it, so they will always need water. But they can certainly increase their range and flight duration. Eventually they might start hunting birds.
The reson for being close the the surface must be "ground effect", they fly more efficiently for longer and they will not dip into the water until the speed is low. If they fly high they loose lift slightly earlier.
This was something I never knew but I’m glad I did. The world is so much larger than I ever thought
imagine a distant future where squids evolved to be able to achieve full flight and can just hunt other smaller flying creatures for a quick snack
Flying fish, hold my drink
