I have never seen this series before! I love it!! Before there were the posh sets and grand wardrobes, there was Berkeley Square!! I am American, and I LOVE BBC and British period dramas. Thank you for making this series available.
Wonderful - you cannot beat the BBC for drama and acting. It is harsh but Dickens also saw this in the Poor Houses and child labor in the factories. The victorian era was very hard for the working class.
He experienced hard times when his family lost their money (only recovered due to an inheritance) That's why Dickens campaigned for better conditions. He had actually experienced first hand what it was like
@@stacysatterfield2154 my point was that Dickens actually lived it (when his family lost al their money). Plenty wrote about them but few actually lived that experience.
I love these BBC British films from Yorkshire ,England of Berkeley. Harmons Worth as a noble family is teaching .e how to be proper. Thank you for the lessons.
that’s a pathetic generalization and you know it - there are good and bad folks everywhere - every biography (and autobiography) I’ve read of Winston Churchill suggests that the only love and care he had from an adult during his childhood came from his nanny - in return Churchill cared for her all thru her life including paying her bills after his mother downsized her household and let her go - and ultimately he paid for her funeral and burial expenses - good and bad good and bad
There should have been another series of this it was just so good the story lines were brilliant acting great and I'm sure there would have been more to follow from the ending we got,,, ...

It is no wonder that the English aristocrats grew up into cold adults with the nastiest nannies and some so green how terrible for the children .. great series thanks BBC again
Lila Dove, mothers in aristocratic circles were ladies of leisure. They didn't do much for their children, but left all the childminding to their nannies. As mothers, they were too busy with shopping for fineries, jewels, furnitures, etc; too busy hosting parties for refined people, socialising with superficial friends, etc.
The aristocrats were a bunch of degenerate human beings who managed to spread their evil ways all over the world. Disgusting creatures. "The footman is NEVER acknowledged!"
Ibbie Ikenzebates we live in a world with people of all races being so like that. Everywhere, you will always find the arrogant ones looking their noses down on the subordinates. That happens in even in prisons where hierarchies exist. If you ask me, a thick skin is always a blessing. Its aids our survival.
Well...I know lots of children nowadays that still aren't brought up by the parents, but rather by their babysitters and teachers...no matter what background they come from...
Every year before Christmas my mother would get me to help her box up all my favourite books and toys to send to the hospital. I might add my children’s favourite books and toys were looked after for their children
its over generalised and a different era, sad that they were with a nanny than their parents, but I can't say I like the way we have a generation of entitled children who want constant attention and who seem unable to focus for more than 20 minutes. there is such a thing as adult time. please let me dine out at night without children running around who should be in bed:)
That system of Children being raised by Servants, who may not care about them, then being shipped off to boarding-school - like a Person factory - is horrible; it accounts for a lot. So glad My Parents actually loved being Parents!
Spoiler Alert ⚠ aka "Synopsis" ⚠ 2 "Hide And Seek" 17 May 1998 50min. Hannah meets her young charges, Bertie and baby Charlie. Nanny Simmons has no affection for the children and is hostile to Hannah. Hannah is not fond of Nanny Simmons either after being locked in her bedroom and unable to get to baby Charlie when he was crying. The Countess is pleased with Lydia and insists she and baby Ivo go to the park alone when she realizes Nanny has a cold. Nanny Collins isn't pleased, but Lydia wins her over with the gift of an embroidered needle case. Matty is blamed for the problems in the St. Johns' home. When she meets Lydia and Hannah in the park, she is surprised to learn Hannah is unhappy with her position at the Hutchinson house. (SOURCE= Wikipedia)
The scene when Lydia gives Nanny the needle case took me right back to when I gave my grandmother a pincushion for the same reason. She held pins in her mouth when she was sewing, though she told me not to do that, so I gave her a pincushion and told her she shouldn't do what she told me not to do!
Well; Thank you De epoca (Black Cat). 1. I'm DANG glad I was NOT born into this environment; poor man OR aristocrat (couldn't stand all the protocol). 2. After two "watchings" I am tied to this adventurous/suspenseful series.

De epoca thank you for the upload. You are appreciated. I’m glad that I didn’t grow up in that era. I was born in the States thank goodness. If I were a wet nurse and had someone treat me like that I wouldn’t have a job very long. I have seen movies on many occasions made in Britain in this era, and have seen poor maids being slapped by their superiors. I slap back. So I would always be in trouble. Being called stupid over and over wouldn’t set well with me. Even by the Lord of the House. I’m just that much of a brat I guess.
Right. I'm a believer in the family dinner table but the business of dressing up and going formal every time is 'way too much! Glad I didn't/don't have to do it!
Julie Munro, it depends which class you are in in the U.S.: the poor, the working poor, the middle class, the upper professional class, the wealthy or the uber-wealthy, with the last two classes being 1% of the population and possessing over 90% of the nation’s wealth. There is no longer much upward mobility in the U.S. with the economy so tilted in favor of the richest that people tend to slip downward across generations rather than upward. We have literally reversed the New Deal and Great Society to create a very regressive economic system.
@@inkyguy yes, it’s tough for under classes every where. I was a nanny - and like many poor women- was taking care of other’s children whilst my own were neglected. I was a single mother and no Grandma to help out. It was a very painful experience- but I love all children and did my best. We suffered a lot. Scrapping by. By Gods Grace we survived.
