I save just about every mask video in a special “mask” file. Just started cleaning out after watching yours. The most interesting thing is, as I deleted, I noticed the evolution of mask styles in such a short time. I still have one of my pleated masks from last March. Thank you soooo much! I have been doing extensive research on cloth face masks (from effectiveness of materials and techniques, to various styles & sewing methods). Of the nearly 100 videos/articles/etc. I have researched, your 2nd technique in this video is by far the ABSOLUTE BEST method I have come across - time effective with fewer steps & fabric pieces, efficient and clean cut finish. AMAZING -THANK YOU! I will definitely be adapting your 2nd technique (sans interfacing) to my prototypes moving forward. If UA-cam gave out awards, I would surely give you one :)
Rai Dal-Bak I was an inspector working with an endless array of toxic materials and PPE...I have extensive certifications in all types of filtration and protection regarding toxic materials. Obviously, we are very limited with making her own mask, but we truly can get quite a bit of protection with what we have at hand. The Olsen mask is the best way to go and using a HEPA filter which you can buy in the form of a HEPA vacuum bag or the highest grade/efficient furnace filter that you can find and cut it to at least the size of the pocket. One of the other most important things is that it has to be breathable. Sometimes you have to choose the filter without putting interfacing in because it may be to many layers to be breathable. You don’t want moisture in your mask and sweating isn’t a good thing, so it can’t be too thick and heavy. You can get the appropriate filtration and still have a lightweight mask. You can also double the interfacing without a filter. There’s all kinds of options but the HEPA filter is the best way to go for the most protection, even if that means leaving the interfacing out. The other thing that makes a huge difference is if you seal around the area of the filter with double stick tape that is safe for skin. They sell an adhesive tape for bra straps and wardrobe/clothing that works perfectly. You get the most protection by putting an entire square around where the pocket and filter is with the tape, but at the very least, Putting a piece of double stick tape along your nose at the top gives you quite a bit of added protection. Not to diminish this video, but it is better to put elastic around the top and bottom up the sides to go around your head as opposed to over the ears. Ultimately you’re looking for the best seal all the way around not to mention comfort. It is best to use light weight, 100% cotton and sew in interfacing as opposed to fusible. There is adhesive in the fusible interfacing and that’s going to inhibit breathing to an extent, Not to mention that you don’t want any other funk or possibly toxic goop in the mask.I won’t get into explaining it all and I know it might sound counterintuitive but the filter is what you’re looking for for the most protection even if it’s only a couple layers of interfacing. Interfacing is bonded and not woven which means it filters quite a bit more.. Hope this helps.❤️
Mafresita: Hi. Sorry for late reply, for some reason UA-cam didnt notify me that I had a reply to my comment. I found that 100% cotton of any kind worked best, which includes cotton-flannel (which is just a brushed surface, not a blend of textiles). Thats just my personal preference. I was careful to cut my pieces a little larger to account for shrinkage after the initial wash, b/c my cotton fabrics are not pre-washed. I hope I answered your question ☺️
Gretchen Wenzel: Hi. Thank you for your extensive feedback and insight! I like learning new things and you provided a wealth of info; your profession as an inspector sounds so fascinating. My concern, esp. because I am also making masks for children (which includes a child who has had pulmonary issues in the past), has been potentially breathing in toxic materials that are used as filters or directly touching the face. I’ve decided to play it safe by allowing users to insert their filter of choice considering different ppl’s sensibilities, also now that allergy season is currently upon us. Thank you again for your feedback. Stay safe!
Rai Dal-Bak Oh my gosh… I am in the same situation that you are regarding children. I have one son with a very poor immune system after having stage four cancer. A huge part of my job was knowing what was non toxic and that was a big part of my point that I probably didn’t convey well. Anything that I use in the masks that I making are hypoallergenic and non-toxic.. Fortunately, if people choose to use furnace filters almost all of them don’t have fiberglass in them, anymore but it’s easy to tell from the package. The HEPA vacuum bags Are equally safe, as well.I was trying not to go on and on in my comments, but there’s much more than I could share with you that will make it much more protective. We all know one thing is that we want to help and support each other in anyway we can during these times and do the best that we can. Thank you so much for your video. Oh! One thing is do not use pins while you’re making a mask! If you’re interested in more info re: a few simple things to make them more efficient/protective...let me know. The one thing that I didn’t want to do was to take away from your video. It was truly well done. Thank You!💕
I sure wish I had found you sooner. Nice mask--well finished with a filter pocket. Easy and quick to make. Perfect. This is my new favorite mask pattern. thank you so much.
Brilliant adaption of Olson mask! I have been making these the traditional way. I have sewn plain (no interfacing) for use with a filter insert. Also, I have fortified with medium weight fusible nonwoven interfacing the main and mouth pieces (not cheek) for non med use. Most folks who need a mask don't have a filter, so the 2 layers of interfacing and w layers of fabric provides excellent protection. This Olson mask is my preferred pattern (and I may use your adaptation). And you are correct....one CANNOT use a filter with 2 layers of fabric and 1 layer of interfacing (and definitely not two). So for med folks requesting these, omit interfacing. For regular folks, add another layer of interfacing to the mouthpiece. I stitch a channel in the top and insert the wire. As there is interfacing on both pieces, it fits snugly in the channel. Thanks for presenting your method! (P. S. as elastic is hard to come by, I cut 1" width of fabric and use my bias foot to make tie which forms loop at top of mask.
Wow this is so easy. I don't have a problem with hard but I'm the last minute person and I usually sew a garment that I can wear in about an hour. I'm about to sew this one before a doctor's appointment. Thank you.
Thank you for this tutorial! It was very easy and time saving. The nose piece I did a little different. I cut a 2 x 5 piece of fabric and pressed in half lengthwise. This piece can be cut on the bias which makes it a little easier to apply around the curved top but doesn't have to be. I didn't and has no issues applying to the curved edge but that would depend on the type of fabric using too. Turned short ends in 1/4" pressed and stitch. Fold in half creasing with fingers. Add the crease line to top of liner seam line, pin to keep in place then stitch the bottom only. The top will get closed when the liner and main front is stitched together. The sides will be open so pipe cleaners, coffee bag ties, wire or nose brace can be added. I've made a few already and added the coffee bag ties I had on hand because currently waiting on nose wires. Tracey
OwlbeSewing - Tq so much for this tutorial. I had just sewn up 2 masks in no time. This is the best mask sewing of all i had sewn. Never this enjoyable. I tried the first method. It fitted my asian nose n face so so well. Tks again🤗😘
I don't know if you need written instructions (like I do!) but here they are: 1. Fuse interfacing to front pieces (or to liner). 2. Sew centres of liner and fronts along the curved edge with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press open. Option, but highly recommended to keep mask shape: Press the top seam to one side. Topstitch about 1/8' from centre seam to incase the seam allowance. 3. Fold over side edges on fronts and liner twice in 1/4 " folds. Sew close to edge. 4. With the right side of outer fabric face up, pin liner with right side down, matching centre top and bottom seams of the curved edge. Sew along top and bottom with 1/4 " SA. Backstitch at edges as this will take the stress when inserting filter. 5. Fold the sides of top piece inwards, with right sides together, overlapping the edges of the liner about 1/4 inch or so. Just follow the curve of the fabric and it fits along nicely. 6. Sew along tops and bottoms, with backstitching at inner edges for strength. Press. 7. Turn right side out. Press well!. 8. Top stitch around entire mask. 9. Cut 7" of elastic (or tshirt tie) Sew ends together. 10. Insert ends of mask. Fold the ends over the elastic 1/2 inch. 11. Sew close to the edge. Avoid sewing the elastic by pushing the elastic away from the edge you'll be sewing along. 12. Determine what you will be using for metal piece along top of nose. 13. You can fuse two small pieces of interfacing over the metal piece. 14. Push inside mask up as far as you can to the top of the mask. Sew a little box around the metal piece (start near top, pivot, sew along bottom, pivot and sew upwards. Backstitch at beg. and end. Metal piece is optional. You could also make a box and leave one end open to insert/remove a wire. The mask turns out really nice!! UPDATE: I clip the curved edges. I don't use elastic. Instead I use adjustable slip knot ties. I also sew a channel at the top wide enough for a metal strip instead of a separate pocket. Less steps.
Thank you, Julie. I've been taking notes off several mask-making tutorials, and this saved me a lot of time. Fusible interfacing is hard to get right now, but I think even without the interfacing, this mask design works fine, especially with a filter.
This is the absolute best & most informative video I have watched on mask making. I have been sewing for 60 years so pretty experienced. Thank you for cutting to the chase without showing the actual sewing - imo you are a very professional teacher. So appreciate your expertise and masterful teaching skills.

Thanks so much for your hard work creating this pattern. This is a lifesaver as I’ve tried several patterns and this one is by far the easiest. The filter pocket is an added benefit. I have made several hundred masks to donate to this who don’t have one. You are truly a blessing!
I am a total newbie and sewed my first mask last night - what a breeze! It came out so beautifully and fun and easy. Thank you SO much. Our sewing community have been asked to sew the masks with pockets for local hospitals and senior care facility workers.
I have watched and tried a million mask tutorials and yours is by far the best! I Love the pattern and your video instructions. The masks look great and fit great with room to breathe and they don’t fog my glasses. Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
I have been making masks for months. This is by far the best mask pattern I’ve used! It’s easy to construct, comfortable to wear and looks great. Thank you so much for sharing!
I’ve been really intimidated from other tutorials of this type of mask because of how complicated others have made it. This was incredibly simple and I felt very confident making it as a beginner sewer. Thank you.
This is the best one I have found. I had a nice man cut the pattern on Plexiglas for me. Makes cutting so much faster using rotary cutter. Pieces fit together perfectly. Thank you for sharing!
I really like the way you explain so simply and then show us right away the pieces sewn together. No time wasted watching you sew. Your design is great. Thanks for sharing.
Great tutorial, very pleasant voice! Thank you for sharing this pattern. So much easier and seems like it will be a faster method vs what I made earlier. Thank you, again, for sharing.
Thank you so much!! I have watched a BUNCH of different tutorials and this is the BEST!! I have never sewn anything before on a sewing machine. My mother in law asked if I wanted her old one so I decided to give making masks a try since we will be needing them when school starts. I followed your instructions using fabric from an old sheet and it looks so good that I am going to be making lots more. I can’t believe I made this and it looks so good. I just wish you also had a pattern for children. I saw the post below that said to resize it but I don’t have that option when printing from my iPad.
I am a novice at sewing and this.......was so simple to follow. You gave wonderful instructions and I love the design. Thank you so much for sharing!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much 'owl be sewing' .... I think I have looked at a thousand patterns for masks .... tried a huge number and never happy with any .... Yesterday I completed your pattern and today it's almost lunch time and I have made 10 .... they are all wonderful .... I haven't seen a pattern that turns out so finished and fits PERFECT .... Lays Flat .... fitted and P E R F E C T .... It is amazing how quick you can finish this mask .... THANK YOU
I'm very impressed with cleverness of your shortcuts, thank you for posting them. I am experimenting with making a nose wire pocket simply by adding stitching 1/2- to 5/8-inch from the finished top edge, extending from the center seam and stopping about 1/4 inch before reaching the cheek piece. The nose wire collided with the center seam. On the next mask, I trimmed the top inch of the center seam with pinking shears and added extra top stitching. A wire can now be inserted or removed from either side with only a minor effort of jiggling it past the center seam.
Perfect, with the exception of the interfacing. 🥺 Fusible interfacing can cause decreased airflow due to the way the adhesive blocks the weave of the cotton. If you want to add a stabilizer, using a polypropylene NON fusible interfacing will give you more body and likely do more to help create a filtering function (not currently researched so that's only a guess). That said, my Mom made me 3 variations with only 2 or 3 layers of cotton and cotton seersucker, and they work wonderfully for a full day of work at the pharmacy. Infinitely less irritation around the jaw, and knowing the research I feel confident with her fabric layering process. Thank you for sharing and explaining for determined folks like my Mom who want to do more to take care of the people in their lives while they can't be out and about.
@@heathermckee3433 Like I said, nothing with interfacing has actually been used in any study, including those awaiting peer reviews, so we don't really know the effects. If it works for your trips out, that's great for you. I'm working full shifts in a chain retail pharmacy, which is why I shared the conditions in which I've used the ones made for me. My concerns regarding the fusible interfacing comes from the thought of wearing it all day and my own experience and training in costume and props production that I got a degree in (yay for getting a degree in a career area where work is limited). What we currently understand from studies awaiting peer reviewing is that 3 layers of tighter woven cotton is a better option than 2, but could cause breathing difficulty if worn for a long time leading to hypoxia or moving the mask in ways not falling within hygienic use, both of which causes user risk.
I have been making the Olson mask for awhile now. I followed their pattern instructions, but found another video on how to do it an easier way. Well, your ways are even been and I will give it a shot. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this pattern and tutorial video, greatly appreciated. One thing to clarify is that when you cut the interfacing, you should cut 2 from 2 layers so you have a mirror image of the interfacing. Otherwise it doesn't connect as you show in the video. It worked out though, because you still sew these sides together so it's not that big of a deal but I got worried before I saw it worked out. Hope that makes sense. Again, thanks for a great pattern & tutorial.
I have made several different mask patterns and this looks easy and I may try it. One thing I find disappointing with your video and many others I have watched is that it would be nice to actually SEE SOMEONE MODEL THE MASK so we can get an idea of how it fits! Other than that your video was excellent and well narrated showing construction step by step. I also appreciate that you offer your pattern for FREE! Thank you
@@andchildren Absolutely! Mine fits comfortably and shapes the face (unlike some masks that gives you a "beak" or flatten your face). Definitely needs enlargement for making men's masks.
I have a longish face and a medium nose is fits perfectly. I am wanting to make one for my husband. I wonder how I would make the pattern larger. I let him try mine, lol and it was about 2 inches short on the sides.
c Milam hi there. Try printing the pattern at 105%. I did that and it fit my face much better. The pattern as is was small to me and I have a long face/not big. Hope that helps.

Wow! Great idea! Less pieces, more time efficient. I will be using your pattern from now on. Also, your voice is very soothing, I was sad when the video was over, Lol! I am definitely going to binge watch your other videos 😊
I love the simplicity of the explanations and the mask are so much more attractive and fit better than any other pattern I have tried. The instructor is wonderful and explains everything so clearly. Thank you.
I have tried several mask from different channels. I’m very new to sewing and it’s been a bit of a challenge. This was my first truly successful mask. It was quit simple and easy to follow. Thank you SO MUCH. You have a new follower. 🥰
Tutorial was easy to follow. Love your method which allows for insert and a secured nose wire. I made some adjustments to allow for adjustable length for elastics. Thank you so much! If only there is a way to keep it cool while wearing a mask as summer approaches... Be safe everyone!
The fix for that is to cut a piece of elastic about 18 inches long and thread through both sides and tie off. This creates a double strap that goes behind your head much like ties.
I watched another video where it said you can trace and follow along the lines adding an extra 1/4th inch out. I’m sure there’s a way to scale it on the computer too
Thank you for the great pattern and video demonstration. The elastic interfered with my husband's hearing aids and so I threaded long shoe laces through the casings. And he didn't want the shoe laces to slide through the casing. That was easily remedied by taking a couple of stitches through the casing and shoe laces. He can draw the laces as loosely or as tightly as needed and tie them behind his head for a good secure fit.
I use 45 inch shoelaces on my masks because the people I am making the masks for aren't nearby for fittings. They seem to be working for everyone. Google "cord locks" or "toggle stoppers" . They can be found at Walmart and JoAnn's. They are usually found on camping & outdoor merchandise.
My hubby also wears hearing aids. He likes the N95 style masks with two longer elastics to go over the back of his head. You can make this style the same way. Use approx. 12 inches of elastic twice sewn in so it goes around the head and not the ears.
"Absolutely GENIUS!" is what I thought when I watched how you address the issue with "too many pcs" on the original pattern. LOVE it! My only concern with the seams down the middle of mask is that I would think the blasted virus can enter through the "holes" created by the needle/stitching. I figure that I'd leave out the interfacing (have read that it makes for more difficulty breathing for many people) and use 100% cotton instead. Then I'd make "filters" out of the same cotton for inserting into pocket. The one pc filters resulting from this would conceivably block out the virus. I'm going to play with these ideas b/c I also LOVE the way you address the issue with the elastic. So much smarter approach. You've obviously given this a great deal of thought and time, and have reduced the too-many-steps that similar patterns call for. ¡Mil gracias! P.S. I'm going to apply concepts to young childrens' mask, for ages 4 to 6 (our grandchildren's ages).
This is a great tutorial and design. I've made some with the accordian folds, but those are kind of a pain. I really like this one and am looking forward to trying it. Thanks for putting this out there.
After watching several videos. I've made several other masks but wanted to do this Olson type style. This is the easiest to follow and make a Olson type mask. I especially appreciate I did not have to watch you sew.
I'm so excited to try this mask !!! I've been looking for a new one and one I could actually get a pattern to download. So thank you so much I will let you know how it works thanks for sharing !!!
I use a small piece of scotch tape and wrap it around the overlapped elastic then zig zag it. Just tear the tape off once you're done. It comes off pretty easy.
@@estherhenry220 Good idea. I found that if I butt the elastic together end to end (overlapping about 1/2") on a piece of fabric or stabilizer, zigzag it down, then cut away excess fabric I had a strong join.. Going to try taping it as it is hard to keep elastic lined up properly Thanks
Thank you for sharing this amazing simplified pattern and tutorial! I am wondering what kind of fabric you used for your masks? Did you use the interfacing as an additional protective layer or just for structure? Thanks!!
I gave up on interfacing long ago. I just use a high count white queen size sheet, cut out an extra layer of the pattern and use that. As per articles I've read, the high count sheet is excellent to use.
Great!! Easy to follow instructions. Told we need 3-ply 100% cotton masks for better protection with new variant strain of COVID-19, so your video is perfect. Thank you!!

Please help me. What is interfacing? I don't have any. Any suggestions?
Wow this is so easy. I don't have a problem with hard but I'm the last minute person and I usually sew a garment that I can wear in about an hour. I'm about to sew this one before a doctor's appointment. Thank you.
I’m sorry I didn’t see this pattern first because this is way easier than the other ones I was making. Thank you so much for sharing
How would I adjust the pattern for a child 7 years old?
This is the best face mask video that I’ve seen. Everything explained very carefully and not rushed.
Tracey
T Johnson love your idea, I don’t like the seams of the box in the front. Thanks!
OwlbeSewing - Tq so much for this tutorial. I had just sewn up 2 masks in no time. This is the best mask sewing of all i had sewn. Never this enjoyable. I tried the first method. It fitted my asian nose n face so so well. Tks again🤗😘
I don't know if you need written instructions (like I do!) but here they are:
Less steps.
Thanks for writing them out! You saved me the trouble of doing it! lol
Thank you, Julie. I've been taking notes off several mask-making tutorials, and this saved me a lot of time. Fusible interfacing is hard to get right now, but I think even without the interfacing, this mask design works fine, especially with a filter.
Thank you for making it easier for me to see along with your notes.
What kind of interfacing did you use??
Is this for the first one or the second one?
This is the absolute best & most informative video I have watched on mask making. I have been sewing for 60 years so pretty experienced. Thank you for cutting to the chase without showing the actual sewing - imo you are a very professional teacher. So appreciate your expertise and masterful teaching skills.
You always take your Patterns one step above the rest. You go the extra mile to make sure it's an easy, doable pattern and I very much appreciate that. Thank you! ❤
Thanks so much for your hard work creating this pattern. This is a lifesaver as I’ve tried several patterns and this one is by far the easiest. The filter pocket is an added benefit. I have made several hundred masks to donate to this who don’t have one. You are truly a blessing!
This tutorial has made it easy and fun to start sewing again. The bonus is I am making masks and helping my fellow man and woman!
Best mask i have come across so far...love it.
You are an angel on earth. Thank you so much for the pattern and the how to.
I have seen this "Olson" Style mask tutorial in a different way and this is SOOOO much easier Thank you so much.
Omg Yes!!!! I have been asking myself why couldn’t it be this way LOL!

I’ve been really intimidated from other tutorials of this type of mask because of how complicated others have made it. This was incredibly simple and I felt very confident making it as a beginner sewer. Thank you.
Thank you for the very clear tutorial. I have looked at many and others take a lot for granite. Yours was very explicit.
Great tutorial, your version very easy to follow, one of the best I've seen so far.
It really is. Her 2nd technique is THE BEST I have personally seen so far!
This is the best one I have found. I had a nice man cut the pattern on Plexiglas for me. Makes cutting so much faster using rotary cutter. Pieces fit together perfectly. Thank you for sharing!
Best mask, thank you. I have not bothered with interfacing....still great. Thank you.
Thank you, again, for sharing.
how you get the pattern

Thank you for sharing this model. Its the easiest way to make masks. Blessings.
thank you for this streamlined technique! I don't care whose pattern this is you've come up with a construction that saves a lot of time! :)))
I watched a lot of videos, this one is by far the best for me. So easy to follow, easy to make and very neat when made. Love it. Thanks.
I agree
I am a novice at sewing and this.......was so simple to follow. You gave wonderful instructions and I love the design. Thank you so much for sharing!!!!!!!!
Thank you I have made 150 masks and this is my favorit . Be safe
Taffy Staggs ...Hey Taffy where is the pattern I can’t find it
Thank you so much 'owl be sewing' ....
This is the best tutorial for a face mask I have seen so far. The mask fits just right. Thank you for the template.
I believe that the fusible is much better and safer. It is only one layer and not heavy. I have no problem breathing through it.
Again, thanks for a great pattern & tutorial.
where did you find the pattern? I couldn't find it.

Can it be done without the interfacing as I have none
@@rosaliebaker3042 I would say yes, IMO, because there's 3 layers of fabric. Plus the filter layer. :)

Thank you. Your technical instructions are easy to follow. Best
Thank you
julesbee728 it fits very well , I have a smaller face an am a women. I bet for a man you’d want to make the pattern a Bit bigger.

Awesome pattern!! I liked that you provided two ways to do the mask with the same pattern.
I'd been doing pockets, but making it separate pieces--this is much easier--thank you. But I like adding ties instead--it doesn't hurt your ears!
The fix for that is to cut a piece of elastic about 18 inches long and thread through both sides and tie off. This creates a double strap that goes behind your head much like ties.
OMG, this is much easier than the other mask making videos. I wish I had found this a month ago. Thank you!!!
I'm about to make my first mask. Wish me luck lol thanks for the video!
Love this pattern. Like you said...so many to choose from. I do love this one the best!
not sure if this has been asked but how do size it down or up for different faces? I LOVE how you do your masks!!

Thank you so much I love this pattern! Do you have different sizes for larger adult or kids?
Also interested in a child’s size
@@diggers22 When you print the pattern, scale up to 110 or 120% for larger adult sizes, and down to 80 or 90% for children.
I also need a size for children so I figured I would set my print to fit the page instead of the actual size

Thank you for this version. I have trouble sewing 7" elastic together. Do you have any tricks to do this?
Barb515 me too, almost impossible to do. It gets caught up in the hole mostly. :(
I sandwich some fusible interfacing around it and press. Sew the elastic together and then trim away the interfacing.
I use a small piece of scotch tape and wrap it around the overlapped elastic then zig zag it. Just tear the
tape off once you're done.
You could hand stitch the elastic together.
these are great masks. Thank you for sharing your pattern. It is so easy to make with your instructions!
Thank you for sharing this amazing simplified pattern and tutorial! I am wondering what kind of fabric you used for your masks? Did you use the interfacing as an additional protective layer or just for structure? Thanks!!
The best mask tutorial Ive seen and used for a fitted mask. Thorough and very easy to follow! Thank you!
Why are you using interfacing? IS it for added "thicknesss" or for a "filter" effect? Can I just make wihout it.?
I gave up on interfacing long ago. I just use a high count white queen size sheet, cut out an extra layer of the pattern and use that. As per articles I've read, the high count sheet is excellent to use.
