    CDC on Homemade Cloth Face Coverings
    CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.
    CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure.
    Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
    The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

    I agree that this video was by far the best I have seen yet! Thank you for the very clear instructions both verbally and by video. I would like to mention that the blue pleated mask that you describe as an N95 is NOT an N95...It is a standard everyday mask we use for general purposes in the hospital. An N95 mask filters out 99% of small particles like viruses. This mask does not. The N95 is a stiff, rounded formed mask that does not have pleats. I say this only so the community doesn't get confused and think they are getting more protection than the standard hospital masks provide. It is, however, a great idea to insert a standard hospital mask inside the pocket for extra protection, These are more readily available. Thank you again! I am going to make two tonight for two medical practitioners to use when supplies are low. TI Registered Nurse

Best tip from doctors and nurses: Wash hands correctly for at least 20 seconds, and stay home to protect others as well as yourself.🙏🏼😊❤️

    • @deniseclazel427

      @@katrinmehler5087 I think you could easily sew an extra seam about 1/2 inch from the top edge, leaving end open. I would take pipe cleaner out for washing, (or however you are sterilizing except for UV sterilization). Then the pipe cleaner can be replaced. I'd also fold the ends of the pipe cleaner in so they don't poke through.

    Thank you for this. My wife used your pattern to make the mask using shop towels instead of fabric, and skipped the interface. Also, she attached a doubled-over pipe cleaner above the nose to improve the seal. It is light, comfortable, and breathable. Shop towels are inexpensive and are supposed to be reasonably effective against the passage of viruses. It seems sturdy, but only time will tell how well it wears and cleans up.

    The first adult mask I made was too small (probably because the printer didn’t print to scale). I enlarged the pattern and got great results to fit our bigger faces and instead of ponytail holders I attached some bias tape ties (UA-cam tutorials) that I folded and reinforced. I like the ties better because they don’t hurt my ears.

    • @Ndnative3431
      @Ndnative3431 4 роки тому

      Shelia Ervin I measured my face and increased
      the size of the pattern by about an inch and a half mostly lengthwise (added about an inch and a half to the chin) and a little bit to the sides so the proportions were basically the same. What I ended up with is sort of a one size fits all that actually fits my kids as well because the ties make it adjustable.

    I liked your tutorial. People should not make neg. comments. Adding helpful tips is much preferred by everyone reading comments. ~ I would suggest not using the interfacing if you intend to insert your own filters.(optional) and to carefully clip the sewn curves slightly, but not to the seam, allows smoother curves when turned. I had trouble with the ponytail bands being too tight for myself. I used 7" length of 1/4" elastic for ea. side. Pantyhose can be used also for this. Small wire 3" with ends curled over inserted at top center for nose, and top stitch around it. Can use pipecleaners, paperclip, bread tie, pie pan aluminum cut and folded twice and edges rounded.~ Thank you for your time, Daisy! ~ Stay safe, everyone! And remember to be KIND.

    I just made my first one. It's very comfortable and fits me nicely. It was easy to sew and your instructions are excellent. I have a tip I learned from another maker and that is if you make the elastic a little longer you can put the ends through a craft bead and this will make the elastic adjustable. The bead part stays outside behind your ears and you slide the bead back and forth to loosen or tighten. Thank you so much for this tutorial and free pattern.

    I modified a similar pattern for my own use. I made the filter pocket opening on the bottom, it's a bigger opening, easier to insert your filter of choice. The tension when you wear it keeps the opening closed. I'm using pieces of blue paper shop towels for the filter. I read that too about the glue. Also all those layers might not be very breathable! Pellon recommends light to medium weight sew-in interfacing. I think you could also make the sew-in interfacing as a separate mask (without the seam allowances around the sides) if you want to insert it in the fabric mask but not actually have it sewn into it.

      I went to three Walmarts today trying to get materials. The first 2 had shut down the crafts section, and the managers refused to cut fabric even when I explained what I wanted it for. It's really insane to shut down the only place where you could get materials, after the CDC recommended people at least wear homemade masks. That section requires a single employee. Then need to reopen the craft stores. I would consider them essential businesses.

    I think melt blown filter fabric is a better alternative to the interface fabric. I would think the glue used to bond the fabric would prevent air from being drawn in through the mask and instead draw air in through the sides...path of lease resistance. Just my take
