  • The Netflix original that loves to boast of it's 14million-views, Bridgerton is the pop-cultural mishmash of a sensual period piece. For some addicted fans, they are hooked and the spin-offs have them just as engaged. But for others, the series' painfully thin plot and male-fantasy erotica was (ironically) the biggest turnoff.
But what do you say? Should Christians (or anyone) watch Bridgerton?

    Your take is really interesting.
I watched all the seasons that came out so far, and I really wouldn’t recommend watching season two. In comparison, the first season is the best.
In terms of season one tho, I thought the season started out really great. It seemed to promise a lot of things: an actually interesting plot, the costumes, the music, pretty much a lot of the pros you pointed out. That’s what I thought the beginning of the season promised. However, I do agree that it really fell flat. The season could have been a whole lot better.
For one thing, I really didn’t like how empty the relationships between the characters played out. We live in a time we’re we encourage communication and yet not once did the show actually show them actually talking or even realizing that they needed to talk. I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone else who might watch it, but like the whole disagreement between the two main characters like just did NOT make since to me. Like, the male lead’s reason for why he did the stuff he did was confusing at best, and she just seemed a bit of a pushover, which didn’t really agree with her character at the beginning of the season and even in terms of her growth and development. The ending felt kinda rushed and hurried too; very anticlimactic.
I do admit too, you’re kinda right about the male lead’s acting 😅😅 like, I pretty much only liked the male lead cuz his voice was a amazing! (I’ve got a thing for nice voices lol 😂) however, his acting wasn’t all that great (like you said). And I understand why too after having watched the second season. It kind of explains much. There is definitely this very confused understanding on what actually masculine men are like, and the so their attempt at trying to show actually masculine men was hindered. (If you watch the second season and watch clips of the main actor from the 2nd season talk about his character it all makes sense. Trust me.)
And lastly, I’m glad you mentioned the flat plot. I really have a thing for plots but I think I kinda ignored how thin the plot was because the costuming, music, and (yes I admit) bright colors 😅 was just very eye catching and appealing. Plus, I have a huge thing for regency 😊 (practically grew up on every film adaption of Jane Austen works; so HUGE fan lol 😂) anyway, I really wanted to ignore how disappointing the plot was and how it could’ve been better. In my opinion, the plot could have been more complex. Literally, the entire plot is basically (without spoiling anything) caused because of a lack of communication. It’s not even misunderstanding. It’s just a lack of talking 😅 like, even Pride and Prejudice had a more complex plot! Emma, Sense and Sensibility!?? They had WAYYYYY better plots than this, caused by things that were more than just a lack of communication. (And no, ✨trauma✨ does not make a plot suddenly great.) Bridgeton could’ve been a lot better.
    Finally, the sex scenes.
I agree with you; it was a bit much. It was actually kind of startling for me (even tho I’ve seen Outlander which, from time to time, will throw in quite a scene 😅). But Bridgeton (not to be graphic) made their scenes kinda… anamaliatic? Idk. It was just kinda, weird and felt kind of out of place. Like, I’m not sure how else to describe it in my own words. It’s pretty much like what you said: they made a free porno. It was weird, maybe because of the genre of the film. Regency is more about regalness, and their sec scenes were def. not regal….
All in all, while it was fun watching it at the time, it really left something lacking, so I’ve been on the hunt for better period films (that’s why I’m finally going to watch Downtown Abbey. 😊 it seems much more promising than Bridgeton panned out to be.)
Quick note tho: I will say I am actually really excited for the new spinoff that’s being made!! The one that’s telling the story of the Queen and her husband!!! I’m actually excited for that 😊 I really hope it doesn’t disappoint.

I'm trying to decide if I should watch season 3. I would skip any sex scenes, because it's not necessary, and definitely tempting when I see it. I really love the characters Colin and Penelope, and season 3 is their story.

totally your call! I didn't watch much of season 2 but know it was way more tame on the sexual content. I think using your discernment is always a good thing! Follow your convictions and you can enjoy the show while keeping your remote and fast forward button nearby ;)
