      lawdog490 There's a video out of Australia that shows some very heavy duty trucks pulling quite a lot of loaded cars. Pretty impressive stuff.

    That’s the first time I’ve seen a hi-rail semi actually have a train horn, let alone an air horn instead of using the normal car horn. Impressive CN did this.

    Really this is no big deal. Once you got the cars rolling, it`s nothing to pull them after you have overcome the initial grunt to start the process. The big deal however, is stopping them because that truck weighs far less than a locomotive. It better have plenty of air compressor capacity to operate the brakes on the cars because that is still a large amount of weight to slow down.

      Truck is quite light indeed but it also has rubber tires. that provide much more grip than steel wheels.

      That's how railroads work -- there's very little friction between a steel wheel a steel rail. Also, empty flat cars are relatively light.

    Really nice apply idea use common truck cab to do job on rail, hope it is not very expensive for every country, due to rail track will do not load very much as locomotive engine.

    I would say to kitbash one and buy a cylindrical covered hopper and then cut the top portion off and rebuild it into this car with styrene.

    As I understand it, the move falls under Maintenance-Of -Way - so an engineer and conductor are not required - as they would be if a locomotive were used.

    They're open hoppers, not gondolas. Hoppers empty through the bottom; gondolas through the top.

      ifyou look closely you can see there are two drive tires making contact with the rail which is what's pushing it.

    I find it interesting that the truck uses rubber tires on a steel rail. I wonder if that provides the ability to produce higher tractive effort per pound of weight on the drive axles.

    Can that diesel truck being direct geared by transmission and not electromotively driven be able to pull those railcars up a 13% grade? Like across Pennsylvania.
