thanks for posting this. I saw a truck like this parked at our hotel in Texas (USA) and showed it my grandson, and this helped him to envision how it works. How cool!!!!!
Yes, I've seen these vehicles in Canada, we call them hirails. Sure beats the noisy and rough riding speeder cars rail crews used in days gone by. When following the train, if the hirail had a manual transmission you could hitch on to the last car, put the transmission in neutral, shut the engine off, and save a few bucks on petrol.
Nice. I was wondering what they were called. I live next to the defunct Forgotten World Highway train tracks in NZ. It's now set up for tourists in rail carts so is still maintained. Be a quicker way to get to the local town or just to go down the road to visit mates. Tourist schedule depending, of course :)

I drove the Nullabor in 1975 in a truck I bought in Sydney from a retired engineer. He fitted it out to travel the outback. A 1956 International Harvest truck in mint condition. I got lucky and his knowledge of the roads saved my life so The final leg of my 6 month outback trek was the Port Augusta to Freemantle route. Wow it blew me away and no A/C I might ad. Up early 2 or3 am when it was pleasant say80 degree's farhrenheit , looking out for big six foot tall red roo's. I love Australia for diverse terrain unspoiled by man and the people who were truly peaceful loving souls.. Yeah and the range feed beef topped off with a local beer.
That won’t happen, those high rail trucks work for the rail company, they more than likely have the authorization to be there, so the dispatcher has informed the other trains of their presence!
when i was much younger i used to watch this on my grandma's pc when i was staying at her place, we used to laugh so much at the part where the truck is behind the train and this video has given me so much joy back then even tho i did not understand a single word of english back then
I rode that stretch from Adelaide to Cook. I took the entire journey from Sydney to Perth. It was wonderful. We stopped in Cook for a while. there was an old abandoned hospital there. They didn't name it Cook for no reason. It was hot as hell there.
I did this job in the North East. Because it was a 'commuter railroad' we could only go 30mph forward according to regulations, and 20 mph in reverse. Our titles were track inspectors. Patrol speed was slow enough where (being it was the main line with 4 tracks) we could observe any and all FRA defects and violations. Great job to have!
AIUI the small flanged "rail wheels" are just to guide the vehicle along the track. The drive comes from the "road wheels" which are spaced so they sit neatly on top of the track.
you have no idea how bad i want one of those setups!!! Not sure what i would need it for, and ill most likely get killed, but i just want to try it!! lol
Just curious, how fast in speed can this attain? Considering the lightness between the rails & the car, self-propelling can be tough compared to real trains themselves that are heavy & provide a relatively stronger grip! Cheers

Reminds me of the "Highrailler" vehicles that BNSF(Santa Fe) Railway uses here in the states. Almost every day or two I see the Track Superintendent pass by the apartment complex where I live now. The old Santa Fe Railway runs right behind the complex here in Fresno- It's the main line through the Central Valley. Mike in Fresno, Ca.
That's the very concept I have in mind for a user-friendly railroad. One would drive a vehicle into a device like the car washes use, put the flanged wheels onto the tracks, and drive away, at least until the vehicle catches up to the train and hooks up to it. I would design a vehicle with a front door for the purpose of catching up to long distance trains where people could gather and have a chat or a meal, or watch a movie. At the end of the run, the vehicle would uncouple for local roads.
Its 2023 and i am still mesmerised by that mechanism

Unspoiled by man? The entire continent's ecosystem is in shambles because of man.

Just imagine the driver suddenly observes a full size rail engine coming towards it.... Bang.... Put the car on Reverse gear...full throttle ....
If you have time, otherwise hit the brakes and bail out.
Or you could just lift the rails and wait for it to pass

Oh wait, it's Australia, makes complete sense.
