Great drummer, and a pretty cool, down to earth guy. After a record store show, I shot the breeze with him for a little bit, and we just talked about music getting you through rough times.
@@thatONEmachine I’ve been fortunate in all my encounters with “famous” people- musicians, actors, wrestlers, professional athletes, comedians- all have been genuinely cool people. I have yet to meet anyone who was flippant, or above the fans. Derek was definitely one the the nicest, though. All three were really nice. I met them during the “Crimson” tour in NJ; the best show I’ve ever personally seen them play, though, was the Vagrant Records Tour with Thrice and Reggie and the Full Effect, in NYC, which I think was the same week this video is from. They had just released “Good Mourning”. They were absolutely firing on all cylinders.
@@mattdegnan2989 he fucked his vocals up by screaming wrong for almost 10 years, then when he was going through his divorce was in chicago recording the album with jerry finn and abusing drugs and alcohol. most of the album alludes to his divorce, he was fucked up and sick as in helpless in the throes of addiction, but it for sure wasn't a cold or something. the good mourning era was good because even though his voice was completely fucked he still screamed his lungs out like it was the last time he would ever perform.
I know his voice was “messed up” from screaming, and lots of drinking and smoking. I’m not sure he had acquired the pill habit yet, and I thought the divorce happened a few albums later. Still, whatever pent up frustration and anger fueled that voice, it was perfect for them at the time, and honestly I don’t think it’s been as good since. That said, he seems to have gotten his life together (more or less).
compare this to their performance of the same song on Conan around the same time and you can really tell the difference in the quality of the sound engineers on Letterman at that time. The guitar sounds much better, tighter and more in the mix, the bass sounds amazing and you can hear the whole drum kit.
I have been enthralled by this song since I first saw this exact performance live when it aired. It has become literally my favorite song over the years.
to this day I still think the lines "and I'm living in lack of the blood sent from your heartbeat that arrives in your neck everytime I salivated over you" are absolutely, fucking amazing.
as a long time drummer, That was one of those special moments in a song for me when I felt like one of my favorite musicians did exactly what I would've done in that moment. "The ride cymbal gallop at the end "
OK, first of all, no ones voice is always perfect, especially when you're touring for months at a time, 2nd.. i've seen them live countless times, sound depends on the place they're playing and who's running the board, all i know is, this band has changed my life and has always been there for their fans, matt, dan & derek rule!!!!!
This was a great performance from, imho, peak level Trio: the “Here to the Infirmary”- “Good Mourning” era. Skiba’s gravelly voice was just perfect for the songs, all of which were good. I saw them the week they did this performance, and it was one of the top three shows I’ve ever been to (for reference, the other two were Joe Strummer in 11/2001, and The Smashing Pumpkins in 11/1996). They had the raw energy with just enough polish. Also playing that show, making it great/ Thrice, and Reggie and the Full Effect.
watched again after years the drumming is by far one of the best performances ever seen...this is just awesome, i don't know how he does the fast ride parts (in the chorus and after the "outro") someone an idea? :)
If anyone wants to hear some good Derek Grant drums, get a hold of the Suicide Machines record "Battle Hymns". Some of the best punk rock drumming EVER!
i saw em on the rock against bush tour years ago, and derek would yell/scream dans back up parts in this song (as well as a few others off of good mourning) and it made the song so much better then this.. anybody know why they stopped?
I can't help to be amazed by Dereks drumming everytime i watch this. He's totally awsome.
I know, I’m really going to miss it lol.
I watched the CBGB live show and was out of breath just looking at him. He's a friggin miracle of cardio and a fkng bona-fide beat GOD.
I love all of Trio's drummers but Derek is the quintessential Alkaline Trio drummer.
I was just about to say that. I love the way he plays. It's almost like he's not even trying.
I think he used to play in The Suicide Machines.
Great drummer, and a pretty cool, down to earth guy. After a record store show, I shot the breeze with him for a little bit, and we just talked about music getting you through rough times.
That ending ride part is just magical. I don't believe many drummers would even think to go to such a place! Derek is the best!!
@@chrisradzion2148 I can't to spend a good amount of the day in Fort Worth with the boys and Derek was a sweetheart. They all were.

So fucking awesome
Dude, same. I still remember how I felt watching them the night this aired. I bought Good Mourning shortly after.
This shit changed my life lol.

I am enjoying becoming a fan of this band! Like many of you l love the drumming! I love their sound!
i love how theyre singing on letterman about inverted crosses being theyre lucky charms and the pentagram on the drums. fucking awesome.
I know people love the old drummers, but to me Dereck, Matt and Dan are THE perfect Trio :)
🤘💯🔥💜
12 years late but I like all the drummers. But Derek is on a completely different level compared to the rest. There’s no debate
@@Nick_MaglianoAtom will be great too. But Derek will be THE trio drummer imo. Even if Atom was in the band first
That bridge is amazing never fails to hit me.
It’s a chilling, haunting, bleak masterpiece
This is the golden age of ALK3. It really gets no better

Hmmmm . . . I have a feeling the crowd was a little freaked out by their Satanism. AWESOME!!!
I have been enthralled by this song since I first saw this exact performance live when it aired. It has become literally my favorite song over the years.
I like this version more than the album's one... Dan and Derek are perfect and Matt is so powerfull in this performance!!!
i saw alk and and blink play a show together at the eletric factory like in 03 it was amazing
I remember that tour!!
Every time i watch this clip i have to comment on how great of a drummer Derek is. Every time!
Found myself back here again 14 hrs later. I recorded this on vhs the night it aired
to this day I still think the lines "and I'm living in lack of the blood sent from your heartbeat that arrives in your neck everytime I salivated over you" are absolutely, fucking amazing.
I’ve always thought this performance had a cure-ish feel to it. especially the way Matt plays
And the eyeliner lol
This is quickly becoming one of my favourite videos on the internet...

as a long time drummer, That was one of those special moments in a song for me when I felt like one of my favorite musicians did exactly what I would've done in that moment. "The ride cymbal gallop at the end "

I love that drum in the chorus.....1:23 he's just rocking the fuck out.
dan is the best punk bass player ever. its godly.. so i bought this bass and made his fender surf green one :)
I am not a drummer but I was thinking that the drumming was great, just to realize that many people think the same :)
Really good live video!

Glad to see someone has their fucking facts straight.

Goddamm this song is fucking awesome!

I like this song much better live here than the recording on good mourning.
It’s cuz it’s super bassy
Boss performance, but who's playing the second guitar I hear? ;)
Skiba has a cool guitar
@minorthreat7798 The best album!
If anyone wants to hear some good Derek Grant drums, get a hold of the Suicide Machines record "Battle Hymns". Some of the best punk rock drumming EVER!
Derek is a beast?
@bunsmalloy just took your advice. its amazing
Skiba looks like a ventriloquist dummy in this. I've been holding that comment in since the punkrockvids days.
Rawr.
i saw em on the rock against bush tour years ago, and derek would yell/scream dans back up parts in this song (as well as a few others off of good mourning) and it made the song so much better then this.. anybody know why they stopped?
