Fantastic tutorial video! I am considering going back to the future LOL and purchasing a Langley Recall with fully functioning Supertrue software. You have answered many many questions thanks so much! Cheers 🇨🇦
As someone who worked on a Big 28 for years back shortly after they came out, this video is both nostalgic and a reminder of how advanced this console was for the time. The preamps were clean and can be pushed a bit if desired and the EQ's sounds great. Add in the virtual dynamics, total recall, and automation there was simply nothing else anywhere close for the money out there at the time. And, for the cherry on top you get to have Rupert Neve talk to you during recall! Such a blast from the past, thanks.
I never had a chance to hear the Virtual Dynamics. Issue ranging from the flawed potentiometers Amek used in the "dead guy" series to the power bus became too much. I still have the cards and always wondered if the compressors sounded similar to SSL, DBX, etc.
I assumed they’d sound like DBX compressors until I started working with them. They are far more flexible and have a different tone. It’s a colored tone that sounds a little crispy and aggressive. I don’t have an SSL comp to compare against other than plugins. In that sense, the Super True dynamics are a little more colorful and in-your-face sounding.
I believe the Angela had dynamics as well (or at least the Angela II). Dynamics are not “standard”. It was an option when ordering new. My first Big didn’t have dynamics, but I was able to find a spare set and retrofit it… which was not simple.
Hi! thanks for this video you created... very interesting! could you create a video where you can see the connection of the pc with the back of the console? Thanks again!!!😊
This is just awesome. I have a 501 by Langley, it looks exactly like your desk. Has these DYN lights and Im so curious about this software and Showtime which was also some kind of digital control for these consoles. Did you make the COM cable yourself?
The dynamics were an option at the time of original purchase. My first Big 28 did not have dynamics, but I was able to retrofit them with dynamics cards and fader banks from 2 other consoles.
Oh man luv this iam little late in response but only because was thinking of an alternative, to yamaha dm2000 or tascam 4800, But this setup seems like what would satisfy my fix between out the box & analog mixer console. Just Little Bit More occupational therapy for my fingers lool worth the exercise & Knowledge appreciated the tutorial 👐🏻🙌🏻🙏🏻✌🏻Now You Got Me On the Prowl Search for the setup of this setup.
Hi there loved your show l have a Amek big too I just refurbished her 44 channel big by Langley , Have you any ideas where l can get a copy of suptertrue automation, l do have a old good working 486 computer with a disk drive
Yeah. I have copies, but also I have clones on Flash Cards. You just need a flash to HDD converter. You then pull the noisy hard drive and replace it with a more reliable solid state flash drive. I can probably hook you up. Shoot me an email.
Hello Fellas Where Can I Find this Super True program ? Ill appreciate It so I can get familiarize with it either find this board or something else thatll Be Compatible.👐🏻🙌🏻🙏🏻✌🏻
You’ll need a PC with a 133MHz processor or slower, 16MB or RAM or less, 2GB hard drive or smaller, and MS DOS 6.22 with a mouse driver installed. If you have all that, I can email the installation files to you. Also, I’m in the process of restoring a BIG 28, which will go up for sale in about a month. A vintage computer loaded with SuperTrue will be installed and the PC modernized with an SSD, Floppy emulator, and new PSU. Stay tuned for more. We’re working on a vid series about the restoration.
@LightningBoyAudio think I have old dell with 4gb I gotta double check & yes I'll appreciate it if able send good stuff I didn't know about this program
Stock is very usable. My console has recently been rebuilt with upgraded modern opamps and VCA’s. The upgraded VCA’s are directly related to the sound of the dynamics and I can easily say it sounds great.
Yeah, it’s 100% analog audio path. The dynamics are analog. It’s digitally controlled for instant recall and to maximize flexibility vs cost. The console would be absolutely gigantic if there had to be knobs for all the virtual dynamics controls. Having the controls be digital (like a plug in) saves space and money on parts. The digital controls manipulate the VCA’s.

Damn analog compressors inside! I think I might take this over the Angela then . That’s incredible

Yes, I made the cable.
Hi! 😁 do you know if the amek recall by langley also has the virtual dynamics?
Thanks!
It does. I have fader banks for the Recall and they have dynamics LED’s.
i'm asking this because there is one amek recall that doesn't have those 3 led's near the fader @@LightningBoyAudio

How does it sound?

Are the compressors in it analog as well? This unit is so cool and strange. I’m currently shopping between this and an angela
