- This is our third video in our series, Used or Abused? The Used or Abused series is a twist on regular car reviews. We're going to be bringing you some really great new car reviews in the coming months, but this series focuses on the millions of used vehicles out there and helps you determine if the new-to-you vehicle you're thinking about getting is Used or Abused.
In today's show, we're looking at a 1997 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT. We're going to give you a quick history of the SVT Mustang Cobra and then we're going to dive into the full review of this particular Cobra. We're going to review its engine and drivetrain, its exterior and interior, go over the features and equipment it's got, and then take it for a good test drive. When the dust settles, we'll let you know if this is a good Used vehicle, meaning one we want to buy and one we'd recommend you buy, or an Abused vehicle, meaning run from this vehicle as fast as you can.
So join us for the third installment of Used or Abused - 1997 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT!

This is a *really* fun to drive car and we had a lot of fun making this video. Next we're going to do a Used or Abused on a Ninth Gen Suburban. What others vehicles would make good Used or Abused videos that you guys would like to see?
THE STIPES LOOK TERRIBLE ON THIS BODY STYLE AND I AM A MUSTANG GUY I HAVE 9
Well, possibly how the car looks is subjective and a matter of opinion. And that's what's cool about this community is we can all have different likes and dislikes and still have fun together. For us, we like the stripes on the SN95, and pretty much all Mustangs if we're candid, and we'll be keeping them. Thanks the comment tho, we do appreciate it!
@@MotorsandMischief I THINK STRIPES GO GREAT WITH MY SHELBYS ESPECIALLY ON MY 2 SUPER SNAKES AND MY GT500
Well on that we can completely agree with you! Sounds like a sweet collection
@@MotorsandMischief IAM VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE A 9 CAR COLLECTION BESIDES MY 4 SHELBYS I ALSO HAVE A VIBRANT RED 93 COBRA ALL ORIGINAL WITH LOW MILES AND I HAVE A 04 TORCH RED TERMINATOR WITH JUST 29HUNDRED ORIGINAL MILES THAT I AM DEBATING ON SELLING AND A FEW OTHERS.
I just purchased a 96 cobra recently. This was my high-school dream car. I remember when it was being developed and hit the dealership my brother and I had to see it! Ford finally made a mustang that almost produced the same hp as it's rival's so when I finally snagged me one. My car only has 12k miles on it and looks and drives as a brand new car would. On a note to your video I've seen 32v hit 400,000 miles. Cheers
That's so cool! Yeah these cars are amazing when everything is working right. And super cool on the durability of these engines, that's great to hear. Thanks for commenting!
94-98 SVT Cobras were just perfection
Great review! Sums up exactly the situation and gives great insight to people looking to buy a cobra or even an SN95 in general.
I have the drive train out of a 96 Cobra in my Factory Five Cobra. Few changes; rebuilt engine, now 380 HP, Rebuilt T45, and 3:73 3 link rear end. I absolutely love it.
Had a Cobra years back with a 5.0, man that was a fun car to drive. Yours sounds like an absolute blast! Thanks for commenting!
There's clearly been lots of thought and effort into this video, and it shows. Thank you for uploading
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is an awesome review, nice job! Sweet Cobra!
Thanks we really enjoyed doing it!
I love the sn95 cobras..especially the hood..
Totally agree! We wish the vents were functional but you can't knock the looks
Could they be made functional?
As the prior owner of this car, make sure you can put up with the headaches of working on a niche muscle car. That being said, I love this car so much and I have driven many other fast cars that didn’t put nearly as much a smile on my face as this beast. So if you want a hearty old fashioned mechanical-feeling car that is sheer joy to drive (outside of the winter and bad roads) then this car is an absolute blast!
Well said! They are not bad daily drivers but your love for them will go way up if they are a second car instead of a primary car lol
Great review, these cars don’t get enough love,.
Thanks so much for the comment!
You’re kind of right but They’ve been getting a lot of recognition the past 5yrs and a lot of people have been doing some serious builds with this platform! I am a 94-98 sn95 fanatic! I love this style more than the new edge and I have both a 96 cobra and an 03 Mach 1, I enjoy the looks of my 96 cobra much more than my 03 Mach 1
That's awesome to hear! We've often felt it was only a matter of time before people realized what a cool platform the SN95 is, great to hear they're getting more recognition!
Similar style to your Ranger review, I like it!
Dude I know this is a older video but god I love those cars and I really love the hell out of that paint scheme!
Thanks so much! We loved that car, sadly it’s moved on to a new owner and new stable but he kept the paint scheme and now we’re thinking we need another Mustang around here. Thanks for the comment!
nice car man .!love sn95 i think is the most beautiful mustang.!
We like to say we swear by, and at, our Fords lol, Thanks for commenting!
I have the 98 Gt. Pure fun.
Love a good classic mustang 😸🤟
Us too! Thanks for commenting. Love your user name lol
The rear wing is the same as the gt wing. I have two hanging in the garage.
The motor will sing to 7000 rpm and hold together, lots of fun to drive.
Lowered mine but got tired of it dragging bottom. Stock springs again. Stickers say they are the same as cobra R model
Good info, thanks for commenting! And yeah every time we get upset with that car from working on it, just go drive it and all is forgiven!
I'm from Denver I have a 97 svt boosted
4th generation Mustangs are the best value Mustang you can buy now.
We totally agree with you and feel like these cars are going to go up in value. And then we'll have to add the SN95 to the long list of cars where we say "Man I could have bought as many of those as I wanted for cheap and look at them now!!" Thanks for the comment!
Yeah the lowered look good but they ride like hell… you cant convince that rides better than a new stock height suspension… maybe better than a 30 year old stock with 127,000 miles.. but not a new one. Personally i prefer a stock height for a smooth ride as possible. Thats more important to me than looking like a race car. Plus the cars looks sort of weird to me with those uneven fender gaps you get with lowering kits… makes it look like a hooptie
Love the car!! I have a 98' cobra convertible that I love! Are you guys in Colorado? If so, shot me a message, I'd love to meet and compare notes!
Oh man thanks! We are in Colorado but unfortunately my son sold the car when he went off to college. It went directly to a local speed shop and the new owner is doing a pretty long list of mods and upgrades to it. Thanks for commenting!
@@MotorsandMischief Thank you for replying! Even though you sold the car, I subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more great videos from you! maybe we'll run into each other at a car show, cruise, or cars and coffee! Take care my friend!
That's awesome, thanks so much! Yeah would love to connect, keep an eye on our instagram and soon as we get some of these projects running (lol) we'll be at the local cars and coffee and we'll post on our Instagram where we're going to be!
Me and my girlfriend just got a low mileage cobra for 3500 only needed tires battery and a paint job
Nice! That's a great price, good job. Thanks for commenting!
Where did you get that lip
It's a custom one we made out of a sheet of aluminum. We cut it to fit, then bent the edges up. It mounts on seven points, 3 to the core support, 2 to brackets that go to the k-member and then then the two rods. We overdid it a bit. Sucker has been smacked hard a few times now and hasn't moved. Thanks for the question!
@@MotorsandMischief dam how much to make me one this is sick af
Cobras are usually going to be driven much harder than a regukar gt.. the rich buy cobras as toys and tesr them up and they domt care because they are rich, they’ll just buy another.. middle class people buy the gt’s and care for them better.
Mustang is a sports car.. NOT a muscle car. Having owned a 97, that performance clutch took some serious getting used to.
Gonna have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. A muscle car is an American made, two door, V8 powered car that produces high horsepower but doesn’t typically have the suspension to handle the curves. That fits this Mustang to a T, down to its live axle. To be fair, we Googled “What is a muscle car?” And “Is a Mustang a muscle car?” And every result we found confirmed it is. We’d say you could argue the newer cars are maybe more sports car than muscle car as they got independent rear suspension and better overall handling but for us, no matter how capable they get, they’ll always be muscle cars. A Corvette is a sports car, a Camaro is a muscle car. Why? We don’t know! They just are. Regardless, we can agree to disagree and both love the car and struggle with the clutch. Thanks so much for commenting!
@@MotorsandMischief That's funny, I googled the same thing and the answer is FAR from consistent. Clearly there's room for interpretation here so I'll concede that my statement is more opinion than fact based on that. Rock on.
What's Your definition of a muscle car?
And what cars do You consider to be muscle cars?
Well it was easier in the old days. A muscle car was a Mustang or a Camaro or a GTO. Something that had a V8, was American, and went relatively fast in a straight line, but maybe wasn't so good at turning. So a Charger would be a muscle car but a Corvette would not. However, all the cars have gotten really sophisticated handling and manufacturers have improved everything and nowadays a late model Mustang can out corner most every 'Vette before C6. Maybe C6 too. So honestly, we're not positive, nor are we highly dedicated to our response. We think a muscle car is probably more of a genre these days than a specific grouping of cars, and there are great shop talks to be had on why one vehicle should or shouldn't be included. To us, Mustang's were originally "pony cars" and pony cars were muscle cars. Mustang fought Camaro, ego the Camaro must be a muscle car too. Mopar needs to be represented, but is that a 2 door Charger or a Challenger or what? And Pontiac sent the Firebird.... How many of those makes and models are still "muscle cars" today? We can't say. We're just glad Detroit is still (mostly) building them. Thanks for the comment!

We would never do such a thing as that’s totall[Y] illegal in Colorado and w[E] are law abiding citizen[S]. For what it’s worth the car now has a full performance exhaust on it. Thanks for the comment!
It definitely does not have 4 cams lol. It's a dual cam. Two cams.
It has 4 cams, 2 on each bank. The GT’s have 2 cams and one of the upgrades for the Cobra motor was the intake and exhaust cam on both sides. You can look it up on Wikipedia or any Ford Mustang website. Also, we know because we’ve replaced valve covers and visually counted 4 cams. Thanks for commenting!
Nope. Dual cams on each head! 4 of em. All Mustangs still use an updated version of this motor. They just call it the 5.0L Coyote now.
How can you be so confidently wrong lmfao
I have a 97 Cobra w 40 Flowmaster that make it sound incredible!
