  • Ending of Better call saul explained.
I try to explain the Better Call Saul finale. Did Jimmy McGill (Saul Goodman) get his redemption?
If you had a time machine, where would you go?

I can't believe how fast the years have gone by since I saw the first episode of Better Call Saul.

I don't think people who disliked the ending understood what the character of Jimmy McGill really was. They were confused as to why he would turn down the 7 year sentence at a country club prison because they wanted him to "win." Jimmy doesn't care about "winning." That's Walter White. He only wanted to be on top because he was a lifetime underachiever. Jimmy only wanted to be loved. He wanted to be accepted by his loved ones. Chuck never gave that to him but Kim did. So of course he's going to hang onto her, even if it means throwing himself to the wolves. He has nothing left to accomplish as Saul and never cared about that anyways. Everything he's done has been about the family he's lost. Now they can move forward and probably see each other routinely in prison and cherish the time they had together, remembering their escapades and sharing a few laughs over a cigarette. There's something bittersweet about that.

Creating a 3 paragraph answer doesn’t mean you’re right, Sauls character has been like retconned 5 times the ending was lame and out of character. Even the flashback with chuck in the finale tried to make him look like a decent dude. Stop acting like Saul and jimmy are 2 different people, it’s just a name. He even said to like “what else?” When mike asked if money was all he cared about. Vince gulligan prob just makes all his characters lose in the end so he’s not accused of “glorifying crime” and that’s it

Also it’s really dumb to say someone would turn down a 7 year sentence to a hellish life sentence just because they don’t care about “winning” it’s just stupid to let go of that and makes no sense and is a big reach, especially for a woman that left him that he would definitely be over after 7 years or whatever it was. People are over romanticizing it, if you’re broken up for 7 years, you get over it, the only love that is truly unconditional is a parents love for a child

@@Rg-kp4nwIf you wanna argue that Jimmy still pining after Kim is “Unrealistic”, then very well, but I don’t see how it’s at all inconsistent with Jimmy’s character. The whole reason he became Saul in the first place (And when I say Saul, I specifically mean the Saul we see in BrBa), that was to cope with the pain of losing Kim. Again, if you don’t think that’s realistic, that’s fine, but I would firmly contend that it’s perfectly consistent with Jimmy’s characterization.

@@Rg-kp4nwJimmy and Saul are two people, it’s not “Just a name.” That’s part of the point of the show is that a name has more meaning than that. Now, to your point, at first, it was “Just a name” during the events of S5 and even S6, to an extent. However, once Kim left, “Saul Goodman” became a persona, a protective shield for Jimmy so that he didn’t have to feel all his bad emotions, which is evidenced by the fact that he takes Xanax as Saul. “Saul” is Jimmy’s shield, his numbing coping mechanism for handling his emotions. Also, how was Jimmy retconned? Finally, as for your last point, I don’t at all think that Vince is trying to avoid being accused of glorifying crime. If that were true, then why does he have Jesse escape and live free in El Camino?

@@Rg-kp4nwAlso, as for your point about his conversation with Mike, to me, the whole point of that conversation was that Jimmy was merely avoiding the issue. He wasn’t being entirely truthful with Mike, he was just avoiding the true answer to the question because since S4, he’s been running away from his emotions and feelings, a theme that’s maintained come his transformation into who he is in BrBa. Finally, for your point about Chuck, I can see where you’re coming from here, but the way I see it, Chuck was telling Jimmy that he needed to find a different path, which probably meant “Stop being a lawyer.” So, I don’t at all see this as Chuck behaving out of character, I just see it as Chuck pussyfooting the same way he did in S1 before Jimmy finally confronted him.

I don't think Saul was caught for making too much noise in the dumpster. At the three minute and twenty three seconds point in this video you can see the surveillance camera covering the area.

I don't like the need we have for a moralistic ending for every bad guy. We just can't let fictional crimes go unpunished, even though many real crimes are never solved, and many real criminals are never found. But on TV and in movies we always have to see that crime doesn't pay. I would like to have seen Gene leave work at the Cinnabon one night and just disappear. We wouldn't know what ever happened to him, but we could be somewhat sure that he's still out there somewhere. Maybe still conning, maybe not. But I would have liked an ambiguous ending, instead of one that tied it all up in a bow and made him pay for it all. I don't think Jimmy was nearly as traumatized as Kim was, and he could easily have just picked up another life somewhere else. But leaving his future to our imagination would have been more satisfying for me.

Also to add to your point Jimmy was never as evil as Walter or gus etc he was just an arrogant greedy lawyer that doesn't deserve 86 years in prison 😂😂 he never killed anyone ever sure suggesting murder 5 times but still he didnt do it I expected him to have 20 years maximum not 86 years 😂😂 that's for Mike, jesse and others who actually killed people
But I need to contradict you nobody will hurt him anyway if he confessed or kidnap him cus all the cartel big players are dead walter , gus , lalo and eladio are all gone so there is no one he should've ran

The finale was awful I'm afraid (the whole last season was weak as well). The idea of anyone willfully accepting an 86 year prison sentence for the admiration of a past love or for 'redemption' is teenage fantasy nonsense. The writer's had clearly given up by this point. And they ought to be ashamed at what they did to the character of Kim - married her off to a doofus and had her living in a suburban hellhole was not a fitting or believable ending for such a complex character.

Personally, I don’t see it as redemption, I see it as penance. You’re right to question whether or not it’s him “Redeeming himself”, but I don’t think that’s why he did it. I think he did it to accept the consequences of what he’d done, making it penance rather than redemption.
