Whoa, hang on a minute. The couple murdered in Mexico was NOT an act of whim and wasn't framed as such. Lalo had paid for the man's teeth to have been a perfect replica of his own - precisely so he could pass-off credibly as dead. And in the same scene he specifically asks about the dental surgery. It was a long-planned measure. He (Lalo) made really good plans, and was meticulous and careful. But more happy to improvise on his feet and felt less in need to control all the variables. He was less diligent than Fring, but maybe with more emphasis on efficiency and timeliness. But I wouldn't call this impulsive, just more based on practical improvisation. As you mention in the end! They are both very intelligent, decisive, ruthless and formidable characters. Interestingly, eventually someone even less predictable, more emotional and with less loyalty ties managed to kill Fring.
What makes these "impulsive" characters as you put it, so great is that despite seeming to be risk takers, this aggressive approach to decision making can actually be a consistent method of action. Unpredictability is an advantage and a disadvantage, given that all involved have some level of risk they must manage. If an individual takes an aggressive action and stays cool, they benefit from great advantages with managed risks.
I didn't really like this because if you did all that work and finally found the location of Gustavo's super lab, why not call in a hit squad, of Don eladio? I mean you guys are like a cartel and you've got endless button men as Tony soprano would say. "More buttons than my grandma's corset" -- if you had done ALL this research, ALL this work, FINALLY proved beyond any shadow of a doubt you had found The location.... locations DON'T change. I mean at that point I don't even think Gus couldn't walk away from that superlab, if he knew for sure he was screwed, MAYBE. But why, would you, SOLO, roll up into a cartels SUPER METH LAB!!? I mean I don't care what information you got, it's basically irrelevant because at the end of the day you're a criminal and you've got endless resources where you can tap 9 million from some lawyer that you barely know by forcing his hand basically, to meander through mexico on foot!? I mean to do that is 9 million and expendable income so obviously could have any number of forces sent in, especially if he used Don eladio. You basically can pull it down to one question and it destroys any choices they made.... Would Lalo have been better off, having himself, solo, discover, trap, AND confront Gustavo Fring, the super-genius who put this enormous extravagant and intricate thing together, who has the will to keep up multiple different personalities for decades.... And you thought it best to go and roll up into this dude's home territory solo 1 v 1. Like Avon said, in them away games. So he's not even on his home turf. There could be booby traps in there, precise. He makes very few mistakes they made that very clear. I even thought it was a little bit cliché he just HAPPENED to place a gun 🔫 RIGHT there next to EXACTLY where Lalo, made him walk to? I mean that lab is so massive it's just unbelievable. You're going to tell me that if the whole place Lalo just happen to want to give the bad guy speech, give away his whole plan, AND cripple himself, in terms of holding/needing to drop the camera 📸🤳 he "proudly" brought. I love the riding because it is definitely better than most other shows but sometimes the stuff is just so dumb and nonsensical and opposite of reality that I just can't suspend my disbelief. You are CARTEL! why would you roll solo!!!?? Give me One Reason much less a good reason...
Up till this point, he was assumed dead and he didn't know whom to trust outside of his uncle....he trusted Nacho and look where that got him. I'm sure his plan was to do all this in secret and then expose gus once he had all his evidence

Lalo is like a combination of Gus and Jimmy’s spontaneous street smarts.
It’s pretty obvious. I mean, the show explained it all. He was less known to guss
