Update It's been over 1 1/2 years and I am able to still train in the martial arts. I do find that when I over work my knees they ache a little and feel tight. I am glad I did both of them at the same time.
Cliff, Thank you for taking the time to document your recovery. You inspired me to work hard on my rehab. I had bilateral total knee replacement 1/13/2017, I am almost where you were at 3 weeks post op. I am 65 and in good shape with a few extra pounds on me, (not in as great of condition as you), but a major part of my motivation is to be capable of getting back into the gym and back into my P90X routine. I am very pleased with my recovery, am driving, walking stairs and use a cane in public. Have a ways to go but am straight on my left knee 4 degrees off on my right knee and both are at 109 degrees bend. Many have indicated that bilateral knee replacement is very difficult but having a positive mental attitude and the drive to work my rehab is paying off. I have stiffness and aching/burning in my knees at night. I stopped all pain meds after one week but have gone back to taking pain meds at night which has helped me have restful sleep which is needed for my recovery. Your videos have been very influential in my recovery! Thank you again. Best Regards, Gary Zimmer.
You are welcome. That is why I made the video to help others know that you can have a great outcome if you prepare and stay positive. It has been almost 4.5 years since my replacements. I had my shoulder replaced March 9th and I think the recovery is much harder than the knees.
Thanks for posting this. I'm a life long martial artist as well, about the same age as you, and considering a bilateral knee replacement....so this helped.
I appreciate your sharing of your experience. I think it best you let people know that your results are not common. You are in GREAT physical shape and have practiced martial arts, teach it etc for years. When i had this operation, as I did two weeks ago, the timeframe for recovery will likely not be like yours. After two weeks, I can walk with a cane/walker but am in a lot of pain. I think it will turn out well. Thanks for understanding
It's great that we have joint replacements. Imagine what it would have been like 200 years ago. I was scheduled to have my shoulder replacement but I may have cancer in my right kidney. The good thing it was found early and if it is cancer my kidney will be taken out before my shoulder is replaced.
Thanks Cliff. I'm having bi lateral knee replacements this morning. I have been watching your posts over and over the last few weeks. I cant wait to get my new knees!! I will be going into and out of surgery with a smile on my face and giving a Big Thumbs Up!!!! Thanks Again!!!
hi cliff I had my double knee replacement on Wednesday April 20th and I survived. the pain is worse than I could imagine. I walked with 2 people and walker 20 feet to the bathroom yesterday. today they're moving me to the rehab facility for like 6 days. it just hurts so bad.
Well done, Cliff! I've had both hips replaced, and I've just been put on the list for Bilateral TKR. I used to train in Krav Maga, and I'm hoping to get into boxing when I'm healed. That is impressive for 12 days out!
+Liz Dee Wishing you a great surgery and getting back on your feet in no time. I up on 3 years next month and knees doing great. I do have 2 shoulders to have replaced in the next few years.
+Cliff Lenderman Clif, I am a retired Marine of 32 years, turned 17 in Nam, stand 6'5" and 275. had my left shoulder and left hip repolaced, Jan 2016 new TKR, I lift weight daily at 67, live with six wolves as house pets. Plate inmy back and one in the head. I beat cancer 3x, Hep C, . I look to you for incentive. Weight lifting has been my salvation.
+tripods66 You are the bionic man and thank you for your service. I served 4 years in the army from 1973 to 1977 but didn't make it to Nam. I stopped lifting weights since my shoulders are getting really bad. I turned 62 this month and waiting for 3 more years to get both shoulders done when I am eligible for medicare. You will breeze through the TKR since you sound like an amazing individual.
Hi Cliff, I'm 48 years old. 4 years ago I had a partial knee replacement, now I'm told other side of my one is shot and my other knee is also done, stage 4 arthritis. I'm a server so I'm on my feet all day. I'm getting a simultaneous knee replacement in April and I'm scared to death. I'm so afraid of not being able to have a good leg, any words of encouragement. Love your video.
+Lisa Kochansk When I first blew out my right knee in a ski accident in 1989 the recovery from the ACL was rather painful. I had the ACL redone in 1998 and with new technology and pain control it was a much easier recovery and hardly any pain. When I had my bilateral knee replacements about 3 years ago I was expecting it to be much more painful than it was and slow to recovery after seeing all the videos on youtube. I made this video to show others that if you go in to the procedure without fear and be positive your outcome will be so much better. I believe that positive thoughts create positive results. You will have a good leg if you come out of your surgery and do your exercise to strengthen and stretch every day. BELIEVE.... Cliff
thank you so much I'm doing this in June and so afraid I'm 45 with bone on bone arthritis on both knees and I want to get this over with but still afraid but I'm already in so much pain I use a cane 100% of the time can't even go grocery shopping I'm bored to death lol
There are times when I don't work out my knees feel like the old ones. I am very active so they tighten up and its not painful but more irritating. It sure beats the pain I had before the replacements.
Need both knees done have put it off for years but now the pain is so bad I can only walk for a few minutes then have to lay down. Going to doctor in few days am worried about doing the surgery but seems it's the only way that I mite get some relief
Mr Lenderman, Thanks for sharing your experience. My name is Eric I also require bi lat knees as well. Any advice or recomndations now you have had the replacmets?
+Eric Baugh Watch the 3 videos I posted and read through my response to questions on the video. I think I covered most of what you need to know. It's been over 3 years and glad I had them done. Once you get out of surgery keep a smile and stay positive. Your attitude determines the outcome!
Fantastic, Cliff! I anticipate double knee replacements and am concerned about post-op recovery. You're an inspiration and have made me very hopeful. Thank you. How are you doing now, a year out?
+Marion Odgers Thank you Marion. I am coming up on 3 years next month and the knees don't bother me as much as they did the first 2 years. It takes a long time before you don't get this burning sensation. That feeling is no longer there but when I over work my knees I know it.
Oh man.....I'm going in on the 22nd of September for my left knee, and to be honest, I've been really, really stressing about it. I'm about 25 pounds overweight, but I am an avid walker -- 4 or 5 miles a day -- and I'm a gym rat, lifting at least 3 times a week. I also still play softball, at 66. If I can have results HALF as good as yours I will be extremely delighted!! Any tips, as I'm now about 3 weeks away from surgery?
good job with video... and helpful information ... the positive aspect of your thoughts is most helpful.... our delivery of surgery is consistent and its the management of the patient that is most important ... great job K Bramlett md orthoalabama
+Kenneth Bramlett Thank you Kenneth. I am trying to go as long as I can before the two shoulder replacements but I know I will do wellI will stay positive and work hard for a great recovery.

That is amazing! I'm able to walk but not as well as you and I'm 5.5 weeks! You are a machine and an inspiration.
Thank you. Heading in for my shoulder replacement today! It's been 4 years since my knee replacements now time to fix a shoulder.
Thanks Cliff on your video. I am going for my Total Knee Replacement in May 16 and I am quite worry. Your video must be 2 yrs or more ago.
Nice segment. Recounting what day after surgery each event happened helps. Pretty impressive, thanks for sharing
Having been through this 4 and 1/2 times, u r amazing.

I just had my bilateral on Feb 14, 2012. I am starting my physical therapy today. I feel a little behind.
Unbelievable. I am up for bilat Monday. You are my hero.

Has this been the minimally invasive joint replacement?
Congratulations! Im glad it went very well for you. Do your knees feel like your old knees or is it different?

I wouldn't see why it wouldn't. It helped me basically be pain free.
