  • I needed a plough plane/grooving plane for a build, so I made a quick thing to see if it will get enough use to justify making or buying a better one.

Hi friends! Since this has become one of my most popular videos and is still getting views, I'd like to tell anyone watching now, 1.5 years later, that this tool is not good. It was the first plane I made and I didn't understand what makes them work. The problem is the lack of sole in front of the blade, which causes it to dig down and be impossible to fully control. I later made a new version which was constructed the same way from layers of plywood, but with a full sole and a wedge for the blade instead of the set screw. It works much better and you can see me using it in newer videos. Turns out there's a reason planes were made like that for hundreds of years, who knew! Anyway, thanks for watching, I do appreciate the views and likes and comments, but I hope you won't judge me based on this one early toolmaking mistake ;)

I can’t seem to find the newer video. Is there a link? Thanks!

@@yankinsheffield Thank you for the interest! Honestly I'm not sure anymore which videos I was referring to back then ("newer" was written two years ago!) but I do still use it occasionally, for example at 15:40 ish in this one: ua-cam.com/video/YTJ8zRykJcs/v-deo.html

I saw your comment on the efficiency of this particular model and you can see it is actin more like a gouge than a plane. Anyway, well done for staying with it to move onto the new and improved Mc2 middle.

I would've liked to have seen the groove after you got it cut.

Trust me, you don't want to see it ;) This is an old video and the tool doesn't work very well, my grooves needed a lot of chisel cleanup until I made an improved version, which you can see in use here if you want: ua-cam.com/video/ZoVSAyFyeDk/v-deo.html

Low tech is good tech. Great little plane. Did you make a tonguing plane as well?
